  • This paper applies the moment method to analyze the transverse electromagnetic(TEM) cell with an inner conductor (septum) of arbitrary rectangular shape and location by employing quast static approximation. The EM field and the characteristic impedance so obtained are shown to be in good agreement with the available data from the previously published papers about the typical TEM cell structure with center septum of zero thickness.

  • Issues in the electrical characterization of semiconducting photoanodes in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell, such as the cell geometry dependence, scan rate dependence in DC measurements, and the frequency dependence in AC measurements, are addressed, using the example of a $TiO_2$ photoanode. Contrary to conventional constant phase element (CPE) modeling, the capacitive behavior associated with Mott-Schottky (MS) response was successfully modeled by a Havriliak-Negami (HN) capacitance function-which allowed the determination of frequency-independent Schottky capacitance parameters to be explained by a trapping mechanism. Additional polarization can be successfully described by the parallel connection of a Bisquert transmission line (TL) model for the diffusion-recombination process in the nanostructured $TiO_2$ electrode. Instead of shunt CPEs generally employed for the non-ideal TL feature, TL models with ideal shunt capacitors can describe the experimental data in the presence of an infinite-length Warburg element as internal interfacial impedance - a characteristic suggested to be a generic feature of many electrochemical cells. Fully parametrized impedance spectra finally allow in-depth physicochemical interpretations.

  • In this paper, we design a non-volatile memory IP, 1-kb one-time programmable (OTP) memory, used for power management ICs. Since a conventional OTP cell uses an isolated NMOS transistor as an antifuse, there is an advantage of it big cell size with the BCD process. We use, therefore, a PMOS transistor as an antifuse in lieu of the isolated NMOS transistor and minimize the cell size by optimizing the size of a OTP cell transistor. And we add an ESD protection circuit to the OTP core circuit to prevent an arbitrary cell from being programmed by a high voltage between the terminals of the PMOS antifuse when the ESD test is done. Furthermore, we propose a method of turning on a PMOS pull-up transistor of high impedance to eliminate a gate coupling noise in reading a non-programmed cell. The layout size of the designed 1-kb PMOS-type antifuse OTP IP with Dongbu's $0.18{\mu}m$ BCD is $129.93{\times}452.26{\mu}m^2$.

  • Hydrogen could be produced from any substance containing hydrogen atoms, such as water, hydrocarbon (HC) fuels, acids or bases. Hydrocarbon fuels couold be converted to hydrogen-rich gas through reforming process for hydrogen production. Even though fuel cell have high efficiency with pure hydrogen from gas tank, it is more beneficial to generate hydrogen from city gas (mainly methane) in residential application such as domestic or office environments. Thus hydrogen is generated by reforming process using hydrocarbon. Unfortunately, the reforming process for hydrogen production is accompanied with unavoidable impurities. Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$, $H_2S$, $NH_3$, and $CH_4$ in hydrogen could cause negative effects on fuel cell performance. Those effects are kinetic losses due to poisoning of electrode catalysts, ohmic losses due to proton conductivity reduction including membrane and catalyst ionomer layers, and mass transport losses due to degrading catalyst layer structure and hydrophobic property. Hydrogen produced from reformer eventually contains around 73% of $H_2$, 20% or less of $CO_2$, 5.8% of less of $N_2$, or 2% less of $CH_4$, and 10ppm or less of CO. Most impurities are removed using pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process to get high purity hydrogen. However, high purity hydrogen production requires high operation cost of reforming process. The effect of carbon dioxide on fuel cell performance was investigated in this experiment. The performance of PEM fuel cell was investigated using current vs. potential experiment, long run (10 hr) test, and electrochemical impedance measurement when the concentrations of carbon dioxide were 10%, 20% and 30%. Also, the concentration of impurity supplied to the fuel cell was verified by gas chromatography (GC).

  • The effects of electrode and matrix in the PAFC were investigated using AC-impedance spectroscopy. The performance of PAFC was determined by changing external electronic load. AC impedance measurement was carried out as functions of phosphoric acid impregnation temperature. operating temperature and matrix coating method using various cathodes ; 20%Pt/C, 20%Pt-Ni/C, 20%Pt-Co-Ni/C, 10%Pt-Fe-Co/C, and 20%Pt-Fe-Co/C From the analysis of measured impedance data, the interfacial resistance decreased with increasing operating temperature. and with decreasing impregnation temperature. As compared with the alloy catalysts, Pt catalyst showed a lower interfacial resistance. This consist with the cell performance.

  • This paper presents a novel topology named a modified capacitor-assisted Z-source inverter (MCA-ZSI) based on the traditional ZSI. The impedance network of the proposed MCA-ZSI consists of two symmetrical cells coupled with two capacitors with an X-shape structure, and each cell has two inductors, two capacitors, and one diode. Compared with other topologies based on switched ZSI with the same number of components used at impedance network, the proposed topology provides higher boost ability, lower voltage stress across inverter switching devices, and lower capacitor voltage stress. The improved performances of the proposed topology are demonstrated in the simulation and experimental results.

  • The anodic reaction of hydrogen/oxygen gas mixture at platinum or palladium electrode interfacing with a solid polymer electrolyte was investigated using AC impedance method. The impedance spectrum of the electrode reactions of the mixture depends on the gas composition, electrode roughness, the mode of electrochemical operation and the cell potential. For electrolysis mode of operation, the spectrum taken for the reaction on a rough platinum electrode for the gas mixture revealed clearly that the local anodic reduction of oxygen gas takes place concurrently with the anodic oxidation of hydrogen gas.

  • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a unique non-destructive technique employed to analyze various devices in different energy storage applications. It characterizes materials and interfaces for their properties in heterogeneous systems employing equivalent circuits as models. So far, it has been used to analyze the performance of various photovoltaic cells, fuel cells, batteries, and other energy storage devices, through equivalent circuit designing. This review highlights the diverse applications of EIS in fuel cells and specific parameters affecting its performance. A particular emphasis has been laid on the challenges faced by this technique and their possible solutions.

  • Direct Carbon Fuel Cell(DCFC) is one of new power generation that the chemical energy of solid carbon can be converted into electrical energy directly. At the high temperature, the electrochemical reaction of the carbon takes place and the carbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide as followed overall reaction ($C+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2$). However, in case of using the raw coals as a fuel of DCFC, the volatile matter containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen produces at operating temperature. In this study, the electrochemical reaction of Adaro coal was compared with Graphite. This work focused on the electrochemical reaction of two kinds of solid carbon by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS). The EIS results were estimated by equivalent circuit analysis. The constant phase element(CPE) was applied in Randle circuit to explain an electrode and fuel interface. The correlation between the fuel characteristic and electrochemical results was discussed by elements of equivalent circuit of each fuel.
