Automatic identification and analysis of multi-object cattle rumination based on computer vision

  • Rumination in cattle is closely related to their health, which makes the automatic monitoring of rumination an important part of smart pasture operations. However, manual monitoring of cattle rumination is laborious and wearable sensors are often harmful to animals. Thus, we propose a computer vision-based method to automatically identify multi-object cattle rumination, and to calculate the rumination time and number of chews for each cow. The heads of the cattle in the video were initially tracked with a multi-object tracking algorithm, which combined the You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm with the kernelized correlation filter (KCF). Images of the head of each cow were saved at a fixed size, and numbered. Then, a rumination recognition algorithm was constructed with parameters obtained using the frame difference method, and rumination time and number of chews were calculated. The rumination recognition algorithm was used to analyze the head image of each cow to automatically detect multi-object cattle rumination. To verify the feasibility of this method, the algorithm was tested on multi-object cattle rumination videos, and the results were compared with the results produced by human observation. The experimental results showed that the average error in rumination time was 5.902% and the average error in the number of chews was 8.126%. The rumination identification and calculation of rumination information only need to be performed by computers automatically with no manual intervention. It could provide a new contactless rumination identification method for multi-cattle, which provided technical support for smart pasture.

  • A national animal health monitoring system(NAHMS) in Gyeongnam area was started from 1997 to develop statistically valid data for use in estimating disease frequencies in dairy cattle, and the associated costs. The objectives of this study were to : (1) discribe what was done to implement and maintain the system in Gyeongnam ; (2) present selected disease frequencies ; (3) discuss the epidemiological consideration of what was done and implications for the results obtained. Veterinary Medical Officers(VMOs-professors and graduate students from Gyeongsang National University, Faculty of Gyeongnam Livestock Promotion Institute, and Clinic veterinarians) served as data collectors. After training on current disease and management problems of dairy cattle, interview techniques, sampling methods, and data collection instruments, the VMOs participated in selection of the sample herds and data gathering. Forty of 167 dairy herds were selected randomly and the VMOs visited farms once a month for 12 months to collect data about management, disease, inventory, production, preventive treatment, financial and any other relevant data. Strict data quality control devices were used. Specific feed-back was developed for the producers and data collectors. Of the three age groups studied, cows had the greatest number of disease problems. The six disorders found most frequently were (from the highest to the lowest) breeding problems, clinical mastitis, birth problems, gastrointestinal problems. metabolic problems, and lameness. In young stock, respiratory, multiple system, breeding problems, and gastrointestinal problems were pre dominant, whereas in calves, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and integumental problems were major.

광주지역 소의 큐열 항체 보유율 조사 (Prevalence of antibody titers for Coxiella burnetii in cattle in Gwangju area, Korea)

  • The antibody titers against Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) among cattle raised in Gwangju area were analyzed from February to October in 2015. The prevalence of antibodies in collected bulk-tank milk from 7 dairy cattle farms was 57.1% and the seroprevalence of 210 dairy cows randomly selected from those farms was 7.1%. By age, the seroprevalence was 3.3% in less than 4 years of age, 9.0% between 4 and 7 years of age, and 28.6% in more than 8 years of age. On the other hand, the seroprevalence of the Hanwoo cattle was 0.4%. The result suggested that the antibodies against Coxiella burnetii increase as the age of the dairy cows increases and therefore, it is necessary to keep monitoring the prevalence of Q fever in Gwangju area.

우분 퇴비공장 주변 농경지 및 수계의 계절별 잔류 항생물질 모니터링 (Seasonal Monitoring of Residual Antibiotics in Soil, Water, and Sediment adjacent to a Cattle Manure Composting Facility)

  • Overuse of veterinary antibiotics threats public health and surrounding environment due to the occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibiotic's concentrations of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) in a tetracycline group (TCs), sulfamethazine (SMT), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and sulfathiazole (STZ) in a sulfonamide group, lasalocid (LSL), monensin (MNS), and salinomycin (SLM) in a ionophore (IPs), and tylosin (TYL) in a macrolide (MLs) group from soil, water, and sediment samples adjacent to a cattle manure composting facility. For all samples of soil, water, and sediment, the highest concentrations were detected in TCs among the tested antibiotics because of its higher annual consumption in veterinary farms, Korea and its higher cohesiveness with divalent or trivalent cations in soil. Moreover, the concentrations of residual antibiotics in September were generally higher than in June because of heavier rainfall in June. We suggest that continual monitoring and developing guideline of antibiotics are needed to control residual antibiotics in the environment.

대구지역 도축장 출하가축의 도체에서 분리한 Staphylococcus aureus의 항생제 내성과 MRSA 검출에 관한 연구 (Study on antimicrobial resistance and detection of MRSA of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from carcass in Daegu slaughterhouses)

  • At the present study, it was aimed to explore the states of antimicrobial resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from 1,360 chickens, pigs and cattle carcass (400 chickens, 480 pigs and 480 cattle) in Daegu province from January 2022 to December 2022. Among 1,360 samples, 81 of S. aureus were isolated cattle (1.4%), pigs (7.7%) and chickens (9.2%). In antimicrobial susceptibility test, all of the isolates were demonstrated susceptibility to rifampin. But the isolates were showed resistance other antibiotics in order of tetracycline (62.9%), ciprofloxacin (62.9%), tobramycin (58.0%), gentamicin (51.8%), amikacin (40.7%), penicillin (39.5%), clindamycin (35.8%), enrofloxacin (33.3%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (30.8%), oxacillin (30.8%), minocycline (29.6%), erythromycin (25.9%), quinupristin/dalfopristin (20.9%), chloramphenicol (12.3%), cefoxitin (9.8%). Among the 81 S. aureus isolates, 25 (30.8%) methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were observed. Seven (28.0%) of 25 MRSA harbored mecA gene. About 96% of MRSA were multidrug resistance to at least 3 more drugs. A continuous monitoring and surveillance program to prevent antimicrobial resistance in livestock products is demanded.

바이오 및 환경센서를 활용한 무선센서 네트워크 기반의 축사관리 시스템 (Cattle Shed Management System Based on Wireless Sensor Network with Bio and Environmental Sensors)

  • 다양한 IT융합기술 분야 중 바이오 및 환경센서를 활용한 농축산 산업분야에 관한 연구가 최근 주목받고 있다. 그중 축산산업의 질적 향상을 위한 방법으로 IT기술융합이 절실히 요구되고 있다. 특히, 축산물에 대한 실시간 건강산태 모니터링, 질병발생시 원인 파악 및 즉각적인 향후 대처방안 수립 등이 이에 해당된다. 이에 본 논문에서는 무선 센서 네트워크 기반에서의 축산산업 분야에서 축사 환경 모니터링 및 환경개선 시스템을 제안한다. 제안된 시스템은 축사의 무선 환경정보 수집 노드, 환경개선 노드, 축사 게이트웨이, 서버로 구성되어 대규모 축산산업 환경 모니터링과 환경개선이 가능하여 상황에 따른 능동적인 대응 및 가축의 최적 생활 요건과 질병발생시 환경에 따른 정보의 실시간 수집 및 최적 환경제어가 가능하다. 제안된 시스템을 활용하면, 집단 폐사와 같은 재해에 실시간 대응 및 가축관리의 최적 생활요건을 제공함으로써 축산 산업분야의 IT 융합기술의 성공적인 적용이 가능하다고 판단된다.

  • 구제역 등과 같은 질병은 전염력이 강해서 국가적으로 큰 피해를 유발하고 있는데, 이러한 질병을 조기에 감지하는 것이 중요하지만, 실제 현장에서는 체온상승 등 외관상의 증상을 통하여 감염을 인지하고 있으나, 초기에는 수의사들의 이동으로 인하여 병이 전염되는 사례도 있어 가축의 체온을 측정하여 이상유무를 조기에 발견하고 이를 원격으로 수의사와 연결하여 빠른 판단을 하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 유비쿼터스 ICT기술을 접목하여 IR센서를 이용한 한우의 체온을 측정할 수 있는 모듈을 개발하고 이를 기반으로 수의사와 농장주간에 원격진료시스템을 개발하여 한우의 건강관리를 할 수 있도록 하며, 유비쿼터스 ICT기술과 축산업의 융합을 통해 가축과 농장단위, 지역 및 국가단위의 관리를 효율적으로 할 수 있으며, 상대적으로 우수한 우리나라의 IT기술을 축산업에 성공적으로 접목할 경우 현재 우리나라 축산업의 지속가능성을 높이고, 세계 시장에서 기술 주도권을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대할 수 있다.

서울지역의 도축 소, 돼지 지육에서의 잔류물질 비교 조사 (Comparison of antibiotic residues on beef and pork carcass in Seoul)

  • This study was carried out to compare the antibiotic residues in the muscles of cattle and pigs from slaughter-houses in Seoul from 2000 to 2002 by EEC-4-plate, Charm II and HPLC methods. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Residual materials were detected from 41 samples(0.6%) by EEC-4-plate method from random sampling and 38 samples(12%) by Charm II method from directed sampling. 2. Violation rates were 0.3% by monitoring and 4.7% by surveillance program. 3. The 35 samples were classified as tetracyclines 30(86%), sulfonamides 4(11%), ${\beta}$-lactams 1(3%) and two samples simultaneously determined oxyteracycline plus sulfadimetoxine, and sulfamerazine plus sulfadimetoxine. 4. The highest residual concentration(ppm) of chlortetracycline, oxytetracyline, sulfamethazine, sufadimetoxine and penicillin were 0.5, 12.0, 6.4, 2.6 and 0.44, respectively.

목부착형 센서를 이용한 기계학습 기반 소 심부체온 예측방안 (Estimation of Body Core Temperature of Cow using Neck Sensor based on Machine Learning)

  • 체온은 가축의 건강상태와 직접적으로 연관되어있어서 건강에 문제가 발생하였을 때 체온이 즉각 변화한다. 따라서 정확한 체온 측정은 스마트 축사 관리에서 중요하다. 하지만 현재 가축의 체온을 측정하기 위해서 주로 사용되는 표피 부착형 센서의 경우 외기 및 센서의 부착상태에 따라 측정되는 체온 값이 크게 변화하고, 측정되는 체온이 가축의 실제 심부체온과 다른 경우가 많다. 본 연구에서는 목 부착형 센서를 이용하여 소의 심부체온을 예측하는 방안을 개발하였다. 특히 심부체온을 정확하게 예측하는 회귀방안과 특정온도 이상으로 체온이 올라가는 것을 감지하는 분류방안을 다양한 기계학습방안을 이용하여 개발하였다. 이를 통해 높은 정확도로 소의 심부체온 이상여부를 예측할 수 있음을 보였다. 제안 방안을 통해서 소의 건강상태를 정확하게 파악하고 축사관리의 효율성을 향상시킬 수 있다.

전남지역 도축돈에서 분리된 Salmonella typhimurium의 병원성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the pathogenicity of Salmonella typhimurium isolated from slaughtered pigs in Chonnam area)

  • Non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars remain a potential threat to human health and many animals including beef cattle, broiler chickens, and pigs which possible sources of non-typhoidal salmonellosis in human. In this study, the cecal contents of slaughtered pigs were examined for Salmonella serovar prevalence. The characteristics of the isolates, including antimicrobial resistance patterns and virulence genes, were studied along with the reference strain S typhimurium ATCC 13311. Out of 640 sample, 137 Salmonella(21.4%) were isolated and their serovar were identified S typhimurium 83 strains(60.6%), S agona 10 strains(7.3%), S schwarzengrund 4 strains(2.9%), S derby 4 strains(2.9%), S ayinde 1 strains(0.7%), and untypable 35 strains(25.5%). All 83 S typhimurium strains(100%) were multi-drug resistance to at least 7 antibiotics, and 20 strains(24.1%) of 83 isolates were R-type ACSSuT. Examination of virulent gene by PCR revealed that 73 S typimurium field isolates(88%) have a invA gene and 24 strains(28.9%) have a spvC gene. Consequently, S typhimurium infection in slaughtered pigs was relatively to appear high prevalence in their herds which suggested that it should be necessary for herd health monitoring and surveillance.
