  • Catalytic combustion is one of the suitable methods which is applicable to micro heat source due to high energy density and no flame quenching. And hydrogen can be oxidized at room temperature with platinum catalyst. So hydrogen-fueled micro catalytic combustor with platinum catalyst can be good and easy-handling heat source for another micro devices. In this work we focused on general catalytic combustion characteristics of hydrogen-air premixed gas in 10mm scale catalytic combustor for the further application to micro scale. Platinum was coated on dense ceramic monolith which can be installed in simple-structured catalytic combustor. We investigated the effect of flow rate, heat loss and platinum percentage in catalyst-coated monolith on catalytic combustion performance by temperature distribution in the combustor. By those results we confirmed catalytic reactivity and estimated reaction area. And we simulated micro scale catalytic reaction by sliced monolith. The results of this work will be important design factors for micro scale catalytic combustor.

  • Numerical simulations of high temperature catalytic combustion have been performed for the application to a gas turbine combustor. Dependences of inlet temperature and pressure on the distributions of temperature and species concentrations were investigated using plug flow model with detailed homogeneous and heterogeneous chemistries of methane-air mixtures. Honeycomb typecombustor deposited with Pt catalyst of 100mm in length and 26mm in diameter is used. The results show that rapid increase of temperature profile occurs earlier with the increase of inlet temperature and the decrease of inlet pressure. The condition which catalytic combustion is stabilized exists at certain range of inlet temperature and pressure. The state of catalytic combustion is also confirmed by the distributions of species concentration.

  • THEMATICS is a simple computational method for predicting functional sites in proteins. The method computes the theoretical titration curves of the ionizable residues of a protein using its 3D structure, determines the residues with perturbed, non-Henderson-Hasselbalch titration behavior, and identifies clusters of these perturbed residues in physical proximity. We have shown previously that this method is highly successful in predicting catalytic sites in enzymes. In the present study, we apply the method to non-catalytic ligand-binding proteins. It is shown that THEMATICS can predict non-catalytic binding sites. The success rate is better than 80 % for a set of 30 non-catalytic, ligand-binding proteins. The application of the method to Glutamine-binding protein from E. coli is discussed in detail.

  • Chemical reactions have an intricate relationship with the search for better-quality neighborhood solutions to optimization problems. A catalytic reaction for chemical reactions provides a clue and a framework to solve complicated optimization problems. The application of a catalytic reaction reveals new information hidden in the optimization problem and provides a non-intuitive perspective. This paper proposes a new simulated catalytic reaction method for search in optimization problems. In the experiments using this method, significantly improved results are obtained in almost all graphs tested by applying to a graph bisection problem, which is a representative problem of combinatorial optimization problems.

  • This paper provides a general overview of surface catalytic recombination in hypersonic flow. The surface catalytic recombination phenomena is elaborated in terms of its general overview and numerical modeling associated with it. The general overview of the surface catalytic recombination phenomena describes the elementary surface reactions for the surface catalytic and the role of the surface catalytic recombination efficiency in the heat transfer determination. In the numerical modeling, the surface catalytic recombination is described based on the stagnation-point boundary layer analysis, and finite-rate surface reaction modeling. Throughout this overview manuscript, a general understanding of this phenomena is obtained and can be used as foundation for deeper application with the numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow solver to estimate the surface heat transfer in the hypersonic vehicles.

  • This research represents the catalytic converter for application in the motorcycle. Present research model type is a monolithic catalytic converter and this type has been widely used for satisfaction on and the regulations of pollutant emissions in automobiles. The experiment range is found for light-off temperature time of the catalyst converter. And we has to experiment for effective area of catalytic monolith. The experimental result indicated an increase effective area in the catalytic monolith. Specialty, it was found from the result that the more positive effect from result of thermal image camera in the megaphone model. The rate of effective area for base model was about 8.97% and megaphone model was 41.52%, 34.60%, 33.43%, 25.43% and 17.82% on the diffuser angle $4^{\circ}$ to $8^{\circ}$. Comparing with base type, megaphone type has more suitable for application to motorcycle.

  • Flameless fiber mat catalytic burners have been known as an effective heat source in industrial drying processes since heat obtained from combustion can be transferred to absorptive body by far-infrared radiation. In order to extend the application of fiber mat catalytic burner, novel fiber mat catalytic burners were manufactured and combustion characteristics of them were investigated. For diffusive catalytic burners, the efficiency of combustion was significantly affected by the installation direction and the temperature of catalytic bed perimeter influenced on the diffusion rate of oxygen which determined the combustion efficiency of catalytic burner. It was seen in premixed catalytic combustion that air content in premixed fuel gas was optimized at slightly higher than theoretical amount of air. Combustion heat released higher than 70% by radiant heat in premixed catalytic combustion likewise diffusive catalytic combustion.
