  • Recently, fine dust in atmosphere have been considerably issued as a harmful element for human. Nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) exhausted from diesel engines and power plants has been disclosed as a main source of secondary production of fine dust. In order to prevent exhausting these nitrogenous compounds into atmosphere, a treatment system with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst with ammonia as a reductant has been used in various industries. Urea solution has been widely studied to supply ammonia into a SCR catalytic reactor, safely. However, the conversion of urea solution to ammonia has several challenges, especially on a slow conversion velocity. In the present study, a fast urea conversion system including a plasma burner was suggested and designed to evaluate the performances of urea conversion and initial operation time. A designed lab-scale facility has a plasma burner, urea nozzle, mixer, and SCR catalyst which is for hydrolysis of isocyane. Flow rate of methane that is a fuel of the plasma burner was varied to control temperatures in the urea conversion facility. From experimental results, it is found that urea can be converted into ammonia using high temperature condition of above $400^{\circ}C$. In the designed test facility, it is found that ammonia can be produced within 1 min from urea injection and the result shows prospect commercialization of proposed technology in the SCR facilities.

  • The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of $MnO_x$ with $NH_3$ is an effective method for the removal of $MnO_x$ from stationary system. The typical catalyst for this method is $V_2O_5-WO_3(MoO_3)/TiO_2$, caused by the high activity and stability. However, This catalyst is active within $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and occurs the pore plugging from the deposition of ammonium sulfate salts on the catalysts surface. It needs to locate the SCR unit after the desulfurizer and electrostatic precipitator without reheating of the flue gas as well as deposition of dust on the catalyst. The manganese oxides supported on titania catalysts have attracted interest because of its high SCR activity at low temperature. The catalytic activity of $MnO_x/TiO_2$ SCR catalyst with different manganese precursors have investigated for low-temperature SCR in terms of structural, morphological, and physico-chemical analyses. The $MnO_x/TiO_2$ were prepared from three different precursors such as manganese nitrate, manganese acetate (II), and manganese acetate (III) by the sol-gel method and then it calcinated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. The structural analysis was carried out to identify the phase transition and the change intensity of catalytic activity by various manganese precursors was analyzed by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. These different precursors also led to various surface Mn concentrations indicated by SEM. The Mn acetate (III) tends to be more suppressive the crystalline phase (rutile), and it has not only smaller particle size, but also better distributed than the others. It was confirmed that the catalytic activity of MA (III)-$MnO_x/TiO_2$ was the highest among them.

  • In this study, we report on the catalyst process installed in conjunction with a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator to remove the oil mist and fine dust emitted from large-size grill restaurants. The multi-stage catalyst module reduced odor through catalytic reaction of acetaldehyde on catalysts even at an ambient temperature with ozone as an oxidant readily produced in a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator. Two types of manganese-based catalysts, $Mn_2O_3$ and $CuMnO_x$ were fabricated by extrusion molding for structured catalysts in practical applications, and the optimum conditions for high removal efficiencies of acetaldehyde and ozone were determined. When two optimized catalysts were applied in a two-stage catalyst module, the removal efficiency of acetaldehyde and ozone were ${\geq}85%$ and 100% respectively at the space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and the reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$.

  • A series of fabric filters including P-84, Nomex and PTFE were coated with a commercial $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst as an effort to develop a functional fabric filter of simultaneous removal of dust and NOx. The coating methods employed are sol-gel coating method, spray coating method and dip coating method, and the effects of coating method on NOx removal performance of functional fabric filter were investigated. Experimental conditions are as follows: the temperatures of $100-250^{\circ}C$ which are the normal operating temperature range of fabric filters, the space velocity of $5,000hr^{-1}$, the oxygen concentration of 6%, and the $NH_3/NO$ ratio of 1.0. Results showed that the sol-gel coating method gave the best NOx removal performance mainly due to its ability in controlling the amount of catalyst and uniform coating.

  • In this study, an experiment and a reaction characteristic study were conducted to enhance the reaction activity of V2O5/WO3/TiO2 at 300 ℃ or less by adding selenium to the support, in a selective catalytic reduction method using ammonia as a reducing agent to remove nitrogen oxides. Se-TiO2 and TiO2 were synthesized using the sol-gel method, and used as a support when preparing V2O5/WO3/TiO2 and V2O5/WO3/Se-TiO2 catalysts. The reaction activity of our catalyst was compared with that of a commercial catalyst. The denitration efficiency of the catalyst using TiO2 prepared by the sol-gel method was lower than that of the catalyst prepared using commercial TiO2, but was improved by the addition of selenium. Thus, the effect of selenium addition on the catalyst structure was analyzed using BET, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, and FT-IR measurements and the effect of the increase in specific surface area by selenium addition and the formation of monomer and complex vanadium species on reaction characteristics were confirmed.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the leaching characteristics of unregulated heavy metals such as Ni, Zn, Ba, Be, Sb, Se, V in specified waste. 108 waste samples which were taken from the representative facilities emitting hazardous substances, were analyzed. The rate of leaching of heavy metal was measured using an official test method. From the results, wastewater treatment sludge and dust contained much Ni, and Zn was detected in all samples. Dust and waste catalyst producted from petroleum-refining process tended to reveal V in high concentration. Ba, Be, Sb, Se showed low concentration, but require additional analyses of waste generated at different industries.

  • In this study, the porous ceramic filter was developed to be able to remove both dust and hazardous gas contained in fuel gas at high temperature. The porous ceramic filters were fabricated and used as a catalyst support. And the effects have been investigated such as the mean particle size, organic content and addition of foaming agent on the porosity, compressive strength and pressure drop of ceramic filters. With the increase of mean powder size and the organic content for the cordierite filter, the porosity was increased, but the compressive strength and pressure drop were decreased. From the results of the research, the optimum condition for the fabrication of ceramic filters could be acquired and they had the porosity of 58%, the compressive strength of 13.4 MPa and the pressure drop of 250 Pa. It was expected that this ceramic filter was able to be applied to the glass melting furnace, combustor, and dust/toxic gas removal filter.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this case study is to assess the current airflow and find the ideal ventilation conditions in tank reactors for minimizing the possibility of exposure respiratory dusts(size of $2.5{\mu}m$, $10{\mu}m$) when workers exchange catalysts in the tank reactors. Methods: A Numerical study was performed to determine ideal ventilation conditions, We considered two sizes of airborne respiratory particles($2.5{\mu}m$, $10{\mu}m$) at 12points from the bottom of tank reactor. We changed input & output ventilation conditions and analyzed the particle motion in the tank reactor. The star-ccm+, computational fluid dynamics tool was used to predict air & particle flow patterns in the tank reactor and a numerical simulation was achieved by applying the realized ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the Lagrangian particle tracking method. Results: From the results, the increase of recirculation air had a significant impact on removing dusts because they are removed by HEPA filter. To the contrary, Increasing the clean air quantity or changing the input position of clean air is not good for workers because it causes the exit of respiratory dusts through workers' entrance or cause it to remail suspended in the air in the workplace tank.

  • A study using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) was conducted in conjunction with ammonia as a reducing agent for controlling nitrogen oxides, a typical secondary inducer of fine dust in the atmosphere. For NH3-SCR experiments, a commercial catalyst of V/W/TiO2 only and also V/W-Sb/TiO2 catalyst with Sb were used, and phosphorous durability was confirmed. As a result of NH3-SCR experiments, it was confirmed that the addition of Sb to V/W/TiO2 had durability against phosphorous. In addition, the physical and chemical properties were comparatively analyzed through BET, XPS, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, and FT-IR analysis. From the anaylsis results, when Sb was added to V/W/TiO2 catalyst, P was also added resulting in the formation of SbPO4 and the generation of VOPO4 was suppressed. The phosphorous durability was confirmed by maintaining the redox characteristics of the catalyst before P was added.

  • For the design of selective catalytic reactors of NOx by $NH_3$, engineering approach can be performed to determine the reactor shape, mixing device and $NH_3$ injection system. This study shows the optimization of guide vanes to improve the flow pattern near the catalyst layer of SCR in a untility boiler. By varying their spacings and shapes, flow performance of guide vanes was analyzed to achieve an uniform velocity distribution which increases the NOx convesion efficiency, and a flow direction normal to the layer which minimises the erosion by the dust in the flue gas. Including these results, experimental and numerical studies for the SCR design were discussed.
