We present the Korea Institute for Advanced Study Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (KIAS VAGC), a catalog of galaxies based on the Large Scale Structure (LSS) sample of New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (NYU VAGC) Data Release 7. Our catalog supplements redshifts of 10,497 galaxies with 10 < $r_P\;{\leq}\;17.6$ (1455 with 10 < $r_P\;{\leq}\;14.5$) to the NYU VAGC LSS sample. Redshifts from various existing catalogs such as the Updated Zwicky Catalog, the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey, the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, and the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey have been put into the NYU VAGC photometric catalog. Our supplementation significantly improves spectroscopic completeness: the area covered by the spectroscopic sample with completeness higher than 95% increases from 2.119 to 1.737 sr. Our catalog also provides morphological types of all galaxies that are determined by the automated morphology classification scheme of Park & Choi (2005), and related parameters, together with fundamental photometry parameters supplied by the NYU VAGC. Our catalog contains matches to objects in the Max Planck for Astronomy (MPA) & Johns Hopkins University (JHU) spectrum measurements (Data Release 7). This new catalog, the KIAS VAGC, is complementary to the NYU VAGC and MPA-JHU catalog.

Galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the universe located at the top of the cosmological hierarchical model, so the evolution of the universe can be understood by studying clusters of galaxies. Therefore, finding a larger number of galaxy clusters plays an important role in exploring how the universe evolves. A large number of catalogs for galaxy clusters in the northern sky have been published; however, there are few catalogs in the southern sky due to the lack of wide sky survey data. KMTNet Synoptic Survey of Southern Sky(KS4) project, which observes a wide area of the southern sky about 7000 deg2 with KMTNet telescopes for two years, is in progress under the SNU Astronomy Research Center. We use the KS4 multi-wavelength optical data and measure photometric redshifts of galaxies for finding galaxy clusters at redshift z<1. Currently, the KS4 project has observed approximately 33% of the target region, and a pipeline that measures photometric redshifts of galaxies has been created. When the project is completed, we expect to find more than a hundred thousand galaxy clusters, and this will improve the study of galaxy clusters in the southern sky.

Cosmology is a study to understand the origin, fundamental property, and evolution of the universe. Nowadays, many observational data of galaxies have become available, and one needs large-volume numerical simulations with good quality of the spatial distribution for a fair comparison with observation data. On the other hand, since galaxies' evolution is affected by both gravitational and baryonic effects, it is nontrivial to populate galaxies only by N-body simulations. However, full hydrodynamic simulations with large volume are computationally costly. Therefore, alternative galaxy assignment methods to N-body simulations are necessary for successful cosmological studies. In this talk, I would like to introduce the MBP-galaxy abundance matching. This novel galaxy assignment method agrees with the spatial distribution of observed galaxies between 0.1Mpc ~ 100Mpc scales. I also would like to introduce mock galaxy catalogs of the Horizon Run 4 and Multiverse simulations, large-volume cosmological N-body simulations done by the Korean community. Finally, I would like to introduce some recent works with those mock galaxies used to understand our universe better.

The galaxy cluster is an important object for investigating the large scale structure and evolution of galaxies. Recent wide and deep near-IR surveys provide an opportunity to search for galaxy clusters in the high redshift universe. We have identified candidate clusters of 0.8< z <1.2 from the $25deg^2$ SA22 field using an optical-near-IR dataset from merged UKIDSS DXS, IMS and CFHTLS catalogs. Using these candidates, we investigate the star forming activity of member galaxies. Consequently, at z ~1, the star forming activity of cluster galaxies is not distinguishable from those of field galaxies, which is different from members in local clusters. This means the environmental effect becomes more important for $M_{\ast}>10^{10}M_{\odot}$ galaxies at z <1.
Radial color gradient of disk galaxies has been a key tool for diagnosing the ages and metallicities of the stars and gas of these galaxies, and thus, the formation process of these disks. In many cases, observational data support the 'inside-out' picture of disk galaxy formation proposed by Larson (1976). In this scenario, gas within dark matter halos cools and accretes on to the outer disk while enhancing star formation in the disk. Recent discoveries of "extended ultra-viloet" (XUV) disks also show that majority of disk galaxy experience active star formation within out disks where gas surface density is quite low (Thilker et al. 2007; Gil de Paz et al. 2007). However, neither gas, nor stars stay put within galaxies. They rather migrate into bulges, disperse throughout galaxies, or flow into and out of galaxies via various mechanisms. There have been a few notable studies to investigate how radial star formation and metal abundance gradients vary across populations of disk galaxies systematically. However, the mechanisms driving gas transport are still poorly understood. Cross-matching various galaxy catalogs including KVAGC and UKIDSS, we are investigating if color gradients of late-type galaxies depend on their physical properties, especially on environmental properties. We will present the result from the pilot study on Karachentsev isolated galaxy catalog.
Using a method to correct redshift space distortion (RSD) for individual galaxies, we mapped the real space distributions of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7(DR7). We use an ensemble of mock catalogs to demonstrate the reliability of this extension, showing that it allows for an accurate recovery of the real-space correlation functions and galaxy biases. We also demonstrate that, using an iterative method applied to intermediate scale clustering data, we can obtain an unbiased estimate of the growth rate of structure $f\sigma_8$, which is related to the clustering amplitude of matter, to an accuracy of $\sim 10\%$. Applying this method to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7), we construct a real-space galaxy catalog spanning the redshift range $0.01 \leq z \leq 0.2$, which contains 584,473 galaxies in the North Galactic Cap (NGC). Using this data we, infer $0.376 \pm 0.038$ at a median redshift z=0.1, which is consistent with the WMAP9 cosmology at $1\sigma$ level. By combining this measurement with the real-space clustering of galaxies and with galaxy-galaxy weak lensing measurements for the same sets of galaxies, we are able to break the degeneracy between $f$, $\sigma_8$ and $b$. From the SDSS DR7 data alone, we obtain the following cosmological constraints at redshift $z=0.1$ for galaxies.
We present a preliminary result of the Fornax cluster survey as a part of the KMTNet Intensive Nearby Southern Galaxy Group Survey (KINGS). We discovered about 200 new dwarf galaxy candidates from the survey of the $8^{\circ}{\times}6^{\circ}$ area around the Fornax cluster. They have magnitudes ranging from V=17.5 to 22 mag (Mv = -13.8 to -9.3), and they are almost complete to V = 20 mag. Surface brightness profiles of most of these galaxies are fit well by a Sersic law with n ~ 1.0. Structural parameters of these galaxies follow well the scaling relations of dwarf galaxies in the fundamental plane. The color-magnitude diagram of these galaxies shows that they are mostly located at the faint end of the red sequence, indicating that they are the probable member of the Fornax cluster. We also derive a luminosity function of the Fornax cluster by combining the new galaxies with the known galaxies in the previous catalogs. We will discuss the future of the KINGS-Fornax.
We present the properties of galaxies in filaments around the Virgo cluster with respect to their vertical distance from the filament spine. Using the NASA-Sloan Atlas and group catalogs, we select galaxies that do not belong to groups in filaments. The filament member galaxies are then defined as those located within 3.5 scale length from the filament spine. The filaments are mainly (~86%) composed of low-mass dwarf galaxies of logh2M∗/M⊙ < 9 dominantly located on the blue cloud in color-magnitude diagrams. We observe that the g - r color and stellar mass of galaxies correlate with their vertical distance from the filament spine in which the color becomes red and stellar mass decreases with increasing vertical filament distance. The galaxies were divided into two subsamples in different stellar mass ranges, with lower-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ ≤ 8) galaxies showing a clear negative g-r color gradient, whereas higher-mass (logh2M∗/M⊙ > 8) galaxies have a flat distribution against the vertical filament distance. We observe a negative EW(Hα) gradient for higher-mass galaxies, whereas lower-mass galaxies show no distinct variation in EW(Hα) against the vertical filament distance. In contrast, the NUV - r color distribution of higher-mass galaxies shows no strong dependence on the vertical filament distance, whereas the lower-mass galaxies show a distinct negative NUV - r color gradient. We do not witness clear gradients of HI fraction in either the higher- or lower-mass subsamples. We propose that the negative color and stellar mass gradients of galaxies can be explained by mass assembly from past galaxy mergers at different vertical filament distances. In addition, galaxy interactions might be responsible for the contrasting features of EW(Hα) and NUV - r color distributions between the higher- and lower-mass subsamples. The HI fraction distributions of the two subsamples suggest that ram-pressure stripping and gas accretion could be ignorable processes in the Virgo filaments.

We conducted an extremely wide field survey of z ${\~}$ 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) to precisely derive their bright end surface density overcoming the bias due to cosmic variance. We selected out LBG candidates in the Subaru/ XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field (SXDS) over the total of ${\~}1.0\;deg^2$ sky area down to $z_{AB} = 26.0 ({\ge}3{\sigma},\;2'.0 aperture)$ using i' - z' > 1.5 color cut. This sample alone is likely to be contaminated by M/L/T dwarfs, low-z elliptical galaxies, and z ${\~}$ 6 quasars. To eliminate these interlopers, we estimated their numbers using an exponential disk star count model, catalogs of old ellipticals in the SXDS and other field, and a z${\~}$6 quasar luminosity function. The finally derived surface density of z ${\~}$ 6 LBGs was 165 $mag^{-1}\;deg^{-2}$ down to $z_{AB}$ = 26.0 and shows good agreement with previous results from the narrower field survey of HST GOODS.
