  • In order to improve dendritic formation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B phase in the strip-cast Nd-Fe-B alloys that are frequently used for production of high energy sintered magnets, effect of small substitutional additives such as Cu (0.3~1.0 at. %) and Co (0.5~1.5 at.%) on the phase formation and microstructures of the strip-cast alloys based on Nd$\_$14/Fe$\_$80/B$\_$6/ were investigated. As the amount of Cu addition increased, formation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B dendrites along the direction normal to the strip surface was suppressed with the reduction of the strip thickness mainly due to the increase of fluidity of the melt. However, both the dendrites and their <001> preferred orientation along the direction normal to the strip surface were improved with the increase of the strip thickness as the amount of Co addition increased. The dendrites became finer after small amount of Cu or Co was added. While small copper additions tended to stabilize the formation of primary Fe, small cobalt additions suppressed it. When small amount of Zr was added, however, the dendrite structures were totally collapsed with excessive grain growth of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B.

  • In this study, to improve the interfacial bond strength of cast iron-aluminum dissimilar materials, graphite was removed to a certain depth from the cast iron surface through de-graphitization heat treatment. As the heat treatment time increased, the depth at which graphite was removed increased, showing a linear relationship between the heat treatment time and depth. Aluminum was filled to a certain depth on the de-graphitized cast iron surface through die-casting method, and no intermetallic compounds were formed on the cast iron-aluminum interface. The interfacial bonding strength showed a value of 90 MPa regardless of the heat treatment time, which is very high compared to the 12MPa bonding strength of the material without de-graphitization heat treatment. This result is thought to be due to the mechanical bonding of the undercut structure as the liquid aluminum, penetrated by the high pressure die-casting process, solidified in the de-graphitized region of the cast iron.

  • This study was begun to search effect of contact angles of elastic rubber impression materials on the surface of working cast. Of elastic rubber impression materials with a Type III consistency, such as polysulfide, polyether and addition silicone, we selected one and then measured the contact angle after dripping a distilled water 3.3ml. Then, after pouring a dental anhydrite in three types of impression materials, we prepared a working cast and then examined its surface. Contact angle was measured using a full automatic contact angle measuring system (DM-700, KYOWA, Japan), and the surface of working cast was observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (JSM-6700F, JEOL Ltd., JAPAN). The following results were obtained: 1) $Mean{\pm}SD$ (SD: standard deviation) of the initial contact angles were $91.3{\pm}20.5^{\circ}$ in the addition silicone materials, $90.0{\pm}2.2^{\circ}$ in the polyethers and $101.5{\pm}2.3^{\circ}$ in the polysulfides. These results indicate that mean values were similar but standard deviations of the three materials showed a great discrepancy. 2) As the time elapsed, addition silicone materials were found to have a contact angle decreased abruptly as compared with the remaining two types. That is, the initial contact angle was $91.3^{\circ}$ and it was abruptly decreased to $29.4^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. 3) In the polyethers, the initial contact angle was $101.5^{\circ}$ and it was decreased to $90.7^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. In the polysulfides, however, the initial contact angle was $90.0^{\circ}$ and it was $84.2^{\circ}$ after 25 seconds. This showed almost no changes in the initial contact angles. Moreover, its magnitude was greater than that seen in additional silicones. 4) There were significant differences in the contact angles between the three types of elastic rubber impression materials as the time elapsed (p<0.001). On an observation on the surface of working cast, addition silicone materials were found to have the most dense surface. This was followed by polysulfides and polyethers in a descending order.

  • In this paper, a tie-plate shape is optimized by using the numerical technique to reduce the stray load loss of the tie-plate which is a mechanical structure for assembling and supporting of the transformer core. The eddy current loss of the structure is calculated by an electromagnetic field FEM program and the results are compared with 4 different shapes of tie-plates. Since the thickness of the tie-plate is very thin, and the skin depth is very small, the number of FE elements for 3-D transformer model is too big to solve. So, the surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is used to reduce the system matrix size and its computing time. To verify the method a 2.5 MVA 22,900/380V distribution transformer is simulated using one objective function and three design variables with some constraints. The final optimized tie-plate has three slots of 6 mm width and 23 mm gap, and the loss is reduced by 75 %. Consequently, the proposed algorithm seems to be considerably applicable to electric machinery as well as power transformer.

  • This paper is studied to know wear mechanism in variation of austempering temperature and holding time of austempered ductile cast iron against mating material SM45C hardened by heat treatment. The wear tests were carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in dry sliding friction. The wear mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the retained austenite volume fraction was investigated by X-ray diffractometer. The experimental results show that the wear characteristics depend largely on the oxidation of the testing materials which is influenced by the sliding velocity and distance. The retained austenite has a negative effect during frictional contact because it has increased severe wear by softened surface layer. It is shown experimentally that hard metals have lower frictional resistance and hence the resistance to adhesion is increased due to stronger interatomic linking bonds and increase in the surface energy.

  • It has been a major concern in the foundry that steel castings manufactured by the evaporative pattern casting process encounter the carbon pick-up problem. A carbon rich layer at the evaporative pattern cast surface is a result of interactions between the gaseous products from foamed polystyrene and the molten metal. The carburized layer with a high hardness makes it difficult to machine the casting. In this study, the influence of the density of EPS pattern and coatings on carbon pick-up phenomena of S25C and S45C commercial carbon cast steel were investigated. As the density of EPS pattern is increased, the carbon concentration of decomposed pattern is increased and the thickness of carburized layer at the surface of steel castings is increased. Also as the density of coatings is increased, the permeability of coatings is decreased and the thickness of carburized layer at the surface of steel castings is increased. S25C steel which has lower original carbon content compared to S45C steel exhibited severe carburization.

  • Magnesium alloys of AZ31, AZ31 + (0.5, 1, 1.5)wt.% CaO were cast, hot rolled, and oxidized between 450 and $650^{\circ}C$ in atmospheric air. The added CaO enabled to cast the AZ31 alloy in air. It decomposed and precipitated along the grain boundaries of the AZ31 alloy as $Al_2Ca$. The more the amount of CaO was, the more $Al_2Ca$ formed. The oxidation limit was about $450^{\circ}C$ for the AZ31 alloy. But, It increased to $650^{\circ}C$ in the CaO-added alloys. Hot rolling destroyed the precipitates that formed along the grain boundaries of the AZ31 alloy. During oxidation, MgO oxide scales that incorporated CaO formed at the outer surface of the formed oxide layer.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of surface modifications on the bonding characteristics and cytotoxicity of specific titanium porcelain bonded to milling titanium and cast titanium. Milling titanium and cast titanium samples were divided into 8 test groups. These groups are as follow: i) sandblasted with particles of different size of $220{\mu}m\;and\;50{\mu}m$, ii) different sequences of sandblasting treatment and etching treatment, iii) etched with different etching solutions, and iv) preheated or not. The surface characteristics of specimens were characterized by the test of mean roughness of surface and SEM. The bond strength of titanium-ceramic systems was measured by using three-point bending test and SEM. The results show that the mean roughness of surface of sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide increased and bond strength were higher than sample sandblasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. The mean roughness of surface decreased, but the bond strength increased when the samples sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide were preheated. The sample sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide after oxidized with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF) showed higher bond strength than sample oxidized with 30% $HNO_3$ after sandblasted with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Group NaCuNF220SP (milling Ti: 35.3985 MPa, casting Ti: 37.2306 MPa) which was treated with occupational corrosive agent I (50% NaOH, 10% $CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$) and II (35% $HNO_3$, 5% HF), followed by sandblasting with $220{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and preheating at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the highest bond strength and significant differences (P<0.05). The method for modifying surface of titanium showed excellent stability of cells.

  • Cr-Si based alloys are not only excellent in corrosion resistance at high temperatures, but also have good wear resistance due to the formation of Cr3Si phase, therefore they are promising as metallic coating materials. Aluminum is often added to Cr-Si alloys to improve the oxidation resistance through which stable alumina surface film is formed. On the other hand, due to the addition of aluminum, various Al-containing phases may be formed and may negatively affect the heat resistance of the Cr-Si-Al alloys, so detailed investigation is required. In this study, two Cr-Si-Al alloys (high-Si & high-Al) were prepared in the form of cast ingots through a vacuum arc melting process and the microstructural changes after high temperature heating process were investigated. In the case of the cast high-Si alloy, a considerable amount of Cr3Si phase was formed, and its hardness was significantly higher than that of the cast high-Al alloy. Also, Al-rich phases (with the high Al/Cr ratio) were not found much compared to the high-Al alloy. Meanwhile, it was observed that the amount of the Al-rich phases reduced by the annealing heat treatment for both alloys. In the case of the high temperature heating at 1,400 ℃, no significant microstructural change was observed in the high Si alloy, but a little more coarse and segregated AlCr phases were found in the high Al alloy compared to the cast state.

  • Surface finish technology is highly demanded in the wide field of industry applications from ultra-precision parts to rough casting parts. Therefore, many kinds of surface finish technologies have been developed for each purpose. Because surface of a car's wheel cast is very rough it becomes the reason of the corrosion. This surface is coated to complement such problem but because surface is rough, the result of coating is not good and the coated metal peels off well. Therefore before the wheel is coated, it is necessary to grind the surface. In this study, we devised the plant to apply a barrel machining to improve the surface roughness and enhance the productivity. Also we could obtain the optimum barrel machining conditions for the proper surface roughness.
