  • Objectives: A number of studies have shown that chronic hepatitis B virus infection is implicated in susceptibility to pancreatic cancer. However, the results are still controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively assess the relationship between chronic hepatitis B virus infection and incidence of pancreatic cancer of cohort and case-control studies. Methods: A literature search was performed for entries from 1990 to 2012 using PUBMED and EMBASE. Studies were included if they reported odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% CIs of pancreatic cancer with respect to the infection of hepatitis B virus. Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria, which included five case-control studies and three cohort studies. Compared with individuals who have not infection of hepatitis B virus, the pooled OR of pancreatic cancer was 1.403 (95%CI: 1.139-1.729, P=0.001) for patients with hepatitis B virus infection. Sub-group analysis by study design showed that the summary OR was 1.43 (95%CI: 1.06-1.94, P=0.021) when pooling case-control studies and 1.31 (95%CI: 1.00-1.72, P=0.05) when pooling cohort studies. Conclusion: Findings from this meta-analysis suggest that chronic hepatitis B virus infection may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. This relationship needs to be confirmed by further follow-up studies.

  • The purpose of this case-control study was to show the relationship between risk factor(Sex, Age, Martial Status, Educational Periods, Family history, Variables of Obesity, Smoking Status, Drinking Status, Past History, Blood Test) and the incidence of stroke. Methods: 788 stroke patients were enrolled as the case group and 450 non-stroke patients as control group from Sep.2006 to Dec.2010. Patients were hospitalized within 30 days after the onset of stroke. Risk factors and warning signs were obtained from personal interview by oriental medicine doctors who used CRF. Results: 1. Age was found to have significant relation with stroke(p<.0001). 2. Martial status(p<.0001, OR=0.44) and educational periods(p<.0001) were both significant risk factor for stroke. 3. As a result of reviewing the influence of family history, it was found to have no significant relation with stroke. Stroke was found to have significant relation with stroke(OR=1.50). 4. Female waist circumference(WC, p<.0001) and female waist-hip circumference ratio(WHR, p<.0001) were risk factors for stroke. On the other hand, male WC and male WHR showed no significant influence on stroke occurrence as an independent risk factor. 5. Both smoking status(p<.0001, current smoker OR=8.95) and drinking status(p<.0001, current drinker OR=2.50, former drinker OR=2.82) were significant risk factors for stroke. 6. As a result of reviewing the influence of past history, transient ischemic attack(p<.0001, OR=8.46), hypertension(p<.0001, OR=4.72), hyperlipidemia(0.0064), diabetes mellitus(p<.0001, OR=3.34), stroke(p<.0001, OR=50.26) were significant risk factors. On the other hand, ischemic heart disease(p=0.2332) was found to have no significant relation with stroke. 7. Increase of WBC, RBC, Platelet, TG, FBS and Cl- level were significant risk factor of stroke, On the other hand, decrease of Hgb, Hct, AST, HDL-chol, LDH, Na+ and K+ level were significant risk factor of stroke. T-chol and ALT level showed no significant influence on stroke occurrence.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of adolescent consumers' attitudes toward money and conspicuous consumption on unethical consumption behavior in commercial transactions. The main survey was conducted targeting 290 middle and high school students. As a result of this research, first in the case of adolescent's attitudes toward money, the symbol for happiness and success was 3.11 and the means of control was 1.77 respectively. The level of conspicuous consumption behavior was 2.75 and the level of unethical consumption behavior scored as passive unethical consumption behavior was 1.38 while the active unethical consumption behavior was 2.10. Second, in the case of the attitude toward money as a means of control, it differentiated according to the level of living and the amount of allowance. Conspicuous consumption behavior differentiated according to the amount of allowance and the father's education. Active unethical consumption behavior showed a difference according to the amount of allowance and the father's education. Multiple linear regression analysis conducted to identify relative effects of the variables that affect unethical consumption behavior, in case of passive unethical consumption behavior, showed that conspicuous consumption(${\beta}$=.23, p<.01) and attitudes toward money as a means of control(${\beta}$=.29, p<.001) with an explanatory power of 18%. In the case of active unethical consumption behavior, showed that sex(${\beta}$=.16, p<.05), father's education(${\beta}$=-.15, p<.05), attitudes toward money as means of control(${\beta}$=.18, p<.5) and conspicuous consumption(${\beta}$=.36, p<.001) with an explanatory power of 26%.

  • Objectives: The association between body mass index (BMI) and ovarian cancer risk is unclear and requires further investigation. The present meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effect of overweight and obesity on ovarian cancer risk in the premenopausal and postmenopausal periods. Data sources: Major electronic databases were searched until February 2014 including Medline and Scopus. Reference lists and relevant conference databases were searched and the authors were contacted for additional unpublished references. Review Methods: All cohort and case-control studies addressing the effect of BMI on ovarian cancer were included, irrespective of publication date and language. The effect measure of choice was risk ratio (RR) for cohort studies and odds ratio (OR) for case-control studies. The results were reported using a random effects model with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Of 3,776 retrieved studies, 19 were ultimately analyzed including 10 cohort studies involving 29,237,219 person-years and 9 case-control studies involving 96,965 people. The results of both cohort and case-control studies showed being overweight and obesity increased the risk of ovarian cancer compared to women with normal weight during both premenopausal and postmenopausal periods: RR=1.08 (95%CI: 0.97, 1.19) and OR=1.26 (95%CI: 0.97, 1.63) for overweight and RR=1.27 (95%CI: 1.16, 1.38) and OR=1.26 (95%CI: 1.06, 1.50) for obesity. Conclusions: There is sufficient evidence that an increase in BMI can increase the risk of ovarian cancer regardless of the menopausal status, mimicking a dose-response relationship although the association is not very strong.

  • Objectives: This study aims to examine if the follow-up management service by National Health Insurance (NHI) for person at health risk leads to significant modification of the lifestyle and change of health status. Methods: Of persons who underwent health screening and were classified as having health risks after periodic health screening by NHI in 2003, persons who took the follow-up management service were selected as case group and persons who took no service were selected as control group. The DW database of NHI was used to explore the effect of the follow-up management service on the modification of health status and lifestyle. Chi-square tests were conducted with SAS 9.1 to examine the differences of health promotion effect between case vs. control group. Results: It was shown that of lifestyle behaviors, only exercise was significantly improved for case group compared with control group as the effect of the follow-up management service by NHI (2.98%p) (p<.0001). Further, morbidity rate for control group was 2% higher than that of case group (p <.0001), which indicates that persons who received the follow-up management service better maintained their health significantly than persons who did not. Conclusions: The present study shows that the appropriate follow-up management services need to be provided for maximizing potential effect of periodic health screening by NHI.

  • Objectives : In this study we examined the association between the genetic markers ACE (A-240T, C-93T, I/D, A2350G), AGT (M235T), AT1R (A1166C), CYP11B2 (T344C, V386A), REN (G2646A), ADRB2 (G46A, C79G, T47C, T1641), GNB3 (C825T) and ADD1 (G460W) and the presence of essential hypertension in adolescents. Methods : The Kangwha Study is an 18-year prospective study that is aimed at elucidating the determinants of the blood pressure level from childhood to early adulthood. For this study, we constructed a case-control dataset of size of 277 and 40 family trios data from the Kangwha Study. For this purpose, we perform a single locus-based case-control association study and a single locus-based TDT (transmission/disequilibrium test) study. Results : In the case-control study, the single locus-based association study indicated that the ADD1 (G460W) (p=0.0403), AGT (M235T) (p=0.0002), and REN (G2646A) (p=0.0101) markers were significantly associated with the risk of hypertension. These results were not confirmed on the TDT study. This study showed that genetic polymorphisms of the ADD1, AGT and REN genes might be related to the hypertension in Korean adolescents. Conclusions : This study provided useful information on genetics markers related to blood pressure. Further study will be needed to confirm the effect of the alpha adducin gene, the angiotensinogen gene and the renin gene on essential hypertension.

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the food and nutrients intakes of stomach cancer patients in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas in order to find out the dietary risk factors for stomach cancer. The subjects of the study were 102 patients who had recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer at the Gyeongbuk National University Hospital. The control subjects were 105 people including patients from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and healthy volunteers who did not have any gastrointestinal diseases. Estimates of nutrients intakes were determined from the food intake frequency data obtained by individual interviews using questionnaires. The mean daily calorie intakes of the control and the case groups were not significantly different. However the energy intake from protein was significantly higher in the case group as compared to the control group. With regard to the nutrients intakes, the case subjects consumed significantly higher amounts of nutrients such as protein, calcium, sodium, phosphorus and niacin than the control group. The case group showed a tendency to consume higher amount of protein, fat, calcium and iron from animal food sources. In the present study dietary factors which were suspected as being risk factors for stomach cancer included high consumption of animal foods, specific nutrients such as protein, sodium and niacin, specific food groups such as meat, spices, and low consumption of fruits and mushrooms. Therefore, it is recommended that more extensive and systematic surveys be conducted to confirm the risk factors for stomach cancer, taking into consideration the dietary cultural characteristics of this region. • Objectives : To investigate the effectiveness of Korean Medicine services use on the all-cause mortality and incidence of Parkinson's disease(PD) in elderly patients with chronic disease based on the National Health Insurance Service Corhort Database (elderly), called as the NHIS-senior. Methods : This study was a retrospective cohort analysis conducted using the NHIS-senior. Patients with chronic diseases over 65 years old who were not diagnosed PD during 2007-2009 were identified. The case group was defined as patients who used both Korean Medicine and Western Medicine services and the control group consisted of patients who used Western Medicine service only. The all-cause mortality and incidence of PD was analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model after a propensity score matching(PSM) with a 1:1 ratio. Results : After PSM, the cohort included 47,546 subjects (23,773 in the case group, 23,773 in the control group). Sex, age, comorbidity, severity of disability, and neurology medical service utilization were adjusted in both groups. The mortality was 0.668 times (95% C.I.: 0.646-0.690) lower in the case group than the control group, which was statistically significant (p<0.001). The incidence of PD was 1.051 times (95% C.I.: 0.962-1.148) higher in the case group than the control group, which was not statistically significant(p=0.272). Conclusion : It was not obvious that the use of both Korean Medicine service and Western Medicine services for prevention of PD is benefitial than using only Western Medicine. But it would be possible that using both Korean Medicine and Western Medicine services decreases the mortality than using Western Medicine alone.
