  • The method of natural spawning is very passive and inconvenient for the study of developmental engineering in marine medaka, Oryzias dancena. The optimum concentration of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and carp pituitary extract (CPE) for ovulation and spawning, and the injection time for the artificial spawning of marine medaka were analyzed in this study. The success rate, survival rate, and hatching rate were highest with 100IU HCG kg-1 BW and 5mg CPE L-1 in both male and female marine medaka (p<0.05). After obtaining unfertilized eggs and sperm by the injection of HCG and CPE into the broodstock of marine medaka, artificial fertilization could be successfully achieved any time fertilized eggs are needed in this species. This result should be useful for developing a study program for marine medaka as an experimental animal.

  • Spermiation was stimulated in the mature grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles, with an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or carp pituitary extract (CPE). Spermatocrit and sperm density were reduced, but milt production was increased in both the HCG and CPE treatment groups relative to those in the control group (P < 0.05). These results should be useful for increasing the fertilization efficiency in grass puffer breeding programs.

  • The spawning behavior of the silurid catfish, Silurus asotus, was observed from laboratory aquaria after treating with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and injection with pituitary extract of grass carp. The details of the spawning behavior presented here are based upon the observations made from 10 trials with 40 male and 20 female catfishes artificially bred between May and July, 1995. Initial spawning activity started 15 to 16 hours after injection with pituitary extract of grass carp and HCG. The activity was continued with for 2 to 3 hours and repeated mating behavior of the catfish were observed during this period. Compared to the spawning activity of the Japanese catifish, S. biwaensis, S. asotus took a different male position during the period o fsearching its partner. This study also reports some other differences in mating behavior between S. asotus and S. biwaensis.

  • Spawning of matured olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus was accelerated by using single injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG 1,000 IU/kg BW) or carp pituitary extract (CPE 10 mg/kg BW). The body weight of HCG or CPE treated group slightly improved with $5.6\pm0.4\%$ at 2 days after injection or $6.4\pm0.5\%$ at 3 days after injection, Number of eggs spawned increased in the fish treated with HCG or CPE. Surface floating rates of eggs spawned increased in the fish treated with HCG or CPE. Hatching rate also increased in experimental groups compared to the control. Especially superior quality of eggs were obtained 2 and 3 days after injection from HCG treated groups and 3 and 4 days after injection from CPE treated groups at $20^{\circ}$, respectively.
