Sensory and Nutritional Properties of Vegetable Rice Porridge Made with Israeli Carp Cyprinus carpio (향어(Cyprinus carpio) 야채죽의 관능 및 영양 특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the sensory and nutritional properties of vegetable rice porridge made with Israeli carp (VRP-IC), and to compare it with commercial vegetable rice porridges (controls). The proximate composition of VRP-IC per 100 g was 82.4 g moisture, 3.9 g protein, 2.6 g lipids, and 0.9 g ash, and had a lower moisture content than that of the controls, but a higher crude protein, crude lipid, and ash content. In terms of taste, VRP-IC was higher in umami and sourness, but lower in saltiness, sweetness, and bitterness. The viscosity and hardness of VRP-IC were 13,117 mPa·s and 2,258 N/m2, respectively. The total amino acid content of VRP-IC was 3,537.2 mg/100 g, with the maor amino acids being aspartic acid and glutamic acid. The mineral contents of VRP-IC per 100 g were as follows: 114 mg calcium, 70.3 mg phosphorus, 79.1 mg potassium, and 0.23 mg iron. These were all higher than those of the controls. The major fatty acids of VRP-IC were 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:2n-6, which were identical to those of the controls. The digestibility of VRP-IC was 86.4%, which was similar to those of the controls.

Effect of Ultrasound on the Growth and Short-term Behaviour of the Carp, Cyprinus carpio (초음파가 잉어 Cyprinus carpio의 성장 및 단기적 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, mortality, body wet weight, health assessment, and short-term behavioral mode were observed to determine the effects of ultrasound on the ecological response of the carp Cyprinus carpio. Mortality in the treatments was less than 5% during ultrasound exposure (31 dB re 1 ${\mu}Pa$, $14{\sim}15$ kHz) and there were no significant differences among the replicates (P>0.05). The treatments, based on mean wet weight, exhibited greater effect than the controls, but the magnitude of the differences was not large. Skins and tail fins of some test animals exposed to the controls and intensive treatment groups had light injury such as hemorrhaging, whereas, damages in other organs such as eyes, other fins, parasites, thymus, and gills were not observed (P>0.05). Sudden stimuli in low intensity at a short distance caused a directional avoidance of the fish from the sound. However, the carp exposed to ultrasound at the large scale field was not observed clear behavior changes. Overall results suggest that fish exposed to the low-intensity ultrasound had no serious stress during the tests.

Nutritional Properties of Cookies Made with Israeli Carp Cyprinus carpio (향어(Cyprinus carpio) 함유 쿠키의 영양특성)

  • This study was conducted to compare the nutritional properties of cookies made with Israeli carp Cyprinus carpio (C-IC) to those made without Israeli carp (control). The proximate composition of C-IC per 100 g was 4.1 g moisture, 9.7 g protein, 29.2 g lipid, 1.4 g ash, and 55.6 g carbohydrates. Moisture, protein and ash contents were significantly higher and the carbohydrate content was significantly lower (P<0.05) in C-IC than control, but there was no difference in lipid content (P>0.05). The total amino acid content of C-IC per 100 g was 9.46 g and the major amino acid was glutamic acid (2.49 g). The mineral contents of C-IC per 100 g were 216.6 mg calcium, 193.2 mg phosphorus, 170.9 mg potassium, and 18.2 mg magnesium, which were all significantly higher than the contents of the control (P<0.05). The major fatty acids of C-IC were 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:2n-6. The digestibility of C-IC in the small intestine was 51.3%, which was higher than the digestibility of the control. These results suggest that C-IC have better nutritional properties than the control.

  • The recommended species in fish acute toxicity test for pesticide registration in korea are common carp (Cyprinus carpio), killifish(Oryzias latipes) and loach(Misgurnus anguillicaudatus). But most of fish toxicity was evaluated using common carp. The common carp has several problems such as difficulty of room breeding, difference of sensitivity to breeding condition, limited experimental period, etc. For that reason, it is necessary to reexamine of test species. The present study investigated the sensitivity and correlation of $LC_{50}$ values that determined using the acute toxicity test with common carp and killifish. And this study is a realistic approach to evaluated appropriate species for fish acute toxicity test of pesticide. As a result, correlation coefficient(R) of the commom carp and killifish was high correlation of 0.8480 and the $LC_{50}$ values was not significant in the interspecies sensitivity. When the $LC_{50}$ values of common carp and killifish was compared with fish toxicity guideline in Korea, fish toxicity class has fluctuated in 18 pesticides with not very special tendency. Therefore, it is necessary to review of killifish has more advantage to standardization of fish culture and in the side of correlation and sensitivity of acute toxicity.

Effect of Dietary Carotenoids Sources on Growth and Skin Color of Red- and White-colored Fancy Carp Cyprinus carpio var. koi (배합사료 내 색소 원료에 따른 비단잉어 홍백C(yprinus carpio) 치어의 성장과 체색 변화)

  • A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary carotenoids sources on growth and skin color of red- and white-colored fancy carp Cyprinus carpio var. koi. Nine experimental diets (designated as Con, CP, PA, SP, OP, MB, TO, BE and PO) were formulated to contain Carophyll Pink, red paprika, Spirulina, Opuntia, mandarin bark, tomato, beet and Porphyra, respectively. Each experimental diet was fed to two replicate groups of fish (22.9 g/fish) to visual satiation three times a day for 8 weeks. Weight gain and feed efficiency of fish fed the diets containing Spirulina or Opuntia were higher than those of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). The values of $a^*$, $L^*$ and $b^*$ of fish skin were significantly changed by dietary carotenoids sources (P<0.05). The $a^*$ values of fish fed the diets containing Carophyll Pink, red paprika and Spirulina were higher than those of fish fed other diets (P<0.05). The skin total carotenoids of fish fed the diets containing Spirulina and Opuntia were higher than those of others (P>0.05). Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that dietary inclusion of red paprika and Spirulina pacifica could increase the skin redness of red- and white-colored fancy carp.

Analysis of Red Coverage in Red- and White-koi Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Red- and White-koi Carp (C. carpio)×Red Common Carp (C. carpio) Cross Progenies (홍백 비단잉어와 홍백 비단잉어×홍잉어 교배종의 적색소 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate color pattern and growth in cross progenies between kois and red common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Coverage of red color patches in skin was investigated in $koi{\times}koi$ (KK), $koi{\times}red$ common carp (KR) and red common $carp{\times}koi$ (RK) progenies in 170 days post-hatching (DPH) by analysis of digital photographs. KR cross group had higher length (P<0.05) and the mean weight than in the KK but there were no significant difference between KR and RK. All groups consisted of three color pattern white, white-red and red. The percentage of red-area coverage in skin was 64% in KK progenies, 56% in KR and 36% in RK. The red coverage (30~50%) was highly in KR (15%) than in KK (10%) and RK (12%). The application of red-area body coverage analysis may suggest potentially useful tool for ornamental fish selection.

Reproductive biology of common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) in Lake Hayq, Ethiopia

  • This study was conducted in Lake Hayq between January and December 2018. The objectives of this study were to determine the growth, condition, sex ratio, fecundity, length at first sexual maturity (L50), and spawning seasons of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Monthly fish samples of C. carpio were collected using gillnets of stretched mesh sizes of 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 13 cm and beach seines of mesh size of 6 cm. Immediately after the fish were captured, total length (TL) and total weight (TW) for each individual were measured in centimeters and grams, respectively, and their relationship was determined using power function. Length at first maturity (L50) was determined for both males and females using the logistic regression model. The spawning season was determined from the frequency of mature gonads and variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) values of both males and females. Fecundity was analyzed from 67 mature female specimens. The length and weight relationship of C. carpio was TW = 0.015TL2.93 for females and TW = 0.018TL2.87 for males that indicate negative allometric growth in both cases. The mean Fulton condition factor (CF) was 1.23 ± 0.013 for females and 1.21 ± 0.011 for males. The value of CF in both cases was > 1 that shows both sexes are in good condition. Among the total 1055 C. carpio collected from Lake Hayq, 459 (43.5%) were females and 596 (56.5%) were males. The chi-square test showed that there was a significant deviation between male and female numbers from 1:1 ratio (χ2= 22, df = 11, P > 0.05) within sampling months. The length at first sexual maturity (L50) for females and males were 21.5 and 17.5 cm, respectively. Males mature at smaller sizes than females. The spawning season of C. carpio was extended from February to April, and the peak spawning season for both sexes was in April. The average absolute fecundity was 28,100 ± 17,462. C. carpio is currently the commercially important fish while Nile tilapia fishery has declined in Lake Hayq. Therefore, this baseline data on growth, condition, and reproductive biology of common carp will be essential to understand the status of the population of carp and design appropriate management systems for the fish stock of Lake Hayq, Ethiopia, and adjacent countries.

Effects of Dietary Blood Meal as a Protein Source in Growing Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) (성장기 잉어(Cyprinus carpio) 사료에 있어서 단백질원으로서의 혈분 첨가효과)

  • A series of feeding experiments were conducted to study the possible utilization of blood meal as a dietary protein source in growing common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Diets were formulated on isonitrogenous and isocaloric basis of $40\%$ crude protein and 3,640 kcal/kg diet : diet 1 (100 FMP, control), $100\%$ fish meal Protein (FMP) : diet 2 (25 BMP), $75\%$ $FMP+25\%$ blood meal protein (BMP) : diet 3 (50 BMP), $50\%$ $FMP+50\%$ BMP : diet 4 (75 BMP), $25\%$ $FMP+75\%$ BMP : d;et 5 (100 BMP), $100\%$ BMP. As the dietary protein sources, $34.2\%$ of animal protein were supplied by FMP and/or BMP, and approximately $65.8\%$ of plant protein were used. In the first experiment, weight gain and feed efficiency were improved with increased level of blood meal protein in the diets. Weight gain and feed efficiency from fish fed diets 4 and S were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those from fish fed diets 1, 2 and 3. The second experiment was designed as a cross-over study to prove the first experiment's results. This cross-over study shows that weight gain from fish fed diet 5 is greater than that from fish fed diet 1. The third experiment was conducted to compare palatability between diet 1 (100 FMP) and 5 (100 BMP). The data from this palatability study indicated that the palatability of diet 5 was lower than that of diet 1 initially, however, the palatability of iiet 5 was improved and not worse than that of diet 1 within a week. Therefore, these findings may suggest that the fish meal can be replaced with blood meal completely in growing common carp diets.

Distribution of the fungicide hexaconazole in internal organs of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) (살균제 hexaconazole의 잉어(Cyprinus carpio L.) 장기 중 분포)

  • In order to elucidate the behavior of the fungicide hexaconazole (1-(6-chloro-3-pyrldyhnethyl)N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine) in carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), carps were exposed to [$^{14}C$]hexaconazole at a predicted environmental concentration (PEC) of 0.32 mg $L^{-1}$ for 4 days under static conditions. Hexaconazole in water was absorbed into carps to reach the maximum concentration 2 days after exposure. The amounts of the [$^{14}C$]hexaconazole and its metabolites absorbed in gall were much higher than those in the other organs and especially those in gall 2 days after exposure were 25 and 67 times higher than those in liver and kidney, respectively, strongly suggesting that biliary excretion involving enterohepatic recirculation could be an import route for the elimination of hexaconazole absorbed in carps.
