Vivianite (Fe32+(PO4)2·8H2O) and green rust ([Fe42+Fe23+(OH)-12][SO42-·2H2O]2-), ferrous containing minerals, could remove aqueous U(VI) in 5 min. and the efficiencies of green rust were roughly 2 times higher than that of vivianite. The zeta potential measurement results implies that the better performance of green rust might be attributed to the favorable surface charge toward uranyl phosphate species. The removal behaviors of the minerals were well fitted by pseudo-second order kinetic model (R2 > 0.990) indicating the dominant removal process was chemical adsorption. Effects of Ca2+ and CO32- at pH 7 were examined in terms of removal kinetic and capacity. The kinetic constants of aqueous U(VI) were 8 and 13 times lower (0.492 × 10-3 g/(mg·min); 0.305 × 10-3 g/(mg·min)) compared to the value in the absence of the ions. The thermodynamic equilibrium calculation showed that the stable uranyl species (uranyl tri-carbonate) were newly formed at the condition. Surface investigation on the reacted mineral with uranyl phosphates species were carried out by XPS. Ferrous iron and U(VI) on the green rust surface were completely oxidized and reduced into Fe(III) and U(IV) after 7 d. It suggests that the ferrous minerals can retard U(VI) migration in phosphate-rich groundwater through the adsorption and subsequent reduction processes.

This study was conducted to develop self-repairing ability for concrete so that inspection could be available even in the event of minute cracks, for more economic concrete structure maintenance and longevity. This is a basic attempt to develop self-repairing concrete using the biochemical reaction of bacteria through an innovative method. In this study, the characteristics and problems posed by self-repairing concrete as proposed in international scientific journals were examined, and the potential of new concrete reformation and performance improvement using bio-mineralization was explored. Bio-mineralization, which is an action of creating bio-minerals using an organism, was proposed. A new concept of bacteria such as bacillus pasteurii using bio-mineralization that precipitates calcium carbonate, as well as the possibility of mechanical performance and durability of concrete and repair of cracks, was introduced. Directions for further study through basic experiments and developmental feasibility of self-repairing concrete were also presented.
A hydrochemical comparative study of groundwater in uraniferous sedimentary rock of the Ogcheon belt was carried out to investigate the genetic relationship between uraniferous groundwater of Daejeon area and uraniferous sedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon zone. The groundwater shows weak alkaline pH values rangingfrom 6.4 to 8.1 and low Eh values ranging from -50 to 225 mV. The groundwaters to Ca-$HCO_3$ type that shows high concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $HCO_3^_$ due to the dissolution of carbonate mineral in limestone. The concentration of uranium in the groundwater was measured very low below $3.2{\mu}g/L$, while it was detected as much as $1165{\mu}g/L$ in the mine waste water. The low Eh value of groundwater is one of the main causes of low uranium concentration of groundwater in uraniferous sedimentary rocks in the Ogcheon belt. It is suggested that the uranium of groundwater in granitic region of Daejeon area was not mainly provided from uraniferous sedimentary rocks in the Ogcheon belt.
The shales from the Euiseong area are interbedded along the bedding in Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup, which are composed mainly of quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar and associated with trace amount of biotite, muscovite, chlorite, pyrite, hematite, carbonate and clay minerals. The ratio of $Al_2O_3/Na_2O$ and $K_2O/Na_2O$ in shales from the Shindong Group are ranged from 9.16 to 24.32 and from 1.70 to 5.97, and the Hayang Group ranged from 2.76 to 8.89 and from 0.42 to 2.74, which are negative correlated between $K_2O/Na_2O$ and $Al_2O_3/Na_2O$ against $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ respectively. Those are suggested that controlled of mineral compositions in shales due to substitution and migration of elements by sedimentation and diagenesis. These shale formation were deposited in basin of terrestrial environments originated from the igneous rocks, and the REE of these rocks are not influenced with diagenesis and hydrothermal alterations on the basis of $Al_2O_3$ versus La, La against Ce, Zr versus Yb, the ratios of La/Ce (0.43 to 0.62) and Th/U (1.11 to 10.71). The narrow range in trace and REE element characteristics as Co/Th (0.63 to 1.92), La/Sc (1.98 to 5.90), Sc/Th (0.58 to 1.30), V/Ni (0.90 to 3.25), Cr/V (0.45 to 1.78), Ni/Co (1.88 to 6.67) and Zr/Hf (30.04~60.87) of these shales argues for inefficient mixing of the simple source lithologies during sedimentation. These rocks also show much variation in $La_N/Yb_N$ (6.90 to 17.02), Th/Yb (4.17 to 13.68) and La/Th (1.98 to 5.90), and their origin is explained by derivation from a mixture of intermediate to acidic igneous rocks.
The sulfide and carbonate mineral samples for sulfur and carbon isotope studies were collected from Sangdong, Geodo, Yeonhwa, Shinyemi and Janggun mines which are distributed in the Metallogenetic Province of the Taebaeg Mt. Region. The ${\delta}S^{34}$ values of molybdenite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena from the above mines are similar and within the range of +1.66 to +6.77‰ with the exception of chalcopyrite from Geodo mine ranging from -1.58 to 1.96‰, while the sulfide minerals are dominated by positive values between +3.05 and +5.08‰. It is suggested that the major sulfur source is genetically related to the Cretaceous granitic activity. The average ${\delta}C^{13}$ values of calcite from limestone, calcite from calcite vein in ore bodies and granite, and rhodochrosite from ore bodies are -0.60‰, -2.69‰ and -6.00‰, respectively. The data on carbon isotope compositions indicate that the calcite from limestone originated in marine environment, the rhodochrosite in hydrothermal solution, and calcite from calcite vein and granite in the mixing condition of marine and hydrothermal waters. The temperatures of mineralization by the sulfur isotopic composition coexisting pyrite-pyrrhotite from Yeonhwa No.1, sphalerite-galena from Weolam and Dong-jeom of Yeonhwa No.1 mine, sphalerite-galena and pyrite-galena from Janggun mine were $273^{\circ}C$, $460{\sim}511^{\circ}C$, $561{\sim}690^{\circ}C$, $341^{\circ}C$ and $375^{\circ}C$, respectively.

The bulk and partition geochemistry was studied in two sediment cores collected from the axial valley of the north-central Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (FRSC), Lau back-arc Basin, southwest Pacific. The sediments consist of mostly volcanic ash, although minor amounts of biogenic and other components were present in some intervals. The major element composition of bulk sediments recalculated to a carbonate-free basis was in good agreement with the magma compositions of the adjacent Tofua Arc and the FRSC, with only significant difference in Mn content. The enrichment of Mn and other associated elements (e.g. Cu, Co, Ni, and P) is attributed to hydrothermal input to the sediments, as evidenced by their significant partitioning in the non-detrital phases according to the partition geochemistry. Hydrogenetic and diagenetic inputs were assessed to be relatively insignificant. Estimated hydrothermal Mn fluxes during the Holocene ranged between 5.0 and 37.1 mg cm-2 kyr-1, with the higher values in younger sediments, suggesting enhanced hydrothermal activity. The hydrothermal Mn fluxes comparable to or higher than those reported from other spreading centers with strong hydrothermal activities may indicate the presence of unknown hydrothermal vent sites and/or topographic restriction on the dispersal of hydrothermal plumes in the northern part of the FRSC.
$CO_2$ adsorption on mineral sorbents has a potential to sequester $CO_2$. This study used a density functional theory (DFT) study of $CO_2$ adsorption on barium oxide (BaO) in the presence of $H_2O$ to determine the role of $H_2O$ on the $CO_2$ adsorption properties on the ($2{\times}2$; $11.05\;{\AA}{\times}11.05\;{\AA}$) BaO (100) surface because BaO shows a high reactivity for $CO_2$ adsorption and the gas mixture of power plants generally contains $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. We investigated the adsorption properties (e.g., adsorption energies and geometries) of a single $CO_2$ molecule, a single $H_2O$ molecule on the surface to achieve molecular structures and molecular reaction mechanisms. In order to evaluate the coordinative effect of $H_2O$ molecules, this study also carried out the adsorption of a pair of $H_2O$ molecules, which was strongly bounded to neighboring (-1.91 eV) oxygen sites and distant sites (-1.86 eV), and two molecules ($CO_2$ and $H_2O$), which were also firmly bounded to neighboring sites (-2.32 eV) and distant sites (-2.23 eV). The quantum mechanical calculations show that $H_2O$ molecule does not influence on the chemisorption of $CO_2$ on the BaO surface, producing a stable carbonate due to the strong interaction between the $CO_2$ molecule and the BaO surface, resulting from the high charge transfer (-0.76 e).
We tested the limestone sludge produced in Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. as a filler powder for the effective use of portland cement. Hydration process was investigated by measuring the hydration rate, the amounts of non-evaporable water and compressive strength of cement-limestone sludge paste prepared by mixing limes-tone sludge with cement. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows: 1. There is no significant difference between the cases of adding up to 10% limestone sludge and those of unmixed cement system. However the reaction rate increases in the 5% limestone sludge system(due to the effects of fine). 2. The compressive strength increases proportionally with increasing the measured amount of non-evaporable water, Adding 5% limestone sludge also increases the strength a little higher, and the compressive strength and calcium silicate hydrates. In the case of the mixed limestone sludge, $2\theta$=$11.7^{\circ}$ peak appears in the samples of 28 days hydration. This peak indicted the presence of calcium carboaluminate hydrate. Although limestone sludge is generally regarded as a inert materials, some kinds of cement can produce a calcium carboaluminate by reacting with aluminate in cement pastes.
Mean sea level has recently been rising due to global warming causing coastal erosion. As Korea is peninsula, the land loss due to coastal erosion is critical. An approach in this study is cementing the coastal area using bacteria, which is called microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). This study tried to see how fresh water and sea water work with MICP as a solvent. Ureolytic activity during the MICP reaction was measured with deionized and sea water. A soil column was prepared to evaluate the strength of MICP-treated sand. Sands were treated by MICP with surface percolation method. As the treatmen t style was different with other conventional methods, several methods were proposed to properly evaluate the MICP-treated sand surface. A micro-scale evaluation was performed to assess the mineral structure treated by different solvents. As results, sea water rendered the ureolytic reaction slower. A needle penetrometer worked well to evaluate the MICP-treated sand surface. This study confirmed the utilization of sea water is feasible as the solvent of MICP.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of calcium extracted from salted anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) on the calcium metabolism of rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed low-calcium diets (0.15%) for 2 weeks after the adjustment period. Rats were divided into five groups and were fed experimental diet for four weeks. Experimental diets were low calcium (LC, 0.15% $CaCO_3$), 0.5% $CaCO_3$ (CC), seaweed calcium (SC), calcium lactate (LC), anchovy calcium (AC). The low-calcium diet group (LC) showed the lowest weight gain and had no differences among the groups with adequate calcium intake. Calcium retention was lowest in the LC group and higher in the CL, SC, AC groups than in SC groups. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level was highest in LC group, and significantly low in the CC and AC groups (p<0.05). Parathyroid hormone and osteocalcin levels showed no differences among experimental groups. The urine deoxypyridinoline (DPD) level was lower in AC and CC groups compared to the LC group (p<0.05). The dry weight of the femur showed no significant differences among normal calcium groups. The bone mineral density of the femur in AC and CC group were significantly higher than the LC group (p<0.05). From these results, calcium extracted from salted anchovy can be useful as a calcium supplement comparable with calcium carbonate.
