  • A carbon paste coated-wire ion-selective electrode for chloride (carbon chloride-CWE) was constructed using epoxy resin, ion-exchanger and carbon powder as a polymer membrane. Its utility, the composition of a polymer membrane, the response characteristics, and the selectivity were examined and applied to the environmental water analysis. The carbon chloride-CWE was prepared using a silver wire, which was covered with silver chloride and then coated with epoxy resin into which chloride ion-exchanger and carbon powder were previously incorporated in advance. The response of the carbon chloride-CWE was Nernstian for $1.0{\times}10^{-2}-2{\times}10^{-5}$ M chloride and the useful pH range from $10^{-2} M Cl- to 10^{-4} M Cl^-$ was 3.0-9.0. Furthermore, the selectivity of chloride over iodide, bromide, and cyanide was much improved compared with those for a solid state epoxy body chloride electrode and a liquid membrane chloride electrode. The carbon chloride-CWE was applied to determine Cl^-$ in tap and ground water. The obtained results were in good agreement with those by the established methods such as spectrophotometric or other chloride-selective electrode methods.

  • The catalytic activity of poly[(2,2'-bipyridine)copper(II)-μ4-oxalato] coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for O2 electroreduction is examined using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. The cyclic voltammograms show that O2 is electroreduced on pBpCuOx-coated GCE surfaces at a peak potential of ? 0.25 V in pH 4.7 acetate buffer media. The electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE occurs at 450 mV more positive potential than that found at a bare GCE. The catalytic activity originates from Cu(II) coordinated by bipyridine in the complexes and the polymer type Cu-complex films exhibit an enhanced stability compared to monomeric Cu-complexes during the O2 electroreduction. The rotating disk electrode measurements reveal that the electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE is a four-electron process. Kinetic parameters for O2 reduction on pBpCuOx-coated GCE are obtained from rotating disk experiments and compared with those on bare glassy carbon electrode surfaces.

  • An integral electrode-bipolar plate assembly, which is composed of electrode, conductive adhesive film (CAF) and bipolar plate, has been developed and evaluated for application with a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) to decrease contact resistance between electrode and bipolar plate. The CAF, made of EVA (ethylene-vinyl-acetate) material with carbon black or CNT (Carbon Nano Tube), is applied between the electrode and the bipolar plate to enable an integral assembly by adhesion. In order to evaluate the integral assembly of VRB by adhesive film, the resistivity of integral assembly and the performance of single cell were investigated. Thus, it was verified that the integral assembly is applicable to redox flow battery. Through resistance and contact resistance of bare EVA and CAF films on bipolar plate were changed. Among the adhesive films, CAF film coated with carbon black showed the lowest value in through resistance, and CAF film coated with CNT showed the lowest value in contact resistance, respectively. The efficiency of VRB single cell was improved by applying CAF films coated with carbon black and CNT, resulting in the reduced overvoltage in charging process. Therefore, the energy efficiency of both CAF films, about 84%, were improved than that of blank cell, about 79.5 % under current density at 40 mA cm-2. The energy efficiency of the two cells were similar, but carbon black coated CAF improved the coulomb efficiency and CNT coated CAF improved the voltage efficiency, respectively.

  • The purpose of this research is to prepare the aluminum electrode coated with activated carbon for removing air pollution dust. The experiments were studied on the selection of optimal polymer for binding aluminum plate with powdered activated carbon, preventing the pore blocking of activated carbon from polymer binder, and the dust treatability for the prepared activated carbon electrode. The optimal adhesive for coating activated carbon on an electric aluminum plate was polyvinyl acetate (PVA) with vinyl functional group. For the opening of the blocked pore with polymer, it was very effective to embed polymer solvent in pore of activated catbon firstly before mixing activated carbon with PVA, and then to devolatilize the embedded solvent of carbon pore at high temperature. The mass of trapped dust on aluminum electrode coated with activated carbon was about double of the trapped one on just aluminum electrode.

  • A 10" carbon nanotube field emission display device was fabricated with a novel structure with a hopping electron spacer (HES) by screen printing technique. HES plays a role of preventing the broadening of electron beams emitted from carbon nanotubes without electrical discharge during operation. The structure of the novel tetrode is composed of carbon nanotube emitters on a cathode electrode, a gate electrode, an extracting electrode coated on the top side of a HES, and an anode. HES contains funnel-shaped holes of which the inner surfaces are coated with MgO. Electrons extracted through the gate are collected inside the funnel-shaped holes. They hop along the hole surface to the top extracting electrode. In this study the effects of the addition of HES on emission characteristics of field emission display were investigated. An active ozone treatment for the complete removal of residues of organic binders in the emitter devices was applied to the field emission display panel as a post-treatment.

  • The electrocatalytic reduction of molecular oxygen was investigated with a Co(II)-glyoxal bis(2-hydroxyanil) complex coated-glassy carbon (GC) electrode in aqueous media. The reduction of $O_2$ at the modified electrode was an irreversible and diffusion-controlled reaction. The complex coated-GC electrode demonstrated an excellent electrocatalytic effect for $O_2$ reduction in an acetate buffer solution of pH 3.2. The coated electrode made the $O_2$ reduction potential shift of 60-510 mV in a positive direction compared to the bare GC electrode depending on pH. The Co(II)-glyoxal bis(2-hydroxyanil) coated electrode converted about 51% of the $O_2$ to $H_2O_2$ via a two-electron reduction pathway, with the balance converted to H_2O$.

  • A microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been regarded as noble clean energy technology that can directly convert biomass to electricity. However, its low power density is a main limitation to be used as a new energy source. To overcome this limitation, we focused on the anode improvement in a mediator-type MFC using P. vulgaris as a biocatalyst. Fuel cell performance increased when the anode was coated with carbon black or polypyrrole. The best performance was observed when polypyrrole/carbon black (Ppy/CB) composite material was coated on a carbon paper electrode. Our obtained value of 452 mW $m^{-2}$ is the highest value among the reported ones for the similar system. The effects of amount of Ppy/CB, mediator concentration, and amount of P. vulgaris have also been examined.

  • This study aimed to develop a new dust collecting system equipped with an activated carbon (A.C.) coated electrode. Before fabrication, pre-treatment of A.C. was performed to remove metal ions within the A.C. to enlarge its specific surface area. Then, pre-treated A.C., black carbon, polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), and methanol were mixed to make a gel compound, which was coated onto aluminum plates to fabricate electrodes. The optimal mixing ratio of A.C., black carbon, PVAc, and methanol was found to be 10 g: 2 g: 3 g: 20 mL. After fabrication, the electrodes were used in the batch-type experiment for $NH_3$ and $H_2S$ removal. The reduction rates of the gases were high at the beginning and slowly reduced with time. Dust collection experiments were conducted in continuous flow, with various voltages applied. Compared to 5 kV, dust removal efficiency was 1.5 times higher when 10 kV was applied. Increasing the number of electrodes applied also increased the collecting efficiency. The correlation coefficient between actual collecting efficiency and trend line was higher than 99%. Consequently, the novel dust collection system equipped with A.C. coated electrode appears to be a promising substitute for existing dust-control devices.

  • Herein, insoluble single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) was successfully dispersed into water in the presence of a special kind of surfactant-dicetyl phosphate (DCP), subsequently, a SWNT-DCP composite film coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated. The electrochemical behaviors of 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) at the unmodified GCE and SWNT-DCP modified GCE were examined. It is found that the SWNT-DCP modified GCE remarkably enhances the oxidation peak current of 6-BAP, indicating great potential in the determination of trace level of 6-BAP. Finally, a sensitive and simple voltammetric method with a good linear relationship in the range of ${\times}5.0\;\;10^{-8}\sim 2.5\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ mol/L, was developed for the determination of 6-BAP. The detection limit is as low as $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L for 3-min accumulation. This newly-proposed method was successfully demonstrated with practical samples.

  • Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with a certain degree of sulfonation were synthesized by reacting PEEK and sulfuric acid at different reaction time. Then ion-selective composite carbon electrodes (ISCCE) were fabricated by coating the prepared SPEEK on the surface of carbon electrodes. The specific capacitance and resistance of the ISCCE were analyzed by electrical impedance spectroscopy. The ion exchange capacities (IEC) of the SPEEKs were measured in the range of 1.60~2.57 meq/g depending on the sulfonation time. The SPEEK more than 2.5 meq/g of IEC was considered unsuitable for fabricating the ISCCE because it was dissolved in water. The specific capacitance of the prepared ISCCE increased with increasing the IEC of coated SPEEKs and the capacitance was improved up to about 20% compared to that of uncoated carbon electrode. In addition, the electrical resistance of coating layer decreased significantly with increasing the IEC of coated SPEEKs. It is expected that the desalination efficiency of conventional capacitive deionization process can be improved by using the prepared ISCCE coated with SPEEK.
