Changes in concentrations of dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, pH, Fe and Mn were monitored from the laboratory incubation of an benthic chamber. The extent of sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen decomposition was quantified by applying the concentration data to the chemical reaction equations of early diagenesis. The patterns of the concentration changes, observed during the 237 hr long incubation experiment, made it possible to divide the entire experiment period into four characteristic sub-periods (0-9 hr, 9-45 hr, 45-141hr, 141-237 hr). C/N ratio, estimated for each sub-period, was 6.63, 1.49, 0.81 and 0.02, respectively. This sequential decrease in C/N ratio suggests that during the incubation experiment dissolved nitrogen species diffuse more out of the sediment than dissolved carbon species. Greater diffusion of nitrogen indicates the preferential decomposition of organic nitrogen during early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter. Comparison of the concentration data (sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen, porewater organic carbon and ammonia)between the sediment pre and post incubation also indicates the preferential decomposition of nitrogen during early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter.
Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were synthesized using the rf-plasma CVD technique with the addition of small amounts of nitrogen and oxygen to a gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$. The gas flow ratio of $CH_4$ to $H_2$ was 2.4:1, and 3% , 13.6% of nitrogen were added to the gas mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ for the deposition of DLC films. The film stress tended to decrease as the nitrogen concentration increased from 3% to 13.6%, probably due to the decrease of the number of the interlink between carbon atoms. The residual stress tended to slightly decrease when 3% of oxygen was added. Scratch tests were performed to investigate the adhesion between the DLC films and the Ti intelayer after pretreating the TiN surface with direct hydrogen plasma. The adhesion was enhanced by adding nitrogen and oxygen to the $CH_4$ and $H_2$ gas mixture. The adhesion for the 3% nitrogen addition was better than that for the 13.6% nitrogen addition. The Vicker's hardness of the DLC films was measured to be 1100Hv.
This study was conducted to analyze the operating conditions of predenitrification process to improve the treatment efficiency in low organic loading sewage plant in use today, and to investigate the treatment efficiency of pilot plant added night soil as well as the nitrogen removal characteristics of pilot plant added carbon sources. In the operation under the condition of $BOD_{5}$ sludge load 0.03-0.28kg $BOD_{5}$/kg VSS/d and oxic ammoniac nitrogen sludge load 0.02-0.24 $kgNH_{4}^{+}$-N/kg MLVSS/d, nitrification efficiency is higher than 95%. In order to achieve 70% nitrogen removal at the T-N sludge loading 0.06kg T-N/kg VSSㆍd and the SRT 6~11 days, optimum operating factors were revealed to $CODc_{r}$/T-N ratio 9, recycle ratio 2.6, and denitrification volume ratio 0.33. At this time, denitrification capacity was approximately 0.09 kg $NO_{3}^{-}$-N/kg $CODc_{r}$; specific nitrification rate was 3.4mg $NH_{4}^{+}$-N/g MLVSS/hr; and specific denitrification rate was 4.8mg $NO_{3}^{-}$-N/g MLVSS/hr.

Background: As the decomposition of lignocellulosic compounds is a rate-limiting stage in the nutrient mineralization from organic matters, elucidation of the changes in soil enzyme activity can provide insight into the nutrient dynamics and ecosystem functioning. The current study aimed to assess the effect of thinning intensities on soil conditions. Un-thinned control, 20 % thinning, and 30 % thinning treatments were applied to a Larix kaempferi forest, and total carbon and nitrogen, total carbon to total nitrogen ratio, extractable nutrients (inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium), and enzyme activities (acid phosphatase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, ${\beta}$-glucosaminidase) were investigated. Results: Total carbon and nitrogen concentrations were significantly increased in the 30 % thinning treatment, whereas both the 20 and 30 % thinning treatments did not change total carbon to total nitrogen ratio. Inorganic nitrogen and extractable calcium and magnesium concentrations were significantly increased in the 20 % thinning treatment; however, no significant changes were found for extractable phosphorus and potassium concentrations either in the 20 or the 30 % thinning treatment. However, the applied thinning intensities had no significant influences on acid phosphatase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-xylosidase, and ${\beta}$-glucosaminidase activities. Conclusions: These results indicated that thinning can elevate soil organic matter quantity and nutrient availability, and different thinning intensities may affect extractable soil nutrients inconsistently. The results also demonstrated that such inconsistent patterns in extractable nutrient concentrations after thinning might not be fully explained by the shifts in the enzyme-mediated nutrient mineralization.
The ductile-to-brittle transition behavior of two austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn alloys with the combined addition of nitrogen and carbon was investigated in this study. The alloys exhibited a ductile-to-brittle transition behavior because of unusual brittle fracture at low temperatures unlike conventional austenitic alloys. The alloy with higher carbon content had higher yield and tensile strengths than that with lower carbon content due to the solid solution strengthening effect resulting from carbon addition. However, the increase in carbon content promoted the occurrence of intergranular fracture, and thus deteriorated the impact toughness. In order to develop successfully the austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn alloys with the excellent combination of strength and toughness in the future, therefore, more systematic studies are required to find the appropriate amount and ratio of nitrogen and carbon.
The culture conditions and nutritional requirements for enhanced mycelial growth of the ectomycorrhizal fungus P. tinctorius SMF were determined in flask scale experiments. Optimum culture conditions for growth of P. tinctorius SMF in a further modified Melin-Norkrans broth were as follows; temperature 25~$27^{\circ}C$, agitation 120 rpm, and pH 4.0. P. tinctorius SMF utilized various carbon sources including monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. D-Glucose and mannitol were respectively the first and second most suitable carbon sources for mycelial growth. With D-Glucose as the principal carbon source, supplementation of modified Melin-Norkrans (MMN) broth with Lysine (800 mg/l), Glutamic Acid (500 mg/l), or Proline (50 mg/l) enhanced mycelial yields 63%, 34%, and 22% respectively as compared to growth in medium lacking amino acids. ThiaminㆍHCl+biotin+pyridoxine supplementation also enhanced growth. As compared to mycelial growth in the MMN medium, growth of P. tinctorius SMF was enhanced 120% in MMN broth when the carbon/nitrogen ratio was 25/1 in citrate buffer at pH 4.5, and growth was 50% greater in MMN broth of carbon/nitrogen ratio with a 10/1~20/1 without using the buffer. Standard conditions established for growth of P. tinctorius SMF in MMN broth were 25~$27^{\circ}C$, agitation 120 rpm, buffered to pH 4.0 with citrate, in MMN medium containing 10 g/l D-glucose supplemented with 800 mg/l lysine. In this medium the carbon/nitrogen ratio was 20/1~25/1, and the maximal mycelial yield ($Y_{x/s}$ ) was 0.472 (4.72 mg/ml) after 7 days of incubation, as compared to 0.214 (2.14 mg/ml), when the fungus was grown in standard MMN broth.
Styrofoam beads, which are relatively inexpensive and can provide a large specific surface area, were tested as filter media. Styrofoam beads with a diameter of $3{\pm}0.5mm$ were used; the specific surface area of the beads was $1,034m^2{\cdot}m^{-3}$. Five independent recirculating culture systems were used in the experiment. Each system consisted of one culture tank and three trickling bio-filters. Using the systems, nitrification efficiency was evaluated with respect to hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. The lowest ammonia and nitrogen concentrations were $0.84mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $1.30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, observed at an HLR of $50.9m^3{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}h^{-1}$. Nitrification efficiency in the culture tank was highest at a C/N ratio of 0, with ammonia and nitrite nitrogen concentrations of $0.32mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $0.90mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. Ammonia and nitrite nitrogen concentrations in the culture tank abruptly changed at C/N ratios ${\geq}3$.
Plant functional traits have been shown to be useful to understand how and why ecosystems and their components vary across environmental heterogeneity or gradients. This study investigated how plant functional (leaf) traits vary according to an elevation-associated environmental gradient. Environmental gradients (mean annual temperature and precipitation) were quantified, and leaf traits (leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf nitrogen, leaf phosphorus, leaf carbon, and leaf C/N ratio) of the understory woody plant species Acer pseudosieboldianum were examined across an elevational gradient ranging from 600 to 1200 m in a Baegunsan Mountain in Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. The results showed that mean annual temperature and precipitation decreased and increased along with elevation, respectively. Leaf area of the plant species decreased slightly with increasing elevation, while specific leaf area did not differ significantly. Leaf nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon concentrations) were higher at high elevations, but leaf C/N ratio decreased with elevation.
The feasibility of enhancing biological nutrient removal from an industrial wastewater was tested with food waste leachate and sugar liquid waste as external carbon sources. Long term influences of adding external carbon sources were investigated to see how the biological nutrient removal process worked in terms of the removal efficiency. The addition of the external carbons led to a significant improvement in the removal efficiency of nutrients: from 49% to approximately 76% for nitrogen and from 64% to around 80% for phosphorus. Approximately, 20% of the removal nitrogen was synthesized into biomass, while the remaining 80% was denitrified. Though the addition of external carbon sources improved nutrient removal, it also increased the waste sludge production substantially. The optimal observed BOD/TN ratio, based on nitrogen removal and sludge production, was around 4.0 in this study.

During the past ten years, Near Infrared Spectroscopy has been successfully applied to the analysis of a great variety of agriculture products. Previous works (Morra et al., 1991; Salgo et al., 1998) have shown the potential of this technology for soil analysis, estimating different parameters just with one single scan. The main advantages of NIR applications in soils are the speed of response, allowing the increase of the number of samples analysed to define a particular soil, and the instantaneous elaboration of recommendations for fertilization and soil amendment. Another advantage is to avoid the use of chemical reagents at all, being an environmentally safe technique. In this paper, we have studied a set of 129 soil samples selected from representative glasshouse soils from Southern Spain. The samples were dried, milled, and sieved to pass a 2 mm sieve and then analysed for organic carbon, total nitrogen, inorganic nitrogen (nitrate ammonium), hygroscopic humidity, pH and electrical conductivity in the 1:1 extract. NIR spectra of all samples were obtained in reflectance mode using a Foss NIR Systems 6500 spectrophotometer equipped with a spinning module. Calibration equations were developed for seven analytical parameters (ph, Total nitrogen, organic nitrogen, organic carbon, C/N ratio and Electric Conductivity). Preliminary results show good correlation coefficients and standard errors of cross validation in equations obtained for Organic Carbon, Organic Nitrogen, Total Nitrogen and C/N ratio. Calibrations for nitrates and nitrites, ammonia and electric conductivity were not acceptable. Calibration obtained for pH had an acceptable SECV, but the determination coefficient was found very poor probably due to the reduced range in reference values. Since the estimation of Organic Carbon and C/N ratio are acceptable NIIRS could be used as a fast method to assess the necessity of organic amendments in soils from Mediterranean regions where the low level of organic matter in soils constitutes an important agronomic problem. Furthermore, the possibility of a single and fast estimation of Total Nitrogen (tedious determination by modifications of the Kjeldahl procedure) could provide and interesting data to use in the estimation of nitrogen fertilizer rates by means of nitrogen balances.
