  • This study has been performed to investigate into the internal oxidation characteristics of low carbon steel with respect to the added amount of air in nitrogen-propane atmosphere after gas carburizing for various times at $930^{\circ}C$. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; (1) Optical micrographs have shown that the internal oxidation is unlikely to occur in the gas atmosphere without air and that oxidized zone in the outer surface layer is formed in the gas atmosphere with air revealing that the depth of oxidized zone increases with increasing the added amount of air. (2) The formation of internally oxidized zone in the outer surface layer has been found to be inhibited as Ni content increases, i. e, the amount of alloying element increases. (3) The depth of oxidation has been measured to increase with almost parabolically gas carburizing time of up to 6 hours.

  • $Cr_2AlC$ compounds were synthesized by hot pressing, and oxidized between 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 50 hours. They oxidized to a thin $Al_2O_3$ layer containing a small amount of $Cr_2O_3$with the liberation of carbon as CO or $CO_2$ gases. The consumption of Al to form the $Al_2O_3$ layer led to the depletion of Al and enrichment of Cr just below the $Al_2O_3$ layer, resulting in the formation of an underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer. As the oxidation temperature and time increased, the $Cr_7C_3$ oxide layer and the underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer thickened. The oxidation resistance of $Cr_2AlC$ was generally good due to the formation of the $Al_2O_3$ barrier layer.

  • Medium carbon steel was aluminized by hot dipping into molten Al or Al-1 at% Si baths. After hot-dipping in these baths, a thin Al-rich topcoat and a thick alloy layer rich in $Al_5Fe_2$ formed on the surface. A small amount of FeAl and $Al_3Fe$ was incorporated in the alloy layer. Silicon from the Al-1 at% Si bath was uniformly distributed throughout the entire coating. The hot dipping increased the microhardness of the steel by about 8 times. Heating at $700-1000^{\circ}C$, however, decreased the microhardness through interdiffusion between the coating and the substrate. The oxidation at $700-1000^{\circ}C$ in air formed a thin protective ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ layer, which provided good oxidation resistance. Silicon was oxidized to amorphous silica, exhibiting a glassy oxide surface.

  • There is a worldwide interest in the development and commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells [PEMFCs] for vehicular and stationary applications. One of the major objectives is the reduction of loaded electrode materials, which is comprise of the Pt-based noble metals. In this paper, a novel chemical strategy is described for the preparation and characterization of carbon-supported and surface-alloys, which were prepared by using a successive reduction process. After preparing Au colloid nanoparticles, the supporting of Au colloid nanoparticles occurred spontaneously in the carbon black-dispersed aqueous solution. Then nano-scaled active materials were formed on the surface of carbon-supported Au nanoparticles. The structural and electrochemical analyses indicate that the active materials were deposited on the surface of Au nanoparticles selectively and that an alloying process occurred during the successive reducing process. The carbon-supported & surface-alloys showed the higher electrocatalytic activity than those of the particle-alloys and commercial one [Johnson-Matthey] for the reaction of methanol and formic acid oxidation. The increased electrocatalytic activity might be attributed to the effective surface structure of surface-alloys, which have a high utilization of active materials for the surface reaction of electrode.

  • Mesoporous carbons with tailored pore size were prepared by using sucrose as the carbon source and silicas as the templates. The silica templates were obtained from a hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin-silica hybrids using ammonium perchlorate oxidation at different temperatures to remove the organic matter. The structures and surface chemistry properties of these carbon materials were characterized by $N_2$ adsorption, TEM, SEM and FTIR measurements. The catalytic performances of these carbon materials were investigated through the reduction of nitroaromatic using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent. Compared with other carbon materials, such as active carbon, and carbon materials from the silica templates obtained by using calcination to remove the organic matter, these carbon materials exhibited much higher catalytic activity, no obvious deactivation was observed after recycling the catalyst four times. Higher surface area and pore volume, and the presence of abundant surface oxygen-containing functional groups, which originate from the special preparation process of carbon material, are likely responsible for the high catalytic property of these mesoporous carbon materials.

  • The carbon felt is usually hired as electrodes for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). In the study, surface modification of carbon felt under CO2 atmosphere with variables of operating various temperature ranges between 700℃ and 900℃. The qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to observe degree of surface modification. Result of XPS analysis confirmed increase of carbon and oxidation functional group on the surface with increase of temperature. SEM image was discovered similar phenomena. Electrochemical characteristics such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed the improved electrode performance with increase of temperature. However, the electrochemical performance under treatments temperature of 900℃ was less than that of under treatment temperature of 850℃ due to weight loss at the treatment temperature of 900℃. From the CV and EIS results, the best electrochemical characteristics was at the temperature of 850℃. That of at the temperature of 900℃ was decreased due to weight loss. The energy efficiencies (EE) obtained from full cell test were 69.37, 80.76, 82.45, and 75.47%, at the temperature of 700, 800, 850, and 900℃, respectively.

  • Thermal emissivity of commercial nuclear graphites (IG-110, PCEA, IG-430 and NBG-18) following changes in oxidation degrees were examined. Specimens were oxidized to 0%, 5%, and 10% in air flow of 5l/min at $600^{\circ}C$ using a furnace, and the thermal emissivities were measured using an infrared spectrum analyzer. The measuring temperatures for the thermal emissivity were $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ $500^{\circ}C$. Also density and porosity of the specimens were observed to compare with thermal emissivity. Results showed that emissivity increased with oxidation, and the 10% oxidized NBG-18 showed the highest emissivity (0.890) which value is larger for 24% than the value of as-received specimen. Investigation of factors affecting the emissivity revealed that increases in the surface roughness and porosity due to oxidation were responsible for the increase in emissivity after oxidation.

  • The effect of reductants (Ti, Si, Al, Mn, Fe) addition into molten Borax has been studied on oxidation resistance and the growth of boronized layer formed during electro-boronizing on the substrate such as carbon steel and STS 430. Experiments have been carried out at the current density of 0.5 A/$\cm^2$ and in temperature range of 600~$1000^{\circ}C$ for 1~5 hours. The penetrated depth of the boron increased with addition of reductants (Ti, Si, Al) and decreased with addition of Mn and Fe. But excessive addition of reductants inhibited the boronizing due to an increase in viscosity of electrolyte. Oxidation resistance of the boronized carbon steel was improved but that of the boronized STS 430 decreased.

  • Surface hardening of plain carbon steel (SM45C) by Laser are usually much finer and stronger than those of the base metals. The present study was under taken to investigate the wear resistance and a processing parameters such as, power density, pulse width, defocusing distance, and molten depth for surface modification of plain carbon steel. The wear test was carried out under experimental condition using the wear test device, and in which the annular surfaces of wear test specimens as well as mating specimen of alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) was rubbed in dry sliding condition. It is shown that molten depth and width depend on defocusing distance. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was much in lower speed range below 0.2m/sec and in higher speed range above 0.7m/sec, but wear loss was little in intermediate speed range. It depends on oxidation speed and wear speed.
