To investigate the load bearing capacity of axially preloaded circular hollow section (CHS) stub columns strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), theoretical analysis is carried out. The yield strength and the ultimate strength of a CFRP strengthened preloaded CHS stub column are determined at the yielding of the CHS tube and at the CFRP fracture, respectively. Theoretical models are proposed and corresponding equations for calculating the static strengths, including the yield strength and the ultimate strength, are presented. Through comparison with reported experimental results, the theoretical predictions on the static strengths are proved to be accurate. Through finite element (FE) analyses, parametric studies for 258 models of CFRP strengthened preloaded CHS stub columns are conducted by considering different values of tube diameter, tube thickness, CFRP layer and preloading level. The static strengths of the 258 models predicted from presented equations are proved to be in good agreement with FE simulations when the diameter-to-thickness ratio is less than 90ε2. The parametric study indicates that the diameter and the thickness of the steel tube have great effects on CFRP strengthening efficiency, and the recommended ranges of the diameter and the thickness are proposed.
This study investigates the bending behavior of a composite concrete slab roof with different methods of externally strengthing using steel plates and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. First, the concrete slab model which was reinforced with CFRP strips on the bottom surface of it is validated using experimental data, and then, using numerical modeling, 7 different models of square-shaped composite slab roofs are developed in ABAQUS software using the finite element modeling. Developed models include steel rebar reinforced concrete slab with variable thickness of CFRP and steel plates. Considering the control sample which has no external reinforcement, a set of 8 different reinforcement states has been investigated. Each of these 8 states is examined with 6 different uncertainties in terms of the properties of the materials in the construction of concrete slabs, which make 48 numerical models. In all models loading process is continued until complete failure occurs. The results from numerical investigations showed using the steel plates as an executive method for strengthening, the bending capacity of reinforced concrete slabs is increased in the ultimate bearing capacity of the slab by about 1.69 to 2.48 times. Also using CFRP strips, the increases in ultimate bearing capacity of the slab were about 1.61 to 2.36 times in different models with different material uncertainties.
Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.
In this study, the effects of initial damage of concrete columns on the post-repair performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite are investigated experimentally. Four kinds of compression-damaged RC cylinders were reinforced using external CFRP composite wraps, and the stress-strain behavior of the composite/concrete system was investigated. These concrete cylinders were compressed to four pre-damaged states including low -level, medium -level, high -level and total damage states. The percentages of the stress levels of pre-damage were, respectively, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of that of the control RC cylinder. These damaged concrete cylinders simulate bridge piers or building columns subjected to different magnitudes of stress, or at various stages in long-term behavior. Experimental data, as well as a stress-strain model proposed for the behavior of damaged and undamaged concrete strengthened by external CFRP composite sheets are presented. The experimental data shows that external confinement of concrete by CFRP composite wrap significantly improves both compressive strength and ductility of concrete, though the improvement is inversely proportional to the initial degree of damage to the concrete. The failure modes of the composite/damaged concrete systems were examined to evaluate the benefit of this reinforcing methodology. Results predicted by the model showed very good agreement with those of the current experimental program.

In this study, 4 directional carbon/carbon composites with different preform architectures were manufactured and their thermophysical properties are studied. Carbon fiber preforms are fabricated with fiber bundles using four different spaces. The density of the fabricated preforms were increased through pressure impregnation and carbonizing process. The increased density of the composites was graphitized at $2300^{\circ}C$. Microstructures of these composite were observed under scanning electron microscope. This was to understand the effect the preform architectures has on the thermophysical properties of carbon/carbon composites. Also, the behavior of thermal conduction and heat expansion was investigated and studied in association with the factors of the reinforced direction of fibers and unit cell of preforms.

This study presents the effectiveness of a composite structure at improving blast resistance. The proposed composite structure consists of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and steel layers. While CFRP layer is used for blast energy reflection due to its high strength, steel layer is used for blast energy absorption due to its high ductility. A dynamic model is used to simulate the elastoplastic behavior of the proposed composite structure subject to blast load. Considering the magnitude variations of a blast event, the probability of failure of each layer is evaluated using reliability analysis. By assigning design probability of failure of each layer in the composite structure, the thickness of layers is optimized. A case study for the design of CFRP-steel composite structure subjected to an uncertain blast event is also presented.

The performance of carbon fiber is important for the production of these high-quality polymer composite materials such as CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). For this purpose, it is essential to use an optimized spinning process for improving the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of the precursor fiber, which greatly affects the properties of the carbon fiber, and the use of a suitable precursor polymer. In this study, the content of MAA (Methacrylic Acid), MAA injection time, and concentration of AIBN (2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile)) were set as parameters for the polymer synthesis process, and Poly(AN-co-MAA) (poly(acrylonitrile-co-methacrylic acid)) was polymerized by solution polymerization. Poly(AN-co-MAA) with a molecular weight of 305,138 g/mol and an MAA ratio of 4.2% was dissolved in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) at a concentration of 16.0 wt%, and then a precursor fiber was prepared through dry-jet-wet spinning. The precursor fiber had a tensile strength of ~1.06 GPa and a tensile modulus of ~22.01 GPa, and no voids and structural defects were observed on the fiber.
The pack-cementation process is the method which is formed SiC coating layer to improve weak oxidation properties of CFRCs (carbon fiber-reinforced carbons). This method develops the anti-oxidation coating layer having no dimensional changes and good wetting properties. In this study to improve the oxidative resistance of the prepared 4D CFRCs, the surface of CFRCs is coated by SiC using pack cementation method. The mechanical properties of SiC-coated 4D CFRCs are measured by the 3-point bending test, and their ablation properties are investigated by the arc torch plasma test. From the results, it is found that both mechanical and ablation properties of SiC-coated 4D CFRCs are much better than bare CFRCs.

In modern buildings, glass is considered a structurally unsafe material due to its brittleness and unpredictable failure behavior. The possible use of structural glass elements (i.e., floors, beams and columns) is generally prevented by its poor tensile strength and a frequent occurrence of brittle failures. In this study an innovative modelling based on an equivalent thickness concept of laminated glass beam reinforced with FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composite material and of glass plates punched is presented. In particular, the novel numerical modelling applied to an embedding Carbon FRP-rod in the interlayer of a laminated structural glass beam is considered in order to increase both its failure strength, together with its post-failure strength and ductility. The proposed equivalent modelling of different specimens enables us to carefully evaluate the effects of this reinforcement. Both the responses of the reinforced beam and un-reinforced one are evaluated, and the corresponding results are compared and discussed. A novel equivalent modelling for reinforced glass beams using FRP composites is presented for FEM analyses in modern material components and proved estimations of the expected performance are provided. Moreover, the new suggested numerical analysis is also applied to laminated glass plates with wide holes at both ends for the technological reasons necessary to connect a glass beam to a structure. Obtained results are compared with an integer specimen. Experimental considerations are reported.
Shape Memory Polymer Composites (SMPC) have gained popularity over the last few decades due to its flexible shape memory behaviour over wide range of strains and temperatures. In this paper, non-linear bending analysis has been carried out for SMPC beam under the application of uniformly distributed transverse load (UDL). Simplified C0 continuity Finite Element Method (FEM) based on Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory (HSDT) has been adopted for flexural analysis of SMPC. The numerical solutions are obtained by iterative Newton Raphson method. Material properties of SMPC with Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) as matrix and carbon fibre as reinforcements, have been calculated by theory of volume averaging. Effect of temperature on SMPC has been evaluated for numerous parameters for instance number of layers, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction of carbon fiber and laminate stacking orientation. Moreover, deflection profile over unit length and behavior of stresses across thickness are also presented to elaborate the effect of glass transition temperature (Tg). Present study provides detailed explanation on effect of different parameters on the bending of SMPC beam for large strain over a broad span of temperature from 273-373K, which encompasses glass transition region of SMPC.
