  • In this study, We evaluated the efficiency of the smart ventilation system being developed at the test-bed(KCL). Smart ventilation system improve the indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide. It is reducing the infusion of outside air can be reduced to minimum energy consumption. To evaluate the energy savings and carbon dioxide removal efficiency. It was more effective when working with air conditioning and ventilation system at the same time.

  • The Carbon Dioxide is the gas, which causes green house effects, unusual changes in the weather, destruction of the life. Almost every nation in the world is trying to search the countermeasure to this poisonous gas. I synthesized $Fe_3O_4$ and NaOH, in order to decompose the Carbon Dioxide. Among the particles synthesizing $Fe_3O_4$, I chose the equivalent ratio 1.00 which can decompose the Carbon Dioxide best, and fixed that equivalent ratio and added the 0.005-3.00 mole percentage of NiCl$_2$ and synthesized $Fe_3O_4$. I studied the decomposition of the Carbon Dioxide and methanized reaction, by measuring its crystal structure, thermochemistrical character and specific surface area. In decomposing the Carbon Dioxide, I used oxygen-deficit Magnetite which I produced by injecting the hydrogen gas into the synthesized sample. I observed the methanization reaction by raising the temperature of sample up to 650$\circ$C and having it reacted with the hydrogen gas. The decomposition of the Carbon Dioxide was added 0.005, 0.03, 0.05 mole percentage of NiCl$_2$ was more effective than pure $Fe_3O_4$. All sample in which the decomposition of the Carbon Dioxide took place produced the methane gas.

Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide Concentrations in a Layer House

  • Higher concentrations of ammonia ($NH_3$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in animal barns can negatively affect production and health of animals and workers. This paper focuses on measurements of summer concentrations of ammonia ($NH_3$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in a naturally ventilated laying henhouse located at an egg production facility in Bursa region, western Turkey. Also, indoor and ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity were measured simultaneously with pollutant gas concentrations. The average $NH_3$ concentrations during summer of 2013 was 8.05 ppm for exhaust and 5.42 ppm for inlet while average $CO_2$ concentration was 732 ppm for exhaust and 625 ppm for inlet throughout summer. The overall minimum, average and maximum values and humidity were obtained as $16.8^{\circ}C$, $24.72^{\circ}C$, and $34.71^{\circ}C$ for indoor temperature and 33.64%, 63.71%, and 86.18% for relative humidity. The lowest exhaust concentrations for $NH_3$ and $CO_2$ were 6.98 ppm and 609 ppm, respectively. They were measured in early morning at the maximum diurnal ventilation rate in July 2013 and August 2013. The highest concentrations were 10.58 ppm for $NH_3$ and 904 ppm for $CO_2$ recorded in the afternoon when the ventilation rate was the lowest in June 2013.

  • A series of laboratory experiments carried out to investigate the particle separation efficiency and flotation characteristics using $CO_2$ bubbles. The primary objective of this study was to find out the feasibility of $CO_2$ bubbles as an applicable unit of flotation process in tap-water and wastewater treatment plant. The fundamental measurements were conducted to characterize the $CO_2$ bubble from the physical viewpoint in water including bubble size distribution and rising velocity under various operational conditions. In addition, the removal efficiency of solid was experimented using the lab scale plant applied $CO_2$ bubbles, namely the dissolved carbon dioxide flotation (DCF) process. The DCF process using carbon dioxide bubble, which is an advantage as the decrease and the reuse of Green-House gas, can be a promising technology as an water treatment process. On the other hand, the further research to decrease the bubble size distribution of $CO_2$ is required to enhance the particle separation efficiency.

  • Magnetite was synthesized using $0.2M-FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_{2}O$ and 0.5 M-NaOH by air oxidation method for carbon dioxide decomposition to carbon. The carbon dioxide decomposition was successfully carried out after reduction of ${Fe_3}{O_4}$ for 2 hrs using hydrogen gas. The carbon dioxide decomposition at 325, 350, 375, 400, $425^{\circ}C$, 88% was the highest at $350^{\circ}C$ and the activation energy of ${Fe_3}{O_4}$ in carbon dioxide decomposition was 30.96 kJ/mol. After $CO_2$ decomposition, the carbon of surface of catalyst reacted with hydrogen produced methane.

Effects of Applyng Two Different Chemical Additives to the Litter on Broiler Performance and the Carbon Dioxide Gas Production in Poultry Houses (깔짚에 두 가지의 다른 화학제제를 첨가하였을 때 육계의 생산성과 계사내의 이산화탄소 가스 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of applying two different additives to the litter on broiler performance and the carbon dioxide gas production in poultry cages. In two different experiments, the carbon dioxide gas production in poultry litter used for 42 days was measured. The chemical additives were applied to the litter at a rate of 200 g aluminum chloride(A1Cl$_3$ㆍ6$H_2O$) or 200 g aluminum sulfate [Al$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ㆍ14$H_2O$, Alum] + 50 g carbon carbonate per kg litter. There was no effect on broiler performance by the litter additives, but the values of carbon dioxide gas produced from broiler litters which were treated with chemical additives were significantly lower(P < 0.05 and 0.01) than that of the control. This study showed that carbon dioxide gas production can be reduced by chemically treating the litter with A1Cl$_3$ or Alum + CaCO$_3$.

Study on the Dissolution Characteristics of Liquid $CO_2$ Released by Fixed Pipeline (고정 파이프라인에서 분사된 액체 이산화탄소 용해특성 연구)

  • The use of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gases around the world causes an increase of the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. In order to reduce the concentration of the greenhouse gas, the idea of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean is proposed to be an effective mitigation strategy to counteract potential global warming due to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth by fixed pipeline are performed. The results show that carbon dioxide droplets change to carbon dioxide bubbles in gas phase around 500m in depth, and the droplets are completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the liquide carbon dioxide is released both at 1,000 m in depth with the initial diameter of 0.007m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.011m or less.

  • In order to compare their absorption abilities of carbon dioxide, Hyamine base and phenyl ethylamine were employed in wet combustion experiments. The known content of liver lipid and uniformly mixed palmitic $acid-C^{14}$ were oxidized with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Carbon dioxide produced was trapped by the amines tested through thin tube. The amines absorbed carbon dioxide were mixed with diotal scintillator and counted by liquid scintillation counter. The counting efficiencies and radioactivity recoveries were 50 to 60 % and nearly 100 % for both amines. However, the absorption ability of carbon dioxide by phenyl ethylamine was about two times that of Hyamine base. This technique would not be necessary for the counting of liver lipid of swim, because the efficiencies were not increased and counting accuracies were similar to those of direct counting.

Crystallization and Molecular Relaxation of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Annealed in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate) was annealed at different temperature and pressure of supercritical carbon dioxide $(CO_2)$ using samples quenched from the melt. Crystallization and molecular relaxation behavior due to $CO_2-annealing$ of samples were investigated using differential scanning calorimetric and dynamic mechanical measurements. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures significantly decreased with increasing temperature and pressure of $CO_2$. The dynamic mechanical measurement of samples annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ in supercritical $CO_2$ showed three relaxation peaks, corresponding to existence of different amorphous regimes such as rigid, intermediate, and mobile domains. As a result, the mobile chains were likely to facilitate crystallization in supercritical state. It also led to the decreased modulus of $CO_2-annealed$ samples with increasing pressure.

Simulation Model for Dissolution of Liquid $CO_2$ Discharged at Intermediate Depth of Ocean (중층심해에 분사된 액체 이산화탄소 용해 예측모델 개발)

  • Carbon dioxide ocean disposal is one of the promising options to reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere because the ocean has vast capacity for carbon dioxide sequestration. However, the dissolution rate of liquid carbon dioxide in seawater must be known in advance in order to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the solubility, the surface concentration and the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth are peformed. The results show that the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1,000m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.016 or less. Also, the surface concentration of carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film is about 50% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,500 m in depth and about 60% of carbon dioxide solubility at 1,000 m in depth.
