  • The carbon composite tube can play an important role in replacing or complementing longitudinal and transverse reinforcing steels by providing ductility and strength for conventional columns. In this study, both the experimental and analytical investigations of axial behavior of large-scale square concrete columns confined by carbon composite tube are presented. The specimens are filament-wound carbon composite with 90$^{\circ}$+30$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$+45$^{\circ}$ winding angle respect to longitudinal axis of tube. The instrumented large-scale concrete-filled composite tubes(CFCT) are subjected to monotonic axial loads exerted by 10,000kN UTM. The influence of winding angle, thickness of tube on stress-strain relationships of the confined columns is identified and discussed. Proposed equations to predict both the strength and ductility of confined columns by carbon composite tube demonstrate good correlation with test data obtained from large-scale specimens.

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a composite cylindrical beam made of a mechanism of carbon dioxide absorption coated on the tube core are investigated based on the classical beam theory coupled with the modified couple stress theory. The composite tube structures are assumed to be uniform along the tube length, and the energy method regarding the Hamilton principle is utilized for generating the governing equations. A powerful numerical solution, the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), is employed to solve the differential equations. The carbon dioxide trapping mechanism is a composite consisting of a polyacrylonitrile substrate and a cross-link polydimethylsiloxane gutter layer. Methacrylate, poly (ethylene glycol), methyl ether methacrylate, and three pedant methacrylates are all taken into account as potential mechanisms for capturing carbon dioxide. The application of the present study is helpful in the design and production of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the different valuable parameters, such as the length-scale parameter, rate of section change, aspect ratio, etc., are presented in detail.

  • A powder-in-sheath rolling (PSR) process utilizing a copper alloy tube was applied to a fabrication of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum matrix composite. A copper tube with an outer diameter of 30 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm was used as a sheath material. A mixture of pure aluminum powders and CNTs with the volume contents of 1, 3, 5 vol% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then processed to 93.3% height reduction by a rolling mill. The relative density of the CNT/Al composite fabricated by the PSR decreased slightly with increasing of CNTs content, but showed high value more than 98%. The average hardness of the 5%CNT/Al composite increased more than 3 times, compared to that of unreinforced pure Al powder compaction. The hardness of the CNT/Al composites was some higher than that of the composites fabricated by PSR using SUS304 tube. Therefore, it is concluded that the type of tube affects largely on the mechanical properties of the CNT/Al composites in the PSR process.

  • Direct laser vaporization of transition-metal(Co, Ni)/graphite composite pellet produced single wall carbon naotubes(SWNT) in the condensing vapor in a heated flow cylinder-type tube furnace, Transition metal/graphite composite pellet target was made by mixing graphite, Co, and Ni in 98:1:1 atomic weight ratios, pressing the mixed powder, and curing it. The target was placed in a tube furnace maintained at 1200$^{\circ}C$ and Ar inert collision gas continuously flowed into the tube. The 2nd harmonic, 532nm wavelength light from Nd-YAG laser was used to vaporize the tube. The carbon nanotubes produced by the laser vaporization were accumulated on quartz tube wall. The raw carbon nanotube materials were purified with surfactants(Triton X-100) in a ultrasonicator. These carbon nanotubes were analyzed using SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopic method. The carbon nanotube growth on the Ni-patterned Si substrate was investigated by the CVD process. Transition-metal, Ni and CH4 gas were used as a catalyst and a reactant gas, respectively. The structure and the phonon frequencies of the carbon nanotubes formed on the patterned Si substrate were measured by SEM and Raman spectrometer.

  • In the field of composite structures, the use of carbon tube for the confinement of concrete has been arisen since 1990's. However, experimental and analytical studies were limited to those of reinforced concrete and concrete filled steel tube. The carbon tube provides excellent confinement capabilities for concrete cores, enhancing compressive strength and ductility of concrete significantly. The carbon tube has high tensile strength, light weight, corrosion immunity and high fatigue strength properties. Since carbon fiber is an anisotropic material, carbon tube could be optimized by adjusting the fiber orientation, thickness and the number of different layers. In this study, both experimental and analytical studies of axial and lateral behavior of full-scale CFCT (Concrete Filled Carbon Tube) columns subjected to monotonic axial load were carried out using Drucker-Prager theory. And, based on comparison results between experiment results and analytical results, k factor estimation was proposed for effective analysis.

  • This paper presents a study of geometric nonlinear forced vibration of carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) reinforcement composite plates on nonlinear elastic foundations. The plate is bonded with piezoelectric layers. The von Karman geometric nonlinearity assumptions with classical plate theory are employed to obtain the governing equations. The Galerkin and homotopy perturbation method (HPM) are utilized to investigate the effect of carbon nano-tubes volume fractions, large amplitude vibrations, elastic foundation parameters, piezoelectric applied voltage on frequency ratio and primary resonance. The results indicate that the carbon nano-tube volume fraction, applied voltage and elastic foundation parameters have significant effect on the hardening response of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) plates.

  • Carbon nanotube is a geometrical frame-like structure and the primary bonds between two nearest-neighboring atoms act like beam members, whereas an individual atom acts as the joint of the related beam members. The sectional property parameters of these beam members are obtained from molecular mechanics. Computations of the elastic deformation of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveal that the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes vary with the tube diameter and are affected by their helicity. With increasing tube diameter, the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes approach the Young's modulus of graphite.

  • A powder-in-sheath rolling method is applied to the fabrication of a carbon nano tube (CNT) reinforced copper composite. A copper tube with outer diameter of 30 mm and wall thickness of 2 mm is used as sheath material. A mixture of pure copper powder and CNTs with a volume content of 3 % is filled in a tube by tap filling and then processed to an 93.3 % reduction using multi-pass rolling after heating for 0.5 h at 400 ℃. The specimen is then sintered for 1h at 500 ℃. The relative density of the 3 vol%CNT/Cu composite fabricated using powder in sheath rolling is 98 %, while that of the Cu powder compact is 99 %. The microstructure is somewhat heterogeneous in width direction in the composite, but is relatively homogeneous in the Cu powder compact. The hardness distribution is also ununiform in the width direction for the composite. The average hardness of the composites is higher by 8Hv than that of Cu powder compact. The tensile strength of the composite is 280 MPa, which is 20 MPa higher than that of the Cu powder compact. It is concluded that the powder in sheath rolling method is an effective process for fabrication of sound CNT reinforced Cu matrix composites.

  • A powder-in-sheath rolling method was applied to a fabrication of a carbon nano tube (CNT) reinforced aluminum composite. A STS304 tube with an outer diameter of 34 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm was used as a sheath material. A mixture of pure aluminum powders and CNTs with the volume contents of 1, 3, 5 vol was filled in the tube by tap filling and then processed to 73.5% height reduction by a rolling mill. The relative density of the CNT/Al composite fabricated by the powder-in-sheath rolling decreased slightly with increasing of CNTs content, but exhibited high value more than 98. The grain size of the aluminum matrix was largely decreased with addition of CNTs; it decreased from $24{\mu}m$ to $0.9{\mu}m$ by the addition of only 1 volCNT. The average hardness of the composites increased by approximately 3 times with the addition of CNTs, comparing to that of unreinforced pure aluminum. It is concluded that the powder-in-sheath rolling method is an effective process for fabrication of CNT reinforced Al matrix composites.

  • In this study, axial and lateral loading experiments for both circular and square plain concrete columns confined with carbon fiber tube manufactured by carbon filament winding technique were performed. Based on the test results, reliability analyses to estimate strength reduction factors were carried out by utilizing Monte Carlo technique. CASE I was for plain concrete columns confined with the carbon tubes, CASE II was for reinforced concrete columns confined with the carbon tubes. As results, the strength reduction factors, ${\phi}$, were estimated as 0.7 for CASE I and 0.85 for CASE II respectively.
