  • Nanocomposite films were prepared by casting the solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and single wall nanotube (SWNT) in nitric acid subsequent to sonication. Even though SWNT shows good dispersion visually, the reinforcing effect was not satisfactory. The G-band Raman spectra of the drawn film clearly demonstrated that SWNTs in the film are well-oriented along the drawing axis of the film. The electrical resistivity of the film prepared using nitric acid was lower than that of the film using DMF. Thus, nitric acid is presumably more effective in dispersing nanotubes than DMF.

  • Ni-CNT(Carbon Nanotubes) composite coating is often used for the surface treatment of mechanical/electronic devices to improve the properties of the Ni coating. For the Ni-CNT coating, the dispersion of CNT fibers is a critical process. In this study, ultrasonic treatment instead of the conventional ball milling was attempted as a dispersion method for the electroless Ni-CNT coating. SEM-EDX analysis was performed and contact angle, sheet resistance, and micro-hardness were measured. Results showed that the ultrasonic treatment was comparable to the ball milling, as a dispersion method, but the difference was negligible. However, combined ball milling and ultrasonic treatment(double treatment) showed much improved micro-hardness value, above 350Hv(close to the value obtained by the Ni-CNT electroplating). In addition, electroless Ni-CNT(double-treated) coatings formed on the thin Ni film deposited by the electroless plating(double coating) showed better mechanical properties. Thus, double treatment and double coating are suggested as an improved electroless Ni-CNT coating method.

  • n-Octyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, and octadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride were synthesized to be used as the accelerating weight loss agent. These synthesized compounds were used for the weight loss treatment of PET textile with sodium hydroxide. From the treatments, it was found that the lower carbon number of high alkyl group existed in quaternary ammonium salts, the better effect of weight loss was acquired. The proper concentration of accelerating weight loss agent was $8{\sim}10g/l$, the proper treatment time was $60{\sim}90$ minutes, the proper treating bath ratio was 1 : 50. It is proved that n-octyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride are good accelerating weight loss agent.

  • The main purpose of this study is to develop a Sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing carbon or glass shot fibers and the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the Sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In this study, a series of experiments are carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear concret beams strengthened with the Sprayed FRP method. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens are similar, compared to those of the FRP sheet.

  • Bola-form electrolytes were synthesized by the reaction of pyridine with 1, 4-dibromobutane or 1, 10-dibromodecane, respectively. The effects of these electrolytes were studied in the dyeing of wool fabric with Orange II. The depth of shade of wool fabric with pretreated electrolyte were independent to the dyeing temperature and higher than those of one untreated. In the case of pretreating the electrolytes, there are no differences in the effects in dyeing behaviors between the 1, 4-dipyridiniumbutane and 1, 10-dipyridiniumdecane. But when the wool fabrics were dyed in water containing these electrolytes, dyeing behaviors were different to the numbers of carbon atom in electrolytes. 1, 4-dipyridiniumbutane has positive effects on the dyeing.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the compressive strength of small scale concentrically axially loaded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confined plain concrete columns, with cylinder concrete strength 19 MPa. For columns with circular (150-mm diameter) and square (150-mm side) cross sections wrapped with glass- and carbon-FRP sheets (GFRP and CFRP, respectively) applied with dry lay-up the effect of different jacket schemes and different overlap configurations on the confined characteristics is investigated. Test results indicate that the most cost effective jacket configuration among those tested is for one layer of CFRP, for both types of sections. In square sections the location of the lap length, either in the corner or along the side, does not seem to affect the confined performance. Furthermore, in circular sections, the presence of an extra wrap with FRP fibers parallel to the column's axis enhances the concrete strength proportionally to the axial rigidity of the FRP jacket. The recorded strains and the distributions of lateral confining pressures are discussed. Existing design equations are used to assess the lateral confining stresses and the confined concrete strength making use of the measured hoop strains.

  • In general solid propulsion offers cost effective, large thrust capabilities comparing to the liquid propulsion which offers high specific impulse and restart capabilities. Therefore solid propulsion is well fitted for the first stage and boosters. BBL approach has been studied for the launch vehicle because of cost effectiveness, limited development time and low risk. Using of the carbon fiber epoxy resin in the solid rocket motor case is expanded, and specially high strength fibers are more attracted since its inert mass reduction.

  • Biochar is a novel carbon based material derived from waste that shows promising properties for several applications. In this paper we investigate its potential use as a low cost, greener alternative to commonly used aggregates employed to enhance the neutron shielding performance of concrete. Monte Carlo simulations are performed with the PHITS code to estimate the neutron attenuation of blank and biochar-reinforced concrete exposed to high energy neutrons. We find that the shielding performance of concrete with 15% biochar is comparable with commonly used materials such as Boron Carbide at 20% and exceeds that of Basalt fibers with the same concentration, making these composites an interesting greener alternative to current solutions. A combination of biochar and heavier fillers also show extremely promising performance.

  • This paper is devoted to the presentation of a numerical study on vibration behavior of composite panels reinforced by glass fibres and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) subjected to thermal environments. The effect of temperature variation has been included as thermal load acting on in-plane direction of the panel. To model the composite material, a micromechanical model which contains random dispersion of nanotubes and single-direction fibers has been selected. The geometry of the panel has been considered to have a single curveture along its width. Based on the above assumptions, the governing equations have been derived by using thin shell theory capturing the panel curveture and also nonlinear deflections. Finally, the panel dependence on various factors such as the curveture, nanotube amount, fiber volume, fiber direction and temperature variation has been researched.

  • The removal efficiencies of silver-ACFs were associated with their surface properties such as surface area, porosity, and the electro-chemical reaction time for the silver treatments. X-ray diffraction patterns of fibers electrochemically treated with silver display diffraction peaks for metallic silver and kinds of silver chloride complexes on the fiber surface after electrochemical adsorption. The results of SEM and EDX indicate that surface reaction motive of silver-ACF prepared by electrochemical reaction are depend on time function for the chloride ion removal efficiency. Finally, Cl ion adsorbed by the silver-ACFs from the ICP analysis seems to show an excellent removal effect.
