For the production of diglyceride (DG) containing medium chain fatty acid, which could be utilized as a substrate to structured lipid production, monoglyceride (MG) and caprylic acid were reacted in the presence of lipase. The reaction system was well mixed homogeneously without using any organic solvent. Among the lipases investigated, Lipozyme RM IM and Novozym 435 were selected on the basis of equilibrium DG yields from the medium chain fatty acid and MG. And reaction conditions such as addition of molecular sieve, water content of immobilized lipase, reaction temperature, and mole ratio of MG/caprylic acid are optimized to increase DG production by using Lipozyme RM IM. DG content of reaction mixture showed 8% increase by adding molecular sieve to reaction mixture. Removal of water from the immobilized lipase could affect seriously equilibrium content of DG. More than 2.8%(w/w) removal of water from the support could make 44% of DG. Optimum temperature was found to $60^{\circ}C$. Temperature shift from $60^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ resulted in increase of free fatty acid (FFA) content. The equilibrium DG yield was not seriously affected by on MG/caprylic acid molar ratio. However, at the stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 the highest DG yield was obtained. Increasing MG/caprylic acid ratio from 0.3 to 1.8 decreased FFA content from 34% to 13%, while MG content increased from 27% to 50%.
As one of the hydrometallurgical processes available in the recycling of silver-bearing wastes, the preparation of Ag nano-powder was investigated by a reductive precipitation reaction in silver solution using sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate and ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. Silver solution was prepared by dissolving silver nitrate with distilled water, and Tamol NN8906, PVP, SDS and caprylic acid were also used respectively as the dispersant to avoid the agglomeration of particles during the reductive reaction. Ag particles obtained from the reduction reaction from silver solution were characterized using the particle size analyzer and TEM to determine the particle size distribution and morphology. It was found that about $40\%$ excess of sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate was required to reduce completely silver ions in the solution. It alto appeared that the particle size generated with sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate was much greater than that with ascorbic acid. As far as the effect of dispersant on the Ag particles was concerned, the particle size distribution showed typically bimodal distribution in case of Tamol/FVP while very broad distribution ranged from 0.01 to $100{\mu}m$ appeared in case of SDS/caprylic acid.
Vanillyl alcohol (VA), which is abundant in Vanilla bean, has strong antioxidant activity. However, the use of VA in the food and cosmetics industries is limited, due to its low solubility in emulsion or organic solvents. Meanwhile, medium chain fatty acids and medium chain monoglycerides have antibacterial activity. We synthesized butyric acid vanillyl ester (BAVE) or caprylic acid vanillyl ester (CAVE) from VA with tributyrin or tricaprylin through transesterification reaction using immobilized lipases. BAVE and CAVE scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals in organic solvents. In addition, BAVE and CAVE decreased the production rate of conjugated diene and triene in the menhaden oil-in-water emulsion system. While BAVE showed no antibacterial activity, CAVE showed antibacterial activity against food spoilage bacteria, including Bacillus coagulans. In this study, the antibacterial activity of vanillyl ester with medium chain fatty acid was first revealed. Zeta potential measurements confirmed that BAVE and CAVE were inserted into B. coagulans membrane. In addition, the propidium iodide uptake assay and fluorescent microscopy showed that CAVE increased B. coagulans membrane permeability. Therefore, CAVE is expected to play an important role in the food and cosmetics industries as a bi-functional material with both antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

Objectives: Antivenom serums have been used extensively for over a century and are the only effective treatment option for snake bites and other dangerous animal envenomations. In therapeutic serum centers, a wide range of antivenoms is made from animal serum, mainly equine and sheep, that are immunized with single or multiple venoms. This work aimed to use caprylic acid (CA) to purify therapeutic snake antivenom. Methods: Plasma was obtained from equine immunized with a mixture of venoms. Immunized plasma was obtained by precipitation of different concentrations (2-5%) of CA. This methodology was compared to that based on ammonium sulfate (AS) precipitation. Sediment plasma proteins were purified by ion-exchange chromatography. Protein assay, SDSPAGE, and agar gel diffusion were performed. Results: The total protein precipitation with AS was higher than precipitation with CA, but the best results were obtained when CA was added to the plasma until a final CA concentration of 5% was reached. Chromatography and electrophoresis indicated a stronger band for the 5% CA, and the gel diffusion assay showed antigen-antibody interaction in the purified serum. Conclusion: The use of CA compared to the routine method for purifying hyperimmune serums is a practical and cost-effective method for preparing and producing therapeutic serums. It constitutes a potentially valuable technology for alleviating the critical shortage of antivenom in Iran.
The anticancer and antioxidant effect of different lengths of saturated fatty acids was tested on NIH3T3 fibroblasts and human skin melanoma cellsn in this study. The cell existence rate and antioxidizing capacity and optic reservation of cells were observed. This saturated fatty acid was concentration-dependent. IC50 Concentrations in NIH3T3 fibroblasts, human skin melanoma cells and DPPH radical scavenging activity of fatty acid was increasing the order of carbochain length ; caprylic acid < lauric acid < palmitic acid < stearic acid. The reduction in cell number and morphological change in human skin melanoma cells was increasing the order of carbochain length ; caprylic acid < lauric acid < palmitic acid < stearic acid. These results suggest that carbochain length of fatty acid can be used as structure-activity relationships for anticancer and antioxidant.
The fatty acid compositions of cow's and human milk fats of Korea were compared by Gas-Liquid Chromatography(GLC) and general chemical compositions of their milks were also analyzed. Some similarities between human and cow's milk fatty acids were found. Human milk contained little butyric, caproic and caprylic acid were rich in linoleic acid. Cow's milk contained short chain fatty acids. Methylesters of the fatty acids were prepared by methanolysis.

The transformer is a static electrical device that transfers energy by inductive coupling. Then, heat is occurred at coils, inner transformer was filled with insulating oils for cooling and insulation. Although mineral oil as insulating oil has been widely used, it does not meet health and current environmental laws because it is not biodegradable. Therefore, in this study, the diglycerol ester was synthesized with diglycerol and fatty acids (oleic acid and caprylic acid) over various catalysts for insulating oil having biodegradability, high flash points and low pour points. The sulfated zirconia ($SO_4{^{2-}}/ZrO_2$) catalyst prepared at different calcination temperature shows the highest conversion of fatty acids at $600^{\circ}C$ due to crystallinity and high density of acid sites per surface area. When the molar ratio of oleic acid and caprylic acid is 1:3, the diglycerol ester shows superior insulation properties that are the flash point of $306^{\circ}C$ and pour point of $-50^{\circ}C$. The insulation properties of synthesized diglycerol ester shows the pour point of $-50^{\circ}C$ and the flash point of over $300^{\circ}C$. Therefore, diglycerol ester is superior to the vegetable oils in insulation properties.
