  • Subject matter of international trade are various. They contain not only tangible assets such as goods but also intangible assets including service, technology, and capital etc. Technology, a creation of the human intellect, is important as it is the main creative power to produce goods. It can be divided into Patent, Trademark, Know-how and so on. These Technologies are protected by the national and international laws on regulations for the Intellectual Property Rights(IPR), since technology development is needed a lot of time and effort, and the owner of the technology may have crucial benefits for creating and delivering better goods and services to users and customers. Therefore, any licensee who wants to use the technology which other person(licensor) owns, he(the licensee) and the original owner(the licensor) shall make Technology Transfer Contract. Differently from the International Sales Contract in which seller provides the proprietary rights of goods for buyer, in the case of International Transfer of Technology Contract, the licensor doesn't provide proprietary rights of technologies with the licensee, on the contrary the right of using is only allowed during the contract. The purpose of this paper is to examine the main issues in International Transfer of Technology Contract. This author focused on the main obligations of both parties, namely licensor's obligation to provide the technology and licensee's obligation to pay the royalty. As every country has different local mandatory laws about Intellectual Property Rights(IPR) and these mandatory rules and laws prevails over the contract, the related rules and laws should be examined carefully by both parties in advance. Especially the rules and laws about the competition limitation in the local country of licensee and the economic union(like the EU) should be checked before contracting. In addition, the contract has much more complicate and delicate aspects than other international business contracts, so both parties should review carefully before singing the contract.

  • While dramatic shifts in the media environment underscore the emerging importance of structural approaches in media studies. political economists in Korea have failed to meet such demands. It is particularly noteworthy that their most serious weakness lies in economic theories. This paper aims to examine major problems in political economic approaches in Korea and suggest some research agenda and directions for the future. Above all, political economists need to scrutinize and elaborate both microscopic and macroscopic frameworks. On the microscopic level, they may learn tremendous implications from the "audience-commodity" thesis and recent debates on "information goods" among Korean economists. For the more macroscopic part, it is urgently needed to delve into mid-level issues that may illuminate specific ways the media capital operates: trends in the accumulation of capital, the influence of technological innovation, changes in the labor process, and the relations among production, circulation and consumption sectors.

  • This paper is to set up the empirical model in order to estimate industrial markup and to analyze the determinants for industrial markup by estimating the factor price elasticities of markup in the Korean manufacturing industries using the autoregressive distributed model. The import price elasticities of markup were estimated to be -1.025, -0.176, and -0.260 respectively in Machinery products, Chemical products, and Metallics which proved to have higher ratios of imported intermediate goods to industrial output. The interest elasticities of markup were also estimated to be -0.165, -0.147, and -0.210 respectively in Chemical products, Metallics, and Machinery products which are capital-intensive industries. Thus, the paper suggests that both import price index and interest rate have had more decisive effects on the changes in industrial markup in the Korean manufacturing industries, in particular, since the foreign currency crisis beginning in late 1997.

  • Busan Port which is the representative social overhead capital facilities for international trade of goods has been the driving force for economic development in Korea. Therefore, the central government should play the major role in building a rear road to Busan Port in order that it may function as a mojor port of Northeastern Asia through the systemization of mutual assistance among connected facilities, completely equipped with port-related facilities befitting to the principal port of imports and exports. In this study, the validity of container tax is being examined, analyzing container tax which Is considered as an obstacle to the development of Busan Port and its purpose, and grasping the present conditions by the realistic speculation on container tax issues and its abolition. First, the port rear road as a social overhead capital facilities, which connects port and expressway, should be considered as part of port, and port is social overhead capital invested by government. Second, the susan City imposes on container tax. As a result, a shipper and a shipping company are paying a double charge by paying container tax with port dues. Third, someone argues that port rear road is constructed as container truck generates much traffic, but it is unreasonable to conclude that container truck is seed of traffic jam because according to traffic survey of Busan City, container truck occupies only 1.45% of total traffic Forth, it has bad influence upon the competitiveness of Busan Port as Northeastern logistics base, as other ports who are competing with Busan Port like Singapore. Hong kong, Kobe make their competitiveness strong by decreasing the cost of pore dues

  • The infrastructure in korea has been improved drastically since July 7th, 1970 which was the first highway completed date in Korea (Seoul-Pusan). This is one of the major factors for the competitiveness of a country. Now the total length of highway in Korea is more than 2000km. However Korea is 11th in the trade volume in the world, the SOC level of Korea is around 20th at most in the world (IMD 2004). The infrastructure in Korea comparing other developed countries is far below, which gives the impact of cost of goods, even twice expensive in transporting goods through highways, railways and ports etc. Now the government budget is gradually spending more for welfare and health care side. The most of additional expense of welfare is increasing rather than SOC budget is decreasing or staying as it is as 2003. The government may think that the level of SOC is enough in point of view of preference input of budget such as welfare and health care etc. However the SOC level in Korea is far form the competitiveness of the country. The main points of this paper is to show that where Korea is in point of SOC level to go for developed country, and what to do to facilitate BOT, BTO and BTL projects. Korean government has tried to improve the practice of PPI (Private Participation of Infrastructure) with the Act on Private Capital Inducement in 1994 and the Act on Private Investment in 1997.

  • Production of goods and services always necessarily depends on the use of knowledge. The knowledge intensity of production , however, has increased manifold in the last two decades or so. This is clearly indicated by the rise in the share of knowledge intensive products, which are traded. The production and export of these advanced products are not confined to developed countries alone, but also among developing countries. But in the latter there is considerable concentration of it in a handful of countries primarily in the Asian region. Knowledge underlying production, whether industrial or non-industrial, embodies two types of knowledge: formal and non-formal. In this paper we are entirely concerned with the financing of the creation of formalized knowledge in the context of two similar Asian developing countries, namely Singapore and Malaysia. Three broad types of financial instruments are considered: research grants, tax incentives and venture capital. Both the countries are shown to be having very similar financial instruments for promoting innovation. The timing of these instruments is quite similar too. But one country has performed much better than the other. The main argument of the paper is that while financial instruments are a necessary input for innovation, the sufficient condition lies in the supply of a sufficient quantity of scientists and engineers.

  • This study analyzed the structure of imported fisheries, focusing especially on the following factors of live fisheries import : First of all, it is confirmed that the import of live fisheries expands when domestic production decreases. To put it concretely, the structure of domestic live fish supply is based upon the production of aquaculture, the shift from export to domestic use, and imported live fisheries. These all coexist, expand, and grow together. Secondly, the structure of the consumer's market - the background of expanding and growing live fisheries-is currently diversifying with quality and quantity from a local area consumer system based upon regional markets, to a wider ranged system based upon the food industry and retailing market. The existence of the consumer markets is premised upon a stable supply structure, in terms of material and price. Thirdly, in terms of trade policy, control of imports instantly reduces import goods. But it is reasonable to say that there is not any logical effectiveness of denying the stable growth of low market capital under the background of strong consummer expansion. Fourthly, the attitude of the import related managener organization is directly related to the degree to which it is connected to live fish import. It is demanded that such a managing organization possess suitable facilities, specializaed knowledge, and management skill of live fisheries. So it is predicted that newly introducing the importing of live fisheries is not simple. It indirectly shows that the capital which relates to live fisheries are connected with the importing og live fish fisheries.
