It is well known that the water infiltration rate depends on soil properties such as soil water content, water head, capillary suction, density, hydraulic conductivity, and porosity. However, most of proposed infiltration models assume that the air phase is continuous and in equilibrium with the atmosphere or air compression and air entrapment on infiltration was not considered. This study presents experimental results on unsaturated water infiltration to relate air entrapment and hydraulic conductivity function based on soil air properties. The objectives of this study were to measure change of soil air pressure ahead of wetting front under air drain and air confined condition to find the confined air effect on infiltration rate, to reduce the entrapped air volume related with soil air pressure to increase the soil permeability, and to make a basis of infiltration process model for the purpose of improvement of infiltration rate in the homogeneous soil column. The results of the work show that soil air pressure increases according to increasement of the saturated soil depth rather than the wetting front depth during infiltration process.
An efficient analytical method was devised for the accurate L-muscone assay in aqueous samples. It involves solid-phase extraction of L-muscone in adsorption mode using XAD-4 as the sorbent and dichloromethane modified with 10% (v/v) methanol as the eluting solvent. The gas chromatographic analysis of the eluate residue dissolved in toluene on a DB-5MS capillary column provided complete resolution of L-muscone from the co-extracted interferences. The overall method showed excellent linearity ($r^2{\geq}$ 0.9994) in the range of 0.1 to 2.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL with good intra- and inter-day precisions (% RSD = 2.5~7.3) and with high extraction recovery rates ($\geq$ 98.1 %). When the present method was applied to a L-muscone herbal drink product, the within-batch RE (%) in the labeled concentration (1.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) for the three randomly chosen bottles were -2.4, -1.3 and -3.3 with high precision (% RSD $\leq$ 3.1). The present method is considered to be suitable for quality control evaluation on liquid drinks and other complex formulations fortified with L-muscone.
This study was conducted to examine the development of a new anti-inflammatory substance with potent anti-inflammatory activities that was derived from the Platycodi Radix butanol fraction. To accomplish this, the chemical structures and anti-inflammatory activities of the components were elucidated. Upon column chromatography of the tertiary subfraction, fractions 8-4-1 and 8-4-2 were identified as platycodin D and D3, respectively, following recrystallization, based on melting point (MP), infrared (IR), and positive fast atom bombardment (FAB)-mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral data. Platycodin D and D3 exhibited strong anti-inflammatory activities in rats when administerd at oral doses of 12 mg/kg and 36 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. Platycodin D and D3 induced inhibitory effects on capillary vascular permeability in rats at oral doses of 16 mg/kg and 24 mg/kg, p.o., respectively, and potent inhibition of leukocyte emigration in a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-pouch when administered at doses of 3 mg/rat and 7 mg/rat, s.c., respectively. These results verified the high antiinflammatory potency of the platycodin D and D3 components in Platycodi Radix.

Parched mugwort tea was manufactured from mugwort (Artemisia asicatica nakai) leaves by traditional green tea preparation method. Volatile flavor compounds were collected by Tenax GC and they separated on DB-5 capillary column ($60m\;\times\;0.25mm$ i.d.) Fifty eight compounds were isolated and identified by GC-MS from the volatiles. Eleven compounds incucluding benzaldehyde, pinene, myrcene, cineole, 2-phrrolidinonoe, camphor, thujong, 1-acetylpiperidine, caryophyllene, coumarin, and farnesol among the compounds identified were considered as important compounds contributing mugwort-like flavor to the parched mugwort tea. The mixture of these eleven authentic compounds could reproduce aroma of mugwort leaves harvested in April. As results, the concentrations of these eleven flavor compounds in parched mugwort tea may indicate the strength of mugwort-like aroma of the tea.
The convenient determination of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) for a commercially available dietary supplement was developed using gas chromatography (GC)-flame ionization detector (FID). Chromatography was performed on a capillary column ($0.32mm\;I.D{\times}30m$, $0.25{\mu}m$) coated with dimethylpolysiloxane using diethylene glycol methyl ether as an internal standard. The performance characteristics of GC were evaluated in terms of selectivity, linearity, precision, accuracy, recovery, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ). The calibration curve was highly linear (the coefficient of determination: 0.9979) within the concentration range of $10.0{\sim}800.0{\mu}g/mL$ for MSM. The recoveries for three fortified concentrations were 96.7~97.1%, 96.6~97.3% and 96.8~97.2%, respectively. The LOD and LOQ of the method were $0.29{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.97{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. All obtained results were acceptable according to the guidelines of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists for dietary supplements. Thus, the validated analytical method using the GC-FID system is suitable for the determination of MSM in dietary supplement formulations for quality control.
Bretylium tosylate is a quaternary ammonium compound used for the treatment of ventricular fibrilation in humans. It is advantageous to other cationic compound in the study of biliary excretion in that negligible amount is bound to plasma protein and metabolite is not likely is to be formed. Some researchers reported that the formation of ion-pair complex caused to increase the lipothilicity of cationic compound. The partition of bretylium between water and organic phase was increased with the addition of sodium taurodeoxycholate. Also sensitive gas chromatographical assay procedure using flame ionization detector was studied. This procedure can detect as low as 0.1 mg/ml using 0.1 ml biological sample, but contamination by previous injection is the major problem of this method.
TEN-STORIED STONE PAGODA ON THE SITE OFWON-GAKSA(Temple) which is one of three marble pagodas in South Korea, were dated from the thirteenth year of the reign of King Sejo(1467). On the roof and surface of each the stories, there were large amount of the contaminants such as pigeon′s excretions, dust and environmental elements for a long time. The pH of contaminants is not acid, but is 7.2, neutral. To find the species of organic acidscontained in the contaminants and the degree of damaging for a marble pagoda, we analyzed the contaminants using GC-MSD method by the following procedures. Organic acids were extracted by saponifying whole contaminants. After Saponification, the organic acids were mathylated to increase their volatility upon subsequent GC-MSD analysis. The mathyl esters of the organic acids are extracted from the acidified aqueous solution. And the organic extracts were washed with adilute base solution. The washed extract were analyzed by GC(Hewlett Packard 5890)with a nonpolar capillary column(Crosslinked 5% Ph Me Silicone, $50×0.2㎜×0.33\mum$film thickness, USA) and Mass Spectrometric Detector(Hewlett Packard 5970B).As the result, it was found that 12 organic acids were the main compound in pagoda′contaminants, and the amount of organic acid were negligible.
We examined a dermal pharmacokinetics for a new SYC-fentanyl patch in rabbits. Determination of fentanyl in the plasma was performed using a gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection system and a capillary column. One patch per animal (fentanyl 2.5 mg) was applied to clipped back skin for 72 hours. The plasma fentanyl concentration profile of SYC-patch was similar to that of a conventional patch (Durogesi $c^{R}$, Janssen Co.). No significant difference was observed in the pharmacokinetic parameters, the area under the concentration-time curve (AU $C^{0-}$72hrs/) and the total area under the first moment-time curve (AUM $C^{0-}$7hrs/), between the two patch types. The AU $C^{0-}$7hrs/ and AUM $C^{0-}$72hrs/ of durogesi $c^{R}$ were 183.3$\pm$46.28 ng*hr/ml and 6,450$\pm$1,939ng*h$r^2$/ml, and those of SYC-fentany patch were 217.2$\pm$50.51$\pm$ng*hr/ml and 8,022$\pm$2,245ng*h$r^2$/ml, respectively (n=3). This result indicates that the new SYC patch has a similar bioavailability compared to durogesi $c^{R}$ patch. Therefore, the SYC-patch may be considered as a bioequivalent fentanyl patch.patch.tch.

The elution patterns of seventeen 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDDs/Fs and 12 dioxin-like PCBs were studied by both manual open columns and automatic parallel LC columns in cleanup procedure. PCDDs/Fs and non-ortho-PCBs from other mono-ortho-PCBs were separated on automatic LC column, whereas they were not separated on an open manual column. The elution study on two cleanup methods was carried out using the PAR solution of unlabeled congeners and checked the recovery of each congener. Total recoveries of cleanup fractionation were ranged between 61.9 ~ 96.0% for PCDDs/Fs and 70.4 ~ 79.0% for PCBs by manual open columns and 71.8 ~ 104.5% for PCDDs/Fs and 61.3-120.3% for PCBs by automatic parallel LC columns, respectively. Unfortunately, #169-HxCB and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD were not separated on DB-5MS capillary column. The ions of 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD were selected at M/M+2 instead of M+2/M+4 suggested by EPA method 1613. It is possible to discriminate 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD and PCB #169 in HRGC/HRMS analysis.

Volatile flavor components of Codonopsis lanceolata were extracted by gas co-distillation (GCD), solvent extraction/fractionation (SEF), and headspace sampling (HSS) methods. The extracts were analyzed by dual-capillary gas chromatography-retention index (GC-RI) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). The two extracts prepared by SEF and HSS gave more similar fragrance to the Codonopsis lanceolata than the GCD extract. The GC profiles of the SEF and HSS extracts were similar to each other except for differences in peak areas. The extract prepared by SEF gave a sweet note while the extract prepared by HSS gave a green note. The GCD extract began to give a burnt note of herb medicine with prolonged distillation. Rapid extraction of flavor components from Codonopsis lanceolata was possible in several short steps by SEF and HSS methods compared to GCD. GC-MS and GC-RI were used for peak identification. GC-RI was more effective for identification of isomers, and polar FFAP column was more suitable for identification of polar compounds. From Codonopsis lanceolata we identified 35 volatile flavor constituents, 24 of which have not been previously reported by simultaneous distillation extraction method $^{(5)}$. trans-2-Hexanal, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, trans-2-hexen-1-ol, and hexanol were considered key components of the green note and 1-octen-3-ol, the component of the fresh note. Esters, including amyl propionate, seem to be responsible for the sweet note particular to Codonopsis lanceolata.
