  • Various types of coatings have been developed for use as reinforcement in concrete and to resist chloride environment. The most commonly used coatings are inhibited and sealed cement slurry coating, cement polymer compositing coating and epoxy coating. Cement slurry offers passive protection, epoxy coating offers barrier protection whereas polymer coating offers both passive protection and barrier protection. Moreover, damage during handling of the steel may result in disbondment of the epoxy coating, which would increase the risk of localized corrosion. In the present study, inhibiting technique was used to increase the calcium hydroxide content at the interface up to 20%. Calcium hydroxide provides a high buffering capacity that resists a local fall in pH and thus maintains the alkaline environment necessary to prevent chloride corrosion. This study examines the use of a calcium hydroxide coating on the steel surface to enhance the pH buffering capacity of steel-concrete interface. Finally, the chloride threshold level (CTL) of polymer inhibitive coating calcium hydroxide is evaluated.

  • In this paper, the prioritized queueing handoff scheme in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cellular system is proposed. Also, the analytical survey for the proposed scheme is carried out, and the performance of this scheme is compared with that of non prioritized scheme and FIFO (First In First Out) queue scheme by computer simulation. The handoff region is defined as the time between the handoff treshold and the receiver threshold, and it is used for the maximum queue waiting time in the proposed scheme. The handoff and the receiver thresholds are defined as rewpectively: 1) the time that the Pilot Strength Measurement Message in the neighbor in the neighbor cell is received to the BS (Base Station) under the T_ADD threshold; and 2) the time that the T_DROP timer is expired and the Pilot Strength Measurement Message in the current cell is received to the BS under the T_DROP threshold. The performance metrics for analyzing the proposed scheme are : 1) probability of forced termination; 2) probability of call blocking; 3) ratio of carried traffic to total offered load; 4) average queue size; 5) average handoff delay time in queue. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme maintains high performance for handoff requests at a small penalty in total system capacity.

  • Energy aware server cluster aims to reduce power consumption at maximum while keeping QoS(quality of service) as much as energy non-aware server cluster. In the existing methods of energy aware server cluster, they calculate the minimum number of active servers needed to handle current user requests and control server power mode in a fixed time interval to make only the needed servers ON. When loads change rapidly, QoS of the existing methods become degraded because they cannot increase the number of active servers so quickly. To solve this QoS problem, we classify load change situations into five types of rapid growth, growth, normal, decline, and rapid decline, and apply five different thresholds respectively in calculating the number of active servers. Also, we use a flexible scheme to adjust the above classification criterion for multi threshold, considering not only load change but also the remaining capacity of servers to handle user requests. We performed experiments with a cluster of 15 servers. A special benchmarking tool called SPECweb was used to generate load patterns with rapid change. Experimental results showed that QoS of the proposed method is improved up to the level of energy non-aware server cluster and power consumption is reduced up to about 50 percent, depending on the load pattern.

  • CAC is a very important issue in CDMA system in order to protect the required QoS(quality of service) and increase the system's capacity. In this paper, we proposed and analyzed a call admission control scheme using multiple thresholds, which can provide quick processing time and better performance. There are two effective thresholds used to decide call admission. One is the number of active users, and the other is the signal to interference ratio(SIR). If the threshold of active users are lower than the low number of users threshold, we accept the new call without any other conditions. Otherwise, we check the current SIR to guarantee the quality of our service. System then accepts the new call when the SIR satisfies system requirement. Otherwise, the call will be rejected. Multiple threshold schemes are investigated and their performance is compared with the number of user and power based CAC's. simulation results are provided to evaluate the performance.

  • Maximal cardiac output and oxygen uptake $(VO_{2max})$ were measured during treadmill exercise for seven top-class marathoners and nine non-athletes using impedance cardiograph developed by one of the authors (DW Kim). Results of this study are summarized as belows. 1) New shoes with sponge and silicon rubber attached to the soles were developed to reduce motion artifact during treadmill exercise. Ensemble everaging techneque with the developed shoes was also used to improve the measurement of stroke volume using impedance cardiography. 2) Maximal cardiac output of the athletes, 14.98 L/min, was significantly higher than that of the non-athletes, 13.46 L/min. As maximal heart rate of the marathoners is lower than that of non-athletes, stroke volume of the former is significantly larger than that of the latter. 3) $VO_{2max}$ of the marathoners, 59.38 ml/kg/min, was higher than that of the non-athletes, 40.22 ml/kg/min. At the anaerobic threshold. $VO_{2max}$ of the former was 62.3% of $VO_{2max}$ and this was significantly higher than that of the non-athletes, 57.2%, This results indicates that the marathoners have higher aerobic capacity than the non-athletes. 4) The marathoners showed larger $VO_2$ than the non-athletes at the same cardiac output, indicating that a-v $O_2$ of the former is higher than that of the latter. 5) Maximal systolic pressure of the marathoners was higher than that of the non-athletes, and so was maximal rate-pressure products. These results indicate that heart oxygen consumption rate $(hVO_2)$ of the marathoner is higher than that of the non-athletes is mainly due to higher stroke volume. And higher oxygen consumption of the marathoners is due to higher stroke volume. And higher oxygen consumption of the marathoners is due to their larger a-v $O_2$. The marathoners show both higher threshold and $VO_{2max}$. Especially, measurement of cardiac output during treadmill exercise by improved impedance cardiography is expected to contribute in study of cardiac function of athletes.

  • A wireless sensor network which is deployed in hostile environment can be easily compromised by attackers. The selective forwarding attack can jam the packet or drop a sensitive packet such as the movement of the enemy on data flow path through the compromised node. Xiao, Yu and Gao proposed the checkpoint-based multi-hop acknowledgement scheme(CHEMAS). In CHEMAS, each path node enable to be the checkpoint node according to the pre-defined probability and then can detect the area where the selective forwarding attacks is generated through the checkpoint nodes. In this scheme, the number of hops is very important because this parameter may trade off between energy conservation and detection capacity. In this paper, we used the fuzzy rule system to determine adaptive threshold value which is the number of hops for the ACK packets. In every period, the base station determines threshold value while using fuzzy logic. The energy level, the number of compromised node, and the distance to each node from base station are used to determine threshold value in fuzzy logic.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze VIRULO model, a probabilistic quantitative model, which had been developed by US Environmental Protection Agency. The model could assess the viral attenuation capacity of soil as hydrogeologic barrier using Monte Carlo simulation. The governing equations used in the model were composed of unsaturated flow equations and viral transport equations. Among the model parameters, those related to water flow for 11 soil types were from UNDODA data, and those related to 5 virus species were from the literatures. The model compared the attenuation factor with threshold of attenuation to determine the probability of failure and presented the exceedances and Monte Carlo runs as output. The analysis indicated that among 11 USDA soil types, the viral attenuation capacity of loamy sand and sand were far lower than those of clay and silt soils. Also, there were differences in the attenuation in soil among 5 viruses with poliovirus showing the highest attenuation. The viral attenuation capacity of soil decreased sharply with increasing soil water content and increased nonlinearly with increasing soil barrier length. This study indicates that VIRULO model could be considered as a useful screening tool for viral risk assessment in subsurface environment.

  • To investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation(CR) in elderly and younger patients with myocardial infarction(MI). Of the MI patients who received hospital-based CR from 2015 to 2017, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients who continued follow-up through the outpatient clinic. A total of 39 patients (20 elderly patients (${\geq}60year$($64.1{\pm}3.6$)) and 19 younger patients (< 60 year($55.6{\pm}2.3$)) was included in this study. The HIIT program was composed of 10 minutes of warm-up, 30 minutes of interval aerobic exercise, and 10 minutes of cool down. The aerobic exercise based on their initial exercise tolerance test outcome consisted of 3-minute usual intensity phase (60-70% of heart rate/VO2 reserve) and 4-minute of high-intensity phase (70-90% of heart rate/VO2 reserve). Exercise capacity was measured by exercise tests before and after hospital- based CR. Before CR, elderly group had a significantly lower exercise capacity in Exercise time, peak VO2, METs, Anaerobic threshold, VEmax, 02pulse than younger group. Both group showed similar improvement of cardiopulmonary exercise capacity after CR. And HIIT is safe and effective in elderly patients. It is considered necessary to further expansion for the participation of high intensity interval training in elderly patients.

  • Management of nutrient intakes through behavior-mordification can be important for improving exercise performance in athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nutritional counseling for improving exercise performance capability in athletes. The subjects were seven golfers and fourteen ju-do athletes from Hoseo university, and they have nor received professional hel[ from dieticians. Prior to nutritional counseling, their dietary intakes, lifestyles and dietary habits were evaluated. Nutritional counseling sessions were conducted by a trained dietician every 2-3 weeks for 3-4 month. After 5 counseling sessions, nutrient intakes, lifestyle and dietary habits were re-evaluated. Exercise performance capability was measured by maximal exercise stress test using treadmills. Individual data were assessed as quality index represents the better nutritional status. The common dietary and lifestyle problems were overeating binging, overeating, snacking and drinking alcohol prior to the nutritional counseling. After counseling sessions, the quality index of dietary habits seemed to decrease, especially in ju-do athletes, representing nutritional problems were resolved. Body fat and body mass index decreased in ju-do athletes, but not in golfers. Both athletes have shown to increase oxygen uptake at anaerobic threshold and maximal oxygen uptake status, which represents that the athletic performance capacity was improved after counseling sessions. Their respiratory quotients were decreased. In conclusion, nutritional counseling sessions over five times are an effective and efficient approach to change dietary habits to improve exercise performance capacity. Furthermore, clients can have good dietary habits and learn how to manago muscle strength by behavior modification through multiple nutritional counseling sessions. • Lithium-ion cells have become the go-to energy source across all applications; however, dendritic growth remains an issue to tackle. While there have been various research conducted and possible solutions offered, there is yet to be one that efficiently rules out the problem without, however, introducing another. This paper seeks to present a fast charging method and system to which lithium-ion batteries are charged while maintaining their lifetime. In the proposed method, various lithium cells are charged under multiple profiles. The parameters of charge profiles that inflict damage to the cell's electrodes are obtained and used as thresholds. Thus, during charging, voltage, current, and temperature are actively controlled under these thresholds. In this way, dendrite formation suppressed charging is achieved, and battery life is maintained. The fast-charging system designed, comprises of a 1.5kW charger, an inbuilt 600W battery pack, and an intelligent BMS with cell balancing technology. The system was also designed to respond to the aging of the battery to provide adequate threshold values. Among other tests conducted by KCTL, the cycle test result showed a capacity drop of only 0.68% after 500 cycles, thereby proving the life maintaining capability of the proposed method and system.
