An Improved Technique for Fault Location Estimation Considering Shunt Capacitance on Transmission Line

  • This paper presents a new two-terminal numerical algorithm for fault location estimation using the synchronized phasor in time-domain. The proposed algorithm is also based on the synchronized voltage and current phasor measured from the PMUs (Phasor Measurement Units) installed at both ends of the transmission lines. In this paper, the algorithm is given without shunt capacitance and with shunt capacitance using II -model and estimated using DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) and LES (Least Error Squares Method). The algorithm uses a very short data window and classification for real-time transmission line protection. To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the Electro-Magnetic Transient Program (EMTP) and MATLAB are used.

  • This paper presents a small capacitance measuring circuit for capacitive sensors. The proposed circuit consists of sinewave generator, detector and demodulator. Results of experiments are shown that the circuit can be able to measure small capacitance exiting in a capacitive sensor filled with a vegetable oil. The sensitivity of the circuit is from 0.4V/pF to 4V/pF and the resolution is from 0.0025 pF to 0.00025 pF.

  • A simulation on bootstrapping circuit has been performed by modelling a coaxial cable as a transmission line. It is shown that the bootstrapping circuit could be unstable due to the transmission line effect though an ideal amplifier is used. While the conventional bootstrapping circuit does not cancel the input capacitance of the input buffer, a new bootstrapping circuit that cancels input capacitance of the input buffer has been proposed. The proposed bootstrapping circuit consists of the input buffer of which gam is larger than 1 and a feedback resistor to control the loop gain. The proposed bootstrapping circuit has higher input impedance than that of the conventional circuit.

  • This paper discusses several design factors of a capacitance displacement sensor with a numerical method and several experiments and describes guide lines of the design of this type sensor. We introduce the charge density method for the analysis of this type sensor, which has feasible accuracy and efficiency. The analysis of this type sensor with the charge density method agrees with displacement sensitivity experiments of a circular plate capacitance sensor with the sensor amp based In the charge transfer principle.

  • To do breath alcohol measurement, a sensor is necessary that it can detect low alcohol gas concentration of 0.01% at least. In this work, a capacitance-type alcohol gas sensor using porous silicon layer is developed to measure low alcohol gas concentration. The sensor using porous silicon layer has some sensitivity at room temperature by very large effective surface area, but there is still much room for improvement. In this experiment, we measured the capacitance of the sensor under 254 nm UV light on the porous silicon layer, in which alcohol solution was kept in a flask at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$ by a heater. As the result, the improvement of sensitivity by illuminating UV light was observed. The increasing rate of the capacitance was shown to be double more than those measured under UV-off state. It is supposed that UV light activates response of the oriental and interfacial polarizations which have slow relaxation time for AC field.

  • The e(lect of capacitance error on the A/D conversion accuracy in the A/D converter using binary-weighted capacitor array was scruntized. Besides the Monte-Carlo method considering the inter-capacitance ratios as random variables, " correlation approach" con-sidering the correlation coefficient between capacitances is proposed in this paper. Bt was observed by the measurement of capacitances of monolithic MO5 capacitors that the correla-tion coefficient between capacitors decreases as the capacitor size incrrases. It was also verified that the parallel connection of unit capacitors and the common centroid layout scheme signi(icantly increase the inter-capacitance correlation coefficients.

Linear Correlation between Online Capacitance and Offline Biomass Measurement up to High Cell Densities in Escherichia coli Fermentations in a Pilot-Scale Pressurized Bioreactor

  • To yield high concentrations of protein expressed by genetically modified Escherichia coli, it is important that the bacterial strains are cultivated to high cell density in industrial bioprocesses. Since the expressed target protein is mostly accumulated inside the E. coli cells, the cellular product formation can be directly correlated to the bacterial biomass concentration. The typical way to determine this concentration is to sample offline. Such manual sampling, however, wastes time and is not efficient for acquiring direct feedback to control a fedbatch fermentation. An E. coli K12-derived strain was cultivated to high cell density in a pressurized stirred bioreactor on a pilot scale, by detecting biomass concentration online using a capacitance probe. This E. coli strain was grown in pure minimal medium using two carbon sources (glucose and glycerol). By applying exponential feeding profiles corresponding to a constant specific growth rate, the E. coli culture grew under carbon-limited conditions to minimize overflow metabolites. A high linearity was found between capacitance and biomass concentration, whereby up to 85 g/L dry cell weight was measured. To validate the viability of the culture, the oxygen transfer rate (OTR) was determined online, yielding maximum values of 0.69 mol/l/h and 0.98mol/l/h by using glucose and glycerol as carbon sources, respectively. Consequently, online monitoring of biomass using a capacitance probe provides direct and fast information about the viable E. coli biomass generated under aerobic fermentation conditions at elevated headspace pressures.

  • 본 연구의 주목적은 (1) 전극의 모양, 크기 및 재질, (2) 유동형태, 그리고 (3) 유전경계 (dielectric boundray)에 대한 전극의 상대적 위치 등이 캐패시턴스변환기를 이용한 기포율 측정과 유동영역 결정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 연구하는 데에 있다. 실험 결과로부터 정적인 상태하에서 annular flow와 층류계 (stratified flow system)에 대하여, 측정한 상대 캐패시턴스(relative capacitance)와 기포율과의 상관 관계를 구하였다. 그리고, 이 결과를 이론적 예측치와 비교하였다. 이 연구 결과로부터 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 즉 (1) annular flow와 stratified flow의 경우 모두 strip-type의 전극이 ring-type의 전극보다 더 민감하다. (2) 전극의 크기는 상대적 캐패시턴스 대 (1-$\alpha$)곡선에 아무런 영창을 미치지 않는다. (3)전극의 위치는 stratified flow에 대해서는 중요하나 annular flow에 대해서는 아무런 영향이 없다.

  • For measurement of dielectric constants, the commercial parallel plate electrodes system with guard-ring electrode have been widely used up to now. The capacitance derived from the parallel plate electrodes capacitor with guard-ring electrode is calculated by the equation of ($C={\epsilon}\;{\cdot}\;\frac{area\;of\;electrod}{distance\;between\;electrodes}$). Therefore, in parallel plate electrode capacitor, the diameter of the guarded electrode, the gap size between guarded electrode and guard ring, and distance between two active electrode should be measured precisely to calculate dielectric constants from the measured capacitance. Consequently their mechanical measurement uncertainties are directly contributed. Especially the air-gap between the electrodes and dielectric specimen at the system must be existed and the measurement error derived from the air-gap is impossible to evaluate as measurement uncertainties. In this study, we analyze the uncertainty of the commercial dielectric constant test cell using 3 kinds CRMs.
