  • In this paper, we consider the problem of capacitance matrix calculation for strip-line and other interconnects crossings. The problem is formulated in the spectral domain using the method of moments. Sinc-functions are employed as basis functions. Conventionally, such a formulation leads to a large, non-sparse system of linear equations in which the calculation of each of the coefficient requires the evaluation of a Fourier-Bessel integral. Such calculations are computationally very intensive. In the method proposed here, we provide simplified expressions for the coefficients in the moment method matrix. Using these simplified expressions, the coefficients can be calculated very efficiently. This leads to a fast evaluation of the capacitance matrix of the structure. Computer simulations are provided illustrating the validity of the method proposed.

  • The method of moments is applied to numerically compute the electrostatic capacitance of a parallel-plate rectangular capacitor of finite area. Each plate is discretized into 900 patches per unit area to ensure a high accuracy of computation. To further enhance computational results, the impedance matrix elements are additionally evaluated in the case that the observation patch is located above or below the source patch in the vertical direction. To examine the fringing effect at the edges of the capacitor, the normalized capacitances are computed as a function of separation distance. After these results have been verified by Palmer's formula, this method is extended to the computation of capacitances between two different size plates.

  • A numerical method is presented for determining the static charge distribution and the capacitance of a round disk capacitor. In the employed numerical scheme annular patch subdomains are introduced to reduce the matrix size and to mprove the accuracy of the numerical calculations. The method of moments is utilized to calculate the charge distribution, and the capacitance and equipotential lines are also found from the numerically computed charge distributions. To show the validity of the results the proposed method is applied to the round disk and the dielectric filled capacitor.

  • The good dispersion of nano-materials in epoxy matrix was important parameter for the reinforcement effect, and the evaluation of dispersion degree was to prove it. This work was studied to predict the dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in SiC/epoxy composites using capacitance measurement. Capacitance was defined to be the electric capacity in proportional to electron charge of the measuring section. In case of nano-SiC powders, the electron charge of SiC/epoxy composites was higher than that of neat epoxy resin. Capacitance was evaluated for each section of SiC/epoxy composites. The prediction of dispersion condition was verified by using capacitance measurement. Dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in epoxy matrix was evaluated with two different dispersion methods, i.e., sonication and stirring methods. The dispersion degree was also verified with the tensile strength correlating to capacitance.

  • A computer code for Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is developed to sense the cross sectional phase distribution of two-phase flow in the rectangular pipe in which the tomography sensor furnished by the insulated wall, electrodes, and electric field screen. The computer code had two steps for the image reconstruction. In the forward projection step, the sensitivity matrix was constructed based on the electric field calculated by the finite difference method. In the backward projection step, the sensitivity matrix and the measured capacitances were used to reconstruct the cross sectional image. Several algorithms including LBP, TR, ITR, and PLI were employed to find the proper one for the two-phase flow analysis. Since the dielectric constant of the water in two-phase flow is sensitive to the thermal parameter such as, temperature and pressure, the developed code was evaluated to find their accuracy, speed of calculation, and sensitivity to the variation of the dielectric constant. It was found that the iterative methods are superior to the direct methods for the image reconstruction, and the PLI method was the best in the variation of the dielectric constants.

  • In this paper, an efficient method is proposed to analyze the radial error of a miniaturized-high speed spindle system. Initially, a device is constructed for measuring the radial error motion using capacitance sensors. The capacitance sensors are placed perpendicular to the axis of the shaft and at 90o to each other. The spindle is rotated at high speed and the profile of the spindle is recorded. An algorithm is developed for analyzing the spindle data and determining the radial error of spindle. The present algorithm uses homogeneous transform matrix (HTM) method and iterative process for determining the radial error. The analysis procedure is performed for different speeds of the spindle. The data obtained from the present system and the results of evaluation are also presented in this paper. It is observed that this method is effective in determining and analyzing the spindle errors for high speed miniaturized spindle.

  • For constructing virtual environment it is more natural to model object as deformable body than as rigid body. High accuracy of simulation of model and low-latency computational cost for real-time simulation should be guaranteed. We pre-compute Green function through finite element analysis of deformable body and it is possible to simulate deformation of body in real-time environment using Capacitance Matrix Algorithm. Also, the capacitance matrix algorithm enables to construct the haptic rendering which serves the reaction force through a haptic device. The Newmark scheme is used for the more realistic haptic rendering and dynamic simulation in real-time.

  • The on-line cure monitoring during the cure process of fiber reinforced resin matrix composite material is important for the better quality and productivity. Among several cure monitoring methods, the dielectrometry that uses electrodes as its sensor is known to be the most promising method. In this study, the sensitivity of the dielectric sensor for the on-line cure monitoring was analyzed by finite element method and compared to the experimental results. Using the analytical results, the equation for the capacitance of the sensor was derived. Also, the optimal sensor design method was suggested after analyzing several different sensor shapes.

  • The carbon nanotube/poly-vinylidene fluoride (CNT/PVDF) composite films for the use of electronic devices were fabricated by spray coating method using the CNT/PVDF solution, which was prepared by adding PVDF pellets into the CNT dispersed N-Methyl-2-pyrroli-done (NMP) solution. The CNT/PVDF composite films were peeled off from the glass substrate and were investigated by the scanning electron microscopy, which revealed that the CNTs were uniformly dispersed in the PVDF films and thickness of the films were approximately $20{\mu}m$. The capacitance of the CNT/PVDF films increased dramatically by adding CNTs into the PVDF matrix, and finally saturated approximately 1880 pF. However, the I-V curves didn't show any saturation effect in the CNT concentration range of 0 ~ 0.04 wt%. Therefore we can control the performance of the devices from the CNT/PVDF composite film by adjusting the current level resulted from the CNT concentration with the uniform capacitance value.
