The wind-resistant performance of bridges is generally evaluated based on the strip assumption. For the arch rib of arch bridges, the situation is different due to the curve axis and the variable cross-sectional size. In the construction stage, the arch rib supported by a cable system exhibits flexible dynamic characteristics, and the wind-resistant performance attracts specially attention. To evaluate the wind-induced vibration of an arch rib with the maximum cantilever state, the finite element model was established to compute the structural dynamic characteristics. Then, a three-dimensional (3D) fluid-solid coupling analysis method was realized. After verifying the reliability of the method based on a square column, the wind-induced vibration of the arch rib was computed. The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance of the arch rib was focused and the flow field characteristics were discussed to explain the VIV phenomenon. The results show that the arch rib with the maximum cantilever state had the possibility of VIV at high wind speeds but the galloping was not observed. The lock-in wind speeds were larger than the results based on the strip assumption. Due to the vibration of arch rib, the frequency of shedding vortices along the arch axis trended to be uniform.
In this paper a study about concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers is presented. Lattice cantilevers are partial structures composed of deck, arch, piers and provisional steel diagonals, organized as reticular cantilever girders, in order to build arch bridges without the use of centrings, supports or temporary towers. Characteristics of this construction methodology with its variants are explained together with their implications in the erection sequence. Partial elastic scheme method is implemented in order to find initial forces of temporary cables and a forward analysis is carried out to follow the actual sequence of construction, by extending a procedure already applied to concrete cable-stayed bridges and to arches built by the classical suspended cantilever method. A numerical application on a case-study of a concrete arch bridge is performed together with a comparison between different methodologies followed for its construction sequence. Differences between erection by lattice cantilevers and cable-stayed cantilevers, are discussed. Results can be useful for designers in conceptual design of concrete arch bridges.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate how mandibular implant-supported fixed complete prosthesis, implant and mandible responded mechanically, according to curvature of arch, number and location of fixture, and amounts of load. The shape of mandibular arch was tapered or square form and, 4 or 6 fixtures were implanted in each arch model. A vertical load of 10kg was applied at the center of prosthesis and a vertical load of 20kg was applied at the location of the 10mm or 20mm cantilever posterior to the most distal implant. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed for stress distribution and deflection using commercial software(ABAQUS program) for Sun-SPARC Workstation. The results were as follows : 1. The case square arch form was more stable to compare with that of tapered arch form in respect of stress distribution and displacement under vertical load on the center of prosthesis. 2. 6-implants cases were more stable than 4-implants cases for decreasing bending torque under vertical load on the center of prosthesis. 3. Under vertical load on cantilever extension, the case of 10mm long cantilever was more stable than that of 20mm long cantilever in respect of stress distribution and displacement. 4. Under vertical load on cantilever extension, 6-implants cases had a tendency to reduce displacement and to increase the reaction force of supporting point due to increasing of the bending stiffness of the prosthesis than 4-implant case. 5. When the ends of 10mm or 20mm long cantilever were loaded, the most distal implant was under compressive stress but the second most distal implant was under the highest tensile stress and the remaining implants were under varying tensile stress. 6. Because 6-implants cases had smaller displacement than 4-implants cases, 6-implants cases were more favorable in respect of prevention of screw loosening under repeated loadings.
Numerical methods are developed for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the tapered cantilever arches with variable curvature. The differential equations governing the free vibrations of such arches are derived and solved numerically, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. The parabolic shape is chosen as the arch with variable curvature while both the prime and quadratic arched members are considered as the tapered arch with variable curvature while both the prime and quadratic arched members are considered as the tapered arch. Comparisons the natural jfrequencies between this study and finite element method SAP 90 seve to validate the numerical method developed herein. The lowest four natural frequencies are reported as a function of four non-dimensional system parameters. The effects of both the rotatory inertia and cross-sectional shape are reported. Also, the typical mode shapes of stress resultants as well as the displacements are reported.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of cantilever arches with constant volume. Its cross-sectional shape is the regular polygon whose depth is varied with the linear functional fashion. The non-dimensional differential equations governing the free vibration of such arch are derived and solved numerically for calculating the natural frequencies. As the numerical results, the effects of arch parameters such as side number of cross section, section ratio and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies are reported in figures.
The purpose of this study was to describe the application of 3D finite element analysis to determine resultant stresses on the bone anchored fixed prosthesis, implants and supporting bone of the mandible according to fixture numbers and load conditions. 4 or 6 fixtures and the bone anchored fixed prosthesis were placed in 3D finite element mandibular arch model which represents an actual mandibular skull. A $45^{\circ}$ diagonal load of 10㎏ was labiolingually applied in the center of the prosthesis(P1). A $45^{\circ}$ diagonal load of 20㎏ was buccolingually applied at the location of the 10mm or 20mm cantilever posterior to the most distal implant(P2 or P3). The vertical distribution loads were applied to the superior surfaces of both the right and the left 20mm cantilevers(P4). In order that the boundary conditions of the structure were located to the mandibular ramus and angle, the distal bone plane was to totally fixed to prevent rigid body motion of the entire model. 3D finite element analysis was perfomed for stress distribution and deflection on implants and supporting bone using commercial software(ABAQUS program. for Sun-SPARC Workstation. The results were as follows : 1. In all conditions of load, the hightest tensile stresses were observed at the metal lates of prostheses. 2. The higher tensile stresses were observed at the diagonal loads rather than the vertical loads 3. 6-implants cases were more stable than 4-implants cases for decreasing bending and torque under diagonal load on the anterior of prosthesis. 4. From a biomechanical perspective, high stress developed at the metal plate of cantilever-to-the most distal implant junctions as a consequence of loads applied to the cantilever extension. 5. Under diagonal load on cantilever extension, the 6-implants cases had a tendency to reduce displacement and to increase the reaction force of supporting point due to increasing the bendign stiffness of the prosthesis than 4-implants cases. 6. Under diagonal load on cantilever extension, the case of 10mm long cantilever was more stable than that of 20mm long cnatilever in respect of stress distribution and displacement. 7. When the ends of 10mm or 20mm long cantilever were loaded, the higher tensile stress was observed at the second most distal implant rather than the first most distal implant. 8. The 6-implants cases were more favorable about prevention of screw loosening under repeated loadings because 6-implants cases had smaller deformation and 4-implants cases had larger deformation.
Generally, mass concrete structural behavior is governed by the strain components. However, relevant guidelines in dam engineering evaluate the structural behavior of concrete dams using stress-based criteria. In the present study, strain-based criteria are proposed for the first time in a professional manner and their applicability in seismic failure evaluation of an arch dam are investigated. Numerical model of the dam is provided using NSAD-DRI finite element code and the foundation is modeled to be massed using infinite elements at its far-end boundaries. The coupled dam-reservoir-foundation system is solved in Lagrangian-Eulerian domain using Newmark-${\beta}$ time integration method. Seismic performance of the dam is investigated using parameters such as the demand-capacity ratio, the cumulative inelastic duration and the extension of the overstressed/overstrained areas. Real crack profile of the dam based on the damage mechanics approach is compared with those obtained from stress-based and strain-based approaches. It is found that using stress-based criteria leads to conservative results for arch action while seismic safety evaluation using the proposed strain-based criteria leads to conservative cantilever action.
The successful replacement of missing teeth has been one driving aim behind the emergence of implant dentistry as both a technology and clinical vocation for over four decades. To date, a multitude of dental implant devices had been designed and utilized in the patient population. Most of these devices have been designed without support of the engineering criteria. The long-term success of any dental implant is dependent upon the optimization of stresses which occurs during oral function and parafunction. Although many studies have examined the biologic interactions between dental implants and living tissue, few studies have been reported on the biomechanical aspects of dental implants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution of osseointegrated prosthesis on certain conditions, such as amount of load, location of load, length of fixtures, number of fixtures used, arch shape, bone quality, etc. Three dimentional finite element analysis was used for this study. FEM models were created using commercial software(Super SAP. for IBM 16 bit AT computer. All elements were 8-node brick, isoparametric. Mandible and prosthesis was modeled with 780 elements and 1074 nodes. The results were as follows : 1. In case of cantilever extension, there was a compressive stress at the base of the first implant and a tensile stress at the base of the second implant. 2. The stresses were linearly proportional to the amount of load. 3. The stresses were linearly proportional to the length of cantilever. 4. There was a stress concentration at the neck of the implant and bone under horizontal loads.

We designed and fabricated a planner-type thermoelastic microactuator with a latch-up operation for optical switching. Latch-up actuation is prerequisite to implement an optical switch with low power consumption and high reliability. The proposed microactuator consists of four cantilever-shaped thermal actuators, four displacement linkages, two shallow arch-shaped leaf springs, a mobile shuttle mass with a micromirror, and four elastic boundaries. The structural layer of the planar microactuator is phosphorous-doped 12$\mu\textrm{m}$-thick polysilicon, and the sacrificial layer is LTO(Low Temperature Oxide) of 3$\mu\textrm{m}$thickness. The displacement of actuator is as large as 3$\mu\textrm{m}$when the length of actuation bar is 100$\mu\textrm{m}$in length at 5V input voltage. The proposed microactuators have advantages of easy assembly with other optical component by way of fiber alignment in the substrate plane, and its fabrication process features simplicity while retaining batch-fabrication economy.

A three-noded, with three degree-of-freedom at each node, in-plane curved beam element is formulated and employed in eigen-analysis of constant curvature beam. The conventional quadratic shape functions used in a three noded C .deg. type curved beam element produce such an undesirable large stiffness that a significant error is introduced in displacements and stresses. These phenomena are called 'Stiffness Locking Phenomena', which result from spurious strain energy due to inappropriate assumptions on independent isoparametric quadratic interpolation functions. Stiffness locking phenomena can be alleviated by using modified interpolation functions which get rid of spurious constraints of conventional interpolation functions. Eigenvalues and their modes as well as displacements and stresses may be locked because they are related to stiffness. Using modified curved beam element in eigenvalue problem of cantilever and arch, the property and performance of modified curved beam element are examined by numerical experimentations. In these eigen-analyses, mass matrices are calculated by using both modified and unmodified curved beam element, are compared with theoretical solutions. These comparisons show that the performance of the modified curved beam element is better than that of the unmodified curved beam element.
