To evaluate the changes in the physical characteristics of open rainfall related to canopy effects and rainfall intensity in Korea, the terminal velocity of raindrops and drop size distributions(DSD) were continuously measured by an optical-laser disdrometer in an open site(Op) and in two forest stands(Th1: Larix leptolepis, Th2: Pinus koraiensis) during five rainfall events in 2008. The terminal velocity, DSD and two forms of kinetic energy(KE, $Jm^{-2}$$mm^{-1}$; KER, $Jm^{-2}$$h^{-1}$) of open rainfall drops were determined and were compared with those of throughfall drops under two different canopy heights. The effects of the canopy and rainfall intensity, together with wind speed, on the changes in drop size and kinetic energy of throughfall were evaluated. Throughfall drops were larger than open rainfall drops. The distribution of terminal velocities for the drop sizes measured at Th2 was lower than that at Op; however, at Th1 the distribution was similar to that at Op. The total kinetic energy of throughfall at Th1 and Th2 was higher than the total kinetic energy of open rainfall, and the kinetic energy distribution for the drop sizes wassimilar to the drop size distribution. The observed throughfall-KER at Th1 was lower than an estimate previously produced using a model. The overestimation from the modeled value at Th1 was likely to be due to overestimated values of a square root transformation of fall height and its coefficient in the model because the distributions of terminal velocity for the drop size measured at Th1 were similar to those of open rainfall.

The study of model for velocity and turbulence within the urban canopy was carried out. To evaluate existing urban model we conducted wind tunnel experiment and large-eddy simulation (LES). Mean velocity profile and turbulence are measured within simple three different obstacle arrays. To obtain supplemental data and to verify morphological model large-eddy simulation was performed. Several methods have been used to achieve embodying the flow field in urban area. Recently, morphological method obtaining flow parameters from the statistical or physical representation of obstacle elements is a arising method. It was found that all morphological model, evaluated in this study, over predict the friction velocity, most sensitive one among the flow parameters. Velocity and turbulence in the urban canopy layer were improved by the correction using 'true' friction velocity.
The performances of the Seoul National University Urban Canopy Model (SNUUCM) under different meteorological conditions (clear, cloudy, and rainy conditions) in summertime are compared using observation dataset obtained at an urban site. The daily-averaged net radiation, sensible heat flux, and storage heat flux are largest in clear days and smallest in rainy days, but the daily-averaged latent heat flux is similar among clear, cloudy, and rainy days. That is, the ratio of latent heat flux to net radiation increases in order of clear, cloudy, and rainy conditions. In general, the performance of the SNUUCM is better in clear days than in cloudy or rainy days. However, the performance in simulating sensible heat flux in clear days is as poor as that in rainy days. For all the meteorological conditions, the performance in simulating latent heat flux is worst among the performances in simulating net radiation, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux. The normalized mean error for latent heat flux is largest in rainy days in which the relative importance of latent heat flux in the surface energy balance becomes greatest among the three conditions. This study suggests that improvements to the parameterization of processes that are related to latent heat flux are particularly needed.
An accurate transpiration model for greenhouse tomato crop, which is liable to transpiration depression and yield loss because of low solar radiation and high humidity, could be an efficient tool for the optimum control of greenhouse climate and for the optimization of Irrigation scheduling. The purpose of this study was to develop transpiration model of greenhouse tomato and to carry out the experimental verification. The formulas to calculate the canopy transpiration and temperature simultaneously were derived from the energy balance of canopy. Transpiration and microclimate variables such as net radiation, solar radiation, humidity, canopy and air temperature, etc. were simultaneously measured to estimate parameters of model equations and to verify the suggested model. Leaf boundary layer resistance was calculated as a function of Nusselt number and stomatal diffusive resistance was parameterized by solar radiation and leaf-air vapor pressure deficit. The equation for stomatal diffusive resistance could explain more than 80% of its variation and the calculated stomatal diffusive resistance showed good agreements with the measured values in situations independent of which the constants of the equation were estimated. The canopy net radiation calculated by Stanghellini's model with slight modification agreed well with the measured values. The present transpiration model, into which afore-mentioned component equations were assembled, was found to predict the canopy temperature, instantaneous and daily transpiration with considerable accuracy in greenhouse climates.

The purpose of this study is to build urban canopy model (Met Office Reading Urban Surface Exchange Scheme, MORUSES) based to Unified Model (UM) by using urban building information data in Seoul, and then to compare the improving urban canopy model simulation result with that of Seoul Automatic Weather Station (AWS) observation site data. UM-MORUSES is based on building information database in London, we performed a sensitivity experiment of UM-MOURSES model using urban building information database in Seoul. Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of 1.5 km resolution Seoul building data is applied instead of London building information data. Frontal-area index and planar-area index of Seoul are used to calculate building height. The height of the highest building in Seoul is 40m, showing high in Yeoido-gu, Gangnam-gu and Jamsil-gu areas. The street aspect ratio is high in Gangnam-gu, and the repetition rate of buildings is lower in Eunpyeong-gu and Gangbuk-gu. UM-MORUSES model is improved to consider the building geometry parameter in Seoul. It is noticed that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of wind speed is decreases from 0.8 to 0.6 m s-1 by 25 number AWS in Seoul. The surface air temperature forecast tends to underestimate in pre-improvement model, while it is improved at night time by UM-MORUSES model. This study shows that the post-improvement UM-MORUSES model can provide detailed Seoul building information data and accurate surface air temperature and wind speed in urban region.
Remote sensing data can be integrated into crop models, making simulation improved. A crop model that uses remote sensing data was evaluated for its capability, which was performed through comparing three different methods of canopy measurement for cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.). The measurement methods used were leaf area index(LAI), hand-held remotely sensed perpendicular vegetation index(PVI), and satellite remotely sensed PVI. Simulated values of cotton growth and lint yield showed reasonable agreement with the corresponding measurements when canopy measurements of LAI and hand-held remotely sensed PVI were used for model calibration. Meanwhile, simulated lint yields involving the satellite remotely sensed PVI were in rough agreement with the measured lint yields. We believe this matter could be improved by using remote sensing data obtained from finer resolution sensors. The model not only has simple input requirements but also is easy to use. It promises to expand its applicability to other regions for crop production, and to be applicable to regional crop growth monitoring and yield mapping projects.
Considering the hydrological los components such as evapotranspiration, interception, surface storage and infiltration, a rainfall excess model for forest watersheds is derived. The Morton model is adopted to estimate the evapotranspration under the wetted environmental conditions. Canopy effects and ground cover interception storage rates are used to determine the net rainfall rates arrived on the surface soil. The infiltration capacity on the permeable surface is estimated from the revised Green-Ampt model derived for the natural unsteady rainfall events. The rainfall excess model derived is applied with the data from Jangpyung watershed, one of the representative watersheds of IHP. Parameters which are calibrated with the data from ten storms, the hydrometeorological, land use and soil informations, and other researchers' papers are presented.

This study reviewed the capturing performance of a canopy hood used in some melting processes of a casting manufacturing factory through a site survey. In addition, this study compared and evaluated the flow field and pressure field for the plans to enhance the hazardous air pollutants collection capacity by using CFD model. The case-2(flange attached + double hood) can be improved in terms of collection performance, but is expected to increase in hood static pressure by about 70% more than the existing structure, so it was shown that its site applicability is not good. It is judged that the shape of case-3(flange attached + double cone attached) is most suitable to improve the suction efficiency. This is because a double cone is installed at the center of the opening to concentrate the flow rate on the edge of the hood and control the hume rising to the center of the hood without a static pressure rise via the slope of the cone.
The photosynthetic rate is an indicator of the growth state and growth rate of crops and is an important factor in constructing efficient production systems. The objective of this study was to develop a canopy photosynthetic rate model of romaine lettuce using the three variables of $CO_2$ concentration, light intensity, and growth stage. The canopy photosynthetic rates of the lettuce were measured at five different $CO_2$ concentrations ($600-2,200{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$), five light intensities ($60-340{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$), and four growth stages (5-20 days after transplanting) in three closed acrylic chambers ($1.0{\times}0.8{\times}0.5m$). A simple multiplication model expressed by multiplying three single-variable models and the modified rectangular hyperbola model including photochemical efficiency, carboxylation conductance, and dark respiration, which vary with growth stage, were also considered. In validation, the $R^2$ value was 0.923 in the simple multiplication model, while it was 0.941 in the modified rectangular hyperbola model. The modified rectangular hyperbola model appeared to be more appropriate than the simple multiplication model in expressing canopy photosynthetic rates. The model developed in this study will contribute to the determination of an optimal $CO_2$ concentration and light intensity with the growth stage of lettuce in plant factories.
This study was performed to estimate forest canopy density (FCD) using airborne hyperspectral data acquired in the Independence Hall of Korea in central Korea. The airborne hyperspectral data were obtained with 36 narrow spectrum ranges of visible (Red, Green, and Blue) and near infrared spectrum (NIR) scope. The FCD mapping model developed by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) uses vegetation index (VI), bare soil index (BI), shadow index (SI), and temperature index (TI) for estimating FCD. Vegetation density (VD) was calculated through the integration of VI and BI, and scaled shadow index (SSI) was extracted from SI after the detection of black soil by TI. Finally, the FCD was estimated with VD and SSI. For the estimation of FCD in this study, VI and SI were extracted from hyperspectral data. But BI and TI were not available from hyperspectral data. Hyperspectral data makes the numerous combination of each band for calculating VI and SI. Therefore, the principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to find which band combinations are explanatory. This study showed that forest canopy density can be efficiently estimated with the help of airborne hyperspectral data. Our result showed that most forest area had 60 ~ 80% canopy density. On the other hand, there was little area of 10 ~ 20% canopy density forest.
