  • The comparative evaluation is the most effective method for site selection because the selection of waste treatment facility is to determine the optimum site out of limited candidate sites. This study adopted the ordinal scale evaluation, one of methods of comparative evaluation. The ordinal scale evaluation aims to determine the investigating items referring to the character of sites, to determine the importance factors for investigating items, and to determine the optimum site according to the quantitative evaluation. This study has focussed on reflecting the opinion of residents to the maximum extent with a weight on social and economic aspects, considering the state of confrontation against each other between the autonomous government organization and local residents, which is being emerged as a social issue relating to the evaluation rating on each item of site selection of an optimum site. Therefore, rational, and clear validity investigations and proper reduction of both time and expenses in site selection as well through this a study.

  • Recent economic and income growth in Korea has caused people to seek healthier and happier lives. Forests are seen as spaces that provide tourism and recreation. The Korea forest service and local governments are developing and designating recreational forests but previous studies on the subject have only covered customer satisfaction and how forests are used. As such, the current study aims to find issues with designation criteria for recreational forests used by Gwangju city in Gyeonggi province and suggest improvements to the system. Site E was deemed the most adequate in evaluations of five candidate site. The criteria used in the evaluations were problematic due to (1) a lack of differentiating power in evaluation items, (2) blanket coverage of score ranges, (3) a lack of additional points for special sites, and (4) unclear evaluation indices. Based on the identified issues, the current study suggests introducing additional points and clearly detailing evaluation indices and items to enhance the evaluation of recreational forest candidate sites.

The ordinal scale evaluation aims to determine the investigating items referring to the character of sites, to determine the importance factors for investigating items, and to determine the optimum site according to the quantitative evaluation. As a result of this study, the defects of the former reports on the environmental characteristics, such as obscurity of meaning and subjective statement, were reduced by the ordinal scale evaluation which is one of the quantitative evaluation methods. This ordinal scale evaluation method has some valuable advantages, such as, to be able to consider the cost-effect efficiency, to consider the objectiveness and the clearness of the reports on the environmental characteristics. Therefore the reducement of social complications about site selection of the indisposed facilities could be expected by this study.

  • In this study, we have developed the performance evaluation model for the optimal soil remediation technology selection. Performance evaluation model is composed in the evaluation of two steps. In the first stage, the candidate technologies are derived according to the conditions of drilling, type and concentration of pollutants, and the saturated/unsaturated of target site. In the second stage, each individual candidate technology is evaluated by performance evaluation model. The performance evaluation model has 5 groups of evaluation items and 12 evaluation items which have their own evaluation index and their own weights through the AHP approach surveying 40 experts. From the case study of actual design cases, the applicability of the performance evaluation model was confirmed.

  • This study aimed to determine candidate areas for tidal current-pumped storage hybrid power plants using GIS-based site selection analysis. The study area is the southwestern sea surrounding Jindo Island in South Korea. Factors to be considered for the site selection analysis were derived considering the design and installation characteristics of the hybrid power plant. Numerical simulation to predict tidal speed was performed using the MOHID(Modelo HIDrodin?mico) and the results were converted into spatial data. Subsequently, a GIS-based overlay analysis method proposed in this study was applied to derive the installation candidate area. A total of 10 regions were identified as candidate sites. Among them, it was determined that the power generator could be installed in relatively wide sea areas in Jindo, Seongnamdo, and Hajodo.

  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to prioritize sidewalk construction on rural national highways. METHODS : In order to determine an appropriate prioritization for sidewalk construction, we developed a specific methodology. The proposed methodology includes three main steps: 1) Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods, 2) Subjective evaluation of relevant road agencies for the candidate sidewalks along rural national highways, and 3) Field study conduction. Each step has four phases. The primary feature of this methodology is the addition of expert consultation and survey data, as well as a field study. In addition, the method could guarantee flexibility in selection for evaluation criteria. As a result, the proposed methodology could be used as a general procedure for application to other roadway classifications when considering sidewalk construction. RESULTS: In order to demonstrate the reasonableness of the proposed methodology, a case study was performed for exactly 100 candidate sites for sidewalk construction on rural national highways. All required evaluation scores were properly produced for each candidate site. By doing so, decision-makers can determine the priority for sidewalk construction at these sites by reviewing quantitatively and qualitatively considered data. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the case study can be applied to a long-term fundamental plan for sidewalk construction on rural national highways. Furthermore, this methodology could be employed to prioritize a small-scale SOC project(e. g. bicycle or pedestrian roads).

  • Selecting proper location for complex facility with special purpose need comprehensive consideration on the condition and surrounding environment. Especially, in case of living space for human, lighting, ventilation, efficiency in land use, etc. are important elements. Diverse 3D analysis through 3D topography modeling and virtual simulation is necessary for this. Now, it can be processed with relatively inexpensive cost since high resolution satellite image essential in topography modeling is provided with domestic technology through Arirang No. 2 satellite (KOMPSAT2). In this study, several candidate sites is selected for complex planning with special purpose and analysis on proper location was performed using the 3D topography modeling and land information. For this, land analysis, land price calculation, slope analysis and aspect analysis have been carried out. As a result of arranging the evaluation index for each candidate site and attempting the quantitative evaluation, proper location could be selected efficiently and reasonably.

  • In this study, we investigated the site feasibility for the construction of the incineration facilities in Won Ju City. To assess the environmental impact of its construction, we examined the current status of air quality in the selected candidate sites and predicted the extent of air quality change upon its operation through modification of stack type. If the stack height is assumed to be 70 m, the concentrations of $SO_2$ and dioxin in the surrounding area were predicted to increase by 0.05 ppb and 0.09 pg/$m^3$, respectively. The impact of its operation was assessed and compared among different sites. According to this analysis, more impact was expected from the residential area for the Dan-Gye site than from agricultural areas of the Kwan-Sul and Sa-Je site.

  • In recent, Korean government announced a plan to select a disposal site for high level waste (HLW) of nuclear fuel. This study mainly introduces the Finnish site selection process for the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and the geological factors considered in each site selection stage. Olkiluoto site was selected as the final SNF repository through four stages of siting process in Finland. In the siting process, parameters of structural geology, hydrology, hydrogeochemistry and engineering geology are important to assess the suitability of the candidate sites. The structural geological parameters were considered as the most important evaluation parameters for the site selection. They affect the sizes and basic shapes of the candidate sites and influence properties of other geological factors such as hydrogeology and rock mechanics. This study also discusse siting criteria, related with structural geology, considered in the foreign countries. The major structural geological parameters, considered in the siting criteria in many countries, are ductile structures, brittle structures, capable fault, volcano and seismic activity. Based on the site selecting criteria of structural geological parameters, this study discussed the concept of the parameters to be considered for site investigation and evaluation. Since the foreign site investigation factors and criteria have been decided based on the geological environment in each country, it is important to setup Korea-specific siting factors and criteria based on the comprehensive studies and investigations of the Korean geological characteristics.
