  • In this paper, efficient tracking of a moving object using optimal representative blocks is implemented by a mobile robot with a pan-tilt camera. The key idea comes from the fact that when the image size of moving object is shrunk in an image frame according to the distance between the camera of mobile robot and the moving object, the tracking performance of a moving object can be improved by changing the size of representative blocks according to the object image size. Motion estimation using Edge Detection(ED) and Block-Matching Algorithm(BMA) is often used in the case of moving object tracking by vision sensors. However these methods often miss the real-time vision data since these schemes suffer from the heavy computational load. In this paper, the optimal representative block that can reduce a lot of data to be computed, is defined and optimized by changing the size of representative block according to the size of object in the image frame to improve the tracking performance. The proposed algorithm is verified experimentally by using a two degree-of-freedom active camera mounted on a mobile robot.

  • Among the factors that must be taken into account when using thermal imaging cameras that are expanding their application to various fields, a basic study was conducted focusing on temperature on the effect of solar radiation on the photographed thermal image. Through all experiments, in order to use an image taken with a thermal imaging camera for an object installed or located outdoors, a separate temperature correction according to the size of solar radiation or a separate device to block the effect of solar radiation must be additionally installed. Since the temperature of the same object may vary in the thermal image taken indoors or outdoors, it is necessary to calibrate it through comparison with other temperatures as a reference point. In the case of measuring the temperature of a glossy surface such as metal indoors with a thermal imaging camera, it was confirmed that an environment that can remove the light reflection effect by the glossy surface must be constructed and photographed.

  • This paper introduces a novel modulation scheme for vehicular communication in taking advantage of existing LED lights available on a car. Our proposed 2-Phase Shift Keying (2-PSK) is a spatial modulation approach in which a pair of LED light sources in a car (either rear LEDs or front LEDs) is used as a transmitter. A typical camera (i.e. low frame rate at no greater than 30fps) that either a global shutter camera or a rolling shutter camera can be used as a receiver. The modulation scheme is a part of our Image Sensor Communication proposal submitted to IEEE 802.15.7r1 (TG7r1) recently. Also, a neural network approach is applied to improve the performance of LEDs detection and decoding under the noisy situation. Later, some analysis and experiment results are presented to indicate the performance of our system

  • The Mobile Mapping System is an effective method to acquire the position and image data using vehicle equipped with the GPS (Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and CCD camera. It is used in various fields of road facility management, map update, and etc. In the general photogrammetry such as aerial photogrammetry, GCP (Ground Control Point)s are needed to compute the image exterior orientation elements (the position and attitude of camera). These points are measured by field survey at the time of data acquisition. But it costs much time and money. Moreover, it is not possible to make sufficient GCP as much as we want. However Mobile Mapping System is more efficient both in time and money because it can obtain the position and attitude of camera at the time of photographing. That is, Indirect Georeferencing must use GCP to compute the image exterior orientation elements, but on the other hand Direct Georeferencing can directly compute the image exterior orientation elements by GPS/INS. In this paper, we analyze about the positional accuracy comparison of ground point using the Direct Georeferencing and Indirect Georeferencing.

  • This paper develops the coin recognition and classification system using digital image processing technique. Coin images are taken by USB camera. The developed system can be used at home since it just needs USB camera and personal computers. For this development, some digital image prodessing technique is used; size recognition technique and color classification. Using Matlab, we design the graphic user interface and verify the reliability of the developed system with some simulation result.

  • There are several problems in the conventional 2-D image processing and 3-D measurement systems. In the case of the 2-D image processing system, it is not possible to detect elevation data. In a 3-D measurement system, it requires a skillful operator and a lot of time for measuring data. Also, there exist data errors depending on operators. The limitation of detecting elevation data in the 2-D image processing system can be solved by laser diodes. In this study an algorithm that measures the accurate data in a subject face to be detected by combining laser diodes and a commercial CCD camera is developed. In the development process, a planar equation is developed using laser diodes and the equation is used to obtain a normal vector. Based on the results, an algorithm that transforms commercial CCD camera coordinates to 3-D coordinates is proposed. The completed measurement method will be applied to replace a manual measurement system for vehicle bodies and parts by an automated system.

  • Image projectors can turn any surface into a display. Integrating a surface projection with a user interface transforms it into an interactive display with many possible applications. Hand gesture interfaces are often used with projector-camera systems. Hand detection through color image processing is affected by the surrounding environment. The lack of illumination and color details greatly influences the detection process and drops the recognition success rate. In addition, there can be interference from the projection system itself due to image projection. In order to overcome these problems, a gesture interface based on depth images is proposed for projected surfaces. In this paper, a depth camera is used for hand recognition and for effectively extracting the area of the hand from the scene. A hand detection and finger tracking method based on depth images is proposed. Based on the proposed method, a touch interface for the projected surface is implemented and evaluated.

  • This paper proposes a new technque of the camera calibration to be computed a homography between the planar patterns taken by a single image to be located at the three planar patterns from uncalibrated images. It is essential to calibrate a camera for 3-dimensional reconstruction from uncalibrated image. Since the proposed method should be computed from the homography among the three planar patterns from a single image, it is implemented to more easily and simply to recover 3D reconstruction of an object than the conventional. Experimental results show the performances of the proposed method are the better than the conventional. We demonstrate examples of recovering 3D reconstruction using the proposed algorithm from uncalibrated images.

  • In stereoscopy using stereo camera system, the representative factors inducing stereoscopic depth distortions have been reported such as the inter camera distance, the convergence angle and the depth resolution. The image distance is just known to us as a factor related in optical system. In a point of view of depth distortion, it will be a factor inducing a stereoscopic depth distortion. In this paper, we focused on the proof of our opinion that the image distance is one of the weighted factors inducing depth distortion under orthostereoscopic condition.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for estimating the scene-illuminant color directly from an image is proposed. To determine the scene-illuminant color in the image. the intersection point between the light locus of camera (CCD) reponses and an approximated lines for the cluster of pixels in a highlight area on chromaticity coordinates is used. By using the predetermined characteristics of the used camera for some illuminants, this algorithm allows us to obtain more accurate estimation of the scene-illuminatnt color from a captured image than that the previous methods provide.
