Color2Gray using Conventional Approaches in Black-and-White Photography (전통적 사진 기법에 기반한 컬러 영상의 흑백 변환)

  • This paper presents a novel optimization-based saliency-preserving method for converting color images to grayscale in a manner consistent with conventional approaches of black-and-white photographers. In black-and-white photography, a colored filter called a contrast filter has been commonly employed on a camera to lighten or darken selected colors. In addition, local exposure controls such as dodging and burning techniques are typically employed in the darkroom process to change the exposure of local areas within the print without affecting the overall exposure. Our method seeks a digital version of a conventional contrast filter to preserve visually-important image features. Furthermore, conventional burning and dodging techniques are addressed, together with image similarity weights, to give edge-aware local exposure control over the image space. Our method can be efficiently optimized on GPU. According to the experiments, CUDA implementation enables 1 megapixel color images to be converted to grayscale at interactive frames rates.

  • This paper describes an implementation of the analog front end (AFE) incorporated with the image signal processing (ISP) unit in the SoC, dominating the performance of the CCD image sensor system. New schemes are exploited in the high-frequency sampling to reduce the sampling uncertainty apparently as the frequency increases, in the structure for the wide-range variable gain amplifier (VGA) capable of $0{\sim}36\;dB$ exponential gain control to meet the needed bandwidth and accuracy by adopting a new parasitic insensitive capacitor array. Moreover, the double cancellation of the black-level noise was efficiently achieved both in the analog and the digital domain. The proposed topology fabricated in a $0.35-{\mu}m$ CMOS process was proved in a full CCD camera system of 10-bit accuracy, dissipating 80 mA at 15 MHz with a 3.3 V supply voltage.

Range finding algorithm of equidistance stereo catadioptric mirror (등거리 스테레오 전방위 렌즈 영상에 대한 위치 측정 알고리즘)

  • Catadioptric mirrors are widely used in automatic surveillance system. The major drawback of catadioptric mirror is its unequal image resolution. Equidistance catadioptric mirror can be the solution to this problem. Even double panoramic structure can generate stereo images with single camera system. So two images obtained from double panoramic equidistance catadioptric mirror can be used in finding the depth and height values of object's points. But compared to the single catadioptric mirror. the image size of double panoramic system is relatively small. This leads to the severe accuracy problem in estimation. The exact axial alignment and the exact mount of mirror are the sources that can be avoided but the focal length variation is inevitable. In this paper, the effects of focal length variation on the computation of depth and height of object' point are explained and the effective focal length finding algorithm, using the assumption that the object's viewing angles are almost same in stereo images, is presented.

Automatic Mosaicing of Airborne Multispectral Images using GPS/INS Data and Unsupervised Classification (GPS/INS자료와 무감독 분류를 이용한 항공영상 자동 모자이킹)

  • The purpose of this study is a development of an automatic mosaicing for applying to large number of airborne multispectral images, which reduces manual operation by human. 2436 airborne multispectral images were acquired from DuncanTech MS4100 camera with three bands; green, red and near infrared. LIDAR(LIght Detection And Ranging) data and GPS/INS(global positioning system/inertial navigation system) data were collected with the multispectral images. First, the multispectral images were converted to image patterns by unsupervised classification. Their patterns were compared with those of adjacent images to derive relative spatial position between images. Relative spatial positions were derived for 80% of the whole images. Second, it accomplished an automatic mosaicing using GPS/INS data and unsupervised classification. Since the time of GPS/INS data did not synchronized the time of readout images, synchronized GPS/INS data with the time of readout image were selected in consecutive data by comparing unsupervised classified images. This method realized mosaicing automatically for 96% images and RMSE (root mean square error) for the spatial precision of mosaiced images was only 1.44 m by validation with LIDAR data.

  • Augmented Reality (AR) enables the enhanced realism and interaction by providing the overlaid digital information on the user's view of the physical world. In this paper, we propose an AR-based ship design visualization system for presenting ship 3D model in smart phones or table PCs. The proposed system compute corner points and feature points by contour finding method and harris corner detector, and build a ship-design drawing database. By using SURF algorithm, key feature points are extracted from ship-design drawing image which is obtained by mobile camera. Then ship-design drawing image is recognized by matching the feature points stored in DB and extracted key feature points. 3D ship structures are visualized by overlaying the ship-design drawing image on the smart phone or table PC's screen. Compared to conventional 2D ship-design, proposed system helps to easily understand the structures of the ship and reduce the business design period. Thus, Enhanced competitiveness of business is expected.

Position Control of Mobile Robot for Human-Following in Intelligent Space with Distributed Sensors

  • Latest advances in hardware technology and state of the art of mobile robot and artificial intelligence research can be employed to develop autonomous and distributed monitoring systems. And mobile service robot requires the perception of its present position to coexist with humans and support humans effectively in populated environments. To realize these abilities, robot needs to keep track of relevant changes in the environment. This paper proposes a localization of mobile robot using the images by distributed intelligent networked devices (DINDs) in intelligent space (ISpace) is used in order to achieve these goals. This scheme combines data from the observed position using dead-reckoning sensors and the estimated position using images of moving object, such as those of a walking human, used to determine the moving location of a mobile robot. The moving object is assumed to be a point-object and projected onto an image plane to form a geometrical constraint equation that provides position data of the object based on the kinematics of the intelligent space. Using the a priori known path of a moving object and a perspective camera model, the geometric constraint equations that represent the relation between image frame coordinates of a moving object and the estimated position of the robot are derived. The proposed method utilizes the error between the observed and estimated image coordinates to localize the mobile robot, and the Kalman filtering scheme is used to estimate the location of moving robot. The proposed approach is applied for a mobile robot in ISpace to show the reduction of uncertainty in the determining of the location of the mobile robot. Its performance is verified by computer simulation and experiment.

Design and Implementation of Visual Information Extraction System for Education (학습용 시각 정보 인식 시스템의 설계 및 구현)

  • As propagation of mobile smart devices is widespread, it is an observable trend that the cases of utilizing them are increasing in the school programs, and it is also anticipated that they will be very important part of the educational equipment in near future. For this reason the department of education and science technology has announced a medium and long term project on the education with smart device, which is undergoing the preparation stage, and the various academic and industrial institutes have actively produced the related research results and the application prototypes. In this paper we propose a framework on design and implementation of a visual context recognition system for educational purpose usable in the school program by utilizing a module for recognition of the texts embedded in the image captured by video camera from mobile smart device. The system proposed in this paper is consisted of the four modules, such as, image acquisition, image processing, information extraction, and knowledge representation, which are explained in details with the practical examples.

A Study on Improvement of Vision Inspector for T Type Welding nut auto Sorting System using a Masked Histogram Equalization (마스크 히스토그램 평준화를 이용한 T형 용접너트 자동 선별시스템의 비전검사기 성능개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a improvement method of vision inspector for T type welding nut using an auto sorting system. We used edge and thread detection with histogram of image which is captured by machine vision camera. We also used a binary morphology operation for a detection of spot. A major problem in this vision inspector is abnormal operation caused by degradation of image acquired. These degradations caused by oil pollution on conveyer belt. For overcome this problem, we introduce a pre-processing using a masked histogram equalization on the image acquired. Histogram equalization is applied on masked region (nut part) for increase contrast. As a result, we can remove features caused by oil pollution on background and reduce a ratio of abnormal operation from 10.0 % to 0.2 %.

A Study on Development of Systems to Enforce the interfering Cars on the Ramp (끼어들기 단속시스템 개발 연구)

  • We frequently confront with cars interfering into our lane on the ramp. We suffered from serious traffic congestion due to the interfering cars. But the police enforcement has not done actively because it's hard to enforce. In this study, we have evaluated the systems to enforce cutting-in cars through the field test. Generally, the image processing method depends on the weather. To overcome this limitation we proposed a new algorithm combined with section detection method. In the filed test we concluded the results as follows. Whereas the violation detection rate of the general image processing was 58.2%, a new algorithm proposed by this study was 74.5%. And, an error rate enforcing vehicles that do not violate was 0.0%. Also, we can use the existing facilities, such as street light because of compact and lightweight systems which are integrated camera with controller. Therefore, we concluded that it is possible to enforce the interfering Cars using vehicle enforcement systems.

Digital Fashion Image Aura represented in the Burberry Instagram (버버리 인스타그램에 나타난 디지털 패션이미지 아우라)

  • This study recognizes the importance of the social network platform as a new fashion media, and analyzes the significance of various digital fashion images, based on the 'Aura' theory of Walter Benjamin. The concept of "Disappearance of Artistic Aura" can be summarized into three discussions: 1) the change in the way of artistic perception, which is changes in value from worship to exhibition. 2) the change in the way of artistic acceptance, from personal to mass. 3) the emergence of new artistic concepts such as camera and film. By reviewing characteristics of the $21^{st}$ digital replication era, the study tried to discover and evaluate the expanded significance of the 'Aura' represented on digital fashion images, which are infinitely generated, modified, reproduced, transmitted, and shared in social network environments. The 'Burberry Instagram' was chosen as the subject of the study. The study reviewed around 2,500 images, which were uploaded from February 2011 to July 2016, and selected 200 images deemed the most representative of Burberry, and categorized and analyzed by the extended concept of 'Aura'. The study results as follows: First, the 'Aura' in digital fashion image appearing on social network platforms signifies the expansion of product value in fashion, and it also represents inherited traditions and modernization of images. Second, it also signifies the democratization and globalization of fashion through the open replication and sharing as well as the interaction of criticism and acceptance. Third, it signifies the personalized taste and fashion as everyday lifestyle, through personalized services, securing playful space, and real-time updates.
