  • This study aims to investigate the settling velocity of aggregates of cohesive sediment (floc) and its relationship with sediment size, density and fractal dimension. A system of commercial camera and macro-lens is used for the experiment. Through the image-analysis technique, the image taken by the camera system is analyzed. For the experiment, kaolinite and a natural sediment sampled at Lake Apopka in Florida have been tested. From this study, it is known that kaolinite and Lake Apopka sediments show different behaviors mainly depending on the organic matter content. Samples of kaolinite with less organic contents show a more definite trend to follow a fractal theory and relatively strong relationships between the settling velocity, density, fractal dimension and floc size compared to the Lake Apopka sediments rich in organics.

  • Recently, due to the development of mobile phone and supply of smart phone, many contents have been developed. Especially, since the small-sized cameras are equiped in mobile devices, people are interested in the image based contents development, and it also becomes important part in their practical use. Among them, the character recognition system can be widely used in the applications such as blind people guidance systems, automatic robot navigation systems, automatic video retrieval and indexing systems, automatic text translation systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a system that is able to extract text area from the natural images captured by smart phone camera. The individual characters are recognized and result is output in voice. Text areas are extracted using Adaboost algorithm and individual characters are recognized using error back propagated neural network.

  • Nowadays, people get images from various media like TV, magazines, newspaper, internet. Such images directly influence people's thoughts and lives, either consciously or unconsciously. In the past, reproduction devices have been mainly used in reproducing an original scene accurately. Lately, the cognitive preference became a key value in the scene reproduction, and it was affected by the surrounding media. Recently, the most commonly used device in reproducing an original scene is the camera. The core of an image is the light, in other words, the exposure. Most digital cameras are set to adjust exposure automatically in order to reproduce a scene physically as identical as possible. However, physically right exposure does not always give images that people prefers. Numbers of tests were done to find the exposure value that makes an image cognitively more preferred. Skin tones which are highly sensitive to color and changes in density has been used in the tests. A male and a female model have been used to classify changes in cognitive preference due to gender differences.

  • The applicability of UPT (Ultrasound Pulse Thermography) for real-time defect detection of the ceramic heating plate is described. The ceramic heating plate with superior insulation and high radiation is used to control the water temperature in underwater environment. The underwater temperature control system can be damaged owing to the short circuit, which resulted from the defect of the ceramic heating plate. A high power ultrasonic energy with pulse duration of 280 ms was injected into the ceramic heating plate in the vertical direction. The ultrasound excited vibration energy sent into the component propagate inside the sample until they were converted to the heat in the vicinity of the defect. Therefore, an injection of the ultrasound pulse wave which results in heat generation, turns the defect into a local thermal wave transmitter. Its local emission is monitored and recorded via the thermal infrared camera at the surface which is processed by image recording system. Measurements were Performed on 4 kinds of samples, composed of 3 intact plates and the defect plate. The observed thermal image revealed two area of crack in the defective ceramic heating plate.

  • Center Distance Finding (CDF) is a technique to find the sphere diameter by measuring the distance between two contacting spheres. The focal spots of the sphere clusters are formed in the back-focal plane by the transmission-mode optical microscope with the pseudothermal illumination source. Digital images taken by the CCD camera were processed by the software called Global Lab Image. The centers of the focal spots are found and the spot positions are expressed in terms of the CCD pixel elements, whose coordinate are calibrated by a heterodyne interferometer. The new CDF measurement system has been developed, which are more advantageous in time and convenience than the existing system, while the measurement uncertainly remains sufficient for its use as a magnification standard for optical microscopy. Two kinds of polystyrene spheres whose nominal diameters 3 and 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ (NIST SRM 1962 and 1960) are measured with the uncertainly less than 1% at the confidence level of 99%, and the results are compared with the results of National Institute of Standards and Technology.

  • We analyzed to calculate optical capacity after we chose established 2 component zoom copier lens system in this research. As the lens system is zoom lens system of finite object point, it has moving area limited not like to use generally camera zoom lens of infinite object point because it moves between object and image plane. The magnification of optical system can obtain -1.41~-0.64 i.e., extended or shortened image as transverse magnification, and it acquires f/12 and about $20^{\circ}$ field of view. Although this 2 component zoom copier lens system will be down resolution and dark compared with f/2.8 acquired at camera lens, it will be possibile to be able to make large aperture and it can acquire more better correct aberration with the addition of auxiliary group forward or backward.

  • Under impact or blast loads, concrete behaves with different mechanical properties comparing to the static loading conditions. In other words, with high strain rate, mechanical properties of concrete vary significantly. To evaluate the compressive characteristics of concrete with high strain rate, SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) test is typically used. However, because SHPB test method has been developed for metallic materials, it is necessary to verify the applicability of SHPB for brittle materials such as concrete. Also, there have been little researches on the evaluations of mechanical characteristics of UHPC under high strain rate conditions. This study has been performed to evaluate and analyse the compressive characteristics of plain concrete and UHPC with SHPB test apparatus. Also, to verify the applicability of SHPB test for concrete, direct displacement image analysis with high speed camera was performed for the comparisons with analytical solutions for SHPB test.

  • Face recognition is a big challenge in surveillance system since different rotation angles of the face make the difficulty to recognize the face of the same person. This paper proposes a novel method to recognize face with different head poses by using 3D information of the face. Firstly, head pose estimation (estimation of different head pose angles) is accomplished by the POSIT algorithm. Then, 3D face image data is constructed by using head pose estimation. After that, 2D image and the constructed 3D face matching is performed. Face verification is accomplished by using commercial face recognition SDK. Performance evaluation of the proposed method indicates that the error range of head pose estimation is below 10 degree and the matching rate is about 95%.

  • Image deblurring by a deconvolution method requires accurate knowledge of the blur kernel. Existing point spread function (PSF) models in the literature corresponding to lens aberrations and defocus are either parameterized and spatially invariant or spatially varying but discretely defined. In this paper, a parameterized model is developed and presented for a PSF which is spatially varying due to lens aberrations and defocus in an imaging system. The model is established from the Seidel third-order aberration coefficient and the Hu moment. A skew normal Gauss model is selected for parameterized PSF geometry structure. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated with simulations and measurements for a defocused infrared camera and a single spherical lens digital camera. Compared with optical software Code V, the visual results of two optical systems validate our analysis and proposed method in size, shape and direction. Quantitative evaluation results reveal the excellent accuracy of the blur kernel model.

  • This paper describes new moving target detection technique combining two algorithms to detect targets and reject clutters in video frame images for surveillance system: One obtains the region of moving target using phase correlation method using $N{\times}M$ sub-block images in frequency domain. The other uses adaptive threshold using learning weight for extracting target candidates in subtracted image. The block region with moving target can be obtained using the characteristics that the highest value of phase correlation depends on the movement of largest image in block. This technique can be used in camera motion environment calculating and compensating camera movement using FFT phase correlation between input video frame images. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm accurately detects target(s) with a low false alarm rate in variety environment using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve.
