Automatic Moving Target Detection, Acquisition and Tracking using Disturbance Map in Complex Image Sequences (복잡한 영상신호에서 디스터번스 맵을 이용한 움직이는 물체 자동감지, 획득 및 추적)

  • An effective method is proposed for detecting, acquisition and tracking of a moving object using a disturbance map method in complex image sequences. A significant moving object is detected and tracked within the field of view by computing a modified disturbance map method between an Input image and a temporal average image. This method is very efficient in the serveillance application of digital CCTV and an automatic tracking camera. Experimental results using a real image sequence confirmed that the proposed method can effectively detect and track a significant moving object in complex image sequences.

A Study on the Recognition of Concrete Cracks using Fuzzy Single Layer Perceptron

  • In this paper, we proposed the recognition method that automatically extracts cracks from a surface image acquired by a digital camera and recognizes the directions (horizontal, vertical, -45 degree, and 45 degree) of cracks using the fuzzy single layer perceptron. We compensate an effect of light on a concrete surface image by applying the closing operation, which is one of the morphological techniques, extract the edges of cracks by Sobel masking, and binarize the image by applying the iterated binarization technique. Two times of noise reduction are applied to the binary image for effective noise elimination. After the specific regions of cracks are automatically extracted from the preprocessed image by applying Glassfire labeling algorithm to the extracted crack image, the cracks of the specific region are enlarged or reduced to $30{\times}30$ pixels and then used as input patterns to the fuzzy single layer perceptron. The experiments using concrete crack images showed that the cracks in the concrete crack images were effectively extracted and the fuzzy single layer perceptron was effective in the recognition of the extracted cracks directions.

  • The goal of this paper is improvement of vision inspection accuracy by using histogram specification operation. The histogram is composed of horizontal axis of image intensity value and vertical axis of pixel number in image. In appearance vision inspection, the histogram of reference image and input image are different because of minutely lighting distinction. The minutely lighting distinction is main reason of vision inspection error in many cases. Therefore we made an effort for elevation of vision inspection accuracy by making the identical histogram of reference image and input image. As a result of this area separation histogram specification algorithm, we could increase the exactness of vision inspection and prevent system error from physical and spirit condition of human. Also this system has been developed only using PC, CCD Camera and Visual C++ for universal workplace.

  • In this study, a visual sensor system which can detect I-butt weld joint with height variation and includes a seam tracking algorithm was investigated. Three-dimensional position of an object can be acquired by using the method of distance measurement, i.e., an optical trigonometry which results from the spatial relations between the camera, the object and the structured light by a visible laser. Effects of laser intensity and iris number for the image quality as well as object material were investigated for the optical system design. For the image processing, a region of interest is defined from the whole image and a line image of laser is drew by using the gray level difference in the image. From the drew laser line, the weld joint can be recognized in searching the biggest point position calculated from the central difference method. Through a series of welding experiments, a good tracking performance was confirmed under GMA welding.

  • Automatic image recognition system is essential for a better man-to machine interaction. Because of the noise and deformation due to the sensor operation, it is not simple to build an image recognition system even for the fixed images. In this paper neural network which has been reported to be adequate for pattern recognition task is applied to the fixed and variational(rotation, size, position variation for the fixed image)recognition with a hope that the problems of conventional pattern recognition techniques are overcome. At fixed image recognition system. ART model is trained with face images obtained by camera. When recognizing an matching score. In the test when wigilance level 0.6 - 0.8 the system has achievel 100% correct face recognition rate. In the variational image recognition system, 65 invariant moment features sets are taken from thirteen persons. 39 data are taken to train multi-layer perceptron and other 26 data used for testing. The result shows 92.5% recognition rate.

  • This paper presents an automatic tele-inspection scheme for the remotely manufacturing process. The remote-manufacturing process is continuously monitored and a crucial process is captured by CCD Camera. The captured image is compressed by neural network and JPEG, and it is sent directly to the assembly plant for incoming inspection. Massive image data require broadband channel to transmit them to remote distance, but sender is able to transmit them to receiver in use common channel by compressing massive image data in the high ratio. After the receiver reconstructs the compressed image to be transmitted, the reconstructed image is also directly used for automatic inspection of the process. The Experimental results show that the proposed inspection mechanism could be effectively implemented for real applications.

A Method for Extracting Shape and Position of an Object using Partial M-array

  • This paper describes a new method for object extraction necessary for image tracking systems. The extraction method which this paper proposes here is that an M-array is set between a camera and the object and the obtained image including the object and M-array is pro-cessed for extracting the object. The image processing utilizes a characteristic of M-array which is robust to noise. When an M-array is overlapped on the object in background image, the object woud have a part of M-array, which is detected by use of partial correlation between the mosaic image of M-array and the standard M-array. Thus the shape and position of the object are extracted by extracting a common domain of width of high correlation value. Experiments are carried out by using an actual photo of Kumamoto city taken from an airplane as background, and by use of a rectangular and circular object. The results of experiment show a wide application of this method for practical image tracking systems.

Study on the Improvement of Indirect Intra-Oral Dental Digital X-ray Image Sensor with Optical Coupling

  • Optimum characteristics of digital X-ray sensor components were analyzed to develop intra- oral dental digital X-ray image sensor using indirect method. Parametric analysis was carried out to optimize the phosphor thickness and the fiber optic plate (FOP) coupling to charge coupled device (CCD). X-ray absorption and light diffusion in the phosphor layer were analyzed by the Monte Carlo method. Real time X-ray image was obtained with prototype X- ray image sensor using general CCD camera with 1∼10 Ip/mm resolution. It has been previously shown that large resolution degradation in X-ray images was caused by miss alignment of FOP to CCD and optical adhesive selection. In this study, we reported that X-ray image quality was greatly improved by using optimized characteristics of alignment device and phosphor thickness.

  • In this paper, we designed and made an image processing board that converts analog NTSC CVBS from CCD camera into digital image, stores it in a memory and accomplishes an appropriate digital image processing suitable to our application. And then loaded it on the self-controlled mobile vehicle and verified its performance by controlling the self-controlled mobile vehicle to avoid obstacles and arrive at the destination through various digital image processes. From the result, the self-controled mobile vehicle system avoided obstacles and got the destination correctly. We knew that designed image processing board is enough to realize the real-time control system.

Skew Correction of Business Card Images for PDA Application (PDA에서의 명함 영상의 기울기 보정)

  • We present an efficient algorithm for skew correction of business card images obtained by a PDA camera. The proposed method is composed of four parts: block adaptive binarization (BAB), stripe generation, skew angle calculation, and image rotation. In the BAB, an input image is binarized block by block so as to lessen the effects of irregular illumination and shadows over the input image. In the stripe generation, character string clusters are generated merging character strings and their inter-spaces, and then only clusters useful for skew angle calculation are output as stripes. In the skew angle calculation, the direction angles of the stripes are calculated using their central moments and then the skew angle of the input image is determined averaging the direction angles. In the image rotation, the input image is rotated by the skew angle. Experimental results shows that the proposed method yields correction rates of 97% for business card images.
