This study was conducted to diagnose the health of street trees with physiological characters, and to figure out the relation of physiological characters and cambial electrical resistances. Ginkgo biloba, Prunes serrulata and Salix koreensis were chosen in the Cheonan City. Soils under trees were collected to analyze dehydrogenase activities, and chlorophyll content, nitrate reductase and superoxide dismutase activities were analyzed from leaves sampled at the edge of crown in July. Cambial electrical resistances were measured in May, July and September, Soils with low dehydrogenase activity reflected the level of pollution. Chlorophyll content was the lowest in the leaves of P. serrulata at the Dongseo-street. Nitrate reductase activity of Ginkgo biloba was higher than P. serruluta and Satix koreensis. Nitrate reductase activity showed higher activity in the city than control(Independence Hall and Yonam College), but superoxide dismutase activity in the city lower than control. P. serruzatu in the Dongseo-street that cambial electrical resistance increase continuously during the growing season, showed the loss of vitality Cambial electrical resistance was negatively or positively correlated with nitrate reductase($r^2$=-0.566) and superoxide dismutase activity($r^2$=0.579). It was concluded that cambial electrical resistance might be suitable for diagnosing the tree health.
The initiation and cessation of cambial activities were investigated to find out the growth characteristics of the major species growing in Chuncheon, Korea. The division of cambial zone in Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis began from the middle of March through the end of March. The activity of cambial zone in P. densiflora and P. koraiensis was vigorous from the end of May through the middle of July. During this period the number of cells increased rapidly in radial direction. However, the number of cells in P. densiflora was gradually increased. The division of cambial zone in ring-porous wood, such as Quercus mongolica and Robinia pseudoacacia began in the middle of March, before the formation of vessel. The division of cambial zone in diffuse-porous wood, such as Cornus controversa and Prunus sargentii, began in early April, and then the formation of vessels began after one to three weeks. It was considered that the cambial zone in softwood was ceased from the beginning of November, whereas cambial activities in hardwood ceased in the middle of October. Consequently, the formation of growth ring was different among the species, even though the trees were grown under the same conditions.
To elucidate the origin of secondary growth in the rhizome of B. ternaturn, the developmental changes of vascular cambium was observed in ultrastructural features. The vascular cambium was gradually differentiated from procambium as in seed plants, but the cambial activity did not persist very long so that the cambial cells became a dormant state like fossil cryptogams. Dense cytoplasm of procambial cells became progressively sparse during the growth, and the tiny vesicles were fused to form numerous small vacuoles and then a few large vacuoles. These gradual changes and the occurrence of storage materials which was associated with the developmental stages might support the progressive differentiation of the cambial cells. In addition, the cessation of cambial activity could be indicated by the facts that late vascular cambial cells accumulate large lipid bodies and show very small peripheral cytoplasm and unlikely thickened cell wall, compared to other meristematic cells. Therefore. the vascular cambium showed the characteristics of both seed plants and fossil cryptogams from the view point of cambial ontogeny and activity.tivity.
Despite of the same species there is a difference in the tree shape and its wood property due to quantitatiVe and qualitatiVe differences in wood cells by the intra-annual cambial actiVity. The purpose of this study was to proVide the fundamental database of intra-annual cambial seasonal actiVity for red pine in Sokwang-ri and Anmyondo for the determination of their wood qualities. As the results of intra-annual cambial actiVity, the initiation of cambial actiVity of red pine in the plots with Age Class V in Sokwang-ri was in the middle of April and it was at the beginning of April in all plots in Anmyondo. Only the plots with Age Class IX in Sokwang-ri showed relatiVely late initiation of cambial actiVity as between middle of May and middle of June. Except one plot with Age Class IX in Sokwang-ri all plots in both sites showed the same cessation of cambial actiVity as between middle and end of October. According to intra-annual cambial actiVity, the duration of cambial actiVity in Sokwang-ri is shorter than that of Anmyondo. On the other hand, the number of cell diVision of cambial actiVity in Sokwang-ri was more than those of Anmyondo. We could establish the database for intra-annual cambial actiVity for Sokwang-ri and Anmyondo to estimate their wood quality.

This study was fulfilled to verify the durations of cambial activity and analyze the associations of degree days and precipitation with the initiation of cambial activity and intra-annual wood formation for Pinus koraiensis and Chamaecyparis pisifera planted at Mt. Worak, respectively, by monitoring of their intra-annual cambial activities. And more, the reason was also analyzed why the DBH of Chamaecyparis pisifera known as planted in the same year could be classified as two groups (CPL: ${\phi}30cm$, CPS: ${\phi}15cm$). The intra-annual cambial activity was monitored using mini-cores (${\phi}2mm$) and they were collected in 2-week interval between April and October. However, between April and May and between middle September and October expected as the initiation and cessation of the cambial activity, respectively, it was fulfilled in 1-week interval. The average number of tree rings for PK (30) was less than CPS (37) and CPL (38), whereas the average ring width of PK (4.12 mm) was wider than CPS (1.84 mm) and CPL (3.97 mm). In the comparison of ring widths between CPL and CPS, CPL was 2.13 mm wider than CPS, however, excepting CPS 1 (0.83 mm), the average ring widths of CPS 2 (2.42 mm) and CPS 3 (2.73 mm) in the last 3 years were close to the average of CPL (2.71 mm). The initiation of cambial activity for PK was between 1 and 21 April, which was 1 week earlier than CPL and CPS (excepting CPS 1) and the cessation was between 1 and 22 September. The longest growing season therefore was 157.3 days (${\pm}3.3$) and it was longer than CPL ($145.7{\pm}6.6days$) and CPS ($148.0{\pm}15.1days$). In CP groups there were wide variations for the cessation of cambial activity and also there were the meaningful linear relationship between the growing seasons and the ring widths (r = 0.69, p < 0.064). The cambial activity in PK was initiated when degree days were between 99 and 134 and in CPS (excepting PCS 1) and CPL between 134 and 200. Excepting CPS 3, the false ring was observed in all samples collected on 21 July when drought stress was high due to low precipitation from June to the beginning of July.
This study was conducted to suggest the optimal periods for planting and felling Larix kaempferi tree by monitoring its cambial activity period. In addition, the heat summation to induce the cambial activity of Larix kaempferi was investigated. The study sites were at Mt. Worak and Mt. Midong. After selecting 5 trees at Mt. Worak and Mt. Midong, the cambium samples were collected using a mini trephor with 2 mm diameter from April 7 to October 6, 2017 at Mt. Worak, and from April 7 to September 29, 2017 at Mt. Midong. After the collected cambium samples were embedded in PEG2000, transverse thin sections with a thickness of 10 to 15 ㎛ were prepared using a microtome. One Larix kaempferi sample from each site, Mt. Worak and Mt. Midong, in which the accurate monitoring of cambial activity was impossible due to the formation of traumatic resin canal, was excluded from the study. The observation of the initiation date of cambial activity under a light microscopy revealed that 2 specimens from Mt. Worak and 3 from Mt. Midong showed the initiation on April 28. The remaining 2 specimens of Mt. Worak and 1 specimen of Mt. Midong were initiated on May 4, which was a week later than the others. The heat summation that induced the initiation of cambial activity was 196.4-271.8 at Mt. Worak and 204.7-277.3 at Mt. Midong, which was similar. The termination of cambial activity occurred between August 4 and 25 at Mt. Worak, and between August 4 and September 1 at Mt. Midong. Based on the above results, it was found that the optimal planting period for Larix kaempferi in Mt. Worak and Mt. Midong was before April, about a month before the cambium activity, and the felling period was from October when the cambial activity was completely terminated.

Background: Panax ginseng has a wide range of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory functions. Wild ginseng cambial meristematic cells (CMCs) were obtained from P. ginseng cambium. This study examined the protective mechanism of wild ginseng CMCs against $\small{D}$-galactosamine (GalN)-induced liver injury. GalN, a well-known hepatotoxicant, causes severe hepatocellular inflammatory damage and clinical features similar to those of human viral hepatitis in experimental animals. Methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced in rats using GalN (700 mg/kg, i.p.). Wild ginseng CMCs was administered orally once a day for 2 wks, and then 2 h prior to and 6 h after GalN injection. Results: Wild ginseng CMCs attenuated the increase in serum aminotransferase activity that occurs 24 h after GalN injection. Wild ginseng CMCs also attenuated the GalN-induced increase in serum tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, interleukin-6 level, and hepatic cyclooxygenase-2 protein and mRNA expression. Wild ginseng CMCs augmented the increase in serum interleukin -10 and hepatic heme oxygenase-1 protein and mRNA expression that was induced by GalN, inhibited the increase in the nuclear level of nuclear factor-kappa B, and enhanced the increase in NF-E2-related factor 2. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that wild ginseng CMCs protects liver against GalN-induced inflammation by suppressing proinflammatory mediators and enhancing production of anti-inflammatory mediators.
The peroxidase activity was localized cytochemically to get an insight into its precise function in lignin biosynthesis. In this work, cerium chloride ($CeCl_3$) was used as a trapping agent for hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) generated from peroxidase. Seasonal variation of peroxidase activities in cambial region of Populus, Pinus, and Ginkgo was investigated at subcellular levels. Under transmission electron microscopy, electron dense deposits of cerium perhydroxide formed by reaction with $H_2O_2$ were observed in cambium and its immediate derivatives. The staining with $CeCl_3$ in cambium varied with growth seasons. The strongest $H_2O_2$ accumulation, regardless of tree species, appeared in May. Staining pattern of $CeCl_3$ in the cambium of poplar indicated that the production of peroxidase started in March before the opening of buds and reached the highest in May and then declined in August. Ginkgo and Pinus showed relatively late generation of $H_2O_2$ production when compared with Populus. Although Ginkgo and Pinus are classified into gymnosperms, however, the generation of peroxidase production and its duration was different from each other. Little staining appeared in all the tree samples collected in September before falling the leaves.
The calluses formed on the surface of a quarter-girdled Robinia pseudoacacia stems have been shown to originate from immature xylem cells and preexisting cambial cells. The cellus is not only formed by periclinal and anticlinal divisions of radial cells, but also axial cells. In tangential view, the callus at initial stage showed heterogeneous structure composed of long and short cells and then homogeneous one with short cells. Some cells of homogeneous structure in middle region of callus at early stage is later elongated and others mainly divided in trasverse plane. In the result the homogeneous structure becomes into a heterogeneous one. Subsequently, the long cells in heterogeneous structures elongated further and became fusifrom initials, and the short cells divided transversely became ray initials. The appearence of homogeneous and heterogeneous structure in the callus on debarked stem without organ elongation is almost similar to that of the structure in the procambium of young stem which is elongating extensively. Eventually, the ontogeny of vascular cambium in wound callus resembles that of a young stem grown normally, although the debarked stem does not grow in length but in girth and the young stem elongates activity. These findings mean that the active intrusive growth of short procambial cells occurs during the differentiation of fusiform cambial cells.
An anatomical study was conducted in order to elucidate the development of primary and secondary ray in Robinia pseudoacacia L. The height of primary ray near pith decreases progressively toward periphery, while the width and number per unit area gradually increase, and then the height, width and number remain somewhat constant. Secondary ray originates from the segmentation of fusiform initials or division of the side or end of fusiform initials at the middle of the first growth layer. And after the height and width of secondary ray increases to some extent, it remains constantly.
