  • Pressures of a five-hole probe were measured for a full range of yaw and pitch angles and complete pressure coefficient maps were obtained. Based on these maps, various features of five-hole probe pressures were revealed and new five-hole probe calibration coefficients were devised. The new calibration coefficients show non-diverging characteristics for any flow direction and one-to-one correspondence for a wide range of flow angles. These calibration coefficients expand the valid flow angle range of five-hole probe calibration by .+-.10 degrees and complement a critical defect of five-hole probe zone-division calibration method which has not been known yet. Moreover new non-diverging calibration coefficients have advantages in nulling methods, too.

  • In general, manual calibration is commonly used for the stream water quality modelling. Because the manual calibration depends upon the subjectivity and experience of the researcher, it has a problem with the objectivity of the modelling. Thus, the interest about the automatic calibration by the optimization technique is deeply increased. In this study, Influence coefficient algorithm and Genetic algorithm are introduced to develop an automatic calibration model for the QUAL2K that are the latest version of the QUAL2E. Genetic algorithm, used in this study, is very simple and easy to understand but also applicable to any complicated mathematical problem, and it can find out the global optimum solution effectively. The developed automatic calibration model is applied to the Gangneung Namdaecheon. The calibration results about the 11 water quality variables show the good correspondence between the calculated and observed water quality values.

  • This paper is concerned with a method for calibrating five-hole probes of both angle-tube and prismatic geometries to measure local total and static pressures and the magnitude and direction of the mean velocity vector. Descriptions of the calibration technique, the typical calibration data, and an accompanying discussion of the interpolation procedure are included. The flow properties are determined explicitly from measured probe pressures using calibration data. Flow angles are obtained within the deviation angle of 1.0 degree and dynamic pressures within 0.03 with 95% certainty. The variations in the calibration data due to Reynolds number are also discussed. For the range of Reynolds number employed, no effect was detected on the pitch, yaw and total pressure coefficients. However, the static pressure coefficient showed change to cause minor variations in the magnitude of the calculated velocity vector. To account for these variations, average correction factors need to be incorporated into the static pressure coefficient.

  • A long-path transmissometer is one of the optical instruments widely used to measure atmospheric light extinction coefficient without enclosing a light beam and perturbing aerosols. Over the past two decades, a number of measurements have been carried out using the long-path transmissometer manufactured by OPTEC, Inc. Calibration of the transmissometer should be performed when any component of the transmissometer system is interchanged or installation condition is changed. For a better calibration of the transmissometer, application of a modified calibration method for the existing neutral density (ND)-filter method was recommended for the computation of the atmospheric transmittance using model MODTRAN 4 in this study. It was revealed that the measured light extinction coefficient from the transmissometer which was calibrated using the existing ND-filter method could be overestimated due to the assumption of the atmospheric transmittance suggested by OPTEC, Inc. The uncertainty of the measured light extinction coefficient from the transmissometer calibrated based on the modified ND-filter method was calculated to be approximately $13Mm^{-1}$.

  • The effects of Reynolds number on the non-nulling calibration of a typical cone-type five-hole probe have been investigated for the representative Reynolds numbers in turbomachinery. The pitch and yaw angles are changed from - 35 degrees to 35 degrees with an angle interval of 5 degrees at six probe Reynolds numbers in range between $6.60{\times}10^3\;and\;3.17{\times}10^4$. The result shows that not only each calibration coefficient itself but also its Reynolds number dependency is affected significantly by the pitch and yaw angles. The Reynolds-number effects on the pitch- and yaw-angle coefficients are noticeable when the absolute values of the pitch and yaw angles are smaller than 20 degrees. The static-pressure coefficient is sensitive to the Reynolds number nearly all over the pitch- and yaw-angle range. The Reynolds-number effect on the total-pressure coefficient is found remarkable when the absolute values of the pitch and yaw angles are larger than 20 degrees. Through a typical non-nulling reduction procedure, actual reduced values of the pitch and yaw angles, static and total pressures, and velocity magnitude at each Reynolds number are obtained by employing the calibration coefficients at the highest Reynolds number ($Re=3.17{\times}10^4$) as input reference calibration data. As a result, it is found that each reduced value has its own unique trend depending on the pitch and yaw angles. Its general tendency is related closely to the variation of the corresponding calibration coefficient with the Reynolds number. Among the reduced values, the reduced total pressure suffers the most considerable deviation from the measured one and its dependency upon the pitch and yaw angles is most noticeable. In this study, the root-mean-square data as well as the upper and lower bounds of the reduced values are reported as a function of the Reynolds number. These data would be very useful in the estimation of the Reynolds-number effects on the non-nulling calibration.

  • This paper investigated the new calibration algorithm of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe for measuring three-dimensional flow velocity components. This new calibration algorithm was used for velocity data reduction from the calibration map and based on the combination of a look-up, a binary search algorithm and a geometry transformation including the translation and reflection of nodes in a calibration map. The calibration map was expanded up to the application angle, ${\pm}55^{\circ}$ of a probe. This velocity data reduction method showed a perfect performance without any kind of interpolating errors in calculating yaw and pitch angles from the calibration map. Moreover, when it was applied to an actual flow field including a swirling flow, a good result came out on the whole.

  • The appraisals of hydrology model behavior for flow and water quality are generally performed through comparison of simulated data with observed ones. To perform appraisal of hydrology model, some criteria are often used, such as coefficient of determination ($R^2$), Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE), index of agreement (d), modified forms of NSE and d, and relative efficiency criteria NSE and d. These criteria are used not only for hydrology model estimations also for various comparisons of two data sets; This NSE has been often used for SWAT calibration. However, it has been known that the NSE value has some limitations in evaluating hydrology at watersheds under monsoon climate because this statistic is largely affected by higher values in the data set. To overcome these limitations, the SWAT auto-calibration module was enhanced with K-means clustering and direct runoff/baseflow modules. However the NSE is still being used in this module to evaluate model performance. Therefore, the SWAT Auto-calibration module was modified to incorporate alternative efficiency criteria into the SWAT K-means/direct runoff-baseflow auto-calibration module. It is expected that this enhanced SWAT auto-calibration module will provide better calibration capability of SWAT model for all flow regime.
