  • The purpose of this study was to test the applicability of the HSPEXP model performance criteria for calibrating hydrologic parameters of HSPF. Baran watershed, located at Whasung city, was selected as a study watershed in this study. Input data for the HSPF model were obtained from the digital elevation map, landuse map, soil map and others. Water flow data from 1996 to 2000 was used for calibration and from 2002 to 2007 was for validation. Using the HSPEXP decision-support software, hydrology parameters were adjusted based on total volume, then low flows, storm flows, and finally seasonal flows. Suggested criteria for each model performance variables were referenced from the previous research. For the calibration period, all the HSPEXP model performance criteria were satisfied while two criteria were slightly violated for the validation period.

  • The Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4 (CAS500-4) is under development to efficiently manage and monitor forests in Korea and is scheduled to launch in 2025. The National Institute of Forest Science is developing 36 types of forestry applications to utilize the CAS500-4 efficiently. The products derived using the remote sensing method require validation with ground reference data, and the quality monitoring results for the products must be continuously reported. Due to it being the first time developing the national forestry satellite, there is no official calibration and validation site for forestry products in Korea. Accordingly, the author designed a calibration and validation site for the forestry products following international standards. In addition, to install calibration and validation sites nationwide, the authors selected appropriate sensors and evaluated the applicability of the sensors. As a result, the difference between the ground observation data and the Sentinel-2 image was observed to be within ±5%, confirming that the sensor could be used for nationwide expansion.

  • In Basel II compliance, internal rating systems are allowed for banks to enhance the self control and the validation of the system are getting more important. The validation methods are composed of qualitative test and quantitative test, three basic standards of which are discriminatory power, stability and calibration. The aim of this article is to review the quantitative tests for calibration and find a new method for it. These methods for discrimination between forecasted PD and observed PD include binomial test, chi square test, Brier score, traffic lights approach, normal test and extended traffic lights approach. We introduce a modified extended traffic lights approach considering asset correlations.

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid and accurate analytical method for determining the composition of agricultural products and feeds. This study was conducted to determine tocopherol and tocotrienol contents in rice bran by using NIRS system. Total 80 rice bran samples previously analyzed by HPLC were scanned by NIRS and over 60 samples were selected for calibration and validation equation. A calibration equation calculated by MPLS(modified partial least squares) regression technique was developed and coefficient of determination for tocopheyol and tocotyienol content were 0.975 and 0.984, respectively, in calibration sets. Each calibration equation was fitted to validation set that was performed with the remaining samples not included is the calibration set, which showed high positive correlation both in tocopherol and tocotrienol content file. This results demonstrate that the developed NIRS equation can be practically used as a rapid screening method for quantification of tocopherol and tocotrienol contents in rice bran.

  • The demand for Satellite Images is continuously increasing owing to the various applications of optical satellite images. However, the acquisition of optical images has a limitation due to problems of weather and day & night. because an optical satellite makes images with reflections of sunlight. Therefore, SAR Satellite, which uses electromagnetic waves to make an image, gives increased demand to various applications. It also makes increased interest. In this paper, a calibration and validation system, which is an essential element for high quality Radar images, is studied.

  • KARI has prepared Calibration and Validation activities for the KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) MSC data that will be launched at the end of this year. Firstly, we divided the Cal/Val activities of it to four parts, Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric and Geometric, and defmed the detailed Cal/Val items from them. Secondly, Cal/Val targets have been defined and manufactured for the role of them. Thirdly, we have made the plan and the procedure for the Cal/Val items, developed the codes for them, studied more detailed method to do them, and trained the Cal/Val activities using the foreign satellite image data by ourselves. KARI has been now setting up the KOMPSAT-2 LEOP plan with the Cal/Val activities, and probably will finish the EOP Cal/Val activities for the KOMPSAT-2 MSC data by the next April or May.

  • This study was conducted to assess the feasibility of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and reliable method for the estimation of crude protein (CP) fractions in forage legume mixtures (sudangrass and pea mixture, and kidney bean and potato mixture). A total of 178 samples were collected and their spectral reflectance obtained in the range of 400~2,500 nm. Of these, 50 samples were selected for calibration and validation, and 35 samples were used for calibration of the data set, and the modified partial least square regression (MPLSR) analysis was performed. The correlation coefficient ($r^2$) and the standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of the calibration models in the CP fractions, A, B1, B2, B3, and C, were 0.94 (1.05), 0.92 (0.74), 0.96 (0.95), 0.91 (0.42), and 0.83 (0.38), respectively. Fifteen samples were used for equation validation, and the $r^2$ and the standard error of prediction (SEP) were 0.87 (1.45), 0.91 (0.49), 0.94 (1.13), 0.36 (0.96), and 0.74 (0.67), respectively. This study showed that NIRS could be an effective tool for the rapid and precise estimation of CP fractions in forage legume mixtures.

  • In this study, some of the model verification results of STREAM (Spatio-Temporal River-basin Ecohydrology Analysis Model), a newly-developed hybrid watershed model, are presented for the runoff processes of nonpoint source pollution. For verification study of STREAM, the model was applied to a test watershed and a sensitivity analysis was also carried out for selected parameters. STREAM was applied to the Mankyung River Watershed to review the applicability of the model in the course of model calibration and validation against the stream flow discharge, suspended sediment discharge and some water quality items (TOC, TN, TP) measured at the watershed outlet. The model setup, simulation and data I/O modules worked as designed and both of the calibration and validation results showed good agreement between the simulated and the measured data sets: NSE over 0.7 and $R^2$ greater than 0.8. The simulation results also include the spatial distribution of runoff processes and watershed mass balance at the watershed scale. Additionally, the irrigation process of the model was examined in detail at reservoirs and paddy fields.

  • A triple bubbler sensor was tested in LiCl-KCl molten salt from 450 to 525 ℃ in a transparent furnace to validate thermal-expansion corrections and provide additional molten salt data sets for calibration and validation of the sensor. In addition to these tests, a model was identified and further developed to accurately determine the density, surface tension, and depth from the measured bubble pressures. A unique feature of the model is that calibration constants can be estimated using independent depth measurements, which allow calibration and validation of the sensor in an electrorefiner where the salt density and surface tension are largely unknown. This model and approach were tested using the current and previous triple bubbler data sets, and results indicate that accuracies are as high as 0.03%, 4.6%, and 0.15% for density, surface tension, and depth, respectively.

  • The wind resource assessment for measured wind data over 1 year by using the meteorological mast should be a prerequisite for business feasibility of the wind farm development. Even though the direction of boom mounting the wind vane and anemometer is carefully engineered to escape the interference of wakes generated from the met-mast structures, the shadow effect is not completely avoided due to seasonal winds in the Korean Peninsula. The shadow effect should be properly calibrated because it is able to distort the wind resources. In this study a calibration method is introduced for the measured wind data at Julpo in Jeonbuk Province. Each sectoral terrain conditions along the selected wind direction nearby the met-mast is investigated, and the distorted wind data due to shadow effects can be calibrated effectively. The correction factor is adopted for quantitative calibration by carrying out the WindSim analysis.
