  • The monthly series is an aggregation of daily values. In the absence of observable daily data, calendar effects such as trading day and holidays are estimated using a RegARIMA model. However, if the daily series were observable, these calendar effects could be estimated directly from the daily series, potentially improving the seasonal adjustment of the monthly time series. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the seasonal adjustment of monthly time series by using calendar variation estimation based on daily time series. We apply this seasonal adjustment method to three monthly time series and compare our results with those obtained using X-13ARIMA-SEATS.

  • Objectives: Diagnostic medical radiation workers in Korea have been officially monitored for their occupational radiation doses since 1996. The purpose of this study was to design models for reconstructing unknown individual radiation doses to which diagnostic radiation technologists were exposed before 1996. Methods: Radiation dose reconstruction models were developed by using cross-sectional survey data and the personal badge doses of 8167 radiologic technologists. The models included calendar year and age as predictors, and the participants were grouped into six categories according to their sex and facility type. The annual doses between 1971 and 1995 for those who were employed before 1996 were estimated using these models. Results: The calendar year and age were inversely related to the estimated radiation doses in the models of all six groups. The annual median estimated doses decreased from 9.45 mSv in 1971 to 1.26 mSv in 1995, and the associated dose variation also decreased with time. The estimated median badge doses from 1996 (1.22 mSv) to 2011 (0.30 mSv) were similar to the measured doses (1.68 mSv to 0.21 mSv) for the same years. Similar results were observed for all six groups. Conclusions: The reconstruction models developed in this study may be useful for estimating historical occupational radiation doses received by medical radiologic technologists in Korea.

  • This study seeks to analyze ships traffic characteristics according to water time in order to provide the necessary data for efficient traffic management development. To analyze maritime traffic volume according to water time, 1 year amount of solar calendar data were converted into lunar calendar, and then applied the traditional water time system of West Sea by using AIS(Automatic Identification System) observation data gathered in Mokpo port for a year of 2013. As a result, it was found herein that the number of outbound ships was larger on the $2^{nd}-3^{nd}$ water times than the $7^{th}$ water times by 23-24 %. And the number of inbound ships was higher on the $12^{th}-13^{th}$ water times than the $9^{th}$ water time by 29-33 %. The hourly variation index of inbound and outbound ships according to time, in particular, was found to change in the form of sine function model. This study is expected to serve as a necessary basic material for development of maritime traffic management according to water time.

  • Ten days and monthly mean temperatures were analysed daily data observed during July, 1916 to March, 1970 statistically. Periodic characters were calculated by Δn, new method of approximate solution of Schuster Method. According to ten days mean temperatures, annual variation function is F($\theta_d$)=16.29-5.27 cos $\theta_d$+0.75 cos2 $\theta_d$-3.14 sin $\theta_d$+1.16 sin2 $\theta_d$-0.63 sin $\3{theta}_d$, where $\theta_d$=$-\frac{\pi}{18}$(d-3), d is the order of ten days period, 1 to 36. Annual mean water temperature is 16.3$^{\circ}C$, minimum in the last ten days of February 10.9$^{\circ}C$, maximum in the last ten days of August 24.5$^{\circ}C$. Periodic character of secular variation shows 11 year and its curve is F($\theta_y$)=16.29+0.53 cos $\theta_y$ -0.16cos $2{\theta}_y$+0.10 cos$3{\theta}_y$-0.10 sin $\theta_y$, where $\theta_y$=2$-\frac{2\pi}{11}$(y-1920), y is calendar year. And the relation between air temperature x and water temprature y is following. y=9.67 1.035$\^x$

  • A statistical characteristics, relations of calendar and water year, and frequencies of precipitaion which are necessary for water resources planning were analyzed with long historical data(1905-1991 years). And the analysis of precipitation of the drought periods in 1967-1968 years was carried out. The study basins are the five major rivers in Korea. As a results of this study, annual precipitation shows an increasing trend but its variation has no statistical significance. The rellations of calendar and water year precipitation is presented, it shows that there are little difference of the total precipitation between them. The annual minimum series of total precipitation for the periods of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months by water year are constructed, and frequency precipitation for each periods using 2-parameter lognormal distribution is presented. The analysis of the precipitation in 1967-1968 years shows in a natural river basins that it would be a moderate drought, if dry seasons(Oct-May) or wet seasons(Jun-Sep) has 75 percents of historical mean precipitation of the same periods. And if it has less than 60 percents of historical mean precipitation, it would be a severe drought.

  • Background: The aim of this study was to examine the seasonal variation of death from intentional self-harm by hanging, strangulation and suffocation (HSS: Korean Standard Classification of Diseases-6 code: X70) using the 2011 death registry data. Methods: The analysis was based on data of 8,359 HSS deaths from 2011 national vital statistics in Korea. Daily, weekly, and monthly death pattern on HSS were used to examine the relationship seasonal variation and HSS deaths. Results: A total of 8,359 HSS deaths occurred in 2011, with a mean age of 50.6 years. The HSS death rate (per 100,000) was 25.5 in male and 10.8 in female. In one day 17.6 males and 8.0 females occurred HSS death on average. The number of HSS death per day was the highest on 8th June (45 deaths), and lowest on 1st February (7 deaths) during the period. The variations of daily HSS death showed wide fluctuation from a peak of 34 to 45 deaths (29th May to 9th June) to a trough of 17-26 deaths (10th-13th September: the Korean thank-giving consecutive holidays), 13-20 deaths (2nd-5th February: the new year's day by the lunar calendar) and 8-9 deaths (24th-25th December: Christmas holidays). There were no significant difference between gender and seasonal variation (month, season, and week). Conclusion: The mean number of HSS death per day was highest in June (30.6 deaths), and months with the lowest number of deaths was January and December (range, 19.4 to 19.6 deaths). HSS death were more prevalent during summer and spring and were less likely to occur during winter. On Saturdays (21.0 deaths), the number of HSS death per day was the lowest, and Monday (27.9 deaths) was the highest. HSS death was less likely to occur on holidays (21.4 deaths). There was significant seasonal variation in HSS death by weekly and monthly (p<0.01).

  • A large number of studies have indicated associations between particulate air pollution and daily mortality. Daily measurements of total suspended particulates (TSP) by high volume air sampler were matched to daily death counts supplied by the National Statistics Office, Korea. All deaths, except deaths from accidents, occurred at Ulsan from 1 January 1991 to 31 December 1994 were considered in the poisson regression analysis. The multiple regression models were used to investigate a main effects of air particulate pollution controlling for $SO_2$ levels, air temperature, relative humidity, seasonal variation, and calendar year. The results indicated that the effects of TSP, $SO_2$, temperature, and relative humidity were not significantly associated with all cause mortality. It could, however, be emphasized that the size of the parameter estimate of TSP was very similar to that of previous studies. An increase in particulates of $100{\mu}g/m^3$ was associated with a 3% increase in mortality. This relationship was observed at TSP levels well below the current National Ambient Air Quality Standard of $150{\mu}g/m^3$ in Korea as well.

  • Background: The study aimed to describe the age distribution of breast cancer diagnosis among Chinese females for comparison with the United States and the European Union, and provide evidence for the screening target population in China. Materials and Methods: Median age was estimated from hospital databases from 7 tertiary hospitals in China. Population-based data in China, United States and European Union was extracted from the National Central Cancer Registry, SEER program and GLOBOCAN 2008, respectively. Age-standardized distribution of breast cancer at diagnosis in the 3 areas was estimated based on the World Standard Population 2000. Results: The median age of breast cancer at diagnosis was around 50 in China, nearly 10 years earlier than United States and European Union. The diagnosis age in China did not vary between subgroups of calendar year, region and pathological characteristics. With adjustment for population structure, median age of breast cancer at diagnosis was 50~54 in China, but 55~59 in United States and European Union. Conclusions: The median diagnosis age of female breast cancer is much earlier in China than in the United States and the European Union pointing to racial differences in genetics and lifestyle. Screening programs should start at an earlier age for Chinese women and age disparities between Chinese and Western women warrant further studies.

  • To evaluate growing degree days(GDD) as an index of growth duration of rice plants, 30 days old seedlings of 16 japonica and 14 indica/japonica varieties were transplanted six times from May 10 at the 10-day intervals at Gyeongsan in 1982. The number of days from transplanting to heading decreased as transplanting dates delayed in all japonica varietie and 4 indica/japonica varieties but that of 10 indica/japonica varieties decreased up to June 9 or June 19 transplantings and then it levelled off or increased with further delay of transplanting. However, GDD requirement was similar among transplanting dates at appropriate base temperatures; GDD could be better than calendar day system to classify maturity of varieties especially grown in a wide range of climatic conditions. Required GDD from transplanting to heading of all indica/japonica and early japonica varieties showened a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) compared to longer season japonica varieties. Among GDD methods, an accumulation of daily Max + Min temp./2 -$l0^{\circ}C$ showed the smallest CV for the duration from transplanting to heading, but for ripening period GDD calculated with adjusted maximum temperature when it was higher than $30^{\circ}C$ showed the best results. Heading date did not affect required GDD for maturity of japonica varieties, but in indica/japonica varieties GDD decreased as heading date delayed; at late transplantings ripening period of indica/japonica varieties was less extended compared to japonica varietes due to a decrease in grain weight.

  • A long-term growth simulation was performed at 496 land units in the western coastal plains (WCP) of North Korea to test the potential adaptability of each land unit for growing South Korean rice cultivars. The land units for rice cultivation (CZU), each of them represented by a geographically referenced 5 by 5 km grid tell, were identified by analyzing satellite remote sensing data. Surfaces of monthly climatic normals for daily maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation number of rain days and solar radiation were generated at a 1 by 1 km interval by spatial statistical methods using observed data at 51 synoptic weather stations in North and South Korea during 1981-2000. Grid cells felling within a same CZU and, at the same time, corresponding to the satellite data- identified rice growing pixels were extracted and aggregated to make a spatially explicit climatic normals relevant to the rice growing area of the CZU. Daily weather dataset for 30 years was randomly generated from the monthly climatic normals of each CZU. Growth and development parameters of CERES-rice model suitable for 11 major South Korean cultivars were derived from long-term field observations. Eight treatments comprised of 2 transplanting dates $\times$ 2 cropping systems $\times$ 2 irrigation methods were assigned to each cultivar. Each treatment was simulated with the randomly generated 30 years' daily weather data (from planting to physiological maturity) for 496 land units in WCP to simulate the growth and yield responses to the interannual climate variation. The same model was run with the input data from the 3 major crop experiment stations in South Korea to obtain a 30 year normal performance of each cultivar, which was used as a "reference" for comparison. Results were analyzed with respect to spatial and temporal variation in yield and maturity, and used to evaluate the suitability of each land unit for growing a specific South Korean cultivar. The results may be utilized as decision aids for agrotechnology transfer to North Korea, for example, germplasm evaluation, resource allocation and crop calendar preparation.
