A steam turbine is one of propulsion systems of a LNG carrier, which consists of high pressure (HP) and low pressure (LP) turbines. In order to obtain high power, each one has the form of a multi-stage turbine. Especially, the first stage of a HP turbine is Curtis stage and uses partial admission considering the turbine efficiency. The performance of a HP turbine can be predicted by a mean-line analysis method, because the relatively large value of hub-tip ratio makes the three-dimensional losses small. In this study, a performance analysis method is developed for a multi-stage HP turbine using Chen's loss model developed for the transonic steam turbines. To consider the feature of partial admission, different partial admission models are reviewed, This analysis method can be used in partial load conditions as well as full load condition. The calculation results are also compared with the CFD results about some simple cases to check the accuracy of the program. Performance of two HP turbine models are calculated, and the calculation results are compared with the designed data. The comparison shows the qualitative performance analysis result.
Numerous studies have been performed to develop an analytical model that can predict the reflection of regular or irregular waves from a perforated-wall caisson breakwater. Though such irregular wave models as Suh et at. (2001) become available, regular wave models are still in extensive use because of their simplicity. In the present study, using the regular wave model of Fuggazza and Natale(1992), the reflection of irregular waves from a perforated-wall caisson breakwater was calculated in several different methods. First, the regular wave model was re-validated by the hydraulic model tests. Though the model somewhat over-predicted the reflection coefficients at larger values and under-predicted them at smaller values, overall agreement was pretty good between calculation and measurement. Then, the regular wave model was applied to calculate the irregular wave reflection in the experiments of Suh et at.(2001) and Bennett et al. (1992). In applying the regular wave model to irregular wave reflection, several different methods were used. The results showed that it is the most reasonable to use the regular wave model repeatedly for each frequency component of the irregular wave specuum with the root-mean-squared wave height for all the frequencies .

Recently, reduction of road traffic noise in residential buildings has become one of the most important subjects. To reduce the road traffic noise, noise impact assessment by the road traffic prediction model is required before building construction. For reasonable road traffic noise prediction, it is required to analysis of various factors in road traffic prediction models. This paper was studied the road traffic noise propagation factors such as distance from road to building, receiver height, alignment angle of building and reflection coefficient of the building facade by two calculation models, RLS-90 and CRTN. The result showed that noise reduction was generally higher at bottom stories by ground absorption effect. The reflection coefficient of the building facade was affect of additional sound pressure level by facade reflecting. And alignment angle of building at $90^{\circ}$ was performed effective noise reduction better than $0^{\circ}$.
Current estimates of the ice-mass balance over the Greenland and the Antarctica using retrievals of time-varying gravity from GRACE are presented. Two different GRACE gravity data, UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04, are used for the estimates to examine the impact of the relative accuracy of background models in the GRACE data processing for inter-annual variations of GRACE gravity data. In addition, the ice-mass balance is appraised from the conventional GRACE data, which represents global gravity, and the filtered GRACE data, which isolates the terrestrial gravity effect from GRACE gravity data. The former estimate shows that there exists similar negative trends of ice-mass balance over the Greenland from UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04 while the time series from the both GRACE data over the Antarctica differ significantly from each other, and no apparent trends are observed. The result for the Greenland from the latter calculation is similar to the former estimate. However, the latter calculation presents positive trends of ice-mass balance for the Antarctica from both GRACE data. These results imply that residual oceanic geophysical signals, particularly for ocean tides, significantly corrupt the ice-mass estimate over the Antarctica as leakage error. In addition, the spatial alias of GRACE is likely to affect the ice-mass balance because the spatial spectrum of ocean tides is not conserved via GRACE sampling, and thus ocean tides contaminate terrestrial gravity signal. To minimize the alias effect, I suggest to use the combined gravity models from GRACE, SLR and polar motion.
Since pipes with wall-thinning defects can collapse at fluid pressure that are lower than expected, the collapse moment of wall-thinned pipes should be determined accurately for the safety of nuclear power plants. Wall-thinning defects, which are mostly found in pipe bends and elbows, are mainly caused by flow-accelerated corrosion. This lowers the failure pressure, load-carrying capacity, deformation ability, and fatigue resistance of pipe bends and elbows. This paper offers a support vector regression (SVR) model further enhanced with a fuzzy algorithm for calculation of the collapse moment and for evaluating the integrity of wall-thinned piping systems. The fuzzy support vector regression (FSVR) model is applied to numerical data obtained from finite element analyses of piping systems with wall-thinning defects. In this paper, three FSVR models are developed, respectively, for three data sets divided into extrados, intrados, and crown defects corresponding to three different defect locations. It is known that FSVR models are sufficiently accurate for an integrity evaluation of piping systems from laser or ultrasonic measurements of wall-thinning defects.

Oil and gas production riser systems need to be designed considering a wide band quarter-modal analysis which contains low-, wave-, VIV(Vortex induced vibration) frequencies. The VIV can be separated into cross-flow(CF) and in-line(IL) components. In this study, the various idealized tri- and quarter-modal spectra are suggested to analyze fatigue damage on the production riser system. In order to evaluate the fatigue damage increment caused by the IL's motion, tri- and quarter-modal spectral fatigue damages are calculated in time domain. And the fatigue damage calculated from two different modal spectra are compared quantitatively. Then the suitability of existent wide band fatigue damage models for quarter modal spectrum was evaluated by comparison of frequency domain calculation and time domain calculation. The result show that although spectral density of IL motion is not remarkable in quantity, the effect on the fatigue damage is significant and existent fatigue damage models are not adequately estimating damage by quarter-modal spectra.
For carbon neutrality, direct-injection hydrogen engines are attracting attention as a future power source. It is essential to estimate the transient injection rate of hydrogen for the optimization of hydrogen injection in direct injection engines. However, conventional injection rate measurement techniques for liquid fuels based on the injection-induced fuel pressure change in a test section are difficult to be applied to gaseous fuels due to the compressibility of the gas and the sealing issue of the components. In this study, a momentum flux measurement technique is introduced to obtain the transient injection rate of gaseous fuels using a force sensor. The injection rate calculation models associated with the momentum flux measurement technique are presented first. Then, the volumetric injection rates are estimated based on the momentum flux data and the calculation models and compared with those measured by a volumetric flow rate meter. The results showed that the momentum flux measurement can detect the injection start and end timings and the transient and steady regimes of the fuel injection. However, the estimated volumetric injection rates showed a large difference from the measured injection rates. An alternative method is suggested that corrects the estimated injection rate results based on the measured mean volumetric flow rates.
This study compares two prominent design provisions, National Design Specification (NDS) and Eurocode 5, on load-carrying capacity calculations and failure analysis for mortise-tenon joints. Design procedures of double-shear connection from both provisions were used to calculate load-carrying capacity of mortise-tenon joints with eight different bolt sizes. From this calculation, the result was validated using finite element analysis and failure criteria models. Although both provisions share similar failure modes, their distinct calculation methods significantly influence the design load-carrying capacity values. Notably, Eurocode 5 predicts a 6% higher design load-carrying capacity for mortise-tenon joints with varying bolt diameters under horizontal loads and 14% higher under vertical loads compared to NDS. However, the results from failure criteria models indicate that NDS closely aligns with the actual load-carrying capacity. This indicates that Eurocode 5 presents a less conservative design and potentially requires fewer fasteners in the final timber connection design. This evaluation initiates the potential for the development of a wider range of timber connections, including mortise-tenon joints with wooden pegs.

This study aims to investigate the effect of restraint configuration on crack formation due to shrinkage-and-creep-induced volumetric change in unbonded post-tensioned slabs. The first part of this study focuses on the comparison of existing shrinkage and creep calculation models that are used to predict the volume-changing behavior of concrete. The second part of this study presents the finite element analysis of a series of architectural configuration prototypes subjected to shrinkage and creep, which comprise unbonded post-tensioned slabs with various restraint configurations. The shrinkage and creep effects were simulated in the analysis by imposing strains obtained from one selected calculation model. The results suggest that a slab up to 300 ft. (90 m) in length does not require a closure strip if it is unrestrained by perimeter walls, and that the most effective restraint crack mitigation strategy for a slab restrained by perimeter walls is a partial wall release.
Double steel plate concrete composite shear wall (SCSW) has been widely utilized in nuclear power plants and high-rise structures, and its shear connectors have a substantial impact on the seismic performance of SCSW. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical properties of SCSW with angle stiffening ribs as shear connections were parametrically examined for the reactor containment structure of nuclear power plants. The axial compression ratio of the SCSW, the spacing of the angle stiffening rib arrangement and the thickness of the angle stiffening rib steel plate were selected as the study parameters. Four finite element models were constructed by using the finite element program named ABAQUS to verify the experimental results of our team, and 13 finite element models were established to investigate the selected three parameters. Thus, the shear capacity, deformation capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of SCSW were determined. The research results show that: compared with studs, using stiffened ribs as shear connectors can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of SCSW; When the axial compression ratio is 0.3-0.4, the seismic performance of SCSW can be maximized; with the lowering of stiffener gap, the shear bearing capacity is greatly enhanced, and when the gap is lowered to a specific distance, the shear bearing capacity has no major affect; in addition, increasing the thickness of stiffeners can significantly increase the shear capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of SCSW. With the rise in the thickness of angle stiffening ribs, the improvement rate of each mechanical property index slows down. Finally, the shear bearing capacity calculation formula of SCSW with angle stiffening ribs as shear connectors is derived. The average error between the theoretical calculation formula and the finite element calculation results is 8% demonstrating that the theoretical formula is reliable. This study can provide reference for the design of SCSW.
