Drinking water has lots of minerals, especially calcium, sodium, kalium, magnesium, and fluoride must be labelled on the bottle about their contents. Minerals like calcium, magnesium, and fluoride have influence to the tooth development. Appropriately taking some minerals, dental caries can be prevented somewhat degree. There is no guide line about innoxious minerals like calcium and magnesium, however, noxious mineral like fluoride, should be contained less than 2 mgF/L according to the current drinking water standard. Hereupon, it is necessary to recognize the concentration of fluoride in drinking water, so I studied 15 samples of domestic drinking water on sale about the concentration of calcium and magnesium, fluoride. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. 14 drinking waters in 15 samples showed various Ca concentration. The average Ca concentration is 34.68${\pm}$31.84 mg/L, the highest is 128.91${\pm}$1.85 mg/L and the lowest is 2.0${\pm}$0.02 mg/L. 2. 13 drinking waters in 15 samples indicate the Mg concentration. The average concentration is 9.22${\pm}$11.06 mg/L, the highest is 30.43${\pm}$0.75 mg/L and the lowest is 0.0 mg/L. 3. 11 drinking waters in 15 samples indicate the F concentration. The average concentration is 0.25${\pm}$0.33 mg/L, the highest is 1.13${\pm}$0.04 mg/L and the lowest is 0.01${\pm}$0.03 mg/L. All samples are satisfied the current drinking water standard, 2 mg F/L.
The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of dental erosion according to the type of lactic acid bacteria fermented oil and to identify a method for preventing dental erosion. For the lactic acid bacteria fermented milk, liquid fermented milk, condense-stirred type fermented milk, and condense-drink type fermented milk were used, and bovine tooth specimens used in the experiment were used. As a method to prevent dental erosion, the method of adding calcium to the lactic acid bacteria fermented milk, the method of applying high and low concentrations of fluoride to the teeth before exposure to the lactic acid bacteria fermented milk, and the method of applying these two methods together were measured to measure the preventive effect of dental erosion. As a result of immersing the specimen in the experimental beverage, the surface hardness of liquid fermented milk decreased the most. When comparing the difference in surface hardness before and after prophylaxis care, the Ca 2% group and the NaF 0.05%+Ca 0.5% group showed no significant difference from the negative control group, confirming that it is an effective method for preventing dental erosion. However, considering the change in taste and the stability of ingredients, a method of adding calcium at a low concentration rather than adding a high concentration of calcium is proposed. Therefore, it is recommended to use low-concentration calcium and low-concentration fluoride together to recognize the possibility of dental erosion when ingesting lactic acid bacteria and to prevent dental erosion caused by it.

The purpose of this study was to examine the morphological characteristics and combined effects of fluoride application and laser irradiation on artificial caries-like lesion formation in bovine enamel. Enamel specimens were divided into five experiment group and placed in no-treatment(group C), APF application alone(group F), laser irradiation alone(group L), APF application before laser irradiation (group FL), and APF application after laser irradiation(group LF) on artificial caries-like lesion. Sound enamel was used as a control group. The ultrastructural changes and physical effects of the fluorided and lased enamel has been investigated by using SEM, enamel solubility and microhardness test as well as distributions of calcium, phosphorus and fluoride in internal enamel by using EPMA. The following results were obtained. 1. In the all experiment groups, the amounts of dissolved calcium of enamel surfaces significantly decreased according to increasing exposure time of acid solution than control group(P<0.001). Group L showed higher than that group FL and LF in 30 and 60min(P<0.05). 2. The microhardness values of enamel surface in the control group was highest than that in the other experiment groups. Group F, L, FL and LF were significantly increased than group C(P<0.001). The enamel surface treated with APF produced deposites of numerous small globules and lased enamel showed a cracker-like appearance with microcrack and small pore. Numerous deposits were infiltrated in the fissured portion of enamel treated with APF after laser irradiation. 4. In the case of APF application alone, the elevation of the fluoride profile can be seen within $5{\mu}m$ of the outermost layer and a similar profile observed in the specimen treated with APF before laser irradiation. However, the specimen treated with APF after laser Irradiation showed a large elevation within $10{\mu}m$ of the outermost layer of the enamel. 5. The higher Ca/P ratios were observed in $10{\mu}m$ depth of lased and fluorided enamel when compared to the sound and carious enamel. The fluoride content decreased rapidly with distance from enamel surface, in the group F, fluoride concentration was significantly higher than that in the group C, L, FL, LF and control group according to increasing enamel depth (P<0.05).
Purpose: Short implants are a potential alternative to long implants for use with bone augmentation in atrophic jaws. This meta-analysis investigated the survival rate and marginal bone level (MBL) of surface-modified short vs. long implants. Methods: Electronic and manual searches were performed for articles published between January 2010 and June 2021. Twenty-two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing surface-modified short and long implants that reported the survival rate with at least 1 year of follow-up were selected. Two reviewers independently extracted the data, and the risk of bias and quality of evidence were evaluated. A quantitative meta-analysis was performed regarding survival rate and MBL. Results: The failure rates of surface-modified short and long implants differed significantly (risk ratio, 2.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46, 3.57; P<0.000). Long implants exhibited a higher survival rate than short implants (mean follow-up, 1-10 years). A significant difference was observed in mean MBL (mean difference=-0.43, 95% CI, -0.63, -0.23; P<0.000), favoring the short implants. Regarding the impact of surface treatment in short and long implants, for hydrophilic sandblasted acid-etched (P=0.020) and titanium oxide fluoride-modified (P=0.050) surfaces, the survival rate differed significantly between short and long implants. The MBL differences for novel nanostructured calcium-incorporated, hydrophilic sandblasted acid-etched, and dual acid-etched with nanometer-scale calcium phosphate crystal surfaces (P=0.050, P=0.020, and P<0.000, respectively) differed significantly for short vs. long implants. Conclusions: Short surface-modified implants are a potential alternative to longer implants in atrophic ridges. Long fluoride-modified and hydrophilic sandblasted acid-etched implants have higher survival rates than short implants. Short implants with novel nanostructured calcium-incorporated titanium surfaces, hydrophilic sandblasted acid-etched surfaces, and dual acid-etched surfaces with nanometer-scale calcium phosphate crystals showed less marginal bone loss than longer implants. Due to high heterogeneity, the MBL results should be interpreted cautiously, and better-designed RCTs should be assessed in the future.

A 22-year-old woman was referred to our emergency department for the treatment of a chemical injury on her arm. She had accidentally spilled 99% trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) over her left forearm during an organic chemistry experiment. She visited a primary care unit, and then she was referred to our hospital for inactivation of the released fluoride ions. Her skin lesions were different from those caused by hydrofluoric acid (HF) injury. The injured area showed painful whitish maculae and patchy areas with accentuated rim. No vesiculation and bulla formation was detected. We intradermally injected a 5% solution of calcium through a 24-gauge needle into the burned skin. After the injection, she complained of more severe pain. Although TFAA contains fluorine, it does not release free fluoride ions on contact with the skin, unlike HF. In fact, application of calcium gluconate for TFAA burns is not recommended. Rather, it should be avoided since it increases pain and local abscess formation.

This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of 5% sodium fluoride-polyvinyl alcohol (NaF-PVA) tape influencing enamel remineralization by analysing enamel surface microhardness (SMH) and variation of ${\Delta}F$ of QLF. After enamel demineralizing of specimen, these 60 specimens with average KHN of microhardness ranging from 50 to 100 and with ${\Delta}F$ of QLF ranging from -15 to -25 were divided into four groups : group 1 (control group), group 2 (NaF-PVA), group 3 (fluoride varnish, FluoroDose$^{(R)}$ varnish), group 4 (Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate, Tooth mousse plus$^{TM}$). These specimens were treated with materials and then immersed in artificial saliva. We measured remineralization rate each using surface microhardness (SMH) and Quantitative light-induced fluorescence digital (QLF-D). As a result, NaF-PVA tape is better than group 1, 4 and have comparable remineralization effect with group 3 (p < 0.05).

Velopharyngeal closure is a sphincter mechanism between the activities of the soft palate, lateral pharyngeal wall and the posterior pharyngeal wall, which divides the oral and nasal cavity. It participates in physiological activities such as swallowing, breathing and speech. It is called a velopharyngeal dysfunction when this mechanism malfunctions. The causes of this dysfunction are defects in (1) length, function, posture of the soft palate, (2) depth and width of the nasopharynx and (3) activity of the posterior and lateral pharyngeal wall. The purposes of this study are to analyze the nasopharynx of cleft palate patients using cephalometry and to evaluate the degree of hypernasality using nasometry to find its relationship with velopharyngeal dysfunction. The following results were obtained : 1. In cephalometry, there were significant differences in soft palate length, soft palate thickness, nasopharyngeal depth, nasopharyngeal area, and adequate ratio between two groups. 2. In nasometry, there were significant differences between two groups in vowel /o/ and sentences including oral consonants. 3. In cleft palate patients, though no general correlation was found between Anatomic VPI and nasalance scores, vowel /i/ and sentences including oral consonants were slightly correlated. In conclusion, cephalometry and nasometer results were significantly different between the two groups. Though in the cleft palate group, Anatomic VPI and nasalance scores, which are indices for velopharyngeal closure, excluding the vowel /i/ and sentences including oral consonants show generally no significance.

The optimum condition for fluoride removal, water content reduction, and $CaF_2$ purity was determined in treating semiconductor waste water in which ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus, and fluoride are existed simultaneously using a fluidized bed reactor. Effects of pH, seed dosage, and recirculation of treated water were investigated through lab-scale experiments. Considering fluoride removal, sludge purity, and water content, that pH 5 and seed dose of 150 g were found to be optimum. Correspondingly, removal of fluoride and phosphate (${PO_4}^{3-}$-P) was 94.24% and 8.97%, respectively, with water content ratio of 12.94%. Increase in an amount of seed dosage not only enhance fluoride removal efficiency, but also buffer fluoride removal-reducing effect due to the variation of recirculation ratio of treated water and pH.
In a study of the optimum operational condition for a melting decontamination, the effects of the basicity, slag type and slag composition on the distribution of depleted uranium were investigated for radioactively contaminated metallic wastes of iron-based metals such as stainless steel (SUS 304L) in a direct current graphite arc furnace. Most of the depleted uranium was easily moved into the slag from the radioactive metal waste. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was influenced by the amount of added slag former and the slag basicity. The composition of the slag former used to capture contaminants such as depleted uranium during the melt decontamination process generally consists of silica ($SiO_2$), calcium oxide (CaO) and aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$). Furthermore, calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$), magnesium oxide (MgO), and ferric oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) were added to increase the slag fluidity and oxidative potential. The partitioning ratio of the depleted uranium was increased as the amount of slag former was increased. Up to 97% of the depleted uranium was captured between the ingot phase and the slag phase. The partitioning ratio of the uranium was considerably dependent on the basicity and composition of the slag. The optimum condition for the removal of the depleted uranium was a basicity level of about 1.5. The partitioning ratio of uranium was high, exceeding $5.5{\times}10^3$. The slag formers containing calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$) and a high amount of silica proved to be more effective for a melt decontamination of stainless steel wastes contaminated with depleted uranium.
Apigenin, a natural flavonoid found in a variety of vegetables and fruits, has been shown to possess many biological functions. The present study was undertaken to investigate the influence of apigenin on vascular smooth muscle contractility and to determine the mechanism involved. Denuded aortic rings from male rats were used and isometric contractions were recorded and combined with molecular experiments. Apigenin significantly relaxed fluoride-, thromboxane $A_2$ mimetic- or phorbol ester-induced vascular contraction, which suggests that apigenin could be an anti-hypertensive that reduces agonist-induced vascular contraction regardless of endothelial nitric oxide synthesis. Furthermore, apigenin significantly inhibited fluoride-induced increases in pMYPT1 levels and phorbol ester-induced increases in pERK1/2 levels, which suggests the mechanism involving the inhibition of Rho-kinase and MEK activity and the subsequent phosphorylation of MYPT1 and ERK1/2. This study provides evidence regarding the mechanism underlying the relaxation effect of apigenin on agonist-induced vascular contraction regardless of endothelial function.
