Phosphate is an essential material for the growth of organisms. However. since relatively small amount is required. a large amount of phosphate is abandoned in wastes and wastewater. which contaminate the ecological environment including aquatic system. Purpose of this study is to treat especially high concentrated phosphate wastewater by use of calcium precipitation method. The pH range considered was from 6 to 12 and the maximum removal of phosphate was attained at pH 12. The con-centration of phosphate was observed to decrease rapidly until a half amount of calcium ion to its equivalent for the formation of calcium phosphate precipitate was added. which resulted in the decrease of the remaining concentration of phosphate down to 0.0027 mM. The effect of fluoride ion was examined and the concentration ratio between the phosphate and fluoride ion did not have any significant influence on the removal efficiency of phosphate. The effect of pH was also investigated. With the increasing of the pH in solution, the removal rate of phosphate was increased. Also it was investigated that the effect of fluoride on the phosphate removal was not significant.

As production of LCD increases, it has become necessary to find an economically efficient way of treating LCD wastewater with high concentration of fluoride. This study focuses on the calcium sources : $CaCl_2$, $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ for the treatment of the LCD wastewater including high concentration of fluoride. Of course considering removal efficiency and economical aspect, study is continued. Then this study have objective giving aid to field. Consequently, each calcium source's removal efficiency was measured in various pH, calcium dosage, reaction time, and mixing intensity. The optimum operational conditions for $CaCl_2$ were found to be pH of 7, calcium dosage of 0.4[Ca]/[F] (mol / mol), 1 hr of operation and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. For $Ca(OH)_2$, they were pH of 7, calcium dosage of 30 mL/L, 1 hr of operation, and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. While $CaCO_3$ had operational conditions of pH of 4, calcium dosage of 30 mL/L, 1 hr operation and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. But it is recommended to use calcium sources according to various field conditions.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate fluoride release and the micro-shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) in casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP)-remineralized caries-affected dentin (CAD). Materials and Methods: Exposed dentin surfaces of 30 human third molar teeth were divided into 2 equal groups for evaluating fluoride release and the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC to CAD. Each group was subdivided into 3 equal subgroups: 1) control (sound dentin); 2) artificially demineralized dentin (CAD); 3) CPP-ACP remineralized dentin (remineralized CAD). To measure fluoride release, 15 disc-shaped specimens of RMGIC (4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were bonded on one flat surface of the dentin discs of each group. Fluoride release was tested using ion chromatography at different intervals; 24 hours, 3, 5, 7 days. RMGIC micro-cylinders were built on the flat dentin surface of the 15 discs, which were prepared according to the assigned group. Micro-shear bond strength was measured after 24 hours water storage. Data were analyzed using 1- and 2-way analysis of variance and the post hoc least significant difference test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Fluoride detected in solutions (at all intervals) and the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC bonded to CPP-ACP-remineralized dentin were significantly higher than those bonded to artificial CAD (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Demineralized CAD consumes more fluoride released from RMGIC into the solution for remineralization than CPP-ACP mineralized dentin does. CPP-ACP increases the micro-shear bond strength of RMGIC to CAD.

This work was initiated both to maximize purity of calcium fluoride sludge and to minimize water content in the settled sludge. The sludge was produced in the process of fluoride removal of semiconductor wastewater by the addition of $Ca^{2+}$ ion. Fludized bed reactor(FBR) using calcium fluoride as a seed was adapted. Optimum pH and molar ratio of $Ca^{2+}/F^-$ were determined in lab-scale study. The experimental results showed that fluoride removal was increased as pH and molar ratio of $Ca^{2+}/F^-$ increased, with the best removal of 79.8% in an optimum condition. In the optimum point of fluoride removal, very low ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P removal of 9.3% was observed. It indicates forming $CaF_2$ crystal of high purity, when side reaction of calcium with phosphate was minimized. In addition, water content of settled sludge was 19.3%, which is relatively low compared to other fluoride removal processes. Consequently, the FBR process proposed in this study was very effective in fluoride removal, producing good sludge of high purity and less water content.

The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of calcium fluoride deposited on the enamel and dentin surface and to obtain information on the morphological change and crystallographic details of mineral deposition after 12,000ppm APF application in vitro. The bovine enamel and dentin blocks were randomly assigned to eight groups according to artificial caries lesion formation and difference of fluoride application time. The fluoride concentration and morphological characteristics on the treated enamel and dentin surface were investigated by using fluoride quantitative analysis and SEM. The powdered enamel and dentin of the intact bovine incisors were prepared for the X-ray diffraction analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. The amounts of KOH-soluble fluoride on the carious enamel and dentin surface after 24h APF application were higher than after only 5min APF application(p<0.05), but in the case of the sound enamel and dentin surface were similar after 5min and 24h application (P>0.05). The fluoride content was highly increased in the carious dentin as compared with sound dentin after APF application(P<0.05). 2. The carious enamel surface after APF application, the demineralized enamel surface were recovered a more dense enamel surface and precipitation of crystal was observed a distintive surface layer of spherical globules of about 1 m diameter. In the case of the fluorided carious dentin surface, precipitation of calcium fluoride-like material was deposited both inside the dentinal tubules as well as in the intertubular regions. 3. The crystallographic structure of powdered enamel and dentin after 24h APF application had large crystallities of apatite and CaF2 diffraction peaks in the enamel as compared with dentin. The diffraction data collected from the 27.50-29.50(2) angular range of the powdered enamel, the (105) apatite, (225) apatite and (111) CaF2 peaks of the enamel crystallities were detected after 24h APF application.
Objectives : To evaluate the effect of fluoride application on the color and microhardness of bleached enamel and compare it to that of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) application. Methods : Twenty freshly extracted human adult molar were each sectioned into halves, the specimens divided and treated according to five experimental groups: Group 1, treatment with 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) bleaching agent; Group 2, treatment with 10% CP followed by a 1.23% fluoride gel application; Group 3, treatment with 10% CP followed by a 2.23% sodium fluoride varnish application; Group 4, treatment with 10% CP followed by a 0.11% sodium fluoride gel application; Group 5, treatment with 10% CP followed by a CPP-ACP gel application. All groups were treated 6 h per day for 14 days then immersed in distilled water for 2 weeks. Changes in enamel color were evaluated on Baseline and Day 14. Microhardness were evaluated on Baseline, Days 7 and 14. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. Results : All the bleached enamel specimens revealed increased whiteness and overall color value. Group 1 showed the lowest microhardness values than that of Groups 2, 3, 4 and 5. In all groups, the hardness of tooth after bleaching showed a significant decrease in the microhardness as compared with the one prior to tooth bleaching. The specimens treated with remineralizing agents showed relatively less reduction in enamel microhardness than control group. Conclusions : The addition of fluoride and CPP-ACP did not impede the whitening effect. The use of remineralizing agents during bleaching treatment can significantly enhance the microhardness of bleached enamel.
Waste concrete powder was used to remove fluoride ions in highly concentrated fluoride wastewater. 92.6% of fluoride in 100 mg F/L wastewater was removed by 1% dose of the cement paste powder that represents characteristics of waste concrete powder, whereas the removal efficiencies of raw cement and lime were 47.3% and 96.4%, respectively. The cement paste powder was competitive to lime, common fluoride removal agent. Various Ca-bearing hydrates such as portlandite, calcium silicate hydrate, and ettringite in cement paste slurry can remove fluoride by precipitating $CaF_2$ and absorbing $F^-$ ions. In the experiments using both cement paste and lime, 50~67% of lime can be substituted by cement paste to satisfy fluoride effluent limitation of 15 mg/L. Since cement paste has higher acid neutralization capacity than lime, it can be recycled to neutralize more acid and to remove more fluoride. Therefore waste concrete powder can be more economical and viable alternative for lime in fluoride wastewater treatment.

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the acid resistance and antimicrobial effect of fluoride-laser combined application. Recently extracted third molars were used. $5{\times}3mm$ of the buccal and lingual specimens were exposed and incipient artificial carious lesions were formed by keeping them in the artificial cariogenic solution for 5 days. They were divided into five groups and treated with fluoride and laser according to the predetermined regimen. The acid resistance was compared between groups by chemical quantitative analysis of the calcium and phosphorous released into the test solution after single or combined application of fluoride and laser. The antimicrobial effect of each group was analyzed by counting the number of colony forming units after microbial incubation. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows; 1. Experimental groups showed lower values in calcium and phosphorous contents as well as in $CFU/m{\ell}$(colony forming units) than control group. Combined application groups showed lower values than single application groups. 2. Acid resistance and antimicrobial effect by fluoride and laser treatment were confirmed in this study. 3. Based upon the above-mentioned results of this study, it can be assumed that the use of laser-fluoride combined application may provide the child and adolescent patient population with antimicrobial effect as well as acid resistance. Further studies using various materials and experimental conditions are being encouraged.

The present study was conducted to investigate the adsorption potential of red mud for fluoride removal. Different operation parameters such as the effect of contact time, initial concentration, pH, competing anions, seawater, adsorbent dose amount, and adsorbent mixture were studied. Nearly 3 hr was required to reach sorption equilibrium. Equilibrium sorption data were described well by Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of red mud was 5.28 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption at pH 3 was higher than in the pH range 5-9. The presence of anions such as sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, and bicarbonate had no significant effect on fluoride adsorption onto red mud. The fluoride removal by red mud was greater in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of calcium and magnesium ion in seawater. The use of red mud alone was more effective for the removal of fluoride than mixing red mud with other industrial waste such as oyster shells, lime stone, and steel slag. This study showed that red mud has a potential application in the remediation of fluoride contaminated soil and groundwater.
It was hypothesized that NaF induces calcium sensitization in $Ca^{2+}$-controlled solution in permeabilized rat mesenteric arteries. Rat mesenteric arteries were permeabilized with $\beta$-escin and subjected to tension measurement. NaF potentiated the concentration-response curves to $Ca^{2+}$ (decreased $EC_{50}$ and increased $E_{max}$). Cumulative addition of NaF (4.0, 8.0 and 16 mM) also increased vascular tension in $Ca^{2+}$-controlled solution at pCa 7.0 or pCa 6.5, but not at pCa 8.0. NaF-induced vasocontraction and $GTP{\gamma}S$-induced vasocontraction were not additive. NaF-induced vasocontraction at pCa 7.0 was inhibited by pretreatment with Rho kinase inhibitors H1152 or Y27632 but not with a MLCK inhibitor ML-7 or a PKC inhibitor Ro31-8220. NaF induces calcium sensitization in a $Ca^{2+}$ dependent manner in $\beta$-escin-permeabilized rat mesenteric arteries. These results suggest that NaF is an activator of the Rho kinase signaling pathway during vascular contraction.
