  • This paper proposes an energy-efficient cache and memory management scheme for next-generation IoT devices. The proposed scheme adopts a low-power phase-change memory (PCM) as the main memory of IoT devices, aims at minimizing the write traffic to PCM, which is vulnerable to write operations. Specifically, when a cache block of the last-level cache memory is flushed to main memory, the cache block that causes less writes to PCM is preferentially replaced by tracking the modifications of each cache line that constitutes the cache block. In addition, by considering the reference bit of the cache block and the dirty bit of the cache lines, our scheme reduces the energy consumption without degrading the memory system performances. Through simulations using SPEC benchmarks, it is shown that the proposed scheme reduces the write traffic to PCM by 34.6% on average and the power consumption by 28.9%, without memory performance degradations.

  • In enterprise environments, hybrid storage typically utilizes SSDs over disk-based RAID. Typically, SSDs over RAID are used as the data cache. Recently, the LeavO caching scheme was introduced to reduce the parity update overhead of the underlying RAID. In this paper, we combine the data caching and LeavO caching schemes and derive cost models of the combined cache to determine the optimal data and LeavO cache sizes. We also propose the Adaptive Combined Cache that dynamically adjusts the data cache and LeavO cache sizes for evolving workloads. Experimental results show that the performance of the Adaptive Combined Cache is significantly superior to that of the conventional data caching scheme and is comparable with that of the off-line optimal scheme.

  • This paper proposes an L1 cache prefetch scheme using an excessively aggressive hardware prefetcher and a hardware prefetch filter having a small direct-mapped filtering cache. A quantitative analysis method has been introduced and applied to analyze nonideal effects of aggressive cache prefetching. From those analysis results, the structure and algorithm of a prefetch filter has been derived and simulated, and the overall system performance has been measured using a cycle-by-cycle cache simulator. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the overall system performance by 18% on the average over several benchmarks

  • In order to utilize cache in multiprocessor system, cache coherence problem must be handled. Central directory scheme is one of hardware-assisted cache coherence solutions. The goal of this paper was not only to propose some special methods needed to apply central directory scheme to the specific multiprocessor system based on Intel486 microprocessors but also to design central directory unit for cache coherence of the target system. The problems of arbitrating several requests from processors, storing the cache information, and generating control signals for cache line fill and snoop cycle were solved.

  • With the mobile traffic in the network increases exponentially, multi-access edge computing (MEC) develops rapidly. MEC servers are deployed geo-distribution, which serve many mobile terminals locally to improve users' QoE (Quality of Experience). When the cache space of a MEC server is full, how to replace the cached videos is an important problem. The problem is also called the cache replacement problem, which becomes more complex due to the dynamic video popularity and the varied video sizes. Therefore, we proposed a new cache replacement scheme based on local video popularity and video size to solve the cache replacement problem of MEC servers. First, we built a local video popularity model, which is composed of a popularity rise model and a popularity attenuation model. Furthermore, the popularity attenuation model incorporates a frequency-dependent attenuation model and a frequency-independent attenuation model. Second, we formulated a utility based on local video popularity and video size. Moreover, the weights of local video popularity and video size were quantitatively analyzed by using the information entropy. Finally, we conducted extensive simulation experiments based on the proposed scheme and some compared schemes. The simulation results showed that our proposed scheme performs better than the compared schemes in terms of hit rate, average delay, and server load under different network configurations.

  • This paper proposes a proxy-based caching optimization scheme for improving the streaming media services in wireless mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed scheme utilizes the proxy for data packet transmission between media server and nodes in WLANs, and the proxy locates near the wireless access pointer. For caching optimization, this paper proposes NFCO (non-full cache optimization) and CFO (cache full optimization) scheme. When performs the streaming in the proxy, the NFCO and CFO is to optimize the caching performance. This paper compared the performance for optimization between the proposed scheme and the server-based scheme and rate-distortion scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance than the existing server-only scheme and rate distortion scheme.

  • We propose a hybrid prefix caching scheme to enable high speed IP address lookup. All prefixes loaded in a prefix cache should not be overlapped in address range for correct IP lookup. So, every non-leaf prefix needs to be expanded not so as to be overlapped. The shorter expanded prefix is more preferable because it can cover wider address range just as an single entry in a prefix cache. We exploits advantages of two dynamic prefix expansion techniques, bounded prefix expansion technique and bitmap-based prefix expansion technique. The proposed scheme uses dual bound values whereas just one bound value is used in bounded prefix expansion. Our elaborated technique make the dual bound values be associated with several subtries flexibly using bitmap information, rather than with fixed subtries. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of the average length of the expanded prefixes and cache miss ratio. The experiment results show the proposed scheme has lower cache miss ratio than other previous schemes including both bounded prefix expansion and bitmap-based expansion irrespective of the cache size.

  • The traffic on the Internet has been growing exponentially for some time. This growth is beginning to stress the current-day routers. However, switching technology offers much higher performance. So the label switching network which combines IP routing with switching technology, is emerged. EspeciaJJy in the data driven label switching, flow classification and cache table management are needed. Flow classification is to classify packets into switching and non-switching packets, and cache table management is to maintain the cache table which contains information for flow classification and label switching. However, the cache table management affects the performance of label switching network considerably as well as flowclassification because the bigger cache table makes more packet switched and maintains setup cost lower, but cache is restricted by local router resources. For that reason, there is need to study the cache replacement scheme for the efficient cache table management with the Internet traffic characterized by user. So in this paper, we propose several cache replacement schemes for label switching network. First, without the limitation at switching capacity in the router. we introduce FIFO(First In First Out). LFC(Least Flow Count), LRU(Least Recently Used! scheme and propose priority LRU, weighted priority LRU scheme. Second, with the limitation at switching capacity in the router, we introduce LFC-LFC, LFC-LRU, LRU-LFC, LRU-LRU scheme and propose LRU-weighted LRU scheme. Without limitation, weighted priority LRU scheme and with limitation, LRU-weighted LRU scheme showed best performance in this paper.

  • In general, the hit ratio of the first level cache is one of the most important factors in determining the performance of computer systems. Prefetching from lower level memory structure is one of the most useful techniques for improving the hit ratio of the first level cache. In this paper, we propose a prefetch on continuous same page access (CSPA) scheme which improves the prefetch efficiency of the instruction cache and reduces prefetch cost at the same time. The proposed CSPA scheme traces the page addresses of executed instructions to count how many times the same memory page is accessed continuously. To increase the prefetch efficiency, the CSPA scheme initiates prefetch only if the number of accesses to the same page exceeds the threshold value. Generally, the size of a L1 cache block is smaller than that of a L2 cache block. Therefore, one L2 cache block contains a number of L1 cache blocks. To reduce the number of unnecessary accesses to the L2 cache due to prefetch, the CSPA scheme enables prefetch only when the missed L1 block and the prefetch L1 block are in the same L2 cache block, leading to reduced prefetch cost. According to our simulations, the proposed prefetching scheme improves the performance by up to 6.7%.

  • This paper analyzes file access characteristics of smartphone apps and finds that a large portion of file writes are performed only once. Based on this observation, we present a new buffer cache management scheme that considers this characteristics. Buffer cache improves storage performance by maintaining hot file data in memory thereby servicing subsequent requests without storage accesses. However, it should flush modified data to storage in order to resist system crashes. The proposed scheme evicts cache data that has been written only once upon flushes, thus improving cache space utilization. Simulation experiments show that the proposed scheme improves cache hit ratio by 5-33% and power consumption by 27-92%.
