A Study on Brand Identity of TV Programs in the Digital Culture - Focusing on the comparative research of current issue programs, and development - (디지털 문화에서 TV 방송의 브랜드 아이덴티티 연구 -시사 교양 프로그램의 사례비교 및 개발을 중심으로-)

  • The emergence of new communication media, digital, is something of a wonder, as well as a cultural tension. The industrial technologies that dramatically expand human abilities are being developed much faster than the speed of adaptation by humans. Without an exception, it creates new contents and form of the culture by shaking the very foundation of the notion about human beings. Korean broadcasting environment has stepped into the era of multi-media, multi-channel as the digital technology separated the media into network, cable, satellite and internet. In this digital culture, broadcasting, as a medium of information delivering and communication, has bigger influence than ever. Such changes in broadcasting environment turned the TV viewers into new consumers who participate and play the main role in active communication by choosing and using the media. This study is trying to systemize the question about the core identity of broadcasting through brand as the consumers stand in the center of broadcasting with the power to select channel. The story schema theory can be applied as a cognitive psychological tool to approach the active consumers in order to explain the cognitive processes that are related to information processing. It is a design with stories, which comes up as a case of a brand's story telling. The range of this study covers the current issue and educational programs in network TV during the period of May and August of year 2005. The cases of Korean and foreign programs were compared by the station each program is broadcasted. This study concludes that it is important to take the channel identity into the consideration in the brand strategy of each program. Especially, the leading programs of a station must not be treated as a separate program that has nothing to do with the station's identity. They must be treated to include the contents and form that builds the identity of the channel. Also, this study reconfirmed that building a brand of the anchor person can play as an important factor in the identity of the program's brand.

  • This study has been surveyed the establishment and operation of nature observation facilities in the urban ecological open space of Eastern Area, Japan. Major nature observation facilities were visitor centers, nature trails and environmental facilities of nature trail. Also, interpretation as an approach to communicating and understanding of nature was progressed variously in study sites. Interpreters were park rangers and naturalists and volunteers. Major activities of the volunteers were the interpretation, environmental management and monitoring, and communication paper publication. The education materials for self-guiding of ecological open space were from two types to four types. In the advertisement methods, the advertisement through the notice paper of metropolitan, city, and destrict was the most and internet homepage, electronic communication bullentin of district, cable TV, and fax service were utilized in the four survey sites.

HD-CCTV System Design with Extended Transmission Distance using Digital Modulation (디지털 변조를 적용하여 전송거리가 확장된 HD-CCTV 시스템 설계)

  • In this paper, a digital closed-circuit television (CCTV) transmission system called the extended reach high definition serial digital interface (ER-SDI) is proposed to increase the transmission distance while preserving the quality using digital modulation. The current standard of HD-serial digital interface (HD-SDI) has the maximum transmission distance of 200 m. Recently, one system which transforms the digital signal to an analog signal and modulates color signal to extend the transmission distance is proposed. Another system which uses IP network is also proposed. However, the former system has a disadvantage of video quality and the latter system has high latency. The proposed ER-SDI is designed to extend the transmission distance of 518 m by adopting multilevel constellations and a channel code for a data rate of 1.485 Gbps. The maximum transmission distance of the proposed system is calculated using the specification of HD-SDI and the experiment result under coaxial cable environment.

  • Increasing demand for realistic media and improvement of transmission and device techniques accelerate ultra-high definition(UHD) service realization. In Korea, the cable TV broadcasting companies are planning to commercialize in Apr. 2014. For the terrestrial TV broadcasting service, technical issues are considered for the specification of UHD broadcasting system. However, the frequency bands and the system bandwidth for the terrestrial UHD broadcasting system have not been decided. In this paper, we propose required spectrum bandwidth for the next-generation terrestrial broadcasting service considering source coding, error correcting codes and modulation techniques. Also, we propose frequency management plan for terrestrial UHD broadcasting system in which we divide all parts of the country into 9 frequency zones and allocate 4 frequency band to each frequency zone considering single frequency network (SFN).

  • DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) is a new media service that can provide CD quality audio, various data service, interactive and high quality mobile communications through popular media such as terrestrial broadcasting, satellite, cable TV, and internet. In this paper, a new EPG(Electronic Program Guide) application model is proposed. The model is based on DAB and combines a DAB receiver and PCs so that it can take advantages of using various multimedia services and plenty of internet contents. The developed EPSD(EPG Provider System on DAB) has Web-based Server/Client structure and povides EPG functionalities to client PCs over internet. Therefore, the DAB receiver can be smaller and cheaper, and can develop abundant data services on internet. It can also provide high quality video services and be expected to become an important component in future home network systems.

Research for measuring degradation of IPTV-serviced videos (IPTV 서비스 영상에 대한 객관적 품질측정 방안 연구)

  • With the advent of IP-based multimedia service based on IP network, there is a rapidly increasing demand for IPTV. Unlike the previous coaxial cable based TV, IPTV provides a variety of convergence services based on IP newark. However, since the IPTV service quality is a lot affected by the network degradation such as packet loss and jitter, it may not be guaranteed. In this paper, we propose an objective measure for various degradations of IPTV-based videos considering subjective assessment. To this end, we first determine QoE(Quality of Experience) indicators, which can affect human visual perception. Then we develop the video quality metric for each QoE indicator. Subjective assessment based on MOS is conducted and used to construct mapping relationship between each measure and perceived visual quality. Experiments are performed on various videos to confirm the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method and show high correlation with subjective assessment.

Development of a Rich Media Framework for Hybrid IPTV (하이브리드 IPTV를 위한 리치 미디어 프레임워크 개발)

  • With the growing trends of communication- broadcasting convergence, a hybrid IPTV that supports both IP network-based on-demand media and terrestrial or cable-based broadcast media is gaining attraction. This paper proposes a rich media framework for hybrid IPTV with support of the latest H.264 codec. For this purpose, we design and implement a media component and a RIA run-time engine customized for TV with the hybrid media. The media component has been designed to provide a uniform and efficient application interface to the various playback methods for RF broadcast and IP-based stored or live media. For performance and portability, it exploits media stream abstraction, adaptive on-demand I-frame search, and automatic calculation of play duration. Based on the proposed media interface, we develop a RIA run-time prototype. It has been carefully designed to fully utilize the built-in graphic acceleration hardware for optimized rendering in the resource-constrained IPTV environments. Demonstration and experiment results validate the performance and usefulness of the developed framework. The framework is expected to be used effectively to support graphics and hybrid media in the applications of IPTV-based VOD, advertisement, and education.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the elements of Japanese popular culture portrayed in Korean new generation fashion at the current point of time, when Japanese popular culture is first being opened to Korea. And the another purpose is to look into the fashion consciousness of them, which is made up of these aspects. The new generation plays the leading role in further excelling the culture of our society. They are the generation of sense and sensibility, the generation of "me", the generation of information, and the generation of individuality. Even before Japanese popular culture was officially opened, the new generation was already accepting fashion, comics and animation, video games, music, broadcasting, food, etc. The Japanese cultural elements that show most in Korean fashion are street fashion and the fashion of celebrities. These are mostly brought in by fashion magazines, the internet, satellite TV, the new media of cable TV, and street shops. The aspects of Japanese popular culture in Korean new generation fashion are many and varied. Such examples in fashion are : vintage style, school-girl style, sexy causal style, black coordination, soft avant-garde style. It can be said that the fashion consciousness of Korean new generation could be placed in the following order. First, the variety of fashion. Next, the internationalism of fashion. Third, the information of fashion, and last, the play value of fashion. Interest has peaked in Japanese culture after the official opening, and this study has explored the very same aspects which can be seen in Korean new generation fashion. This study was meant to help make a responsible and sturdy new generation fashion culture which can help face the new millennium.

Structures and Characteristics of Movie Consumption Media (영화 소비 창구의 구조와 특성)

  • This study examines structures and characteristics of movie consumption media. Using survey data, this research focused on combinations of movie platforms including theater, video, DVD, terrestrial television, cable television and the Internet. The results indicated that there were forty eight combinations in accessing theatrical movies. The market share of theaters was approximately 33.5%. However, this has increased to 64.50% in case of integrating other movie consumption media. The results of Chi-Square analysis showed that although the older movie-goers prefer to theaters, the youngers like to access other movie media. In addition, many movie-goers tended to replicate their viewing at the theater.

  • The charged broadcasting market has been becoming very competitive to get the limited media consumers since IPTV was introduced to the market. This research analyzed the competition among interactive broadcasting media. We employed the niche theory for comparing IPTV with Cable TV and Satellite TV, which are two major existing broadcasting media. For employing the niche theory, we focused on the gratification-opportunity features of the media caused by the consumers' gratification sought: ease of use, interactivity, variety of content, and economic feasibility. The results showed the extent to which media are utilized, the extent to which each pair of media are perceived as similar, and the competitive superiority between each pair of media on each dimensions. Finally, we examined the competition structure of IPTV and other broadcasting media, and proposed the competitive strategy for IPTV to get an advantages.
