  • Recently, broadcasting companies have been faced with changes in social environment, particularly, the emergence of new media, including the internet, cable TV and DMB, and in the political environment, such as convergence in broadcasting and communications media. To cope with these changes, broadcasting companies are showing increasing interest in building new broadcasting information systems. This study presents how to develop a web-based broadcasting information system for the small and medium-sized broadcasting company. For developing the system, the study describes system configuration, business function relationship diagrams and business flow diagrams, entity relationship diagrams, major programs, and graphic user interfaces. The newly developed web-based broadcasting information system is expected to increase business productivity to a significant extent through faster decision-making and business execution in and out of the company.

A Study of Convergence Modem Design for Giga Internet Service over CATV Network (CATV 망에서의 기가 인터넷 서비스를 위한 융복합 모뎀 설계에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to propose a novel technology of network convergence to provide ultra high speed internet services over CATV networks, by which a CMC(cable modem concentrator) and CM(cable modem) of 1Gbps level are designed. This technology not only lowers the production cost in comparison to the existing bonding technology with DOCSIS specification but also enables the adjustment of data speed based on the channel bandwidth. According to the experiments, when convolutional code rate with 128QAM is changed to 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and 7/8, the data recorded the maximum transmission speed of up to 299 Mbps at the zero error rate. As the convolutional code rates with 256QAM is increased, it showed 334Mbps at the error rate of $10^{-5}$. Based on the findings of this paper, if we secure the channel bandwidth of 200MHz and adjust the modulation order of QAM and the convolution code rate depending on the channel status, we can get the transmission speed of more than 1Gbps, which is much more competitive in its function and price than the existing technology based on DOCSIS.

  • This paper addresses the stereoscopic 3D broadcasting technology that delivers the 3DTV contents through the digital cable networks. In order to convey the 3D contents via DCA TV network, specifications of 3D video format, compression, multiplexing, signalling and transport are to be developed. Since 3D has some constraints unlike 2D, it is required to be well designed by considering the capacity of the additional view and the backward/forward compatibility. This paper goes with the latest trends of 3D standard, requirements and service scenarios and then covers the 3D format, compression, multiplexing and signaling, service information and transport/reception technologies.

Effect of the VOD Holdback Strategy Change on IPTV and Cable TV VOD Usage (VOD 홀드백 정책 변화가 IPTV와 케이블TV VOD 이용에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the effect of changes in the content distribution strategy on VOD usage by comparing the VOD usage pattern following the changes in the IPTV and Digital Cable SVOD holdback policy. The result of this study shows that after changing the SVOD holdback from one week to three weeks, the VOD usage decreased up to 50 percent while paid VOD revenue increased as a result of the rise in PPM. The time series analysis shows statistical decrease in the number of SVOD usage, SVOD usage per user, and PPV revenue per user while VOD revenue per user increased significantly. Moreover, SVOD usage within the drama genres such as mini-series, weekend series, weekend special series, and sitcom decreased significantly. This research provides a case study on the effect of the broadcaster's content distribution policy on the VOD user behavior thus proposing broadcasters and platform operators the ways of establishing distribution strategy as well as invigorating the VOD usage.

A Study on the IPTV Usage and Service Satisfaction (IPTV 수용자의 이용행태와 서비스 만족도에 대한 연구)

  • Since the inception of Internet Protocol TV's real-time service on January, 2009, technological challenges and lack of content diversity of IPTV have been cited as problem areas. While past researches focused on IPTV's technological, industrial and policy facets, this research surveyed the viewers' viewing and usage patterns, and the level of service satisfaction among actual audiences of MegaTV, SKBroadband, and LGTV since January. The results show that subscription fee and content types were the two dominant determinants in audience's choice of a particular IPTV company. The high users of IPTV were on average aged between 30-39, and women tended to be heavier users than men. The surveyed audience also regarded IPTV to be more similar to the Internet than any other medium such as Cable TV and Satellite TV. IPTV audience cited 'lifestyle service' and 'additional service' offerings to be highly relevant to their usage and satisfaction; interactive service and educational service also showed high correlation to usage and satisfaction. The most watched contents on IPTV were domestic TV series, followed by foreign movies and variety shows. 'Fees for additional features,' 'lack of real-time terrestrial TV service', and 'lack of content variety' were the major areas of concern for IPTV viewers. They answered that the monthly fee was the most important factor in the selection of IPTV. Use of pay-per-view contents and add-on interactive service fees were also seen as problematic. With regards to future usage, the IPTV audience revealed that they were very sensitive and reluctant to pay for additional services. While existing researches concentrated on IPTV's technological problems and lack of content diversity, this study illuminated the more pragmatical side of the viewers, namely, the importance of price in audience's selection of an IPTV service provider. From these results, it is recommended that, before doing anything else, the service providers try to meet the audience's expected price points in order to garner the full potential of IPTV and the attendant mass audience.

  • With the rapid change of broadcasting industry, the dominant market power of Korean free TV is going down. The purpose of this study is to estimate what is their strategy to recover the actual difficulties as for advertising media and production company. We will focus on mainly their horizontal diversification, MPP(multiple program provider). They will be classified and analysed by 5 portfolio types of Aaker: Cashcow Brand, flanker Brand, Strategic Brand, Silver Bullet Brands and Branded Energizer. For this, we will study the data from Korean Broadcasting Committee, home page of each channels, etc. At result, since MPP(multiple program provider), affiliates of Korean free TV have the stable advertising revenues compared with other cable channels, there are many cases of Cashcow brands which need few supplementary investment from the parental company and influence positively for the other channel brands.

  • D-CATV VOD service provides various contents such as drama and movie with high quality regardless of time and place. As the usage time of the VOD service increases, the viewing time of real-time terrestrial broadcasting is shortened. As the demand for VOD service is high and the number of digital users is increasing, the VOD market is rapidly growing. Therefore this study investigates the age and gender analysis of digital cable TV users and analyzed the usage patterns and audience cases of users. VOD service has been shown to be used by many users for the first time through remote control and free coupons. Non-users of VOD service did not use it because of charge and did not feel the necessity, but some non-users did not recognize the free VOD service.

Joint Quality Control of MPEG-2 Video Programs for Digital Broadcasting Services (디지털 방송 서비스를 위한 MPEG-2 비디오 프로그램들의 결합 화질 제어)

  • In digital broadcasting, services such as digital satellite TV, cable TV and digital terrestrial TV, several video programs are compressed by MPEG-2, and then simultaneously transmitted over a conventional CBR (Constant Bit Rate) broadcasting channel. In this paper, we propose a joint quality control scheme to be able to accurately control the relative picture quality among the video programs, which is achieved by simdt;,nL'Ously controlling the video encoders to generate the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) compressed video streams. Our quality control scheme can prevent the video buffer overflow and underflow by total target bit allocation process, and also exactly control the relative picture quality in terms of PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) between some programs requiring higher picture quality and others by rate-distortion modification. Furthermore we present a rate-distortion estimation method for MPEG-2 video, which is base of our joint quality control, and verify its performance by experiments. The most attractive features of this estimation method are as follows: 1) computational complexity is low because main operation for the estimation is to calculate the histogram of OCT coefficients into quantizer; 2) estimation results are very accurate enough to be applied to the practical MPEG-2 video coding applications. Simulation results show that the proposed joint quality control scheme accurately controls the relative picture quality among the video progran1s transmitted over a single channel as well as provides more consistent and higher picture quality than independent coding scheme that encodes each program independently.

The Monitoring of Information about Food and Nutrition Presented Throughout Various Television Brodeast Media (방송매체에 나타난 식품영양정보 모니터링)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze information about food and nutrition presented through the television broadcast media, with the aim of finding out the optimal communication method for supplying the general public with accurate information. To perform this study, a total of sixteen monitoring people were recruited and trained before and during the study. Five domestic TV channels were selected to be monitored, and the total monitoring period was six months. For maximum efficiency, the monitoring people were assigned to 8 teams. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows : First, the total reported cases of information about food and nutrition were 237, of which about 30% were judged appropriate and 70% as inappropriate. Second, classifying each case by program type, information programs made up the highest portion at 82 cases (34.6%), cooking programs accounted for 76 cases (32.1%), news programs for 40 cases (16.9%), and entertainment programs for 7 cases (3.0%). The analysis showed that the greatest amount of incorrect information was found in dramas, followed by entertainment, information, cooking and news programs. Third, classifying each case by theme of contents monitored, meal preparation and cookery made up the highest portion at 86 cases (36.3%), foods accounted for 67 cases (28.3%), disease and diet-therapy for 40 cases (16.9%), eating habits for 31 cases (13.1%), and diet and fitness for 13 cases (5.5%). Incorrect information was conveyed most often on the themes of food habits, foods, disease and diet-therapy, cookery, and diet and fitness. Fourth, classifying each case by channel, Cable TV had the highest frequency at 72 cases (30.4%), MBC had 51 cases (21.5%), SBS had 43 cases (18.1%), KBS1 had 41 cases (17.3%) and KBS2 had 30 cases (12.7%). In conclusion, systematic monitoring should be continued to reduce the frequency of incorrect information being broadcast and to help ensure that accurate information is conveyed to the general public. Moreover, there should be a system of cooperation to provide information to help broadcast production teams establish a strategic program. Finally, it is essential to organize an advisory team by promoting links between the mass media and specialists in the field, and to develop an educational program on nutrition to help ensure the communication of accurate information on food and nutrition.
