System identification of the suspension tower of Runyang Bridge based on ambient vibration tests

  • A series of field vibration tests are conducted on the Runyang Suspension Bridge during both the construction and operational stages. The purpose of this study is devoted to the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the suspension tower. After the tower was erected, an array of accelerometers was deployed to study the evolution of its modal parameters during the construction process. Dynamic tests were first performed under the freestanding tower condition and then under the tower-cable condition after the superstructure was installed. Based on the identified modal parameters, the effect of the pile-soil-structure interaction on dynamic characteristics of the suspension tower is investigated. Moreover, the stiffness of the pile foundation is successfully identified using a probabilistic finite model updating method. Furthermore, challenges of identifying the dynamic properties of the tower from the coupled responses of the tower-cable system are discussed in detail. It's found that compared with the identified results from the freestanding tower, the longitudinal and torsional natural frequencies of the tower in the tower-cable system have changed significantly, while the lateral mode frequencies change slightly. The identified modal results from measurements by the structural health monitoring system further confirmed that the vibrations of the bridge subsystems (i.e., the tower, the suspended deck and the main cable) are strongly coupled with one another.

  • When an abnormal condition occurs due to a fault current at a consumer location where electricity is supplied through high-Tc superconducting(HTS) cable, the HTS cable would be damaged if there is no appropriate method to protect it. The fault-current-limiting type HTS cable that is suggested in this study has a structure of transport part and limit part. It conduct a zero impedance transport current at ordinary operations and carry out a fault current limiting at extraordinary operations. To make a perfect this structure, it is essential to investigate electrical properties of transport part that comprise the fault-current-limiting type HTS cable. In this paper, transport part that comprise HTS wire with copper stabilization layer is examined the current transport properties and the stability evaluation.

Comparison Study of Elastic Catenary and Elastic Parabolic Cable Elements for Nonlinear Analysis of Cable-Supported Bridges (케이블교량의 비선형해석을 위한 탄성현수선 및 탄성포물선 케이블요소의 비교연구)

  • This study introduces an elastic parabolic cable element for initial shaping analysis of cable-supported structures. First, an elastic catenary cable theory is shortly summarized by deriving the compatibility condition and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic catenary cable element. Next, the force-deformation relations and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic parabolic cable elements are derived and discussed under the assumption that sag configuration under self-weights is small. In addition the equivalent cable tension is defined in the chord-wise direction. Finally, to demonstrate the accuracy of the elastic parabolic cable element, nonlinear relationships of nominal cable tension-chord length and nominal cable tension-tangential stiffness for a single element are presented and compared with results using an elastic catenary cable theory as the slope is varied.

  • Cable network system is a flexible lightweight structure which curved cables can transmit only tensile forces. The weight of cable roof dramatically can reduce when the length becomes large. The cable network system is too flexible, most cable systems are stabilized by pretension forces. The tensile force of cable system is greatly influenced by the sag ratio and pretension forces. Determining initial sag ratio of cable roof system is essential in a design process of cable structures. Final sag ratio and pretension depends on initial installed sag and on proper handling during installation. The design shape of cable system has an affect on the sag and pretension, and must be determined using well-defined design philosophy. This paper is carried out the comparative data of the deflection and tensile forces on the geometric non-linear analysis of cable network systems according to sag ratio. The study of cable network system is provided to technical informations for the design of a large span cable roof, analytical results are compared with the results of other researchers. Structural nonlinear analysis of systems having cable elements is relatively complex than other rigid structural systems because displacements are large as a reason of flexibility, initial prestress is applied to cables in order to increase the rigidity, and then divergence of nonlinear analysis occurs rather frequently. Therefore, cable network systems do not exhibit a typical nonlinear behavior, iterative method that can handle geometric nonlinearities are necessary.

A multi-parameter optimization technique for prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges considering prestress in girder

  • The traditional design procedure of a prestressed concrete (PC) cable-stayed bridge is complex and time-consuming. The designers have to repeatedly modify the configuration of the large number of design parameters to obtain a feasible design scheme which maybe not an economical design. In order to efficiently achieve an optimum design for PC cable-stayed bridges, a multi-parameter optimization technique is proposed. In this optimization technique, the number of prestressing tendons in girder is firstly set as one of design variables, as well as cable forces, cable areas and cross-section sizes of the girders and the towers. The stress and displacement constraints are simultaneously utilized to ensure the safety and serviceability of the structure. The target is to obtain the minimum cost design for a PC cable-stayed bridge. Finally, this optimization technique is carried out by a developed PC cable-stayed bridge optimization program involving the interaction of the parameterized automatically modeling program, the finite element structural analysis program and the optimization algorithm. A low-pylon PC cable-stayed bridge is selected as the example to test the proposed optimization technique. The optimum result verifies the capability and efficiency of the optimization technique, and the significance to optimize the number of prestressing tendons in the girder. The optimum design scheme obtained by the application can achieve a 24.03% reduction in cost, compared with the initial design.

  • Electrical treeing phenomenon, regarded as pre-breakdown which accelerates aging process leading an insulation to the complete breakdown, is with no doubt extremely fatal to the performance of the insulation. Investigated in this paper is electrical treeing representing local dielectric failure according to flow pattern, the flow history of liquid polyethylene formed during the extrusion process. Experiments of electrical tree initiation by means of ramp tests were conducted using newly developed electrode system with point-to-point structure. Constant voltage tests were also carried out with the electrode system to estimate the life time of the insulation. Results were analyzed using statistical method such as Weibull distribution.

  • The purpose of development is to localize a connector for connection of cable and GIS for underground transmission system. The cable connector for GIS provides electrical insulation of GIS housing part and makes connection of ultra high voltage electrical apparatus and power cable by controlling electrical stress between electrodes of power cable termination. Generally Korean switchgear makers are using a connector for GIS made by foreign companies. We manufactured sample by best structure design of great capacity conductor connecting part and then modified the design by analysis of shape and section. We completed the suitable sample for current cycling test condition of conductor connecting part sample and ensured surge characteristics of line by short-time current test.

  • In this study, the dynamic response of the umbilical cable in a deep-water unmanned underwater vehicle system was analyzed. In order to analyze the forces acting on the cable, the launcher and umbilical cable were modeled by the simple 1-D mass-spring system. Damping and dynamic analysis was carried out by a direct time integration scheme using the $Newmark-{\beta}$ method with inverse iteration procedure, considering the nonlinear drag forces acting on the launcher. The obtained results of the present study can be used for the design of connecting the structure of the launcher and cable of the UUV system.

  • Flutter stability is one of major concerns on the design of long-span cable-stayed bridges. Considering the geometric nonlinearity of cable-stayed bridges and the effects due to the nonlinear wind-structure interactions, a nonlinear method is proposed to analyze the flutter stability of cable-stayed bridges, and a computer program NFAB is also developed. Taking the Jingsha bridge over the Yangtze River as example, parametric analyses on flutter stability of the bridge are carried out, and some important design parameters that affect the flutter stability of cable-stayed bridges are pointed out.

  • Loading/unloading at sea is necessitated as larger container ships are being used. It is also unavoidable to load/unload at sea during military operations. An experimental cable array robot system, which can be used for loading/unloading at sea, consisting of four cables operated by four motors is designed and built. Even though it has simple structure, it has a large pay-load/robot-weight ratio, flexibility and wide workspace and can be easily built at low cost. In order to plan and control the paths of end-effector, two interpolation methods are introduced and compared. Since the robot is entirely based on cable tension, an analysis of tension is also presented for monitoring and planning purpose.
