  • In this paper, we propose a cable climbing robot which can climb up and down the cables in the bridges. The robot mechanism consists of three parts: a wheel based driving mechanism, adhesion mechanism, and safe landing mechanism. The wheel based driving mechanism is driven by tooth clutches and motors. The adhesion mechanism plays the role of maintaining adhesion force by a combination of pantograph, ball screw, and springs even when the power is lost. The safe landing mechanism is developed for guaranteeing the safety of the robot during operations on cables. It can make the robot fall down with reduced speed by dissipating the gravitational forces. The robot mechanism is designed and manufactured for validating its effectiveness.

  • We analyzed the mechanism of EM emission in telecommunication system and extracted the dominant parameter in EMC design. The I/O cable, ventilation hole and shield design of chassis are important EMC design Issues in telecommunication systems. Because telecommunication systems have much more I/O cables than other electronic products, EMC design of I/O cable is very important in telecommunication systems. Therefore by the method of experimentation and simulation, EM coupling mechanism of I/O cable was analyzed and the design rule for low emission was extracted. On the base of these EMC design rules, EMC design of telecommunication system was executed without complex redesign or debug. The result obtained by these methods was shown in this paper.

  • In this paper, a self-activated cable spooling system for seaborne winch is developed . The system consists of a hydraulic servo driving unit and a cable position measurement mechanism. To realize the cable spooling system, it is carried out the mathematical modelling of the system and designed the proportional controller through the system aalysis and the simulation. The cable spooling system is tested and evaluated to validate the performance of the controller. The test results shows a good traceability of the cable spooling system under disturbance of cable tension.

  • In this paper, cable drive mechanism is proposed to implement high reduction gear ratio. Cable drive mechanism has great advantages such as light weight, high degree of freedom about design aspect and zero backlashes. However, it is restrictively utilized for robotic applications because it is difficult to implement high reduction gear ratio more than 10 to 1. Proposed mechanism enables multi-level reductions by adopting seamless winding method (SWM) which links the previous output axis and the next input axis. Consequently, this reduces the mechanical complexity significantly and enables high reduction with only one single wire cable. 3D CAD design was provided and prototype was manufactured.

  • In this study, the volume resistivity of XLPE materials with various voltage ratings was discussed. The volume resistivity of the developed XPLE nanocomposite was measured, and the conductivity mechanism of the material was also examined. The ASTM D 257 and IEC 60093 measurement methods were used for these tests. The equipment was designed to measure up to a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and the electrode structure was designed to maintain the thickness and temperature uniformity of the sample. The conductivity of the sample decreased with temperature, and the samples reached saturation within 500s, after which the conductivity leveled off. By analyzing the current density and the electric field, we can well explain the electric conductivity behavior of our sample with the Schottky mechanism.

  • When first commissioned, the 1.6 km span 275kV Severn Crossing Conductor experienced large amplitude vibrations in certain wind conditions, but without ice or rain, leading to flashover between the conductor phases. Wind tunnel tests undertaken at the time identified a major factor was the lift generated in the critical Reynolds number range in skew winds. Despite this insight, and although a practical solution was found by wrapping the cable to change the aerodynamic profile, there remained some uncertainty as to the detailed excitation mechanism. Recent work to address the problem of dry inclined cable galloping on cable-stayed bridges has led to a generalised quasi-steady galloping formulation, including effects of the 3D geometry and changes in the static force coefficients in the critical Reynolds number range. This generalised formulation has been applied to the case of the Severn Crossing Conductor, using data of the static drag and lift coefficients on a section of the stranded cable, from the original wind tunnel tests. Time history analysis has then been used to calculate the amplitudes of steady state vibrations for comparison with the full scale observations. Good agreement has been obtained between the analysis and the site observations, giving increased confidence in the applicability of the generalised galloping formulation and providing insight into the mechanism of galloping of yawed and stranded cables. Application to other cable geometries is also discussed.

  • Considering the tendency of development of electrification vehicles, development and verification of new evaluation technology is needed because of new technology applications. Recently, as the battery package is set outdoors of an electric vehicle, such vehicles are exposed to corrosive environments. Among major components connected to the battery package, rust prevention of high-voltage cables and connectors is considered the most important issue. For example, if corrosion of high voltage cable connectors occurs, the corrosion durability assessment of using an electric vehicle will be different from general environmental corrosion phenomena. The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion mechanism of high voltage cable connectors of an electric vehicle under various driving environments (road surface vibration, corrosion environment, current conduction by stray current, etc.) and develop an optimal rust prevention solution. To improve our parts test method, we have proposed a realistic test method to reproduce actual electric vehicle corrosion issues based on the principle test.

  • Recently, the demand for the optical cable is rapidly growing because the number of internee user increases and high speed internet data transmission is required. But the present optical cable winding systems has some serious problems such as pile-up and collapse of cable usually near the flange of the bobbin in the process of the cable winding. To reduce the pile-up collapse in a cable winding systems, a new guiding system is developed for a high-speed self-align cable winding. First of all, the winding mechanism was analyzed and synchronization logics for the motions of winding, traversing, and the guiding were created. A prototype cable winding systems was manufactured to validate the new guiding system and the suggested logic. Experiment results showed that the winding system with the developed guiding system outperformed the system without the guiding system in reducing pile-up and collapse in the high-speed winding.
