In this work, effects of carbon matrix on sliding friction and wear behavior of four kinds of C/C have been investigated against 40 Cr steel ring mate. Composite A with rough lamination carbon matrix (RL) shows the highest volume loss and coefficient of friction, while composite D with smooth lamination/resin carbon matrix (SL/RC) shows the lowest volume loss. The worn surface of composite A appears smooth, whereas that of composite C with smooth lamination carbon (SL) appears rough. The worn surface of composite D appears smooth under low load but rough under high load. Atomic force microscope images show that the size of wear particles on the worn surface is also dependent on the carbon matrix.

The composites were fabricated, respectively, using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ and using 61[vol.%] SiC-39[vol.%] $ZrB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by hot pressing annealing at $1650[^{\circ}C]$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ were not observed in this microstructure. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed SiC(6H, 3C), $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ and $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal phase on the Liquid-Phase-Sintered(LPS) $SiC-TiB_2$, and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. $\beta\rightarrow\alpha-SiC$ phase transformation was occurred on the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite. The relative density, the flexural strength and Young's modulus showed the highest value of 98.57[%], 249.42[MPa] and 91.64[GPa] in $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $7.96{\times}10^{-4}[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite at $25[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity of the $SiC-TiB_2$ and $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite was all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]$ to $700[^{\circ}C]$. The resistance temperature coefficient of composite showed the lowest value of $1.319\times10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composite in the temperature ranges from $100[^{\circ}C]$ to $300[^{\circ}C]$ Compositional design and optimization of processing parameters are key factors for controlling and improving the properties of SiC-based electroconductive ceramic composites.
Al-Si-SiC composite powders with intra-granular SiC particles were prepared by a gas atomization process. The composite powders were mixed with Al-Zn-Mg alloy powders as a function of weight percent. Those mixture powders were compacted with the pressure of 700 MPa and then sintered at the temperature of $565-585^{\circ}C$. T6 heat treatment was conducted to increase their mechanical properties by solid-solution precipitates. Each relative density according to the optimized sintering temperature of those powders were determined as 96% at $580^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders (composition A), 97.9% at $575^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 5 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition B), and 98.2% at $570^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 10 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition C), respectively. Each hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance test of those sintered samples was conducted. As the content of Al-Si-SiC powders increased, both hardness and tensile strength were decreased. However, wear resistance was increased by the increase of Al-Si-SiC powders. From these results, it was confirmed that Al-Si-SiC/Al-Zn-Mg composite could be highly densified by the sintering process, and thus the composite could have high wear resistance and tensile strength when the content of Al-Si-SiC composite powders were optimized.
TiB2 and TiC were prepared from the mixture of metal titanium, boron and graphite powders in Argon atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis method. The sintered properties of TiB2-TiC composite as a function of TiC content and sintering temperature were investigated in TiB2 matrix. The sintered properties were the most excellent at 10 wt% TiC content in TiB2-TiC composite. The relative density, M.O.R strength, hardness and fracture toughness of TiB2-10 wt% TiC composite sintered at 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa were 98.6%, 634 MPa, 2128.1 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 4.09 MN/m3/2, respectively.
The tribological behaviour of monolithic SiC as well as SiC-TiC and SiC-TiC-$TiB_2$ particulate composite materials has been investigated in unlubricated oscillating sliding tests against $Al_2O_3$ at temperature in the range from room temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$. At temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$ the wear rate of the systems with the composite materials was up to 20 times lower than the wear of the $Al_2O_3$/SiC system and was dominated by the oxidation of the titanium phases. At $600^{\circ}C$ the oxidation rate of the TiC and -TEX>$TiB_2$ grains becomes predominant resulting in an enhanced wear rate of the composite rate of the TiC and TiB2 grains becomes predominant resulting in an enhanced wear rate of the composite materials. The coefficient of friction shows similar values for all materials of investigation, increasing from 0.25…0.3 at room temperature to 0.7…0.8 $600^{\circ}C$. The wear of the $Al_2O_3$/SiC system is mainly abrasive at temperatures above room temperature and is characterised by an enhanced wear of the alumina ball at $600^{\circ}C$.

We studied on the nondestructive evaluation of the elastic wave signal of SiC ceramics and SiC/SiC composite ceramics under monotonic tensile loading. The elastic wave signal of cross and unidirectional SiC/SiC composite ceramics were obtained by pencil lead method and bending test. It was applied for the time-frequency method which used by the discrete wavelet analysis algorithm. The time-frequency analysis provides time variation of each frequency component involved in a waveform, which makes it possible to evaluate the contribution of SiC fiber frequency. The results were compared with the characteristic of frequency group from SiC slurry and fiber. Based on the results, if it is possible to shift up and design as a higher frequency group, we will can make the superior material better than those of exiting SiC/SiC composites.
Based on the structure feature of a tree, a cylindrical $Ti_2AlC$/graphite layered composite has been fabricated through heat treating a graphite column and six close-matched thin wall $Ti_2AlC$ cylinders bonded with the $Ti_2AlC$ powders at $1300^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure. SEM examination reveals that the bond interlayers between cylinders or that between cylinder and column are not fully dense without any crack formation. During the compressive test, the strain of the $Ti_2AlC$/graphite layered composite is about twice higher than that of the monolithic $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic, and the compressive strength of the layered composite is 348 MPa. The layered composite show the noncatastrophic fracture behaviors due to the debonding and shelling off of the layers, which are different from the monolithic $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic. The mechanism of the improved deformation capacity and noncatastrophic failure modes are attributed to the presence of the central soft graphite column and cracks deflection by the bond interlayers.
Ultra-fine TiC/Co composite powder was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction process without wet chemical processing. The starting powder was prepared by milling of titanium dioxide and cobalt oxalate powders followed by subsequent calcination to have a target composition of TiC-15 wt.%Co. The prepared oxide powder was mixed again with carbon black, and this mixture was then heat-treated under flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase, mass and particle size of the mixture during heat treatment were investigated using XRD, TG-DTA and SEM. The synthesized oxide powder after heat treatment at 700$^{\circ}C$ has a mixed phase of TiO$_2$ and CoTiO$_3$ phases. This composite oxide powder was carbothermally reduced to TiC/Co composite powder by the solid carbon. The synthesized TiC/Co composite powder at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 9 hours has particle size of under about 0.4 $\mu$m.
In this study, FeAl based intermetallic matrix composites reinforced with in-situ synthesized TiC particles were fabricated by an in-situ liquid mixing process. The microstructures, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of the in-situ liquid mixing processed composite were investigated and compared with the vacuum suction casting processed composite. The results showed that the in-situ formed TiC particles exhibited fine and uniform dispersion in the liquid mixing processed composite, while significant grain boundary clustering and coarsening of TiC particles were obtained by the vacuum suction process. It was also shown in both types of composites that the hardness and bending strength were increased with the increase of the TiC volume fractions. Through the study of fractography in the bending test, it was considered that the TiC particles prohibited brittle intergranular fracture of FeAl intermetallic matrix by crack deflections. Because of the uniformly distributed fine TiC particles, the bending strength of the liquid mixing processed composite was superior to that of the casting processed composite.

There are lots of soft ground improvement methods which is consist of different materials. In the analysis and design, composite ground method is usually regarded. Composite ground method considers the area replacement ratio as a key parameter to combine the physical and mechanical characteristics of tow different material. In this study, using composite material consist of three different materials which have different diameters, series of specific gravity test were performed according to KS F 2308, to investigate the applicability of composite ground method. As a result, it is found that composite material which is consist of fine grained soil and granular soil has a high applicability of composite ground method. This result means that, in estimating of ground properties of composite material which is consist of similar fine grained material such as cement mixing etc., composite ground method has a less applicability.
