  • The curing behavior of glass fiber reinforced epoxy prepregs based on Bisphenol-A (BPA) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The total heat of reaction(${\Delta}H_{total}=280.3J/g$) was determined based on the results of the dynamic heating scanning experiments. Isothermal experiments were carried out at $110{\sim}130^{\circ}C$, and it was observed that the maximum conversion and the maximum reaction rate were increased as temperature increased. Also Kamal equation was applied to analyze autocatalytic reaction of epoxy prepregs. The higher temperatures, the greater reaction rate constants ($k_1$, $k_2$). Theoretical values were calculated by these reaction rate constants and compared with experimental values. And it was confirmed that they were in reasonable agreement. At the beginning of the reaction, the experimental data and theoretical prediction were shown the same tendency, but at the end of reaction, the experimental data were smaller than theoretical predicted values due to reaction rates controlled by diffusion.

  • This study was conducted to optimize the water homogenization process of mandarin orange peel for colored rice. Four variables were used to determine the optimum conditions for homogenization speed, time, temperature, and water volume with a five level central composite design and response surface methodology. The process was optimized using the combination of EI and b values of rice coated with water extract of the mandarin orange peel. The effect of water volume was the most significant compared to the other variables on the quality of water homogenate. The regression polynomial model was a suitable (p>0.05) model by lack-of-fit analysis showing high significance. To optimize the process, based on surface response and contour plots, individual contour plots for the response variables were superimposed. The optimum conditions for manufacturing water extract from mandarin orange was with 8,500 rpm homogenization speed, 2.8 min time, $53^{\circ}C$ temperature, and 42 mL water volume with the maximum of restricted variables of EI above 400 and h value above 24.

  • This paper investigates physical properties, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the epoxy resin with different curing methods and postcuring conditions at room temperature or cryogenic temperature (LN2). According to the results in this paper, first, it is found that the physical properties, electrical and mechanical characteristics of the epoxy resin are largely affected by the interior reaction temperature on the curing. Thus, in the fabrication of the sample, several excellent characteristics of the sample are obtained by controlling the interior reaction temperature of the epoxy resin. Second, the sample having optimal electrical and mechanical characteristics is obtained for the repetitive post-curing method at 100c in view point of the post-curing conditions of the epoxy resin. Third, it appears that tan and characteristics at LN2 temperature are about half of those at room temperature. Fourth, it appears that the dielectric strength of the epoxy resin at LN2 temperature is higher by about 0.6-1.0 MV/cm than that at room temperature. The heat-aging of the epoxy resin due to the micro-defect and excess fever-movement have been noticed to affect dielectric strength at LN2 temperature more significantly than at room temperature.

  • Attempts were made to improve mechanical properties of zirconia-based electrolyte by preparing yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia/alumina composite. It was performed by precipitating Yag precursor in aqueous m-zirconia slurry. The powder was separated and then followed by heat treatment with expecting yttria to react with m-$ZrO_2$ to give yttria stabilized zirconia and alumina to be dispersed homogeneously. When 17.8wt% Yag(6.3mol% $Y_2O_3$) was used, fracture toughness and strength were substantially improved from 1.44MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 270Mpa for YZ8Y to 3.62MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 447MPa respectively, but electrical conductivity at $^{\circ}$C in air was decreased from 0.126 to 0.057${\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$. It seemed due to the presence of small amount of tetragonal zirconia. But when 21.58wt% Yag(8.0mol% $Y_2O_3$) was added, fracture toughness of 2.93MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and flexural strength of 388MPa were obtained with electrical conductivity of ${\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$.

  • Passive microwave sea surface temperatures (SST) were validated in the Northwest Pacific using a total of 102,294 collocated matchup data between Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) / GPM Microwave Sensor(GMI) data and oceanic in-situ temperature measurements from March 2014 to December 2016. A root-mean-square (RMS) error and a bias error of the GMI SST measurements were evaluated to $0.93^{\circ}C$ and $0.05^{\circ}C$, respectively. The SST differences between GMI and in-situ measurements were caused by various factors such as wind speed, columnar atmospheric water vapor, land contamination near coastline or islands. The GMI SSTs were found to be higher than the in-situ temperature measurements at low wind speed (<6 m/s) during the daytime. As the wind speed increased at night, SST errors showed positive bias. In addition, other factors, coming from atmospheric water vapor, sensitivity degradation at a low temperature range, and land contamination, also contributed to the errors. One of remarkable characteristics of the errors was their latitudinal dependence with large errors at high latitudes above $30^{\circ}N$. Seasonal characteristics revealed that the errors were most frequently observed in winter with a significant positive deviation. This implies that SST errors tend to be large under conditions of high wind speeds and low SSTs. Understanding of microwave SST errors in this study is anticipated to compensate less temporal capability of Infrared SSTs and to contribute to increase a satellite observation rate with time, especially in SST composite process.

  • Resin-modified glass ionomers were introduced in 1988 to overcome the problems of moisture sensitivity and low early mechanical strengths of the conventional glass ionomers, and to maintain their dinical advantages. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bi-axial fracture strength of four resinmodified glass-ionomers(Fuji II LC, Vitremer, Dyract, VariGlass), one resin composite material(Z-100), and one conventional glass-ionomer(Fuji II). Three specimens of each material and shade combination were made according to the manufacturers' instructions. Materials were condensed into metal mold with a diameter of 10mm and a thickness of 2.0mm and pressed between two glass plates. Resin-modified glass ionomers were polymerized using a Visilux II light curing unit by irradiating for 60 seconds from both sides, and conventional glass ionomer was cured chemically. After specimens were removed from the molds, surfaces were polished sequentially on wet sandpapers up to No. 600 silicone carbide paper. The specimens were thermocycled for 2,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ distilled water. After thermocycling, bi-axial fracture strengths were measured using a compressive-tensile tester(Zwick 1456 Z020, Germany) with the cross head speed of 0.5mm/minute. The results were as follows: 1. Two factors of the kind and color of materials had a main effect on bi-axial fracture strength (p<0.01), and bi-axial fracture strength was influenced significantly by the kinds of materials (p<0.01). But there was no significant interaction between two variables of the kind and color of materials (p>0.05). 2. Comparing the mechanical properties of the materials, the elastic modulus of Z100 was higher than any other material, and there was no difference in the displacement at fracture among materials. The bi-axial fracture strength of Z100 was significantly higher than any other material, and that of resin-modified glass ionomers was significantly higher than that of conventional glass ionomer (p<0.05). 3. In the same material group, the color of material had little influence on the mechanical properties.

  • Maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted polypropylenes (PP) (MAH-g-PP) were prepared by changing MAH content and styrene monomer (SM)/MAH mole ratio with different type PP, using a twin screw extruder. The types of PP were isotatic PP (iPP), block PP (bPP), and random PP (rPP) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was used as an initiator. The graft degree of MAH was confirmed by the existence of carbonyl group (C=O) stretching peak at $3100cm^{-1}$ of FTIR spectrum. Thermal properties of MAH-g-PP and PP/MAH-g-PP/pulp composites were investigated by DSC and TGA. There was no district change in thermal properties of PP/MAH-g-PP/pulp composites. Based on tensile properties and SEM pictures for fractured surface of PP/MAH-g-PP/pulp composites, MAH-g-rPP was the best as the compatibilizer and optimum formulation was MAH content of 1.0 wt%, SM/MAH mole ratio of 1.0, and melt index (MI) of 25 g/10 min. The rheological properties of the composites were investigated by a dynamic rheometer. The complex viscosity, shear thinning effect, and water uptake incresed with pulp content.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to monitor extraction characteristics of electron donating ability and organoleptic properties for ethanol extracts from Chrysanthemum petals, thereby determining optimum extraction conditions. A central composite design was applied to investigate effects of solvent per sample $(X_1)$, ethanol concentration $(X_2)$ and extraction time $(X_3)\;at\;60^{\circ}C$ on dependent variables such as electron donating ability $(Y_1)$, organoleptic color $(Y_2)$ and organoleptic aroma $(Y_3)$ of the extracts. Second-order models were employed to generate 4-dimensional response surfaces for qualitative and quantitative aspects of ethanol extracts. Coefficients of determination $(R_2)$ of the models for dependent variables were ranged from 0.8180 to 0.9696. Optimum extraction conditions for each variable were 50 mL/g, 61% and 16 hrs in electron donating ability, 88 mL/g, 21% and 16 hrs in organoleptic color, 55 mL/g, 73% and 19 hrs in organoleptic aroma, respectively. The optimum condition ranges for maximized characteristics of ethanol extracts were $65{\sim}78\;mL/g,\;90{\sim}100%\;and\;15{\sim}25\;hrs$. Predicted values at the optimum conditions were in good agreement with experimental values.

  • The quality characteristics of Korean rice cakes (Karedduk) with a mixture of fructooligosaccharide (95%) and AA (acetylated adipate distarch) added, after 2 and 24 hours of storage at $5^{\circ}C$, were investigated. A central composite design was used for arrangement of treatment. Different levels of fructooligosaccharide (95%), 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12%, were added to dry rice flour. In addition, different levels of AA, 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2%, were added to the same dry rice flour. The texture properties analysis using a Texture Analyzer revealed that the springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, gumminess, adhesiveness, and hardness were significantly different. The effect of retarding retrogradation of Korean rice cakes (Karedduk) with added mixtures of fructooligosaccharide (95%) and AA showed an increasing trend as the amount of fructooligosaccharide (95%) and AA increased. Overall, the instrumental texture properties were highly correlated with the sensory characteristics. These results suggest that adding a mixture of 6% fructooligosaccharide (95%) and 1.2% AA to Korean rice cakes (Karedduk) is effective for retarding retrogradation.

  • PTC thermistor are characterized by an increase in the electrical resistance with temperature. The PTC materials of middle Curie point were produced or that of high Curie point (above $200^{\circ}C$), it was determined that compositional modifications of $Pb^{2+}$ for $Ba^{2+}$ produce change sin the Curie point to higher temperature. PTC ceramic materials with the Curie point above $120^{\circ}C$ were prepared by adding $PbTiO_3$, PbO or $Pb_3O_4$ into $BaTiO_3$. Thereby, adding $Pb^{2+}$ into $BaTiO_3$-based PTC material to improve Tc was studied broadly, however, weal know that PbO was poisonous and prone to volatilize, then to pollute the circumstance and hurt to people, so we should dope other innocuous additives instead of lead to increase Tc of composite PTC material. In order to prepare lead-free $BaTiO_3$-based PTC with middle Curie point, the incorporation on $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$ into $BaTiO_3$-based ceramics was investigated on samples containing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 50mol% of $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$. $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$ was compounded as standby material by conventional solid-state reaction technique. The starting materials were $Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2}TiO_3$, $BaCO_3$, $TiO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powder, and using solid-state reaction method, too. The microstructures of samples were investigated by SEM, DSC, XRD and dielectric properties. Phase composition and lattice parameters were investigated by X-ray diffraction.
