Fine (~0.09 $\mu$m) $\beta$-SiC Powders with 3.3wt% of large (~0.44$\mu$m) $\alpha$-SiC of $\beta$-SiC particles (seeds) added were hotpressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ using $Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and CaO as sintering aids and then annealed at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h to enhance grain growth. The resultant microstructure and polytypes were analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).Growth of $\beta$-SiC with high density of microtwins and formation of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains consisting of $\alpha$-SiC domain sandwiched between $\beta$-SiC domains were found in both specimens. When large $\alpha$-SiC (mostly 6H) seeds were added, the $\beta$-SiC transformend preferentially to the 6H polytype. In contrast, when large $\beta$-SiC (3C) seeds were added, the fine $\beta$-SiC transformed preferentially to the 4H polytype. Such results suggested that the polytype formation in SiC was influenced by crystalline form of seeds added as well as the chemistry of sintering aids. The ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ interface played and important role in the formation of elongated grains as evidenced by presence of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains with high aspect ratio.

In order to fulfil the requirements of the various performance profiles of ceramic cutting tools, six different SiC-based ceramics have been fabricated by hot-pressing (SiC--${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites) or by hot-pressing and subsequent annealing (monolithic SiC and SiC-TiC composites). Correlation between the annealing time and the corresponding microstructure and the mechanical properties of resulting ceramics have been investigated. The grain size of both ${Si}_3 {N}_4$and SiC in SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites increased with the annealing time. Monolithic SiC has the highest hardness, SiC-TiC composite the highest toughness, and the SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composite the highest strength among the ceramics investigated. The hardness of SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites was relatively independent of the grain size, but dependent on the sintered density. The cutting performance of the newly developed SiC-based ceramic cutting tools will be described in Part 2 of this paper.
$SiC_f$/SiC composites with whiskers and pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coated whiskers in the matrix were fabricated for enhancement of the fracture behaviors by the whisker growing assisted chemical vapor infiltration (WA-CVI) process, respectively. $SiC_f$/SiC composites were also prepared by the conventional CVI process as reference material. The mechanical properties and fracture behaviors were analyzed by comparison of the two types of composites prepared by WA-CVI and conventional CVI. The densities of $SiC_f$/SiC composites were in the range of $2.6{\sim}2.65g/cm^3$. The flexural strengths of composite with whiskers and with those coated by PyC were 650 MPa and 600 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength of composites with whiskers was ${\sim}285$ MPa.

Insulation of rooftop is one of the major performance to energy-saving construction. Further, waterproofing performance is also important. For such a reason, it is need to develop waterproofing method containing thermal insulation property. This study was wanted to evaluate thermal insulation performance about the composite waterproofing method of thermal supplement type that is developed recently. As a result of waterproofing performance test, every test item was showed over the performance standards of KS (Korean (Industrial) Standards). And the result of thermal insulation performance test, the highest temperature in the styrofoam box was $25.91^{\circ}C$, the bubble sheet box was $17.28^{\circ}C$, the insulation sheet box was $15.47^{\circ}C$ and the waterproofing sheet box of thermal supplement type was $24.11^{\circ}C$. In observations of thermal bridges of sheet's joint, thermal bridges was not identified at the sheet's joint. As a result, composite waterproofing method of thermal supplement type is interpreted to have thermal insulation performance.

This study developed a dry composite module-type deodorization facility with Twisting airflow changes and two forms (catalyst, adsorbent) within one module. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the reduction efficiency of odor substances C8H7N and C9H9N. The device combines UV oxidation using TiO2, catalytic oxidation using MnO2, and adsorption using A/C in five different methods. Data analysis of experimental results utilized the statistical package program Python 3.12. The program applied frequency analysis of odor removal efficiency, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc tests, with statistical significance determined by p-value to ensure reliability and validity of the measurements. Results indicated that the highest removal efficiency of C8H7N and C9H9N was achieved by the UV+A/C method, suggesting the superior effectiveness and efficiency of the developed device. Combining multiple processes and technologies within one module enhanced odor treatment efficiency compared to using a single method. The device's modularity allows for flexibility in adapting to various sewage treatment scenarios, offering easy maintenance and cost-effective deodorization. This composite reaction module device can apply multiple technologies, such as biofilters, plasma, activated carbon filters, UV-photocatalysis, and electromagnetic-chemical systems. However, this study focused on UV-photocatalysis, catalysts, and activated carbon filters. Ultimately, the research demonstrates the practical applicability of this innovative device in real sewage treatment operations, showing excellent reduction efficiency and effectiveness by integrating UV oxidation, TiO2 photocatalysis, MnO2 catalytic oxidation, and A/C adsorption within a modular system.
The effect of SiC particle size on the microstructures and mechanical properties of A1$_2$O$_3$-SiC composite was investigated. Two types of SiC powders having average particle sizes of 0.15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used. The grain growth in the specimen containing 0.15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC was effectively inhibited due to the fine SiC particles. However, after the formation of some abnormal grains, fast and exaggerated grain growth occurred which led to the microstructure of large grains with irregular shape. Fracture strength decreased due to the abnormal large grains. On the other hand, for specimen containing 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC showed normal grain growth behavior from initial sintering stage. Large SiC particles, however, effectively inhibited exaggerated grain growth after nucleation of a few abnormal grains. As a consequence, microstructure consisted of homogeneous elongated grains. In the A1$_2$O$_3$-2.5SiC(0.15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$)-2.5SIC(3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) composite fabricated by mixing the two types of SiC powder, abnormal grain growth occurred. However, the good fracture strength was maintained regardless of microstructural changes in this specimen.
Surface composite layers of 1.9~2.9 mm in thickness were fabricated by depositing metamorphic powders on a carbon steel substrate and by irradiating with a high-energy electron beam. In the surface composite layers, 48~64 vol.% of $Cr_{2}B$ or $Cr_{1.65}Fe_{0.35}B_{0.96}$ borides were densely precipitated in the austenite or martensite matrix. These hard borides improved the hardness of the surface composite layer. According to the otentiodynamic polarization test results of the surface composites, coatings, STS304 stainless steel, and carbon steel substrate, the corrosion potential of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was highest, and its corrosion current density was lowest, while its pitting potential was similar to that of the STS304 steel. This indicated that the overall corrosion resistance of the surface composite fabricated with 'C+' powders was the best among the tested materials. Austenite and martensite phases of the surface composites and coatings was selectively corroded, while borides were retained inside pits. In the coating fabricated with 'C+' powders, the localized corrosion additionally occurred along splat boundaries, and thus the corrosion resistance of the coating was worse than that of the surface composite.
In this study, we prepared an ionic liquid composite solid polymer electrolyte (PEO-LiTFSI-$Pyr_{14}TFSI$) with poly(ethylen oxide), lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide by blending-cross linking process. Although the PEO-LiTFSI-$Pyr_{14}TFSI$ composite solid polymer electrolyte displayed a small peak at 4.4 V, it had high electrochemical oxidation stability up to 5.7 V. Ionic conductivity of the PEO-LiTFSI-$Pyr_{14}TFSI$ composite solid polymer electrolyte increased with increasing temperature from $10^{-6}S\;cm^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$ to $10^{-4}S\;cm^{-1}$ at $70^{\circ}C$. To investigate the electrochemical properties, the PEO-LiTFSI-$Pyr_{14}TFSI$ composite solid polymer electrolyte assembled with $LiFePO_4$ cathode and Li-metal anode. At 0.1 C-rate, the cell delivered $40mAh\;g^{-1}$ for $30^{\circ}C$, $69.8mAh\;g^{-1}$ for $40^{\circ}C$ and $113mAh\;g^{-1}$ for $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. The PEO-LiTFSI-$Pyr_{14}TFSI$ solid polymer electrolyte exhibited good charge-discharge performance in Li/SPE/$LiFePO_4$ cells at $50^{\circ}C$.
Si-C composite with hollow spherical structure was synthesized using ultrasonic treatment of organosilica powder formed by hydrolysis of phenyltrimethoxysilane. The prepared powder was pyrolyzed at various temperatures ranging from 900 to 1300 $^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere to obtain optimum conditions for Li-ion battery anode materials with high capacity and cyclability. The XRD and elemental analysis results show that the pyrolyzed Si/C composite at 1100 $^{\circ}C$ has low oxygen and nitrogen levels, which is desirable for increasing the electrochemical capacity and reducing the irreversible capacity of the first discharge. The solid Si-C composite electrode shows a first charge capacity of $\sim$500 mAhg$^{-1}$ and a capacity fade within 30 cycles of 0.93% per cycle. On the other hand, the electrochemical performance of the hollow Si-C composite electrode exhibits a reversible charge capacity of $\sim$540 mAhg$^{-1}$ with an excellent capacity retention of capacity loss 0.43% per cycle up to 30 cycles. The improved electrochemical properties are attributed to facile diffusion of Li ions into the hollow shell with nanoscale thickness. In addition, the empty core space provides a buffer zone to relieve the mechanical stresses incurred during Li insertion.

SiCw/Al composite material is especially attractive because of their superior specific strength, specific stiffness, corrosion fatigue resistance, creep resistance, and wear resistance compared with the corresponding wrought Al alloy. In this study, Fatigue crack growth behavior and fatigue crack path morphology(FCPM) of SiC whisker reinforced Al 6061 alloy with 25% SiC volume fraction and Al 6061 allay were performed. Result of the fatigue crack growth test sgiwed that fatigue crack growth rate of SiCw/Al 6061 composite was slower than that of Al 6061 matrix therefore it was confirmed that Sic whisker have a excellent fatigue resistance. And Al 6061 matrix had only FCPM perpendicular to loading direction. On the other hand SiCw/Al 6061 composite had three types in fatigue crack path morphology. First type is that both sides FCPM of artificial notch are perpendicular to loading direction. Second type is that a FCPM in artifical notch has slant angle to loading direction and the other side FCPM is perpendicular to loading direction. Third type is that both sides FCPM of notch have slant angle to loading direction. It was considered that this kinds of phenomena were due to non-uniform distribution of SiC whisker and confirmed by SEM observation for fracture mechanism study.
