SiC 강화 CFRP 복합재의 파괴거동에 관한 음향방출 적용 (AE Application for Fracture Behavior of SiC Reinforced CFRP Composites)

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

  • The characterization of monolithic SiC and SiCf/SiC composite materials fabricated by NITE and RS processes was investigated in conjunction with the detailed analysis of their microstructure and density. The NITE-SiC based materials were fabricated, using a SiC powder with average size of 30 nm. RS- SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated with a complex slurry of C and SiC powder. In the RS process, the average size of starting SiC particle and the blending ratio of C/SiC powder were $0.4\;{\mu}m$ and 0.4, respectively. The reinforcing materials for /SiC composites were BN-SiC coated Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber, unidirectional or plain woven Tyranno SA SiC fiber. The characterization of all materials was examined by the means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. The density of NITE-SiCf/SiC composite increased with increasing the pressure holding time. RS-SiCf/SiC composites represented a great decrease of flexural strength at the temperature of $1000\;^{\circ}C.$

Application of AE for Fracture Behavior Evaluation of Carbon-fiber/SiC Reinforced Plastic Composites

  • In this study, SiC powder was added to twill woven carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites to improve its mechanical properties. An acoustic emission (AE) frequency analysis method was suggested for the prediction of failure behaviors. Tensile tests were conducted and the fracture characteristics of each component of the SiC reinforced composite were evaluated using AE. The results showed that SiC powder improved the strength of twill woven CFRP composites and the fracture behavior of the SiC reinforced CFRP composite and its crack extension could be effectively evaluated on the basis of the specific AE frequency bands which are 100 to 228 kHz and 428 to 536 kHz upon the resin failure and 232 to 424 kHz due to addition of SiC powder and 576 to 864 kHz at the fiber breakage.

알콕사이드로부터 $Al_2O_3-SiC$ 복합재료의 제조 및 특성 (Synthesis and Properties of $Al_2O_3-SiC$ Composites from Alkoxides)

  • Dispersed type Al2O3-SiC composite powders were synthesized from Al-isopropoxide (Al(i-OC3H7)3) and Si(OC2H5)4 precursors by hydrolysis of mixed alkoxides and carbothermal reaction method. The characteristics of the synthesized (dispersed type) Al2O3-SiC composite powders were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and particle size analyzer. Carbothermal reaction to produce Al2O3-SiC composite was completed in 10h at 135$0^{\circ}C$ on 3~4㎤/s (0.21~0.28cm/s) of H2 flow rate and about 1/1 of carbon/oxides(=SiO2+Al2O3) molar ratio. The synthesized powders were observed to have the mean particle size range of 0.4~1.26${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and showed finer particle size with increasing SiC content.

  • High reaction heat evolved from the oxidation of Al was used to synthesize SiC, which might be difficult to be formed by SHS. Al2O3-SiC composite powder was easily manufactured using KNO3 as an ignition and reaction catalyst. Unreacted Si and C were observed after reaction dependent upon the composition of starting powders, reaction atmosphere and relative densities of compacted bodies. The unreacted carbon could be removed by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and the remaining Si could be removed by dissolving in NaOH solution. The final powder particles were smaller than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size.

  • The advantages of Thermal sprayed coatings as a replacement for cast iron liners are reduced weight, better heat transfer and reduced cost. One of the most important performance attributes of a cylinder bore coating is its wear resistance, since it must survive the abrasive sliding of both the piston rings and the piston skirt. In this study, composite powders were prepared by ball milling of Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with SiC particles. The concentrations of SiC were 40 and 60wt%. The composite powders were sprayed using Metco-9MB plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at 500℃ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to improve with heat treatment and superior to the commercially available G.C.I.(gray cast iron). AlSiMg-40SiC heat-treated coatings showed the best wear resistance in this study.

100℃ 이상에서 작동하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 나피온/Mordenite 복합체 막의 새로운 제조 방법 (A New Preparation Method of Nafion/Mordenite Composite Membrane for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell above 100℃ Operation)

  • 퍼플루오르설포닐 플로라이드 나피온 레진과 mordenite를 이용하여 $100^{\circ}C$ 이상의 고온에서 작동하는 고분자 전해질형 연료건지용 전해질 막을 제조하고, 물리적 특성, proton전도도 및 단위 전지의 성능을 측정하였다. 나피온/mordenite복합체 막은 나피온 레진을 용융한 후, mordenite를 무게별로 첨가하여 제조하였다. 고온 영역에서 proton 전도도를 측정한 결과, mordenite 함량이 증가할수록 층상 구조를 갖는 mordenite내에 존재하는 층간수의 느린 탈수 속도 때문에 proton 전도도는 증가하였다. 또한, 단위 전지 성능 측정 결과로부터, $130^{\circ}C$의 작동 온도에서 l0wt% mordenite를 함유하고 있는 복합체 막이 전체 영역에 걸쳐 가장 높은 성능을 보임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 같은 조건에서. l0wt% mordenite가 함유된 복합체 막 내부에 존재하고 있는 수분이 다른 조성의 막보다 더 많이 존재하게 되어, 복합체 막의 이온 전도도를 유지하기 때문이다. 따라서, 나피온/mordenite복합체 막은 $100^{\circ}C$이상에서 작동하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 전해질 막으로서 적합하다고 생각된다.

복합 단열 매트 보강 폴리우레탄 폼의 열적 성능 및 내충격성 평가 (Thermal Performance and Impact Resistance Evaluations of Composite Insulation Mat Reinforced Polyurethane Foam)

  • 본 연구에서는 액화 천연 가스 운반선 단열 시스템에 적용되는 폴리우레탄 폼(Polyurethane foam, PUF)의 열적 성능 및 내충격성을 향상시키기 위한 목적으로, PUF에 복합 단열 매트를 보강하였다. 복합 단열 매트는 극저온 환경에서 운용이 가능한 케블라, 에어로겔, 그리고 크라이오겔 매트를 선정하였다. 열적 성능은 $20^{\circ}C$의 상온에서 열전도율을 측정하였으며, 내충격성은 $20^{\circ}C$의 상온 및 $-163^{\circ}C$의 극저온에서 30 J의 충격에너지로 낙하 충격 시험을 수행하여 측정하였다. 측정된 열전도율은 유효 열전도율 이론 값을 통해 보강되지 않은 PUF와 비교하였으며, 내충격성은 접촉력, 접촉 시간, 그리고 흡수에너지를 평가하였다. 실험 결과 크라이오겔 복합 매트 보강 시 가장 우수한 열적 성능을 나타났으며, 내충격성은 에어로겔 복합 매트 보강 시 가장 우수하게 나타났다.

Effect of SiC Nanorods on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of SiC Composites Fabricated by Chemical Vapor Infiltration

  • To reduce residual pores of composites and obtain a dense matrix, SiCf/SiC composites were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVI) using SiC nanorods. SiC nanorods were uniformly grown in the thickness direction of the composite preform when the reaction pressure was maintained at 50 torr or 100 torr at 1,100℃. When SiC nanorods were grown, the densities of the composites were 2.57 ~ 2.65 g/㎤, higher than that of the composite density of 2.47 g/㎤ for non-growing of SiC nanorods under the same conditions; grown nanorods had uniform microstructure with reduced large pores between bundles. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal conductivity (room temperature) of the SiC nanorod grown composites were 412 ~ 432 MPa, 13.79 ~ 14.94 MPa·m1/2 and 11.51 ~11.89 W/m·K, which were increases of 30%, 25%, and 25% compared to the untreated composite, respectively.

Rapid Synthesis and Consolidation of Nanostructured Ti-TiC Composites from TiH2 and CNT by Pulsed Current Activated Heating

  • $TiH_2$ nanopowder was made by high energy ball milling. The milled $TiH_2$ and CNT powders were then simultaneously synthesized and consolidated using pulsed current activated sintering (PCAS) within one minute under an applied pressure of 80 MPa. The milling did not induce any reaction between the constituent powders. Meanwhile, PCAS of the $TiH_2$-CNT mixture produced a Ti-TiC composite according to the reaction ($0.92TiH_2+0.08CNT{\rightarrow}0.84Ti+0.08TiC+0.92H_2$, $0.84TiH_2+0.16CNT{\rightarrow}0.68Ti+0.16TiC+0.84H_2$). Highly dense nanocrystalline Ti-TiC composites with a relative density of up to 99.7% were obtained. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC produced by PCAS were also investigated. The hardness of the Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC composites was higher than that of Ti. The hardness value of the Ti-16 mole% TiC composite was higher than that of the Ti-8 mole% TiC composite without a decrease in fracture toughness.
