A long-term energy system in the future is expected to be based on the ideal circulation system between water and hydrogen in the sense that the hydrogen prepared from water eventually returns to water again after its use. Currently, with respect to the hydrogen energy system, it is predicted that the turning-point at which the production cost of hydrogen will become to be lower than that of fossil fuels would be after 2010. However, fuel cell technology would be able to be practically used for the applications to the transportation vehicles and small-scale power sources from 2004, and therefore, an efficient construction of the infrastructure covering hydrogen production and supply systems would be required with short-/mid-term technologies for the $CO_2$ reduction associated with fossil fuel utilization. In this paper, the hydrogen quantity available in domestic market has been estimated focusing on the hydrogen by-produced from domestic industries, and also the infrastructure for hydrogen-driven vehicles like fuel cell cars has been reviewed.
Climate change is one of the major issues in both the developed and developing world. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission is one of the implications for climate change. It is increasing rapidly. Although the emission is much less when compared to the rest of the world, Ethiopia has also faced this global issue. The major source for GHG emission in Ethiopia is agriculture. Therefore, the agriculture sector has to be given more attention in Ethiopia. To overcome the problem, Climate-Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy has been initiated. One way of executing this target is to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly pathway to use agricultural byproducts. Sugarcane is one of the major plants in Ethiopia. Its byproducts are bagasse, molasses, and press mud. Since it is a waste product, it is economical and creates a sustainable and green environment by reducing GHG emissions. Sugarcane byproducts have versatile applications like as fuel, as cement replacing material, as a mitigation for expansive soils, as biosorbent for the treatment of water and wastewater and also as a wood material. However, Ethiopia has not used this byproduct massively as it is readily available. This paper reviews the possible applications of sugarcane byproducts to mitigate climate change.
Tea seed extract, a byproduct of tea processing, contains two kaempferol glycosides, camelliaside A and camelliaside B. Kaempferol was produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of glycosides. Optimum reaction conditions were investigated. $Pectinex^{(R)}100L$ was effective, producing kaempferol in 48 hrs. Optimum temperature and pH were $40^{\circ}C$ and 4, respectively. Ratio of substrate and enzyme affected the yield. Under optimum conditions, 1.6g kaempferol per 1 kg tea seed extract was produced and 80% of kaempferol precipitated. This result shows that kaempferol could be produced mildly and effectively using tea-processing byproduct.

The antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts (PM) from the fruit of Prunus mume after liquor manufacturing were determined in a chicken breast meat system. When PM was added to chicken breast meat, 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) value at day 3 was decreased by about $25\%$ compared to control meat without PM. PM did not significantly affect the color of chicken meat compared to the control. The amounts of volatile aldehydes and hydrocarbons were decreased by the addition of PM. Hexanal was the predominant volatile compound in the control, accounting for the majority of total volatiles; PM reduced the amount of hexanal to $81\%$of that in the control meat at 3 days.
A natural deodorizing agent (NDA) was made using pine cone byproduct, and its effects on malodor emission and composting were analyzed in this study. NDA was manufactured by mixing pine cone byproduct with three species of microorganisms and water containing mineral nutrients and molasses, and then by incubating for 48 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. Lab scale experiments were done with three treatment groups, T1 (control, sawdust treatment), T2 (microorganisms and sawdust treatment group), and T3 (NDA and sawdust treatment group). During composting, temperatures reached over $55^{\circ}C$, a minimum temperature for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms. No differences were found in physicochemical composition of compost among treatments. However, it was observed that over usage of NDA could obstruct temperature increase, since the biodegradation rate of organic matter of NDA was relatively low, Nitrogen loss due to ammonia gas emission, which normally happens during composting, was reduced by using NDA, and hence the nitrogen level of final compost was higher in T3 than in others. During experiment, it was found that ammonia gas emission was entirely lasted through compositing duration, but the $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ gases were produced only at early stage of composting. The ammonia concentration trapped in $H_2SO_4$ solution during 31 days of composting in T1, T2 and T3 was 12,660mg/L, 11,598mg/L and 7,367mg/L, respectively, showing distinguishable reduction of ammonia gas emission in T3. The emissions of $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ gases were also remarkably reduced in T3. Based on these obtained results, usage of the deodorizing agent made with pine cone byproduct could reduce the emission of malodor during composting, without any deterioration of compost quality.
This study was carried out to know the effect of the oriental medicinal plants byproduct containing vitamin E and 0.1% antibiotics (T1) and the oriental medicinal plants byproduct containing vitamin E and the replacing antibiotics by 0.03% herb extracts (T2) and 0.1% aminolevulinic acid (T3) on production performance of finishing hog and its meat qualities. There were no significant differences in the daily weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion rate values between all treatment groups. However, the T2 group tends to have a higher daily weight gain (g/day) than the other groups (p>0.05). The T2 group showed lower total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol contents (114.71 and 68.09 mg/dl, respectively) than the control in the blood serum (p<0.001), and all the treated groups of oriental medicinal plants byproduct and vitamin E increased HDL-cholesterol and decreased LDL-cholesterol contents in the blood serum. Content of vitamin E in muscles from the group T1, T2 and T3 (2.11, 2.21 and 2.18 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively) showed higher levels than those of control. The presence of antibiotics (chlortetracycline) in hog loin meat were detected (0.08 ppm) in control sample. However, there was no antibiotic in other treated hog loin meats (T1, T2 and T3, respectively). The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and volatile basic nitrogen values of the groups T2 (0.06 mg MA $kg^{-1}$ and 11.21 mg%, respectively) and T3 (0.05 mg MA $kg^{-1}$ and 8.23 mg%, respectively) were significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of control in loin meat. However, there was no significant difference between treated samples (T1, T2 and T3, respectively) and control in cooking loss and drip loss.
In this study, the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of chicken press ham not fed with citrus byproduct (T0) and fed with citrus byproduct (T1) were compared. There was not a significant difference in moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, crude fiber, Hunter's $L^*$ (lightness), $a^*$ (redness), $b^*$ (yellowness), hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, shear force, water holding capacity and pH between T0 and T1. There was not a significant difference between T0 and T1 in terms of the chicken ham's VBN (volatile basic nitrogen) content for the first three weeks of storage, but after the fourth week of storage, the VBN content was 15.1 and 13.7 mg% for T0 and T1, respectively, which implies that feeding citrus byproduct significantly reduced the VBN content. There was not a significant difference between T0 and T1 in terms of the chicken press ham's TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) value for the first two weeks of storage. However, the TBARS value was 0.31 and 0.22 mg malonaldehyde/kg for T0 and T1 during the third week of storage, and 0.49 and 0.32 mg malonaldehyde/kg for T0 and T1 during the fourth week of storage. There was not a significant difference between T0 and T1 in terms of the chicken press ham's TPC (total plate counts) for the first three weeks of storage, but after the fourth week of storage, the TPC was 4.96 and 4.72 log CFU/g for T0 and T1, respectively, which implies that T1 showed a significantly lower TPC than T0. T1 showed significantly higher aroma, taste, and palatability of the chicken press ham than T0, but there was a not significant difference in texture and juiciness between T0 and T1.

The present study investigated effect of supplementation of agricultural byproduct on growth performance and blood parameters of broiler chicken using meta-analysis. Total 11 studies (32 experiments) where broiler feeding trials with agricultural byproducts were included were employed in analysis. All studies were conducted at commercial farm placed in South Korea and under commercial feeding programs. Growth phases were divided into two groups based on slaughter day. For growth performance, body weight, body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion rate (feed/gain) were investigated. Carcass weight, dressing percentage, liver and spleen weight, blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride, HDL (High density lipoprotein) and LDL (Low density lipoprotein) cholesterol contents in blood were investigated. Body weight of broiler of treatment was significantly increased than the control (P<0.05), regardless of growth phase. However, body weight gain during late growth phase did not show significant difference between control and treatment. Effect evaluated by random effect model on feed intake was not significant. Effect on feed conversion rate during early growth phase was significantly negative (P<0.05). Effects on carcass weight, dressing percentage, liver and spleen weight were not significant in random effect model. Effect on abdominal fat was significantly negative (P<0.05). In blood parameters, significant effects were found at total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol (P<0.05). Effect on HDL cholesterol only was positive effect, and others were negative.

This study developed a natural seasoning (NS) and characterized its food components. Hydrolysate from Alaska Pollock Theragra chalcogramma heads and sea tangle Laminaria japonica byproduct were obtained by incubating them with Neutrase for 4 h. NS was prepared by mixing sorbitol 2%, salt 2%, ginger powder 0.04%, garlic powder 0.2%, onion powder 0.2% and inosine monophosphate (IMP) 0.1% based on concentrated hydrolysates from Alaska pollock head and sea tangle byproduct before vaccum filtering. The proximate composition of NS was 82.7% moisture, 9.0% crude protein, and 5.1% ash. It had a higher crude protein content than commercial anchovy sauce (CS), it was lower in moisture and ash. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibiting activity of NS were 90.1% and 88.9%, respectively, which were superior to those of CS. The free amino acid content and total taste value of NS were 1,626.0 mg/100 mL and 165.86, respectively, which were higher than those of CS. According to the results of taste value, the major free amino acids were glutamic acid and aspartic acid. In the sensory evaluation, the color and taste of NS were superior to those of CS. No difference in fish odor between NS and CS was found.
Antimicrobial activity of both fresh Prunus mume and Prunus mume liqueur byproduct (PLB), generated after producing Prunus mume liqueur were examined against various pathogeinc bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Bacillus cereus KCCM 11341, Staphylococcus aureus KCCM 12255, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 21541, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, and Shigella sonnei. PLB showed strong antibacterial effects against tested pathogenic bacteria.L. monocytogenes ATCC 19115, B. cereus KCCM 11341, S. sonnei, and E. coli O157:H7 were not detected in trytpic soy broth containing 1% of prunus mume or PLB after 24-hour incubation at $37^{\circ}C$, respectively. Prunus mume showed higher antimicrobial activities than that of PLB against tested pathogens.
