Preparation of Shark Byproduct Extract and Gellan Gum based Antibacterial Film Containing Green Tea Extract

  • In this study, we tried to examine the possibility of developing a dental product such as tooth decay prevention and oral hygiene by manufacturing a natural polymer film for oral use. Natural polymer films were prepared from shark byproduct extract (SBE) and gellan gum (GG). As an antibacterial substance, the antibacterial activity of green tea extract against tooth decay-causing bacteria was measured. An film was prepared by adding green tea extract to the composition of SBE and GG. The mechanical, solubility, moisture content and antibacterial function of the prepared film were investigated in detail. Also, the incorporation of GTE into the SBE/GG film improved the physical performance of the film. Increasing the content of GTE improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. Formulation of antimicrobial SBE/GG film containing green tea extract was established and these results evidently showed potential for cavity prevention products application.

Nutritional value and in situ degradability of fruit-vegetable byproducts and their feeding effects on performance of growing Hanwoo steers

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate nutritional value and in situ degradability of fruit-vegetable byproducts and their feeding effects on performance of growing Hanwoo steers. Methods: Nutritional value and in situ degradability of cabbage, Chinese cabbage and fruit-vegetable byproducts were assessed. In vivo feeding trial was also performed for 12 weeks. Thirty-six growing steers were randomly allocated into three groups according to body weight (BW) and age in 12 pens (4 replications/treatment) and assigned to one of the three dietary treatments: control (byproduct 0%), FV-B (fruit-vegetable byproduct 20%), and CA-B (cabbage peel 15% plus Chinese cabbage peel 15%, total byproduct 30%). Results: The crude protein contents of cabbage, Chinese cabbage and fruit-vegetable byproducts were 18.69%, 20.20%, and 10.07%, respectively. Concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were higher in cabbage (22.31%) and Chinese cabbage (28.83%) than fruit-vegetable (13.94%). Higher concentrations of non-fiber carbohydrate were observed for fruit-vegetable (66.72%) than cabbage (44.93%) and Chinese cabbage byproducts (24.69%). The effective degradability (ED) of both dry matter (DM) and NDF for fruit-vegetable byproduct (DM, 84.69%; NDF, 85.62%) was higher (p<0.05) than cabbage (DM, 68.47%; NDF, 55.97%) and Chinese cabbage byproducts (DM, 68.09%; NDF, 54.22%). The DM intake was not different among treatments because the amount of feed was kept constant according to the BW of growing steers to prevent overweight during the growing period. The average daily gain during the whole experimental period was not different among treatments (1.26, 1.25, and 1.34 kg/d for control, FV-B, and CA-B). The ED of both DM and NDF degradability of the total mixed ration (TMR) diets were very similar among treatments. Feed conversion ratio during the whole period showed no significant difference among treatments. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that fruit-vegetable and cabbage byproducts up to 20% and 30% (as fed basis), respectively can be included in TMR diets for growing beef cattle.

Effects of Dietary Inclusion of Red Ginseng Byproduct on Growth, Body Composition, Serum Chemistry, and Lysozyme Activity in Juvenile Olive Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • This study examined the effects of the dietary inclusion of various concentrations of red ginseng byproduct (RB) and a mixture containing red ginseng byproduct, garlic extract, yeast and filler (CR) on the growth, body composition, serum chemistry, and lysozyme activity of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Juvenile fish (n= 630) weighing 5.0 g were randomly distributed into 21 180 L flow-through tanks (30 fish/tank). Seven experimental diets were prepared in triplicate: a control diet without additive, and diets containing 0.5, 1 and 2% concentrations of RB (RB-0.5, RB-1, RB-2) and CR (CR-0.5, CR-1, CR-2) at the expense of wheat flour. After an 8-week feeding trial, serum chemistry and lysozyme activity of fish were measured. Mean weight gain was significantly higher in fish fed the control diet than in fish fed the RB and CR diets. The dietary inclusion of RB and CR reduced feed utilization. Mean serum glucose and triglyceride (TG) levels were higher in fish fed the control diet than in fish fed the other diets. Mean glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) levels of fish fed the control and RB-2 diets were higher than those of fish fed the RB-0.5, RB-1, CR-1, and CR-2 diets. Mean lysozyme activity levels of fish fed the RB-0.5 and RB-1 diets were higher than those of fish fed the control and CR diets. The results of this study indicate that red ginseng byproduct may be utilized as an immunostimulant rather than as a growth promoter for juvenile olive flounder. Dietary inclusion of 0.5% red ginseng byproduct effectively improved serum glucose, GPT, TG, and lysozyme activity of the fish in this study.

  • Rhizopus nigricans produces 11.alpha.-hydroxyprogesternoe with a unidentified byproduct, which is hardly separated. Results of chromatography, IR and NMR spectroscopy identified the byproduct to be 11.alpha.-hydroxy-allopregnane-3,20-dione. R. nigricans was found to transform progesternoe into a monoform intermediate, 11.alpha.-hydroxyprogesterone, from which 11.alpha.-hydroxy-allopregnane-3,20-dione and 6.betha., 11.alpha. - dihydroxyprogesterone were formed respectively by 5.alpha.-reduction and 6.betha.-hydroxylation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the dietary supplementation of citrus byproduct (CBP) on the growth performance, feed utilization, and innate immune responses of juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus under low water temperatures (11-15℃). Dietary L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate was replaced with graded CBP levels at 0 (Con), 25 (CBP25), 50 (CBP50), 75 (CBP75), and 100% (CBP100). Triplicate groups of juvenile olive flounder were handfed with one of the diets twice a day for 42 days. The growth performance and feed utilization of fish fed with diet containing levels of CBP75 or CBP100 increased significantly compared to those of fish with fed Con. Dietary CBP supplementation increased the protein efficiency ratio in fish. There was no significant differences in innate immune responses between groups, even though CBP supplementation tended to increase. These findings indicate that CBP could be used as a vitamin C source and improve the growth performance of juvenile olive flounder under low water temperatures.

돈분과 유기성 부산물을 혼합한 혐기소화에서 바이오가스 생산 (Biogas Production from Anaerobic Co-digestion Using the Swine Manure and Organic Byproduct)

  • 가축분뇨와 유기성 부산물의 혼합형태가 바이오가스 발생에 미치는 영향을 규명하고 자 시험을 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 모돈분을 원료로 했을 때 가스발생량은 건물함량 5%에서 최대 7 L/d, 내용물 용적대비 0.389 L/$L{\cdot}d$ 이었으며, 고형물 10%에서는 최대 10 L/d, 0.556 L/$L{\cdot}d$ 이었다. TS 10% 일 때 최대 가스발생량이 TS 5%의 약 1.4배가 되었다. 2. 유기성 부산물을 혼합하였을 때 옥수수 사일리지에서 고형물 함량을 10%로 한 시험구에서 가스발생량은 1.11 L/$L{\cdot}d$이다. 대조구의 가스 발생량 0.556 L/$L{\cdot}d$과 비교하면 약 2배 가까이 되었다. 또한 음식물쓰레기를 첨가하였을 때 고형물 함량 10%에서 최대 18.17 L/d, 용적대비 1.01 L/$L{\cdot}d$로 나타났다. 3. 유기건물함량 대비 바이오가스 발생량은 모돈분만을 사용한 대조구에서 최대 203L/kg odm ${\cdot}d$, 음식물쓰레기를 첨가한 시험구에서 최대 216 L/kg odm${\cdot}d$, 옥수수사일리지 를 첨가한 시험구에서 최대 362 L/kg $odm{\cdot}d$로 나타났다. 4. 메탄가스의 농도는 대조구가 초반에 40%가 나왔고 후반에 약 70% 정도였으며 옥수수사일리지를 첨가한 시험구에서 초반에 52% 후반에 약 70%, 음식물쓰레기를 첨가한 시험구에서 초반에 약 40% 후반에 약 70%로 일반적인 농도보다 높았다. 5. 소화액의 성분분석결과 모든 시험구의 소화액은 작물이 필요로 하는 영양분을 골고루 함유하고 있어 액비로 이용할 수 있으리라 판단된다.

돈분뇨 농축액비와 부산물액비 혼합시용이 배추의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Mixture Application of Concentrated Pig Slurry and Byproduct Liquid Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Chinese Cabbage)

  • 본 연구는 농축산 부산물을 이용한 환경친화적 유기액비의 제조와 시용 기술을 개발하여, 채소의 고품질 친환경 안전농산물 생산기술을 확립하고자 돈분뇨 처리과정에서 한외여과막을 통과하고 역삼투막에서 역류되어 나오는 농축액비에 부족한 성분을 부산물, 화학비료와의 혼합액비가 배추 생육과 수량, 토양에 미치는 영향을 검토하고자 수행하였다. 시험구는 대조구의 검정시비량를 기준으로 막분리 농축액비(CS)와 부산물액비구(BF), 막분리 농축액비(CS)와 부산물액비 혼합액비시용구(CS%+BF), 농축액비와 부산물액비 혼합에 질소를 보충한 유기-화학비료 혼합액비시용구(CS+BF+N), 대조구로 화학비료 추비시용구(CF) 등 5처리를 완전임의 3반복으로 배치하였다. 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 막분리 농축액비(CS)는 발효과정 중 pH의 변화가 적었으나 부산물액비는 발효초기 pH가 7.0 부근에서 호기발효 후 2일 부터 pH가 지속적으로 낮아져 발효 후 3일에서 7일 사이에 5.0 정도로 저하되었다가 발효 후 9일 부터 상승하여 발효 후 14일에 약산성에서 중성 부근에 도달하였다. 부산물액비의 EC는 발효 시작 시점에 8dS/m에서 발효와 함께 계속 상승하여 발효 종료시점인 30일에는 15dS/m로 도달하였다. 2. 막분리 농축액비(CS)는 질소함량은 $1,528mg/{\ell}$, 칼리함량은 $6,025mg/{\ell}$로 질소 함량에 비하여 칼리 함량이 4배나 높은 불균형적인 양분조성를 나타내었다. 그러나 부산물액비는 T-N 함량은 $1,760mg/{\ell}$, $K_2O$ 함량이 $1,921mg/{\ell}$로 질소와 칼리 성분의 균형이 맞아 추비용비료로 적합한 성분특성를 나타내었다. 3. 주당엽수는 대조구 58.7개에 비하여 유기액비-화학비료 맞춤액비 시용구(CF+BF+N)에서 65.0개로 높았으나 막분리 농축액비(CS)의 엽수는 49.2개로 매우 낮았다. 주중과 구중은 막분리 농축액비처리구에서는 불균형적인 양분조성으로 2.33, 1.82kg로 대조구의 3.29, 2.43kg보다 각각 29, 25% 감소되었다. 부산물액비(BF), 혼합액비 처리구(CS+BF)에서의 주중과 구중은 화학비료 대조구와 대등하였다. 맞춤액비시용구(CS+BF%+N)에서의 주중과 구중은 3.55, 2.68kg로 대조구보다 각각 8, 10% 높았다. 4. 배추식물체와 토양의 무기성분 함량은 막분리 농축액비(CS)처리구에서 $K_2O$ 함량은 높게 나타났다. 맞춤액비구는 T-N 함량이 다른 처리구 보다 높은 경향이었다.

Production of curdlan with agro-industrial byproduct by Agrobacterium sp. ATCC 31749

  • Effect of carbon sources including agro-industrial byproduct on cell growth and production of curdlan by Agrobacterium sp. ATCC 31749 was investigated. Maximal production of curdlan was obtained when the carbon source was sucrose. The conversion rate of curdlan from 2% (w/v) sucrose was 59%. Glucose, mannose and maltose were also found to be good carbon sources for production of curdlan. Production of curdlan increased up to 3% (w/v) glucose as the carbon source and then decrease as the concentration of glucose increased. The major components of agro-industrial byproduct (AIB) were glucose, maltose, and maltose, and maltotriose. Agrobacterium sp.ATCC 31749 utilized up to 25% (v/v) AIB and produced curdlan with 29.8g/1.

모노클로라민과 디메틸아민 농도가 NDMA 생성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Monochloramine and Dimethylamine Concentrations on the NDMA Formation)

  • 모노클로라민과 디메틸아민 농도와 관련 있는 염소, 질소, 탄소 비율에 따라서 소독부산물인 NDMA 생성을 여러 조건에서 조사하였다. 디메틸아민/모노클로라민 비율이 1에 근접 할 경우에 NDMA 생성이 높게 나타났으며 아주 작거나 너무 클 경우 생성은 급속하게 감소하였다. 염소/질소 비율이 증가함에 따라 NDMA 생성도 증가하는 것으로 조사되어 염소 성분이 생성에 중요한 지표가 됨을 알 수 있었다. 접촉시간에 따른 NDMA 생성 영향을 조사한 결과, 본 연구에서는 72시간에서 급속하게 증가하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 기존연구에서와 같이 본 연구에서도 pH는 NDMA 생성에 중요한 영향을 주는 요소로 조사되었다.

The Current Status and Prospect of Sericultural Byproduct Industry in China

  • Sericulture is a traditional agro-industry, which involves mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, has made great contributes to the human civilization. With the development of national economy and modem technology, mulberry and silkworm are being used to develop products with functionality besides the traditional cocoon production in China. In this paper, we brief the current developing situation of sericultural byproducts with functionality in the following aspects. (1) Functional products from silkworm larvae: silkworm powder, white muscardine silkworm, isolation and purification of anti-bacterial proteins from the larvae and production of medically valuable substances by Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) vector. (2) Utilization of silkworm feces: for pillow and for isolation of chlorophyll etc. (3) Production of valuable Chinese traditional medicine like Cordyceps sinensis with pupae, functional utilization of pupa protein and chitin. (4) Silk as additives to cosmetics, silk food and medical materials. (5) Functional utilization of mulberry: cultivation of edible fungus on mulberry shoots as medium, mulberry fruit drinks, mulberry tea, etc. The prospect of sericultural byproduct industry in China is also discussed.
