Continuous dry anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes (30% TS, Total Solids) comprised of food waste and paper was performed under mesophilic condition. During the operation, hydraulic retention time (HRT) was decreased as follows: 150 d, 100 d, 60 d, and 40 d, which corresponded to the solid loading rate of 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.5 kg TS/$m^3$/d, respectively. Volumetric biogas production rate ($m^3$/$m^3$/d) increased as HRT decreased, and the highest biogas production rate of 3.49${\pm}$0.31 $m^3$/$m^3$/d was achieved at 40 d of HRT. At this HRT, high volatile solids (VS) reduction of 76% was maintained, and methane production yield of 0.25 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved, indicating 67.4% conversion of organic solid waste to bioenergy. The highest biogas production yield of 0.52 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved at 100 d of HRT, but it did not change much with respect to HRT. For the ease feed pumping, some amount of digester sludge was recycled and mixed with fresh feed to decrease the solid content. Recirculation volume of 5Q was found to be the optimal in this experimental condition. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of microorganisms at mesophilic-dry condition was 2.66, 1.94, and 1.20 mL $CH_4$/g VS/d using acetate, butyrate, and propionate as a substrate, respectively.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of addition of food waste in brown water for anaerobic hydrogen production. Batch experiment was carried out to determine appropriate food waste to brown water mixing ratio. Maximum hydrogen yield of $6.92mmol\;H_2/g\;COD_{removed}$ was obtained at 70% food waste and 30% brown water. Semi-pilot scale reactor was operated based on result of batch experiment. Semi-pilot reactor operated, mixing 70% food waste and 30% brown water showed significant increment in butyric acid concentration. B/P (Butyric to propionic acid ratio) which is considered as governing factor for hydrogen production was found high (52.64). Maximum hydrogen yield of $25.03mmol\;H_2/g\;COD_{removed}$ was obtained. Result of this study concluded that mixing of food waste to brown water at appropriate ratio assists in enhanced hydrogen fermentation.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the addition of activated charcoal (AC) and oak charcoal on the ruminal fermentation characteristics, nutrient utilization in Korean native goats. Compared to reference diet, digestibility of dry matter, and crude protein in AC and charcoal diets tended to incraese. However, any tendency in ruminal degradation of crude fat was not observed. Ruminal degradation of NDF in AC diets tended to be more increased than that in non-AC diet. Although it was not significant, ADF tended to be increased in AC and charcoal diets. AC and charcoal did not affect the ruminal pH and ammonia-N. Concentration of total VFA and butyrate tended to be increased by adding AC and charcoal(p<0.05). Although it was not significant, acetate/propionate ratio tended to decreased in AC and charcoal diets. Although there appeared some beneficial effects in adding AC and charcoal to ruminant diets in this study, more works could be needed with AC before we can make clear conclusion on use of AC and charcoal in the ruminant diets.
This study aimed to estimate the effects of replacing Mushroom By-Product (MBP) with Tofu By-Product (TBP) on the chemical composition, microbes, and rumen fermentation indices of Fermented Diets (FDs). The basal diet was formulated using MBP, TBP, rice bran, molasses, and inoculants. The MBP in the basal diet was replaced with TBP at 0, 5, and 10% on Dry Matter (DM) basis for the experimental diets. The experimental diets were fermented at $39^{\circ}C$ for 144 h. Chemical composition, pH, microbes, and rumen fermentation indices of the FDs were analyzed. With increasing TBP replacement, crude protein content of FDs increased (L, P < 0.001), whereas crude ash content decreased (L, P = 0.002). Lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus subtilis contents in the TBP-replaced FDs were higher than those in the control (P < 0.05), whereas pH level and mold count were lower (P < 0.05). With increasing TBP replacement, in vitro rumen digestibility of DM (L, P = 0.053) and neutral detergent fiber (L, P = 0.024) increased, wheres rumen pH changed (P = 0.026) quadratically. Rumen total volatile fatty acid (L, P = 0.001) and iso-butyrate contents (Q, P = 0.003) increased with increasing TBP replacement. In conclusion, this study indicates that the replacement of MBP with TBP could improve the quality of FD.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on in vitro rumen fermentation at various dose levels of 0 (T1), 100 (T2), 200 (T3), and 300 (T4) ppb in a wheat straw-based buffalo diet. The results show that the truly degradable dry matter, truly degradable organic matter, gas production, microbial biomass production and partitioning factor values in the control group (T1) were higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The total volatile fatty acids, acetate, propionate, and butyrate values in the control group (T1) were higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The partitioning factor value in the control group (T1) was higher (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The partitioning factor values of the T2 and T3 groups were higher (p < 0.05) than that of the T4 group. There was no significant variation in the partitioning factor value between the T2 and T3 group. The acetate : propionate (A : P) ratio in the control group (T1) was lower (p < 0.05) than those of the T2, T3, and T4 groups. The A : P ratio in the T2 group was lower (p < 0.05) than those of the T3 and T4 groups. It was concluded that different levels of AFB1 contamination in feed significantly affect the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics. Thus, these findings could help to determine the influences of AFB1 in a wheat straw-based buffalo diet. Additionally, it is necessary to manage AFB1 contamination in ruminants.
This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of goat and cow milk yogurts containing high-exopolysaccharide fermented by Streptoccous thermophilus LFG isolated from kefir. The pH of cow milk yogurt was higher than that of goat milk yogurt. The contents of lactic acid was greater in goat milk yogurt (743.9-1043.8 mg/100 g) than in cow milk yogurt (441.6-709.9 mg/100 g). The numbers of survival lactic acid bacteria were the greatest in goat milk yogurt fermented by Str. thermophilus LFG. Viscosity was greater in cow and goat milk yogurts cultured by Str. thermophilus LFG than in yogurts by Str. thermophilus TH3. Syneresis of yogurt fermented by Str. thermophilus LFG was 9.6-16.1% and 28.2-31.8% in yogurt fermented by Str. thermophilus TH3 after 10 d storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Flavor compounds identified from goat milk were acetone, ethylbutanoate, ethyl-3-methylbutyrate, ethyl-2-butenoate and ethylhexanoate, and those from cow milk were ethylbutanoate, acetone, 2-heptanone and acetoin. Flavor compounds detected from goat milk and cow milk yogurts were acetic acid, butanoic acid, butanol, diethylcarbinol, acetone, diacetyl, decane, 2-methyl-3-pentanone, hexanal, 2-heptanone, acetoin, benzaldehyde, dimethyldisulfide, and dimethyltrisulfide. In sensory evaluation, overall preference and texture values were higher in goat milk yogurt fermented by Str. thermophilus LFG than in cow milk yogurts and the yogurt fermented by mixed culture resulted in the highest score.
In a previous research, it has been found that it could be possible to increase the partial pressure of hydrogen and hydrogen yield by scavenging the $CO_2$ from the heads pace of reactor. In this research, the positive and negative effects of the $CO_2$ scavenging especially on the fate of by-products were investigated by a batch experiment. Production and conversion of by-products had critical relationships with hydrogen evolution and consumption. The maximum hydrogen fraction in the headspace was increased from 66.4 to 91.2% by removing the $CO_2$ in the headspace and the degradation rate of glucose was also enhanced. The removal of $CO_2$ effectively hindered the homoacetogenesis but caused several negative phenomena. The degradation of ethanol, one of the main products, was inhibited by the high partial pressure of hydrogen and/or the absence of $CO_2$. Also it was observed that other by-products such as propionate, propanol, acetone, etc. could not be degraded further after produced from glucose. On the other hand, solventogenesis was not observed in spite of the high hydrogen partial pressure apart from previous researches and it might hinder the excess production of acetate, which could cause overall inhibition. From this research, it could be implicated that the $CO_2$ scavenging method could be recommended if the fermentation was purposed to produce hydrogen and ethanol.
The effect of dietary supplementation of sodium salt of isobutyric acid in low protein (10% CP) wheat straw based diet on nutrient utilization and rumen fermentation was studied in ruminally fistulated male crossbred cattle. The study included a 7 day metabolism and a 3 day rumen fermentation trials. The cattle were distributed into two equal groups of 4 each. The animals of control group were fed a basal diet consisting of wheat straw, concentrate mixture and green maize fodder in 40:40:20 proportion whereas branched chain volatile fatty acid (BCFA) supplemented group received a basal diet + isobutyric acid at 0.75 percent of basal diet. The duration of study was 36 days. The feed intake between experimental groups did not differ significantly and the average total DMI (% BW) was 2.01 and $2.28kg\;day^{-1}$ in control and BCFA supplemented diets. The dietary supplementation of BCFA improved (p<0.05) the DM, OM, NDF and cellulose digestibility by 4.46, 6.63, 10.57 and 11.31 per cent over those fed control diet. The total N retention on BCFA supplementation was improved (p<0.01) due to decreased (p<0.05) urinary N excretion. The concentrations of ruminal total N was 37.07 and $34.77mg\;100ml^{-1}$ in control and BCFA fed groups, respectively. Dietary supplementation BCFA significantly (p<0.01) reduced the ruminal ammonia N concentration as compared to control and the mean values ($mg\;100ml^{-1}$) were 13.18 and 9.42 in control and BCFA fed groups. The total VFA concentration was higher (p<0.01) in BCFA supplemented group (101.14 mM) than the control (93.05 mM). Among the VFAs, the molar proportion of acetate was higher (p<0.01) in BCFA supplemented group (71.07 mM) as compared to control (64.98 mM). However, the concentration of propionate and butyrate remained unchanged. Amino acids composition of bacterial hydrolysates was similar in both the groups. Ruminal outflow rate of liquid digesta was higher (p<0.01) in BCFA fed group ($67.56l\;day^{-1}$) than control ($52.73l\;day^{-1}$). It is concluded that the dietary supplementation of Na-salt of isobutyric acid in low protein diet improved the nutrient utilization and ruminal fermentation characteristics.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different litter mixture compositions on bedding system temperature, pH and volatile fatty acid and ammonia-N ($NH_3$-N) content, and the serum physico-chemical parameters and growth indices of calves. Thirty-two Limousin calves ($280{\pm}20kg$) were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 8 for each group) according to the bedding system used: i) control with soil only (CTR); ii) mixture with 50% paddy hulls (PH), 30% saw dusts (SD), 10% peat moss (PM) and 10% corn cobs (CC) (TRT1); iii) mixture with 15% PH, 15% SD, 10% PM, 40% CC, and 20% corn stover (CS) (TRT2); iv) mixture with 30% PH, 10% PM, 40% CC, and 20% CS (TRT3). The litter material combinations of different treatments were based on the cost of bedding system materials in China. The cost of four treatments from low to high: Control$NH_3$-N level (271.83 to 894.72 mg/kg) was lowest for TRT1 (p<0.0001) and highest for TRT2 (p<0.0001). The acetate, propionate and butyrate levels were highest for the control group (p<0.0001). In all the groups, the pH value (6.90 to 9.09) increased at the beginning and later remained stable at below 9.09. The temperature of deep litter increased at the first week and reached the maximum ($42.1^{\circ}C$) on day 38. 3,5,3'-Triiodothyronine ($T_3$) levels in the TRT1 group animals (p<0.0001) were lower than those in the control and TRT2 animals. 3,5,3',5'-Tetraiodothyronine ($T_4$) in the TRT1 group (p = 0.006) was lower than that in the other treatment groups. Cortisol (COR) in the control and TRT1 group was lower (p<0.0001) than that in the TRT2 and TRT3 groups. Corticosterone (CORt) in the control group was higher (p<0.0001) than that in the treatment groups. The findings indicate that the deep litter bedding systems provided better conditions for animal health and growth performance compared with the control system. Furthermore, the litter composition of TRT1 was found to be optimal among the three treatment groups.
An in vitro fermentation was conducted to determine the effects of hainanmycin on protein degradation and populations of ammonia-producing bacteria. The substrates (DM basis) for in vitro fermentation consisted of alfalfa hay (31.7%), Chinese wild rye grass hay (28.3%), ground corn grain (24.5%), soybean meal (15.5%) with a forage: concentrate of 60:40. Treatments were the control (no additive) and hainanmycin supplemented at 0.1 (H0.1), 1 (H1), 10 (H10), and 100 mg/kg (H100) of the substrates. After 24 h of fermentation, the highest addition level of hainanmycin decreased total VFA concentration and increased the final pH. The high addition level of hainanmycin (H1, H10, and H100) reduced (p<0.05) branched-chain VFA concentration, the molar proportion of acetate and butyrate, and ratio of acetate to propionate; and increased the molar proportion of propionate, except that for H1 the in molar proportion of acetate and isobutyrate was not changed (p>0.05). After 24 h of fermentation, H10 and H100 increased (p<0.05) concentrations of peptide nitrogen and AA nitrogen and proteinase activity, and decreased (p<0.05) $NH_3$-N concentration and deaminase activity compared with control. Peptidase activitives were not affected by hainanmycin. Hainanmycin supplementation only inhibited the growth of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, which is one of the species of low deaminative activity. Hainanmycin supplementation also decreased (p<0.05) relative population sizes of hyper-ammonia-producing species, except for H0.1 on Clostridium aminophilum. It was concluded that dietary supplementation with hainanmycin could improve ruminal fermentation and modify protein degradation by changing population size of ammonia-producing bacteria in vitro; and the addition level of 10 mg/kg appeared to achieve the best results.
