Intracellular recordings of oscillatory firing (bursting activity) were obtained from Purkinje cells (PCs) in rat cerebellar slices. Apamin inhibited post-burst hyperpolarizations (PBHs) progressively and finally terminated oscillatory firing activity of PCs. Apamin did not affect the amplitude or duration of the after-hyperpolarization (AHP) between spikes within the burst. In the voltage clamp mode, apamin shifted the whole-cell, quasi-steady state I/V relationship in an inward direction and abolished the zero slope resistance (ZSR) region by blocking outward current. Nickel ($Ni^{2+}$) terminated oscillatory activity and also abolished the ZSR region. However, $Ni^{2+}$ did not have progressive blocking action on the post-burst hyperpolarization before it blocked oscillatory activity. $Ni^{2+}$ blocked an inward current at potentials positive to approximately -65 mV, which was responsible for the ZSR region and outward current at more negative potentials. These data indicated that oscillatory activity of PCs is sustained by a balance between a slow $Ni^{2+}$-sensitive inward current and an apamin-sensitive outward current in the region of ZSR of the whole-cell I/V curve.

In this paper, we evaluate synchronization techniques suitable for high-speed ATM satellite communications with a transmission rate of 155Mbit/s, and propose optimal algorithms that improve the tracking performance, where QPSK is selected for a modulation scheme, and the receiver is operated in burst mode. Based on these asumptions, we proposed modified algorithms and architectures for automatic frequency control(AFC), carrier recovery(CR), and symbol timing recovery(STR) for burst acquisition. Analysis is performed under AWGN environments with respect to the number of required symbol, steady-state stability, and hardware implementation for the proposed algorithms.

In this study, we have developed a composite pressure vessel that is compact and can store refrigerant at high pressure to increase the refrigerant volume. The composite pressure vessel is made of aluminum-based duralumin, which has high rigidity and excellent elongation in the inner liner, considering the characteristics of products in the aerospace and defense industry, where the safety of the applied product is considered as a priority. High strength carbon fiber was applied to the outside. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed product, burst test and cycling test were carried out. In burst test, an excellent safety margin equivalent to 2.7 times the operating pressure was obtained. In cycling test, a stable failure mode in which 'pre-burst leak' occurs is proved and the soundness of the product is proved.
The objective of this study was to derive approximate closed-form error rates for M-ary burst symbol transmission (MBST) of dual-hop adaptive decode-and-forward (ADF) cooperative relay systems over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. Within a burst, there are pilot symbols and data symbols. Pilot symbols are used for channel estimation schemes and each relay node's transmission mode selection schemes. At first, our focus was on ADF relay systems' error-events at relay nodes. Each event's occurrence probability and probability density function (PDF) were then derived. With error-event based approach, we derived a tractable form of PDF for combined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Averaged error rates were then derived as approximate expressions for arbitrary link SNR with different modulation orders and numbers of relays. Its accuracy was verified by comparison with simulation results.

The objective of study on composite cylinder for alternative fuel vehicle is to develop safe, efficient, and commercially viable, on-board fuel storage system for the fuel cell vehicle or natural gas vehicle that use highly compressed gaseous fuel such as hydrogen or natural gas. This study presents the whole procedure of development and certification of a type 3 composite cylinder of 207bar service pressure and 70 liter water capacity, which includes design/analysis, processing of filament winding, and validation through various testing and evaluation. Design methods of liner configuration and winding patterns are presented. Three dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis techniques are used to predict burst pressure and failure mode. Design and analysis techniques are verified through burst and cycling tests. The full qualification test methods and results for validation and certification are presented.

In this paper it is focused on the relation between CLR (Cell Loss Ratio) and blocking probability, GoS(Grade of Services) parameters in the wireless ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) access network which consists of access node and wireless channel. Traffic model of wireless ATM access network is based on the cell scale, burst scale and call connection level. The CLR equation due to buffer overflow for wireless access node is derived for CBR (Constant Bit Rate) traffic. The CLR equation due to random bit errors and burst errors for wireless channel is derived. Using the CLR equation for both access node and wireless channel, the CLR equation of wireless ATM access network is derived. The relation between access network CLR and blocking probability is analyzed for CBR traffic.
For detection of digitally modulated signals, the receiver must be provide with accurate carrier phase and symbol timing estimates. So far, tots of algorithms have been suggested for those purposes. In general, a interpolation filter with TED(Timing Error Detection) like Gardner algorithm is popularly used for symbol timing estimate of digital communication receiver. Apart from the performance point of view, a multiplicative operation of any interpolation filter limits the symbol rate of the system. Hence, we suggest a new symbol timing estimate algorithm for high speed burst-mode fixed wireless communication system and analyze its performance in the AWGN channel.

It is desirable that the implementation of next generation information infrastructure is the Integrated Network combining the satellite and the terrestrial network. The application of the ATM network being the dominant infrastrure of terrestrial network to the satellite network is being studied variously. Considering these concepts, this paper analyzes due to ATM transport via satellite, evaluates the degradation of QoS and proposes reliable method of ATM cell transport via satellite. Because ATM is investigated with the optical fiber which is almost error free characteristics, the practical application of ATM transport via satellite essentially need the channel coding(FEC:Forward Error Correction) to enhance BER performance. But using the FEC coding, satellite link has burst error characteristics which evoke severe performance degradation fo ATM QoS. Therefore in satellite link, we analyze burst error characteristics using experimental results of computer simulation. Then to compensate these characteristics, based on this analysis and HEC dual mode algorithm we propose various interleaver structures(Block interleaver, Intra interlever, and Inter-Intra interleaver) to improve cell transmission QoS. We execute performance evaluations of iterleaver structures by computer simulation.
CNG buses were introduced in 2002 to reduce air pollution to the big cities. The durability and safety evaluation were performed for the NGV-2 type cylinders taken from two buses after 30 months of running. No external damage and no internal corrosion was observed on the container surfaces. Defect exceeding the allowable limit was not found in the UT test. Permanent volume expansion was about 1.2% which is much smaller than the required design limit. Cycling test showed no failure after 11,250cycles and burst pressures were still above the maximum design pressure. Both the longitudinal and circumferential failure mode were observed, where both the fracture strengths were far above the design limit. This study showed the present CNG fuel cylinders were safe enough for further usage.

An Adaptive Usage Parameter Control(UPC) mechanism using a Variable Token Pool(VTP) which is kind of preventive traffic control in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) networks is described. The VTP mechanism can monitor violations of the average bit rate and burst duration as well as peak bit rate for the ON-OFF type traffic. The VTP can vary the token pool size by monitoring burst duration and silence duration for a long term. It also improves the sensitivity against the violation of burst duration and average bit rate and enables to response for the violating traffic situation quickly. The variable token pool size is varied in step size by every burst duration and silence duration. Two important parameters for controlling token pool size are Down_size and Up_size. We compare the performance of LB and JW mechanism with the proposed VTP mechanism by computer simulations. We have known that the proposed method is more effective than the previous mechanisms. It is shown that the cell loss rate of the VTP quite depends on the value of Down_size and Up_size. The two parameters should be decided as a propr value according to traffic situations.
